Nissin Digital Flash Compatibility Chart

From the nissin website, only stated Di622 support until G10, but i think you can update the firmware of ur flash gun.

Thanks a lot bro. I've read that one, and none mention the G11. I guess you're rite in term of software upgrading...BTW, the flash itself is almost the same size with G11 tongue.gif Better get 270ex for more compatibility, if that's important to you smile.gif

Canon G11 with 270ex sample picture

The right one is with the flash. The color is more warm compare to the left without flash.

Ya, 270ex is more cute on the G11/G12.

Welcome to the Canon G family. Like a child carry a machine gun shooting around...great impact...

is it you have to max zoom in when the converter tube is mounted? if not the picture just circular picture?

Found a new version of filter adapter: which can move along with the zoom lens(have spring loaded)

Start from 2min will introduce the lens adapter:

No, the lens adapter got two part u can detatch the front part if u don't use the tele lens or zoom.. For normal wide angle or fisheye lens u juz use the part where u attatch on to ur camera. wink.gif
so, u can't zoom when u use juz one part of the adapter.

The smaller the F no, the bigger the apperture, more bokeh you will get, and vice versa. However, since G11 is a compact camera and using small sensor, the different doesnt really noticeable. So, eventhough you're using big apeerture (small F no like F2.8), you won't notice the bokeh that much.

However, on the APS-C sensor like Nex-3, the different is noticeable, and you"ve got to play around with DOF. Here's one example from my ex-Nex-3 tongue.gif

Yeah bro, I agree with you on that, G series still capable doing that. But should you mistakenly pick up big apperture for photo without specifically focus ( on our G series), the different won't be so noticeable. In conclusion, you don't have to worry about the DOF as much as if you're using full APS-C sensor. I am not good at explaining though tongue.gif

It does, it does man...I'm really happy with this. Need the CPL and I'll be extremely happy.

the only one thing...the depth of field...hmmmm...but everything has limitations, right?

I can blur the background if I do a macro on something, like the pic of the golfball shown here..

Man, this is good stuff!

Yes, I have the G12 and am lovin' it!!!

I did download the lightroom, so now I've discovered how to "enhance" the photos.

This digital world is so much easier than the old 35mm (I have Canon AE-1)

I'll post some as well....in fact maybe just give you all the flickr link...what do you all feel?

I really need that FA Filter Adapter to be totally happy (with the CPL)

Happy shooting!!

hi owners, need a quick review, especially if you're taking baby pics:
for continuous shooting like a dslr is it possible? or if i press the shutter continuously, how many frames per second will it capture before it stops for processing?

I dont mind shooting in jpeg for ths as quality is secondary.

is it possible for this camera to shoot at 2fps for 5 sec continuously (focus fixed)?

if not how much time in between do i have to wait?

My baby moves a lot especially the smiles, probably he smiles only 0.5s per 10s so i have to really shoot continuously and hope for the best.

appreciate your helps

Hey Congrats on your purchases.

I think this camera is really magic you know? It just takes getting to know it better.

I am a Canon user from SLR days as well, and I find I will stick with it.... really don't like that N_k_n brand you know...so many people regard it as the only camera in the world...be we know bettter wink.gif

We just need to learn how to use and express with this camera.

I had spoke with my friend on cameras recently and wanted to purchase a replacement for my SLR. We did research and found that the Canon 550d is a great cam..doing full HD movies and all. But I didn't want to take around all of that SLR/DSLR gear again... soooo...I chose this. Fits in my hands like it was made for them. Controls are easy to figure. This thing is damn clear, and has a great personality.

I'm damn happy with my purchase!!!!

So people, do we post pics here, or on flikr???

Thanks...DS3

hi DS3,

erm...my opinion is we can post in flikr link or whatever...as long as u share something...

***********************************************************************************************************

Welcome jamieyeap91, G12 is great camera. i have post a ebook link in 1st post...u can read to know more about this camera.

**************************************************************************************************************

hi lee82gx,

1. for continuous shooting like a dslr is it possible?
ans: can continuous shooting, but max is 2fps (G12), impossible shoot like dslr speed...

or if i press the shutter continuously, how many frames per second will it capture before it stops for processing?
ans: 2 fps it will capture (G12)

is it possible for this camera to shoot at 2fps for 5 sec continuously (focus fixed)?
ans: yes, make sure mmc is enough space and shoot in P mode or M mode. Focus fixed is 2fps, but it can AF then will slow to 1fps.

all ans are based on having G12 three week...

So you just had to try it huh bro?

Well, it's all good, right?

