Guys, i'm looking to buy a NEX -5 with dual kit.. But, seeming the price.. i might go for a dslr.. I am kind of noob here..But, really interested in photography and i am kind of an all rounder.. I love to take shot at wedding too...

so, do you think NEX 5 is already okay, or i'll shoot go for DSLR instead?

Between Nex-5 and DSLR, both are good and have different characteristics. Just search for the difference online.
Depends what you need? Are you willing to carry a brick inside a backpack for photography or just carry a handphone size camera inside your pocket for ease of mind?

@chiahau: yeah..rite? but still.. i've read better not go for a sony alpha dslr cuz they might not continue with dslr and focus on nex.. Canon or nikon is no problem for me but.. there am i again.. confuse whether i should go for a dslr or nex instead... sigh..

Added on December 22, 2010, 9:38 am@Jurlique: i've search some of them on the net.. but most of the comment are like fanboys(either hate it or love it too much)..

plus, from what i've collected:

ease of use: nex
quality of pic : draw or some mid-end dslr or all high end dslr
learning curve: nex
customisation: dslr
full control : dslr

but how about future proof(from lens price, accessory and variability)?

outlook wise, sony really win, but the design remain same for couples of years, kind of boring to the design dy... all T series look 99% / totally same... my fren wont use video function, so full HD or not doesnt really care...

tx9 hv background defocus function, don't know how real is that, from the commercial its totally amazing  drool.gif

but i know its 99% impossible  biggrin.gif

3 models i shortlisted for her now, canon 300hs (my top suggestion), tx9 (only if background defocus really works), and tx5(like its waterproof)  nod.gif
*
haha. how different you want it to be? all DSLRs also look the same what. the main objective for the T series is slim, funky and easy to bring around. background defocus only works well if you are shooting ONE subject. if there are a lot of focus points, the camera might get confused and simply blur. laugh.gif

try not to read too much of those internet comments which are mostly trolls. one small problem and they usually make it like its the end of the world. the bolded part is soooo not true. my advise is, go to the camera shop and test these few cameras and then only u decide.

and by the way, you can get full controls and customisation(set the settings if that's what you meant) on NEX as well.

I mean Nex-5 lol...
Otherwise, you may consider EPL-1 also if you need PnS with DSLR qualities.

Why Sony stop DSLR production? They just released DSLT n a newer firmware for A850 n A900.

Nex is a commercial product. DSLR are for enthusiast that loves serious photography.

Future proof? In Photography world, where got anything future proof one?
Lol.

i am a NEX owner, just want to share my opinion smile.gif

customization and control its easy now via update firmware v03 smile.gif

all those review are firmware v01-02, at that moment its really quite inconvenient to customise... but after update, change ISO, WB, HDR, Creative style(color tone) is very easy, not nid to go intoooooooo the menu anymore laugh.gif

disadvantage to be note of :

1. lens availability
2. OOF cant notice by the screen doh.gif (i don see others hv this problem, but it occurs to me few times already)
3. battery life (get at least 1 stand by battery, AT LEAST 1)
4. nex 3 easily scratch... nex 5 don't hv this prob...

but so far, i am really satisfy with it, especially low light performance and panorama function drool.gif

you totally make me wanna buy the nex now.. lol..
i am really considering on buying the nex 5~ hurm.. so, which package is okay? 18-55mm or the dual lens? i read some good reviews on 18-55mm but not so much for the pancake 16mm.. The pancake is just for portability right? No extra effect on picture?

get both lens la. yes the pancake is more for is portability and POCKET-ABILITY. the IQ of the pancake is somewhat not as good la. however, not as good doesn't means its not good!

Ohh shit am having tough decisions deciding on either;

Pana GF1 20mm f1.7 (amazing bokeh with this lens)
Sony Nex5 or 3 with its limited range of lens
Olympus EP1 or EPL1

Am already a DSLR user, just want a smaller than DSLR to bring around when there are places its unapropriate to bring a DSLR.

What you mean by background de-focus? Is it a software done in the PC or its a function in the camera after snap it will de-focus?
