The first few drops are GOLD pls do let your newborn latch on cos that's colostrum.

I tried breastcrawl as soon as I delivered my baby. Basically that's how you put your baby near your breast to let him or her get used to the smell and be able to find his or her way to mommy's nipple. Once he's there it ll be his instinct to latch on. This will encourage direct feeding.

Don't worry that your baby won't feel enough even though there's no milk. Colostrum should be sufficient to provide him or her with nutrition. Before you go on labour your breasts are already filled with colostrum (to prepare your journey to breastfeeding). You can try squeeze it out from your nipple around 37 weeks. It's yellowish and not milky at all.

When you're in the hospital, you can opt for fully BF or mix with formula. If you choose the later, it only means you get to rest more to recuperate. Nurses would feed by using syringes so that won't create nipple confusion or stop your bb from wanting breast milk. In whatever situation you won't have to bring your breast pump. I'd say direct feeding is the best kind of feeding.

Direct feeding (in the right way) will cause less wind and will create the special bonding between mommy and baby. Some experienced forumers here suggested direct feeding for the first few months and only use a breast pump when mommy starts working. Last but not least, direct feeding will stimulate your milk supply wink.gif

Thanks to a few forumers here like Syd G and Jilliam who suggested breastcrawling or breastcrawl, I did it and was able to BF my LO for longer than I expected.

New mommies can try it straight after labour. It's really a precious moment smile.gif

Dear experienced mummies n daddies, I really need some help n advice here.

I have a baby boy of about 3 weeks old and I've been striving to feed him exclusively with breast milk. However I do encounter some problems along the way so I'm hoping to get some advice here.

1. I let LO DL during daytime however I was too exhausted for the night feeding so what I did was pump enough during day time and confinement lady will feed LO using bottle. However, to do that, it means I will BF for 30-40 mins then when LO is done I rest a bit and continue to pump. Js a while after finish pumping it's almost time for the next feed. This is quite tiring and I'm literally doing nothing else! Is there any better way to store up breast milk for night feeding?

2. Somehow my LO is rejecting my left breast and only want to suckle on the right. Therefore my left breast is stimulated much less and is producing less milk. Anyway to make LO suckle on left as well? Everytime I put him to the left he suckle a bit and will reject and keep crying until I have no choice but position him to the right again.

3. Do I need to burp LO if he DL? Some articles that I read requires burping but the hospital lactation consultant said that BF babies do not need to be burped.

Thanks all!

Hi Eva,

It is very risky if you skip night pumping session / night latching session, especially in the first 8 - 12 weeks where it is the most crucial time to establish breastfeeding. You might want to try nursing sideway at night, that way you can continue sleeping while baby nurses.

If you do not nurse the baby at night, and let confinement lady to feed EBM, you still have to get up and pump. It's tiring, but it is important to establish breastfeeding. Skipping pumping session / nursing session will send signals to your brain to slow down milk production.

I did not really burb LO after I nursed him directly, but if he takes EBM from bottle, I do burp him.

I do not have any tips for your 2nd question as my LO took both breasts smile.gif
Good luck

I'm not so sure where she's coming from but it's more comfy to nurse in cold room as breastfeeding can make both mommy and baby sweat a lot.

Newborns can be fussy for a many reasons - too hot, too old, too noisy, too quiet, too bright and the list goes on... they dont know how to handle the world so they do what they do best - cry biggrin.gif

She did get fussy whenever I try to latch her on. But a while later she's fine and start sucking already. Don't know what's wrong... sweat.gif

breastfeeding is good for mommy and baby. Mother will get slim down quickly and prevent breast cancer. Everyday baby has fresh 100% milk from dearest mommy. And save more

Hi all, can I know if any mummy here direct feed and also do pumping during the first month?

How do you manage the direct feed and the pumping session? Coz let say you direct feed your baby at 9am, then maybe 15 or 30 mins later you pump out to empty the other breast or the one you feed her...but at the same time also worry if baby will sudden wake up from sleep and want to be nurse again...but since you already pump the milk out...not sure is there any milk left to feed the baby again.... How ler?

Am I doing it right?

Now what I'm doing is direct feed her during midnight since I read if nurse at midnight can increase the milk production. Then feed her breast milk in bottle at day time...is it ok?

Please correct me if I'm doing wrong...coz I just read from research and without anyone teaching... sweat.gif