Wow ..and you had a G10 with 14mp!

But I think you also see that even though the Mp has decreased, the quality is better....yes?

Added on November 19, 2010, 10:29 amQuestion for everyone....

Which Memory card do you find best?

Do we need the fastest ones..and does it make that much of a difference?

I went to a Canon shop in LYP, and the guy was selling a Sony SD card Class 4. He said this was best for the 550d in 1080p video mode. That was his justification.

What do you guys know / feel?

Tks...

Speed Class Rating

The Speed Class Rating is the official unit of speed measurement for SD Cards, defined by the SD Association. The Class number represents a multiple of 8 Mbit/s (1 MB/s), and it measures the minimum sustained write speeds for a card in a fragmented state [11].
The following are the ratings of some currently available cards: [12]

Class 0 - These cards do not specify performance, which includes all legacy cards prior to class specifications.
Class 2 - Minimum of 2 MB/s performance. Lowest speed for SDHC cards.
Class 4 - Minimum of 4 MB/s performance.
Class 6 - Minimum of 6 MB/s performance.
Class 10 - Minimum of 10 MB/s performance.

From wiki.

So, if ur 1080HD recording is 10MB/s then ur card(class 2) might take longer time or eat up the buffer in ur camera a lot...means performance will be slower...

If that place in BB Plaza can't sell it at RM 1620, just go next door to Low Yat Plaza. I'm sure you can get it for RM 1650 (the official Canon dealer on the 2nd floor). Anyway, there are bargains in this area so don't worry...you can walk out with the G12 on that day! smile.gif

My battery is ori...I got from the Canon place for RM 1650 + 4GB SD Card.

fr my estimation using own 8G card, 4G card can holds 1.3k pics shooting at full 10MP n 2.1k pics wf 6MP, both in fine detail. if use normal compression setting wil double up the storage capacity.
talkin bout fine/ normal quality, did any1 here rily look into difference btw d IQ of the 2? i m havin hard time distinguish btw them...

oso a trusted reseller fr HK, can't recall name. cost me rm55 for A+B adaptor plus flower petal lens hood.free shipping took ard 3weeks.
impractical... Put on A adaptor lens can oni zoom to ard 50mm b4 touchin my uv protector lens 58mm. put on A+B adaptor thn can zoom to full 5x BUT- serious vignetting happens fr 28mm-40mm!!
so no point using these crap. shud get a 72mm adaptor instead but so far i think oni Lensmate offers it at a high cost. ONE more thing is tat these adaptors block ur built-in flash, making bottom part of ur photo undrxpose. If u read tis earlier sure cancel ur purchase a mth ago rite bro?

Here's pic of my holy crap...

if compare G to a dslr of cz regret, excluding aspects like portability n cost-saving. if u shoot a lot under lowlight n demand bigsize printout thn consider tis fact: D500 iso performance at 800 is similar to iso 200 quality on G11/12, given it's sensor size is 6x bigger thn G's. in term of macro, G's result is not too shabby while save u fr buying a macro lens for SLR. Since u shoot cars (static rite?) thn shootin n AF speed of G shud b edequate.

reference price for G11 is rm1599 n G12 is rm1710, so i think worth2 spend xtra 100 for HD video recording, hybrid IS n HDR mode.

i bought my G12 is rm1620 two month ago, the price might go up a bit already ? haha~ rm1710?

Ofcoz is G12 better(RM1620), if not just buy ur budget item(G11) which is as good as u can expected from G series camera...

best for travel camera, top5 of compact-pro camera, top5 of secondary camera from DSLR.

it worth every money u paid...

Hi guys and gals, i just received a very mint condition canon g10 with 8gb sd card with battery and a charger as a christmas present from my dad's friend...but Im more of a DSLR guy so i was wondering how much is the 2nd hand value of it in low yat forum?

I dont know the exact age as he didnt give the box or any warranty receipt with it...and quite paiseh to ask him for it since it was a gift anyway...

So i would want to post it on the classifieds but what would its value be? Thanks!

hi DerangedPreacher,

G10 is a good all around camera. since u own DSLR, why dun keep it as a secondary camera from DSLR?

When war coming is better u have a machine gun(DSLR) with powerful pistol(G10)...

How much did your adapter part A and B cost? Gear51 selling G12 adapter and he says that the thread size is for 58mm lens.
Yours has got 2 parts meaning can fix more types, is it in a package deal?

my adapter: Part A (58mm) + Part B (58-72mm) + any 72mm filter

i m try to explain the adapter things...

