which better:

1. linux mint...err,dunno what latest version... sweat.gif
2. opensuse 11.3
3. back track
*
hmm? Backtrack doesn't really fit into that list of distros you want to try. BT is EXTREMELY specialised. Not to say it can't do other things but ppl who use backtrack have a good idea of what they want to do.

hi all...just want to ask. Where i can get training to learn and setup server especially linux server? Is there any training course and any certificate that i can get? maybe it's like cisco training but not focus only to network, but more to server
*
You could try for Red Hat Certification. I can't remember where I saw it but if you search here I'm sure you'll find it.

Hey guys,

On a totally different topic (sorry for derailing thread), has anybody heard of a way to push installations to Windows computers over the domain using a Linux server?

My google-fu skills have failed me in this and I'm not sure if its possible.

As an apology for the derailment, an XKCD comic

Can't be 2 at the same time and having the same problem. What are the odds? I can't even format from a different computer. It show a series of text and it hang. The last message was a Kernel panic. I hope there is a solution to this. Anyone can help? Thanks in advance.
*
Remove hard disks from computers and move very powerful magnet up and down the hard drive in slow yet purposeful manner...................... please don't do that... im joking.

But seriously, just remove the drives and format them by attaching them to a different computer. Should not be an issue.

Don't that but come out same result. I find it very odd. That 2 identical computer having the same problem. So I was just wondering, is there a Linux Distros that can protect the hard disk from being formatted?  Anyway thanks for all your help.
*
The only to prevent a drive from being formatted is physical write protection. I really can't imagine what sort of physical write protection is there on a hard drive. Are those special hard drives or soemthing?

If not, then DBAN is your next option.

Software write protection is program based. It may be a feature of the OS or a program. The only other thing I can imagine is firmware based write protection? I never heard of that before. Maybe someone here can enlighten me. Apart from that, if its software based, just bypass it by not loading the hard drive at all (ie DBAN).

No luck with DBAN after several attempt. I try different method to wipe but it come with a non fatal error. I think it is a bad sector or a bad block. Any more ideas? I think it is a waste of a good hard disk. Anyway thank you guy for the guidance.

Hmmm you have got quite an interesting situation here.

Sounds like bad sectors. Have you scanned your hard drives using drive testing utilities? Just remember not to boot from those drives.

Hmm, again I'm gonna veer the topic off tangent.

2 things happening on my home network. The first is probably a networking issue but I'll just list it down anyways and the 2nd is issues playing 720/1080p across the network.

1st. Copying files from my file server to my HTPC caps at 3.5 MB/s. This doesn't make sense. It should be higher. I can't figure out whats wrong with it. File server runs debian and HTPC ubuntu 10.10. I'm thinking switch limitation. Its a basic RM50 switch (TP-Link) i think. You guys got any other ideas?

2nd. When I watch movies on my HTPC, the movies are actually piped from my server in another room. Using MythTV backend and frontend setups. 720 and 1080p movies are jerky (both video and sound). Even if I don't use MythTV to watch, I still get that problem.

However, when I copy the file to my HTPC hard drive, the movie plays fine. No jerky or skipping. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Alright guys, new question. I need software recommendation. Basically I want my router to dial into my Debian server. Like how our routers dial into TM's authentication servers.

I'm not sure how to phrase the question to google. My search results have resulted in some semi accurate results. Example of search result

http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2616

Is this what I'm looking for? I'm not sure how to proceed.

I'm not quite sure I understand you, but I'm assuming you're trying to remotely connect to your server (which is another location) via pppoe?

Something like this, perhaps?
http://imranasghar.blogspot.com/2009/05/pp...untudebian.html

If not, could you clarify which section your predicament is related to?
http://wiki.debian.org/Network

Apologies, as I'm the last person you should ask when it comes to networking. I'd assume you got all the usual tips from the Networking/P2P section of these forums and this is a Ubuntu/Debian/Linux specific issue you're facing here?
*
Looks like its correct. Basically I'm trying to emulate an ISP. Meaning my Debian server is the server which all my clients connect to. Just like how we connect to TM servers.

