Actually, the problem isn't solved. I just suggested a symptomatic treatment. The underlying problem is still there. If you make the file modifiable again, you'll be back at square 1.

He'll probably be doing another fresh install before his dns changes.
It doesn't help that I sometimes find it sort of difficult to comprehend what his problem is from the way he phrases them.

^ I mean, sometimes I don't completely understand what your problem is.
Not your fault. It's just my understanding of certain terms is probably different from yours.

Sorry for not noticing earlier. Is the hash sum problem still there?
Sometimes it's package related and might be fixed the next day. Sometimes you'll need to redownload the keyring if it's from an third-party repo/PPA. Sometimes it's related to your apt config.

hi flame, your setting all maxed out for an older laptop... of course you'll get lower fps, try to reduce it and see how it goes. If you get fglrx working I believed it may help some of the 3D performance.

Well... IT technology might be developing fast, but...

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 1GB

Running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

I haven't managed to run Unigine's benchmark in Windows yet because it needs some ".NET Framework v4xxxxxxblahblahblahshiet" while I'm lacking a good Internet connection to even Google for that, but I'm pretty sure it'll be better by a margin nevertheless.

Probably you thought I'm running my old laptop (which is now a goner sad.gif ) because I said this?

Maybe it's me being too confident in my hardware, but for a spec like that, the frame rates are... I even disabled compositing for this dry.gif

oman.... I have nothing to say if you already used the fglrx driver. It is supposed to performed well in term of 3D as well as fps. What is the return of glxinfo and glxgears?

If you're trying to say the lack of performance might be because I'm using the open source driver, then nah. I can feel the difference between running fglrx and the open source drivers.

glxinfo output:

glxgears returned an average of 300 frames though.

Maybe I'll just do the same test with test setups later on Windows when I get to that ".NET Framework" blah blah blah...

Actually, I remember reading somewhere that the Unigen engine is specifically designed for DX11 and some sort of tessalisation. I can't remember exactly what was said but I know that test was designed for Windows systems

Well, they have a Linux version of the test. But if from what you say means the tests will mean that they favor Windows systems then...

Now installing the necessary stuff for the test to run on Windows, and I'll be setting up the test the same settings I had on Linux.

your direct rendering is on, but the glxinfo is returning low fps. I am giving my opinion on desktop environment for my past agp radeon 256mb. Using opensource, I am getting below 500 fps > so limited desktop effects. Compiled to fglrx, boosted to 1500 fps an excellent output with all the effects enabled. The reason why your fglrx does not performs well is beyond my knowledge.