1. The adapter will have 2 pieces like mine.
2. you can just put on the Part A (middle part in my picture), but u cannot zoom, becoz it is too short.
3. When u add the second part of adapter (Part B), then u can zoom to max.
4. The Part B will have few versions, for mine is 58-72mm adapter (solve corner black when no zoom), for another is 58-58mm adapter (only different is got corner black when no zoom)
5. The best adapter is from Canon XXX (forget the name). Please check in the 1st post...(that adapter is small and flexible length when we zoom in and out)

ask any question u have...haha~

Just to briefly explain and share this information:

Part A and Part B is like what davinyan just mention, Part A is not for zoom purpose, its mainly just for you to put in wide angle or filters.

When you put in Part A, you can't zoom, else you'll have lens error (hit the filter/external lens)

As for Part B, it solely only for tele lens or if you on budget, its for you to create a similar-to-fish tank-effect-but-wont-alter-your-photo-quality.

Yes there is several brands, i personally using kiwifotos and lensmate (not promoting but those 2 are third party that provides 72mm for G series)

Hello Everyone smile.gif

I want to know if anyone has seen the new filter adapter for the G12 here in Malaysia? Right now, I just can't find the Official Canon FA-DC58B sad.gif

How about the adapter from the other companies (namely the Lensmate G12/G11/G10 Quick-Change Adapter Kit 52mm)

I don't want to put those "take apart" type of adapters on my gear.

Thanks....

G10 user checking in! LOLz

by the way, wanna ask those who are using G10, have you tried using a 32gb SDHC memory card on it? wondering if this camera can support 32gb. currently, full memory on my 16gb after filling up my 8gb card. so thinking of buying a 32gb one but afraid it might not be able to support.

anyone, pls advice!

thanks in advance ^^

Welcome kono,

from the free gift (they claim is free gift lar) u get, is reasonable price.

my package is camera, charger, battery, case, USB cable, 4GB = RM15XX

buy G12 or Lx5 wont regret. Image quality is about the same. u just need to consider which style u like.

Clearly, the G12 is more user friendly in term of control and menu.

So welcome u again, join us and share anything u like...^^

need some advice here on the low light function.

i m still new to this camera therefore i switch to low light function during the annual dinner in ballroom.

the image quality look nice when view on Cam, but after export to PC, the image pixel was blurr.

Futher explanation is, i use low light function the whole night without using any flash on.

result, out of ballroom with sufficient light, the picture quality is great, but inside ballroom and low light area, the picture was blurr(not hand shaking), quality is like taking with cellphone.

its this normal? please help. cry.gif

Yep, because you using low light mode, the camera will choose very high ISO to compensate for low light. In this case, your image will look grainy. Is better to control ISO manually if you wan better image quality. Lower ISO is always better. Try Google ard for different ISO settings to see the differences. And look out for Aperture and Shuttle Speed as well : ) then u will have a basic understanding how they all works together

you should use flash with lower ISO. If you use low light mode, even in a sufficient light place, the picture still look more noise compare to low ISO setting.

Now, Low Light Mode is for printing a small size picture. if u view in computer with bigger screen, the picture will look bad.

Any problem with this flash?

1. After attached flash, if u turn on ur G12 1st then turn on flash. The flash LED wont on, but flash is function. Just LED bug.
2. I not sure the TTL is function or not? I just set the flash to Auto. So, ISO is Auto too.

Overall:

1. The flash power is very good.
2. Camera + Flash + adapter 55-72mm = heavy head. but is ok to hold in both hand when shooting.
3. Price is reasonable.

Guys, i'm planning to get a Canon G12. Please advice where is the best place in KL to get this baby...

Added on May 27, 2011, 4:07 pmOh...what is the best memory card should i get for the G12?
Plan to trade in and upgrade the memory card that comes with.

Just a moderate user, maybe some video from time to time.

I have a 16gb class 4 but i'm afraid it might be too slow for video or high res photo.

Advice pls...Thanks

just go ahead and use the g12 without any acc first, u will love it.
once you hands on, u can consider:
-extra battery
-additional memory card with higher class (eg:class 10 16gb)

if not enuf, u can upgrade with:
-external flash (eg: canon speedlite 270ex II)

I personally think adding the lens will be the last step.

if u can affort, get the class 10 memory card, faster.

cons on this camera depends on how do you compare to which model.

can share one of the cons will be no stereo audio recording, but for me is not a big deal.

u can google it, just type "canon powershot g12 reviews", tons of reviews for u including pros n cons.

