just got my wdtv live-s. It's one hell of bad experience for me. The first time I plug it in, I was already got to switch off the wall plug over 10 times. Click here, it hangs (waiting for a long time), click there, it hangs.. Trying to upgrade my firmware, i keeps on checking for update even after i left it for 10 minutes.. *#$#, wasting my electricity bill only.. I tried to see what's inside RSS menu.. click on it, then click on the link.. it hang again... got to turn off the plug again.. Afer I disabled the media library also, it still hang... all are caused by internet related stuff, eventhough I'm already connected and able to view youtube, etc. I enabled the media library, it says something like compiling my media info.. but it never stops.. I left it for more than 3 hours, it still never finish compiling.. and while compiling, the player is laggy and causing my remote unresponsive.. Oh.. well.. got to swith off the wall plug again and retry!

If I live in US, i'd return it already to get a full refund.. I know this is a great device once everything is setup properly.. but I did gone through a nightmare trying to use it for the first time..

Lastly, I manually update the firmware from 1.0.3 to 1.0.6 using usb drive (automatic update does not work), everything started getting better.. No more hanging except once. I hope, after this update, everything will go smoothly. I hope my nightmare is over now.

Now I'm trying to enable my media info library again.. Only god knows how long it's gonna take.. I just have 1TB of media files only and all inside a single usb hd..

Sorry to hear of your poor experience with the wdtv live-s bro. Sounds like a mess ....

Suggest u take it slow and not try to do too many things in one go .... esp when the unit is scanning and compiling the media library .... just let it be and scan until finish. how long it takes depends on the no. of files, not the size (1TB). what i mean by this is that if your library (usb drive) has say 100 files of 10GB each would scan faster than a library of 10,000 of 100MB each.

Yeap...even my Core 2 duo with XBMC takes almost 18 hours to scan finish my network library off a network share.... sweat.gif .

This is my third day of having the newly bought wdtv live-s and still haven't enjoyed watching any of my movies because it kept compiling the media library and I kept rebooting it (by switch off the wall plug). I can't tell whether the compiling is working or not, because everytime I leave it on for compiling and at the same time, turned off the TV.. when I come back to check the progress by turning on the TV, I can't get any display at all. The LED kept blinking as usual but the TV display shows nothing even though I"ve kept pushing the remote. I wonder is the device is hanging, crash, working in backgroud or what? Any thought?

Just let your WDTV do what its doing for 1/2 day to 1 day without you disturbing it despite it not showing any display. I don't think it will do you any good if you keep turning it on off on off on off... sweat.gif

As I said even my core 2 took 18 hours to finish compiling in xbmc for 1TB of movies + tv shows... i wont expect any media player to do the same any faster.

My suggestion would be to start off by NOT turning on the Media Library function. By default, it is not activated iirc. Also, make sure that the auto scraping function is also turned off (again, by default it is OFF iirc). you've mentioned that you're currently running the latest firmware, so that's good.

Then, just playback the files by directly accessing the files on your usb drive (via LOCAL DRIVES from the RED button and not MEDIA LIBRARY).

Switch on and off and play around with the unit and see if it turns on ok after u power down.

Eventually, when you're happy that it's been working well thus far, then turn ON the Media Library, but perhaps start off with a limited number of media files on your usb drives (perhaps using a spare drive or thumb drive etc.) say e.g. 10 movie/tv files and perhaps some music files. The compiling should take less than 5 mins. Anything longer and the unit's probably running into some problem.

The blinking led on the unit indicates that it's still compiling. It turns solid (stop blinking) once the compiling is done. Like i said, how long the compiling process takes depends on the number of files you have in that 1TB. if u share this info with us, that would help. I believe the wdtv re-scans everything all over again as long as the process isn't completed 100%. so basically when u reboot, u start back at 0%. in any event, i dont believe 1TB should take more than a full day (probably just hours) unless it comprises of thousands of mp3s.

lastly, are u running your wdtv through an AV Receiver to your TV?

Thansk for your advice terranova. Other than the display issue (cannot get display after I left the player for some time while tv is off), i think the player should be fine.. I connect the player directly to lcd via hdmi..

this time, I've determined to wait it compling my media library even longer. The longer was 12 hours before I gave up and reboot. I think i got 1000++ mp3 and probably a bit lesser than 1000 for movies (~1TB/700MB).

zeese, not sure if you've mentioned it before... are your hdd connected directly to the wdtv?
I have 2x 2TB hdd(front and back usb) connected directly to my wdtv and the media compiling normally takes 1-2mins to complete.

My first 2TB hdd is mainly for movies/series which is about 60% used.
The 2nd 2TB hdd is still new with only 55GB used. Mainly for my audios.

Anyhow, want to ask to all, am thinking of using LAN cable to connect from router to the wdtv. If I open a movie which is at my PC, will it be faster to load? How fast? Thanks!

zeese did mention that he has a lot of mp3...so that might be one of the big causes as he has a lot of files to scrape and index.

In compiling the media library for the 1st time will take the longest, as it's building up the database from scratch. Subsequent compilation from the same library (source) will take just a few minutes, as it only incrementally builds on the existing database for any new files it finds.

yep, i suspected zeese's drive had many files, hence the longer building time. glad to hear it's ok now. as for the lcd tv not showing anything, this probably has something to do with the hdmi handshaking thingy where it failed to establish a handshake after u switch off your tv the first time.

and welcome to the club. if u have any more problems, post it here and we'll try to help.

@ EightPhantomz - i believe it will be slightly slower (compared to a usb drive connected to the wdtv locally), but not slow enough to cause you any frustration ... basically we're talking maybe a 2-3 seconds delay.

if HDMI handshaking is the problem, usually replugging hdmi cable will solve the problem as it will restart the handshake challenge....

2-3 seconds delay should be ok. As long its way better than using WIFI.

My wife have this habit of shutting off the main switch before going out to work. So my wdtv will always need to do the media library compiling first before I can open anything.

And I have more than 1000 audio files aswell. Well mostly .FLACs since I'm very particular with my music quality.

glad to hear that. just be aware that high bitrate rips could stutter via wifi. otherwise, you should be fine. smile.gif

so your inability to connect via wifi earlier had something to do with unifi's proprietory router or settings?
