one of the improvements for current generation of wdtv:

On my wdtv gen1, i spent time n effort to download thumbnails, and in some cases, resizing them to make my mkvs look pretty on my video menu. Now u just can download them, together with movie style sheets on the connected wdtv ..

so let me get this straight .... even with the lan cable unplugged (before u go into standby mode), your wdtv doesn't properly wake up from standby mode after that? *sorry now im slightly confused*

so u have a gigabit switch in your setup. some users have reported playback problems/issues when playing full rip bd.iso through gigabit switch, something to do with the flow control settings on these switches. they appear to only be isolated problems with certain specific switches such as netgear.

however, your problem isnt exactly related to stuttering playback on bd.iso or the likes .... so not sure if that helps, just conveying what i've read before .... are all your ports on the switch gigabit? or are some ports gigabits and some 10/100?
*
when the cable is plugged in and goes into standby mode, i try to turn on, it doesn't work, i then pull the lan cable out and try to start it up, result is the same until i power off completely.

i doubt is the switch as i have many other devices that are connected to it without any issues. its definitely all giga ports.

now my network shares seems to disappear again after a power off. i am also lost now... rclxub.gif

from what you have shared with me, i doubt my unit is faulty it is more likely my network environment which is kinda strange as i have so many other devices connected to this NAS and have no issues at all. the wd remote for IOS works like a charm though.

@ mintgadget - so basically, as long as the lan cable is plugged in immediately prior to going into standby, the wdtv crashes BUT if there is no lan cable connected before you put the wdtv into standby, then it will wake up from standby fine. is that right? then something strange is happening in the background while it's on standby .... i cant figure it out.

did turning off the metadata scraping work?

some other ideas to consider (thinking aloud in random order):

- did you create a new user ID on your NAS setting for the wdtv to login? if so, did u grant this user ID write access (not just read access)? the wdtv needs to have write access on the NAS.

- is the wdtv on the same network domain as the nas? by default the wdtv is set to "WORKGROUP" but on my QNAP NAS the default was "NAS". i had this problem when i first got my wdtv. i needed to change the wdtv network domain to NAS before it could see my QNAP.

- instead of using "network shares" to connect your wdtv to your nas, why don't u try using "media server" instead (i.e. via DLNA. i believe your Synology comes with Twonky built-in). see whether this scenario still crashes your wdtv.

sorry, im running out of ideas and just rambling now ..... lol.

I know there is a signifant differences betweena full HD media player and a normal one but that also depends on the media itself

yes metascraping is off. i am using guest access so there is no delete abilities. i also doubt this is the root cause. as for workgroup, i am also very particular with any new device i add to my network to make sure they all fall under the same workgroup so it easily accessible between each other. i have media server turned on too, that seem to work fine but i prefer using network shares as i have group my content based on a number of folders. this still does not allow the box to be turned back on from standby too.

I'm looking at the user manual of WDTV Live... have you tried changing the network type to Work? It very specifically mentioned that this

"Ensure that the following options are selected: Turn on network discovery, Turn on file and printer sharing, Media streaming is off, and Allow
Windows to manage homegroup connections (recommended)."

Not very sure if this is applicable for you cuz ur NAS should be NFS.

mintgadget - the wdtv needs to have "Write" access to your NAS. I suspect, as is normally the case, the Guest profile is a "Read-only" access. the wdtv needs to create and store info in the /wdtv folder on the NAS, including possibly network-related data/settings. that could be a reason why the wdtv "forgets".

edit - that probably also explains why everything works fine when you are using "Media Server" (because the media files are being "pushed" from the NAS to your wdtv via Twonky/DLNA whereas using "Network Share" works in the opposite direction (i.e. your wdtv is "pulling" files from your NAS).

eye - if u want/need more control over this process (rather than let the built-in automated process handle it which can sometimes yield wierd/wrong results), then u can refer to post #848. it's written specifically for the wdtv live hub and live streaming, rather than the all-purpose ThumbGen.

thanks terranova.

i turned off auto content and left it to MANUAL .. that way i can use the OPTION button to manually search and select the right movie sheets and pictures ... this works 100% .. if u leave it to AUTO, yeah .. sometimes it gives u the wrong movie content or zero results due to the wrong naming convention in yr mkv or mp3 files tongue.gif

cheers!

yes, Aimar. just the newer remote controlller alone is worth the difference in cost, in my opinion.

you're welcome.

i thought you're using a universal remote control?

anyway, just in case you're not aware, u can program any one of the 0-9 keys to do a "screen capture" jpg.

hmm.. figures now i remember with wdlive gen 1 when i setup for a friend in will store some files into the disk. hence that is probably the cause of it not remembering the network shares. as for media server, yes i do understand how it work but probably this is the only route for me if i do not want all that "extra" files in my folders.

let me try creating a user account with write privileges to connect wdtv to it coz when in standby turning it back on doesn't seem to work still.

live streaming. live (live streaming's predecessor) doesn't have metadata scraping capabilities built into the firmware. that's why users had to resort to using 3rd party softwares like ThumbGen to get folder/cover art.

actually, the firmwares are quite differently coded. the live-s firmware is built on the live hub's codes and share the same Mochi interface, and is also better encrypted (that's why custom firmwares have yet to appear on these models).