G12 user... been using adapters from Lensmate instead of Canon as it gives no vignetting...

http://www.lensmateonline.com/store/g10.html

I do think that adding a ability to accept filters for G12 is an added advantage for shooting... you can add Polarizer which is a very nice and useful filter when shooting under bright sun light. Other than that, you can add in all sorts of conversion lens such as tele-converter, macro magnification, ND filter and etc... it gives you more creativity to compose and create that lovely shot...

However, this is really depends on individual, as you need some bucks to get all those equipment. Some of the effect you can actually get it from photoshop... so, it's up to you to decide whether to do heavy photoshop to get the effect you one later, or get the effect with the accessories before hand.

Retail price showed: RM 1899.
Market price: from RM 1530 (free 4gb SDHC, case, screen proctector).

Price may vary from shop to shop. you have to look around.

G12 noobie reporting in... just picked mine up from a shop in Shah Alam. Paid 1480 cash for it including 4gb card and that retro case... gonna sell the case ASAP and get better neoprene one.

just ordered Op/Tech's neoprene case and hand strap; a remote shutter switch and an additional batt off amazon... maybe get the 420ex later too..

now that i have a compact that can fit in my EDC bag, looks like my ole DSLR is heading to the drybox for a long R&R.

erm....

I just hope the next G13 is like NEX5, bcoz the size of G is quite similar to NEX5 without the lens, but NEX5 have a much bigger sensor...

i dun mind to bring a small fix-zoom lens with bigger sensor like m4/3.

BUT Now, the G12 still my best camera.

i quite sure you cant remove the date and time from the picture once it stick on.

Unless you edit it in the PS or take another photo after you turn the function off....

Added on November 26, 2011, 4:26 pmi want share a small tips:

When we use Tv or M mode, if you need a faster shutter but you dun want waste time to test which ISO is suitable for that shutter speed, just put to ISO to AUTO. So you will get the shutter speed you want. This is quite easy step. but i never bother to put ISO to AUTO(for image quality). so sometime i miss the moving object by adjusting suitable ISO.

Maybe just me dun like high ISO, so my ISO always 80...haha....

as a facebook profile pic is small ofcoz....normally 50X50 or a little bit bigger...but your G11, most fine pic is more than 3000X2000, smaller when you decrease the picture quality.

Welcome liquid_hermit,

That lensmate is quite good, and nicely attached the lens...look more pro feel....
if The receiver with adhesive ring (Part 1 - stays on the camera) is stick so well that it wont drop off when you put inside ur bag or when some force is on the part. Then i sure this is a good deal.

i have the old type of adapter that look like: similar to lensmate, i bought from HK ebay seller.
1. Lensmate G12/G11/G10 Adapter - Part A (the base)
2. Lensmate G12/G11/G10 Adapter - Part B ( the 72mm filter holder)
3. 72mm UV filter
my PRO and CONS is the two part make your G12 became bigger, and block the flash. It matter to someone.

have a look,
58mm lens adapter (a clone of FA-DC58B)

liquid_hermit, you can try pm the RM35 seller ask him. Or you want direct go and "BANG" the seller that sell you RM150 (also can). B4 you go and "BANG", check other online shop to confirm the price, like amazon, ebay....or other online camera shop. Coz some fake filter can be cheap.

Lensmate G12 Quick-Change Filter Holder kit 52mm might never sell in malaysia, you have to buy it online. Small % camera shop have (coz is too expensive compare to Made in China), but i never search b4. Fastest way is buy it online.

UV filter quality is depends on the price, what you paid is what you get.
i get a second hand 72mm UV HAKUBA(dun know what brand, never heard b4) for rm50 or less.

so normally for G12, a normal filter will do the job.

u r looking for picture i taken? or picture of the camera with the adapter? haha...
i would recommend u take on the quick change and not the other tube adapter... not worth to invest for the later in my opinion. but for the quick change definitely is very very useful. I use it often with CPL or UV filter and the result is great. i also tried with Macro conversion lens and wide angle conversion lens on the quick change adapter itself.

here are some pics... u can check them in my flickr... search my username the.mono.eye

shot with Macro conversion lens
user posted image

shot with wide angle conversion lens

shot with Grad Filter (this is another option with those square filter, not the quick change. i borrow it from my fren, u can consider it)

This is wif CPL, but not a very good example... i cant really find one at the moment...

both wide angle and macro conversion lens i used was from Raynox (I can't recall the exact model i'm using, those lens are not with me at this moment). u can find some in the Shashinki website or the lensmate website as well.

quick change is better in my opinion bcos it stick on the front of the lens, therefore no issue in vignetting and so on. with the tube adapter, u wil get less flexibility. i will post some shot when i'm free to do so. haha.

anyway, thanks for the compliment. still working hard on my works.

