coaxial & optical is for digital connection...6channel direct is analog sound....

its better to use optical or coaxial as the sound clarity is way better n sharper n nicer to listen. and above that....u can play DTS dvd's at full DTS compatibility as the decoder can detect DTS data streaming tru from the dvd.

well for me ill still say sound blaster series is the best....minimum go for audigy platinum....if got money take audigy2zs platinum enuf liao....why the platinum is cos platinum series comes with the coaxial and optical output on the IO panel....some may reccomend prodigy but i say better not...cos i tried it n it sucks...it cant even detect optical sounds on my decoder. even tried the EMU series on the prodigy franchise....still same....so i stick with my creative obsession and it serves me well enuf......dts playback is really awesome for dvd movies.

there you go, yet another audigy2 zs plat + optical to Z680 = I LOLED laugh.gif

does the extreme music support dobly pass through? If you are going to buy the speaker and use its DAC/Decoder....forget about upgrading your sound card. On board card supports dobly pass trhough.

Spend your money wise.

well dude...i reccomended him to go for audigy plat is enuf.....built in's cannot push the speakers to its limit as ive tried my nforce 3 with my z5500....it sux big time...after the change i can feel a much more better sound n clarity n more amplified sound. to spend so much on a speaker system i think it is wise to spend alittle more on a sound card. i think u should knw better that a standalone sound card beats any built in sounds anytime.

try experiencing it first b4 saying i think. cos even u get a extreme music it doesnt have an optical nor a coaxial connection. and its a analog card and will never be able to give out proper performance as the digital connection. u are toking about dolby....but the main purpose i was refering to was the full use of the DTS enconding on the decoder.....if u plan on not spending money on proper sound card then i think better dont spend money on this kinda speaker system la.....sigh...

does hte z680 and 5500 support analogue input?

i mean, can we get an A2zs and use its DAC to convert audio and then feed it to the z680/5500?

yes. the only "pure digital speaker rolleyes.gif " that must use digital connection to get 5.1 AFAIK is the klipsch gmx 5.1

so, the only way to make good use of the A2 or any other soundcard when paired with the z680/5500 is to feed it with analogue signals, right?

if this is the case, then someone who upgrades from one card/chip to another while using digital the whole time is essentially wasting his money?

if you read my updated FAQ on sound card, you;d be able to answer that question yourself.

Assuming that the gigaworks is better than the z5500, and I already have the zS, I'd just get the gigaworks to pair with it.

If I did not have the ZS, but only onboard/av710, and don't wanna spend too much on the speaker, I'd get the Z5500.

Yes, basically if you buy a freaking expensive card, e.g. "whatever sound blaster" Platinum Pro...zzzZzZzzZ and conect the card to a Z5500/680/whatever speaker with built in decoder, you are virtually not using the sound card and yes....throwing money down the drain without even knowing it. That is of coz we are assuming that the card's DAC is better than the external DAC. If someone wants a good card to passthrough the digital signal to an external DAC, the RM100 AV710 does the work just fine.
