For travel, I would certainly go for 16-105. It's one great lens to have. smile.gif

IQ wise is very good nod.gif
dont compare like that la. its two different lens lorr...
still the CZ1680 is just f3.5-4.5 , does that makes it lose to the 55200 ??
for the 16105, i love it. but bokeh wise not so much

kysham : will do. but dunno when nod.gif

Tamron has announced the 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD superzoom lens, the first to incorporate the company's Piezo Drive (PZD) technology that promises faster and quieter autofocus. A completely revised, smaller and lighter version of the popular AF 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro, it offers an enhanced Vibration Control (VC) image stabilization system, uses a new optical formula with fewer lens elements and takes 62mm filters. The lens will be available in Canon and Nikon mounts from December 20 followed by a Sony version next year.

ok guys we have a new term to learn~

piezo drive (PZD) = SSM = USM = SWD = ..... biggrin.gif

the difference between standing wave motor and travelling wave motor in layman's term?

QUOTE
A standing wave ultrasonic motor utilizes high-frequency voltage to extend and turn the Piezoelectric (Piezoceramic) element, thus moving the entire element in a standing wave movement. The metal tip is the contact point of the element to the rotor, and moves in an elliptic motion from the swiveling motion of the moving element, and the friction from this motion turns the rotor. Standing wave ultrasonic motors have the distinct advantage of being smaller than their traveling wave counterparts, and therefore allow a more compact SLR lens size.

don't judge a lens purely on technical terms (i.e. focal length range, aperture, mfd) only... the most important function of a lens is to produce good quality images. the lens design & coating type plays a major role in this. you may get a 28-105mm f2.8 lens but if the output is still soft and not contrasty, what is the point?

the 16-105 is known as a variant of the famed and the only aps-c Carl Zeiss lens on the market. because of that, it has got excellent image quality in terms of sharpness & color. stick a ZEISS logo to the side and people will think you got the 16-80 Zeiss, since the exterior design is almost the same! laugh.gif

if you don't need the reach of a 250mm lens, then i would fully support you get the SAL16105. An excellent walk around lens that costs less than a Zeiss, but built very similar to one. wink.gif

more expensive da better rclxms.gif
lenses are expensive because of the glasses/elements used , different calculation (optics) , more/less coatings and thousands more to consider. thats why its expensive and good.

i'd prefer the minolta/sony 24-105 f/3.5-4.5, seems as sharp as the 16105 with slightly larger aperture at end focal. the minolta 28-135 is also one of the best, some say a hidden G lens laugh.gif