Though I'll just share a pic taken with my lovely g12 smile.gif

By the way, I've just bought a Conversion Lens Adapter LA-DC58K and was just wondering if I can add filter on top of it?

i think it should be able to use filter of 58mm...

G1X seems nice... but i will wait and see wat Canon will offer for the Mirror-less first before jump ship...

You should compare with other large sensor cameras like m43 and slr
not x10 or xz1. Those cameras have lens f3.5 to 5.6 as common so f2.8-5.6
is considered an improvement no? Also DOF and better iso performance
associated with large sensor. But it is fugly that everyone will agree. laugh.gif

i think Canon should have:
remove the view finder
remain or improve battery life (G1X battery life is lower than G12)
allow filter + lens hood attach at once (now only can attach one at a time)
brighter lens
wider lens (28mm in this form is just not wide enough IMO)

well, overall is nice camera, but i will wait and see wat can they offer for the mirror less... i think it should be a better camera than G1X

i think if canon cannot come out some prime lens for their mirror less, it wont be so attractive as G. Or if their EF lens can use together, then it will be a big advantage....wahaha~

Added on January 11, 2012, 12:12 pmi want a better viewfinder on new G. at least cover 90% haha~
Canon mirror less have viewfinder also an advantage compare to other...but at least 90% too lar...

i like viewfinder shooting...

i think constant f2.8 will make this thing super expensive and heavy too.

This is like a camera that can replace ur DSLR when u dun have it around u..... their thinking is if u owned a DSLR why should u go buy another interchangeable lens camera? All the hassle for wat? Just to buy more lens ah? and carry more stuff with u.

So end up they said what the market needs now is a portable serious PnS with large sensor. The lens cannot argue loh.... since this is an big sensor camera usually lens need to be bigger (really bigger) than most of those m43 or compact PnS. And to achieve f2.0 the thing will be really big and bulky, they try their best to give u the best of both world.

I wont be surprise the IQ is better than Nikon 1 and m43.... need to wait for the end product come out with some picture then we will know whether the lens is good or not.

actually,we only assume f2.8 constant aperture would be big for such sensor, but in actual with today engineering it can be a smaller, and by how small does the size become acceptable?
mmm....think about today crazy super duper ultra zoom prosumers camera,i think if they were to make a good aperture lens on g1x,the size would aproximate of superzoom of today or maybe smaller
superzoom prosumer are big,and ppl accept they should be big because they are "PROSUMER" so nobody complaint, but when a genuinely enthusiast crowd g1x get bigger, everybody like oh no....this is enthusiast camera....it should be small and cute~performance?narhhhh i don't care

my thought is,if they can produce a camera of the size of superzoom, throw the ultra useless long focal length away replace with good aperture and sensor size and sensible focal length, now that would be seriously big threat to mirrorless camera

i think to develop a small size fixed aperture zoom lens the price is gonna be at least 2-3 times more than the current one. Becoz now u are not only making a fixed aperture lens like those Canon L lens, u are also trying to shrink something that is big into a smaller size..... the cost of it may not be cheap.

leave the cost calculation, design work to them, don't assume base on our common sense, manufacturers always make wonders when market put pressures on them

Personally I think this one is just physics.. big physical sensor require big glass to cover the whole sensor. Come to think of it, at least the glass part is muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch smaller than the NEX kit lens.
It's a pity glass kenot be softmodded.

Edit: Hmm ... just recalled... the next big thing could be liquid lens

true...but most of those superzoom prosumer employs a 1/2.33" sensor...look at how big m4/3 14-60mm is...and it's not even constant aperture..

yeah i guess the front element would be bigger, but then let say as big as superzoom with superzoom 800mm f6.3?i think thats ok right, but i always love the looks of lens with big glass
with power zoom and focus nowadays,at least length wise they can escape with it

The previous G1-5 is F2, although is not fix lens, but have a F2 at wide.

i always wonder why canon take out this advantage.
Once Canon still produce "G" size camera, it will be popular. Now, Canon give out a bigger sensor. The next next G i pray for a better lens. Step by step...>,<

Added on January 11, 2012, 7:30 pmWhen i look back the previous G, Canon even put a small panel on top. Look at G6 like a mini DSLR...haha...
Canon have all the technology, just have to pick out which...

here's an aspect i concern most bout g1x,and dpreview pointed out

"Much the same reasoning applies when considering how well each camera will be available to deliver blurred backgrounds when shooting portraits. Here the optical calculations deliver an answer that some may find surprising: when shooting portraits at the long end of the zoom with the lens wide open, the G1 X will offer little advantage over either the X10 or XZ-1 in terms of subject isolation and background blur"

so bokehian folks, nothing ground breaking here in term of subject isolation

if you can get G12 around RM1400 or lower, is a good buy...You can look at fujifilm X10 which is stylish and a bit smaller...ofcoz also is a "bit" expensive too~>.< Get a hand on Lx5 too, then you will know what good on G12 and Lx5.

