I plan to install alarm to my new house but undecided over wireless or wired alarm? Which one is better if we take the price out from consideration.

My biggest concern for wireless alarm is the battery life, how long it can be used before need to change the battery? Any insight on this LYN forumers?

Thanks!

Wire is always better. Get an alarm system with smoke detector too.

A good wireless sensor battery life can last typical 24 to 36 months depend what type of sensor. Motion sensor required more battery power. Replacement will be really costly, can you imagine changing 20 Lithium Ions battery? Assuming RM 15 for one battery, you do the math. That is assuming you have 2 motion sensor, and 12 shock sensor. If you have more you buy more.

My knowledge in wireless alarm are limited, i know more on Wired cause my friend do for commercial and bank.

I'll say a good wired alarm system with good wiring are maintenance free.

For wireless maybe just a simple system is ok, for entire house coverage wired are better.

Maybe you can mix both? Im using wireless for doors and windows sensors. For motion, im using wired (Im not sure if there is wireless motion sensor).
But even for wireless, you still need to to some wiring (panel box, receiver box, lighting strobe, etc).

Another common problem with Alarm, please isolate the phone line.

If not you risk frying the alarm controller.

got wireless motion sensors.

wiring involved for wireless alarm, is just the power lines for the control panel + external siren box.

so far battery life for each sensor i'm experiencing is approx 1.5-2 years with indicator.

You mean even wireless also need to hack the wall to conceal the cable?

Thanks weikee for the explanation. RM15 per battery serious? How come the wireless alarm salesman tell me each battery is only RM2.50??

The only thing that wireless are the sensors only.

The control panel and powered by electricity. Also, there's the alarm box, that people put on the outside, so that neighbours and hear the
sound. The alarm box is connected by wires.. You have to hide the wires.

As for batteries, i think it depends on what type of battery they want to use..

Unless they use AA or AAA. Button, lithium and CR123 is not that cheap.

yea depends on what battery used.

i use CR123....cost about RM8-10 depends on brand. and change is needed after approx 2 years.

good thing about wireless is that its transferable and easily customizable (incase u wanna reno in the future).

alot of pros and cons la. so it depends on your preference haha smile.gif

wired :
pros - maintenance free
cons - need to do wiring throughout the house..
- the wiring can get faulty .. possibly eaten by rat, or deterioriate itself
due to aging, or bad installation..

wireless
pros - no need wiring
- you change the sensor location anytime, anywhere. And maybe you
want to put the sensors on your cupboard or drawer if you like.. and maybe
stick it at your front gate if the sensor can withstand outdoor condition.
cons - need to change battery periodically..
- if the sensor is put on the roof, you need to climb your roof to change the battery.

As for me, if money not a problem, i'd go for wired, or maybe get both, so I can get
the advantages of both world.

Proper wire system will not expose too much wire. It risk being tamper by thief. Usually all are conceal and only the connection to the sensor are expose "minimal"

DSC Alarm is US based alarm. Last time they supply a lot through ADT CMS system. But DSC alarm price will be at higher side.

For Paradox, is a Canada brand. Paradox price is affordable and their quality is good. They have few series of products depend on what kind of house you are staying.

I wouldn't say Paradox is high end as I am having it now in my house. It is reasonably price but it lacks some nice to have faetures that I would like to have. For example, there is no voice module to inform you when you arm and disarm your system; the GSM module is not stable; the standard configuration does not include Internet accessibility; the door opened chime volume in alarm off mode cannot be adjusted to louder volume, etc etc. Of course mine is the standard configuration and not Magellan.

That said, it is quite reliable as it works as intended and I do not encounter any false alarm so far.

so to compare both DSC Power Series and Paradox, it will be like equally good? in terms of reliability? I am just curious, cause my electrician proposed DSC Power Series for me......

Really big headache now >.<
