QUOTE(jimmydotnet @ Jul 28 2011, 12:17 AM) hi everyone...ive got 4 feet aquarium...without any gravel or plant...just got a wood as decoration i learn in the internet that the use of charcoal to : 1) maintaining the water quality in aquariums 2) best product for filtering the water and keeping the environment clean and healthy 3) Charcoal carbon is very helpful say if you have driftwood in your aquarium that is leaching tannins which turns your water a tea-stained color (mine did this after i soaked it for 4 days in separate tank ), carbon easily removes these tannins. so my question is can i use normal charcoal for grilling as shown below...bought at Carrefour for RM 10... can i put it inside the filter coz mine is side filter (filtration at back of aquarium) help me on this Actually you can buy the active carbon that use for house water filter about (RM4.90) pc that im using right now

Carbon should not be use unless u build up new or rebuild that tank. That is also optional cause normally it mean more for rebuild since you need to let the fish back to tank back to asap.
for new tank just put in a dirty sponge (can ask from lbs foc) to kick start the cycle in a fishless tank after 1-2 days fillup.

QUOTE(korean_girlsclub @ Jul 28 2011, 11:18 AM) but most of the filter we buy is carbon included. u want us take it out when use? depends on ur tank let me highlight few points from the web Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is frequently recommended for inclusion in aquarium filters. It is usually manufactured from coal, and occasionally from wood such as coconuts. It is recommended for use to remove unwanted colors and aromas from the aquarium.
carbon has been used as an agent to remove impurities from air and water. Activated carbon is one of the most effective absorbents currently used. Activated carbon is carbon which has a positive charge added to it, which makes it much more effective at absorbing impurities and chemicals
It does have a finite life, and will usually clog up in about 30 days. So, when the filter is serviced and cleaned (you DO service and clean your filter… right?), the old carbon should be discarded and fresh put in its place.
However, there are some potential problems you need to be aware of. Phosphorus, for one. Some brands of Granular Activated Carbon contain phosphates left over from the manufacturing process, and can add phosphates to the water column. This encourages unwanted algae growth
The biggest problem with Granular Activated Carbon is that it removes good things with the bad. Some filters include GAC inside the filter element, and they don’t give you a choice about it. Such filters should not be used on a planted aquarium. If you are going to run a filter on a planted aquarium, the best choice is one where you have a choice of exactly which filter material you can put in the box or canister
now imagine ur planted tank is stable, and u dosing liquid fert... and those fert pass thru this carbon.. what will happen ? on the other side, if u're starting new tank, or u just dose some chemical medicine for ur fish due to some infection/sick ... how to make sure there is no leftover? another thing to add on, activated carbon will NOT remove ammonia, nitrite or nitrateThis post has been edited by ciohbu: Jul 28 2011, 11:45 AM

Your advise is needed I am thinking of having a tank custom built (reinforced): 100cm Width x 30cm Depth x 25cm Height I want to create a bit of a panoramic look&feel, mostly with small group fish. I went to EA Ikano. They quoted me around RM400 for this reinforced custom tank. Besides the price, I was hoping if you guys/gals could perhaps advise me why I should not do this and just go for a standard size? TQ

DikkieD: don't go lfs in shopping to qoute price. Maybe you should get a quotation from NA? I believe rm150 can get. Well if you going for custom tank, why not make 3feet(L) x 1.5feet(H) x 1.5feet(W) Remember, gravel will take 2 inch of your height. 1 inch max water level to top of your tank. If your current tank dimension , 25cm=9inch, minus offset 3inch you left 6inch only This is my personal opinion only