Yes, the image quality vs price. you should get G12.

The new G1x cost USD799 (almost RM2500), you can get a EOS 600D liao.

Looking at that too. It's out of stock everywhere! Is the G12 still better than the S100? I kinda like the G12 as it seems sturdier but it lacks certain things that the S100 has - because it has been over 1+ years since release of G12.

both specs are very similar.

the major difference is the size and design:

G12 still can't fit into a pocket while s100 fit it easily.

I copied the link of comparison for you:

cheers!

u r looking for picture i taken? or picture of the camera with the adapter? haha...
i would recommend u take on the quick change and not the other tube adapter... not worth to invest for the later in my opinion. but for the quick change definitely is very very useful. I use it often with CPL or UV filter and the result is great. i also tried with Macro conversion lens and wide angle conversion lens on the quick change adapter itself.

here are some pics... u can check them in my flickr... search my username the.mono.eye

shot with Macro conversion lens

shot with Grad Filter (this is another option with those square filter, not the quick change. i borrow it from my fren, u can consider it)

This is wif CPL, but not a very good example... i cant really find one at the moment...

the quick change basically is allow you to use filter on your G12... there's an extra pieces attached to the front part of the lens, and that allows you to put in any type of screw-in filter to enhance your picture

http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/G10.html

I bought it when I first bought my G12... been using for more than a year now...

i prefer take landscape... well, i think i have listed all the gears i'm using through the photo samples i shown above...

my other gear is speedlite... well, not quite relevant to landscape though.
you can consider ND filter if you want more freedom to control the light (G12 has 1 bulit in ND filter though), or you can consider using grad filter or big stopper for landscape... other filter you can look into will be those warming filter for sunset/sunrise shooting and etc... too much to list out... lol

xylemxvessel, Check lensmate.com, i have one set adapter, fancy to use for one year, now is without it. only when special occasion bring.

Added on February 17, 2012, 8:12 pmBy the way, G1X, how you guys think about it?

i think that is big, but reasonable. also DigitalRev does not like it so much. but it still have G1X market....

i can find love for this G1x... at first i thought it would be great but after looking at the end product in the digitalrev i got to admit it is really "it aint fast, aint high tech, aint retro" which i find it lossing out the point of purchassing it....

i would even choose the Fuji newest X-S1 over this camera.

to get bokeh effect/shallow depth of field, there are 2 possible way:
1. use big aperture (F2.8 for instance) in order to focus only the subject closest to the camera while the rest of the background out of focus (bokeh)
2. control the distance between u n the subject. subject closer to u, easier to get bokeh background. this can b done by walk closer to the subject, or use telephoto lens...

user posted image
this pic taken with F4.5 but still hav the bokeh effect, bcos i zoom in telephoto... method 2

user posted image
this pic is combination of method 1 and 2, F2.8 + close to subject.

user posted image
another example of bokeh background done by method 2... telephoto lens, F4.5

Of cos using macro mode is easier to get bokeh, bcos in that mode means u r getting close to the subject. u can try out with ur camera and u wil know wat i mean...

guys..im thinking of buying a canon filter adapter 58mm + wide angle lens 58mm 0.45x and has a 68mm front threads for filter.
is that a good combination and would it cause vignetting? hmm.gif hope to hear opinions from you all.cheers notworthy.gif

Not too sure about the lens you are using, but the Raynox wide angle lens I'm using is OK without vignetting.

why they dun keep the ISO dial, but keep the EV dial?

The ISO dial should be more useful right? or it is just for me...

for me, since i use the live view most of the time, so i can adjust according to what i see without the need to dial in the EV... so ISO is more important to me.

I'm upgrading from using a S-series (PowerShot S80, ancient blush.gif to the latest G-series...I am still learning. Getting to know the camera and it's limitations. I am impress by how beautiful the photos are at high ISO. Took a few test shots, but none worthy yet to post here as "poison" tongue.gif

The accessories I am waiting for are the underwater housing WP-DC44, extra battery, and the lens adapter 58mm Canon FA-DC58C.