The Linux part I'm looking for is software. Routing shouldn't be too much of an issue. Roaring Penguin looks correct but I'm not too sure.

Why am i doing this? Because I'm curious as hell how to works. Haha. tongue.gif

It'd be great if you started a thread telling us about all the networking adventures you've had with Linux.
You call me a "guru", but seriously, there's very little I know (I don't work in the IT/computing industry aside from some small GPL/BSD/FOSS projects), and I'm probably a noob compared to most people on the networking side of things. I'd be very thrilled if you found time to share your experiences with us, as I presume there's a lot I could learn from you. smile.gif
*
Sorry, I didn't realized you replied me.

As for my networking adventures? Not much actually. I read and experiment mainly on penetration testing stuff. Nothing really revolutionary for the home. Although my current home project is as I mentioned earlier in the thread, setting up a PPPOE server.

Its coming along very slowly though. I'm having issues with the firewall part of the server. Probably because I'm lazy to type in iptables and would rather use a GUI like fwbuilder. If I get it to work or scale down (most likely TBH) I'll start a thread called "How I spent 18 hours trying to build a transparent intranet firewall"

i got a problem here..
why i need to reconfigure the resolv.conf file every time i reboot..?
need to put the dns server on that file, and then i do this etc/init.d/networking restart
*
Mmm.. usually this means that you have a daemon/service running on startup that configures your resolv.conf. An example of such a daemon would be DHCP related programs.

I think there is a way to make the resolv.conf immutable. Try the following :-
CODE
sudo chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf

If you want to change it again, use :-
CODE
sudo chattr -i /etc/resolv.conf

But I do suggest you look through your list of startup programs/applications to find the problem.

how i can look through the startup list? it's because of dhcp?
*
I don't know if its because you are running a DHCP service. I used DHCP as an example.

Startup scripts can be found at /etc/init.d

There should be quite a number of scripts found inside there. Its gonna be time consuming to look through all of them but its the only way I know to troubleshoot this problem. Or maybe we can wait for Guru G-17 to come on and help. He knows his stuff.

I cannot download and install software from ubuntu software center today. is there any problem with ubuntu software server? the pop-up windows show "fail to retrieve the software, check ur internet connection". internet connection is ok, no problem at all.
Try checking your sources to see if the source you are pointed at is working. If not, try a different source. I had some problems with my debian sources a while back, so I added a singaporean server.

Do we have a local debian mirror?

I like your avatar, btw. I just saw Cat_Shit_One for the first time a few days ago. It was awesome.
Packy!!! ...... Botasky!!!!

There's no M'sian Debian mirror, as far as I know.
I think some uni had one a few years ago, but it sorta disappeared.
Anyways, Debian prides itself on being pure and clean, and Malaysia is probably too corrupt for it. Libya will probably get and official Debian mirror before Malaysia. sweat.gif
What problems?
Scorps? ... He ALWAYS has problems..... it's neverending rolleyes.gif

Yeah! Packy! Bota! I am amazed by the animation. Loved it too biggrin.gif

Regarding scorps issue, what if the issue isn't his DHclient? The choice of DNS keeps changing might mean that another application has very specific DNS servers it needs to connect to.

Actually, the problem isn't solved. I just suggested a symptomatic treatment. The underlying problem is still there. If you make the file modifiable again, you'll be back at square 1.

He'll probably be doing another fresh install before his dns changes.
It doesn't help that I sometimes find it sort of difficult to comprehend what his problem is from the way he phrases them.
*
ROFL!!

I don't mean to be insulting but it seems that you have alot of problems with the way ppl type on the intahwebs. See alien3d's post as well tongue.gif

But its all good. I just see the humour in it all.

Also, scorps, he means that you'll probably be doing a new install. Why? I dunno.

P.S. I HAZ UNIFI NAO!!! What should I do?