Happy Shooting!

for macro G12 is about 15mm (correct me if i m wrong), quite useful sometime...

But as G1X have bigger sensor, the lens on G1X have limited. So just shoot at 20mm then zoom in at PC or crop at Full Size...which is also a good solution.

i think i have introduced this method b4 in previous post.

of course not for pocketable, looking stg tat can give quality image....
going to backpacking....DSLR is little too 'huge' for me....so wish to grab 1 compact camera...n hope tat wat im choose not going to be a decision tat make me regret...haha
*
Ofcoz the G1X or G12 will suit ur backpacking trip... i spend 6 months with my G12 at NZ Backpacking...

G12 is working great in NZ...portable...long battery life....image quality....so much....JUST LOVE IT....

Compare to my friend (backpack with me), who is new to camera but carry DSLR, during the trip, he is like turn on and off...without shooting too many photo...and battery gone soon ( bcoz always playing around with the setting but not taking photo)

ehh you're missing the point.

Sure, I've been using that cropping work around for my many of my shots but the reason people buy it at 14MP is to use the 14MP, not to shoot the subject and have a huge area around it and having to crop. smile.gif

How about you just read it a few pages back?

It's already launched, price is about RM 2.2k range.

comments also provided in past few pages, unless you have more specific to ask.

Btw, can I know where were u got ur G1X and what is the price??
Sorry for telling that I'm just a beginner for photography.. And I'm going to UK to study on May, so I'm thinking to buy a camera which is not as heavy/huge as dslr, but can take quality photos..

Any comment and comparison for the CANON G1X and the Nikon 1??

Thanks =)

nikon 1 is smaller if you just get a pancake lens, bigger when zoom lens)

If you want zoom lens with smaller body then G1X.

In term of total quality, i vote for Canon.

they have clearly stated in the official announcement they will do nothing about it since this is rare case...
and firmware fix will not possible i guess... if it is related to the shutter or lens structure
i don think this will be a big issue either judging from all the readings from the link. G1X user will still love it...
I just get to try one G1X last week... it feels much better than my G12... argh...

i never tested side by side to compare V1 and G1X, but i think sharpness and ISO G1X will triumph due to much larger sensor.
wake up time for G1X is around... 2 sec... if i remember correctly. photo taking speed i can't recall... i got poor memory, even though i just played with a G1X 2 only 2 weeks ago... =.=

Why pre-order when almost all stores at 1 utama carry G1X; probably 1 unit each.

Just last week, saw 2 units at Jusco 1 Utama at RM2,299.

if you use GX1, you will need to change lens rite? G1X is having built in lens, so this is part of the difference you need to consider.
picture quality wise, not so sure cos never compared them directly before.
but the size for both camera is more or less the same right? and i prefer canon's control layout personally

finally decided to jump ship to G1 X... promised myself to stick with it for the next few years... and try to improve my photography first before thinking of getting anything new...

Will shift some of my accessories for G12 over to use in G1 X... but wonder what to do with my G12 + lensmate and some other accessories such as 52mm filters... hmm...

By the way, if anyone interested, lensmate is shipping custom made G1 X filter adapter... slightly cheaper than the Canon version.

Me new g1x user too, since Friday smile.gif

Am now looking for g1x cases which will allow me to ditch the lens cap.

Main candidate would be like the case mentioned in canon.jp :
http://cweb.canon.jp/cgi-bin/camera/dcam/a...i?pr=psg1x&ct=0

This guy has similar stuff, but not for g1x yet:
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2078124

Here's another one I'm considering (sorry, I have no brand loyalty tongue.gif). But does anyone know if this one will still require the lens cap?:
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2157482
http://www.sony.com.my/product/lcs-emc/sku/lcs-emc_bc++syh

Anyway, here's one case discussion on dpreview:

I like G1X!

But its not compact camera anymore. Ask anyone who have G1X and G12, take a pics of it side by side. its so bulky and the lense, even when turn off still "outside" the body, thus making it space consuming and fragile (for me). I am the kind of guy who dislike hanging my camera on my neck, I just simply put it inside my short/jeans pocket.

I bought it last time because when comparing it at shop, G1X sure sounds very very interesting. I am so excited to try it out, I bought without thinking. Soon, after 1 day, I realize, this camera is not for me. Not that I don't like it, G1X doesn't suits me to be exact.

But, what i regret the most about G1X is the macro mode. G1X lose to G12 when shooting in macro mode. Infact, it may be lose to G9 as well. G1X can not go as near as G12 in macro mode... and I shoot a lot of pics in this mode.

And with the price, I can get brand new Canon EOS 550D / 600D which for sure offer the best picture compared to any of the G series (bigger sensor).

G1X and G12, the size difference is negligible for me, even the weight as well. In fact i feel more comfortable holding the G1X than the G12. Thinking that Canon has put a almost L class lens + almost APS-C sensor into that body... i'm really impress and i would say it is indeed "compact" smile.gif of course you can't put it in your jeans pocket, and so does G12. But if this is your main concern (portability, where you can carry a camera everywhere you want) then G1X indeed is not suitable. You will have to look for those compacts like S100 and etc.

With the same price you can get entry level DSLR (with more bulk!) indeed. So it is up to user to choose to go for DSLR or G1X. For me, I'm happy with my G1X as i get DSLR quality image, without needed to burden myself with the lens and heavy body of the DSLR. So G1X is a compact for me icon_rolleyes.gif

this, that's why I have +4 close up filter everywhere I go with the G1X.

G1X or G12, this is very subjective. I mean, we can not say I am right or wrong, so does you. It totally depends on the user itself. I used to own G1X too, and just like you, i pretty happy with all the feature and all, in fact the size and weight are very comfortable for me too, but like i said before, i might damaging the camera before i learn how to use it well. Besides G12 fits perfectly in all my trousers, jeans, shorts pockets!

G1X or DSLR : Depends. If you really have thick pocket and wallet, you are free to buy either one or both, but if like me, ngam-ngam for 1 month makan only, i will choose the best, such as picture quality, functions and of course the endurance/toughness. Besides, DSLR will not eaten by age, compare to compact. G1X today, after a few months G1Y may come out, replacing the older one. DSLR, you only need to pick what level you are at.

@goldfries

I need extra pocket for that if I were you. Hahaha, but that will cover up the contra.

G12 is not compact also... i wonder how u fit that into your jeans cos i have never succeeded before... hmm.gif maybe u are wearing loosy jeans?
yes, it is very subjective... i didn't say your view point is wrong. I just want to say that I can accept the slight increase in bulk of the G1X compared to G12.
Cos mostly i will put my camera into my bags and that's it. Well, even G1Y or G2X comes out, G1X will still remains and still can do the job well. Just like G10, G11 and G12 are still giving nice photo even though G1X has arrived biggrin.gif
For me, I buy a camera and use it to it's fullest, just like handphone. If you keep yourself on with the new spec game... you will need a deeeeeeep wallet... laugh.gif
Looking forward for you to post some pictures that you have taken with your G12 (other than the bolt and nut and keyboard...)
G12 is a very nice camera, go out and take some shoot!

G12 in pocket : I will keep you wondering about that brows.gif

I agree with your point there, but once again everything depends on the user. I love G1X as well but my 'shooting environment' doesn't suitable for G1X in term of the safety, that is why I opted to own G12 instead.

G12 and G1X : still a compact camera but bit oversize from average.
G12 = fat compact
G1X = obese compact

laugh.gif

the bolts and keyboard pic are testing picture only, wait for it. I will upload more. No time yet.

Why don't you show us what you can do with your G1X then?

I think G1X have more detail when you zoom in...this extra detail sure fit some photographer usage...

But G12 also have similar great photo taken, photographer who need more compact....this will be your choice...

Just buy what you need when you are taking photo....

One year ago i thought i will buy DSLR after having a G12....
The truth is i have no need for DSLR...the G12 give me more than enough nice photo and great shoot....

Video mode G12 vs G1X = G1X slightly better quality

how if G1X compared to DSLR (Goldfries might have a good opinion about this)

p/s : never go video mode with my G9 and probably will not too with G12.

in terms of casual shooting, it is more than enough (for both G12 & G1X). If you want to produce high quality result, of cause DSLR will give you more flexibility and ability to choose what you want to focus throughout the video... G1X only can allow you to auto focus, and the new addition is to have the optical zoom during video (which G12 do not have). Nothing much you can do on the setting to achieve certain effect. While for DSLR, you can get creative with all sorts of lens as well. But if you are shooting in a rather controlled environment, the quality is very acceptable even for G12. You just need to shoot within the limitation of the camera and you will get good result. Well, this is my opinion after shooting with my G12 all this while + a little experience over the G1X...

i'm using g11, and discovered that all my shots had a vertical line at every pics (around the middle of the pics)... the line is quite thin, and faint, but it's obvious there's a visible line when you view the pics...

anyone knows the reason for this?
