‘Bus was going way too fast’, claim passengers

SEREMBAN: The express bus, which crashed into a guardrail and rammed onto the path of oncoming vehicles near the Simpang Ampat toll plaza, was going very fast at the time of the accident.

Nurshazwina Nordin, 23, who was onboard the bus, said she was almost flung out of the vehicle due to the impact.

“Other motorists who stopped to help us hurried us away from the bus as they were afraid it might explode,” she said, adding that she had been sleeping when the accident took place.

Nurshazwina, who was hurt, said she felt the bus was going fast prior to the accident.

Another male bus passenger, in his 20s, claimed that the bus was accelerating before the accident.

“I thought he was driving fast for an express bus. I can’t say for sure the speed he was driving at but he seemed to be ahead of all the other vehicles,” he said.

Another injured passenger Nur Najlaa Aqilah Mohd Ghazali, 19, said a loud bang woke her up.

“I felt the bus spinning and before I knew it, we had already crashed through the guardrail and onto the path of oncoming traffic,” she said.

Among the injured was a Japanese tourist, Masatamo Yashade, believed to be a passenger of the ill-fated express bus.

Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital director Dr Ja’afar Che Mat said as at 10.30pm, 24 of the injured had been sent to the hospital for treatment.

He said 16 of the injured in the hospital were females.

“We sent one victim to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital as he suffered from heart ailment. Three others were taken in for immediate surgery,” he said, adding that nine others were sent to the Malacca Hospital.

Dr Ja’afar said the hospital had also sought assistance from personnel at the Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah and Jelebu hospitals.

“We needed more ambulances due to the high number of injured,” he said, adding that the first case was brought in at 8.05pm.

In Malacca Hospital, it is believed that out of the 12 injured being treated there, four are in critical condition, including a 42-year-old woman who is a four and half months pregnant.

The three others suffered from serious spinal, abdominal and head injuries.

It is believed that as at 1.45am, authorities were still trying to identify the bodies, some of which were badly disfigured.

The 52-year-old bus driver, from Klebang Besar, is one of those killed.

Keadaan mayat pula, katanya, amat menyedihkan.

i tell u i always drive at highway every week travel more than 1000kms , those bus drivers are really crazy they just switch lane to fast lane at 110-120kmh without signal instantly when people driving at 200 nearing them they dont give a shit at all and force ppl to emergency break doh.gif

oh yea

something interesting to share of my experience yesterday

1 ahbeng fd2 civic souped up with type R bodykit + type-r emblem + paint on disc brake but no brembo laugh.gif park right infront of the entrance of empire shopping gallery parking level 1 .. beside the pay machine kena clammed ... when i first came in it wasnt clammed and i tot this must be an ahbeng with no respect coz simply park tepi jalan kacau the parking exit only... then when i going back saw he was squatting beside his clammed car..

2nd ahbeng driving white fd2 2.0 highway was jammed stucked at 100-120 and this FD2 keep flash flash flash non stop like crazy for over 10mins doh.gif rclxub.gif

Kemalangan maut di Alor Gajah, 10 terbunuh
Harakahdaily

Keadaan mayat pula, katanya, amat menyedihkan.

"Ada yang putus tangan, ada yang pecah kepala dan hancur badannya,"beritahu Roslan lagi yang masih terperangkap di tempat kejadian bersama keluarganya.

Agreed. Somehow the road hogger have to take part of the responsibility as well. If they didn't go too slow & hog the lanes, I'm sure express bus wouldn't want to perform their zig zag-ing stunt.

This is a terrible incident. Unfortunately, this is not the first time accident happens on express bus too.

I hope one day, we can take train and arrive at a destination with reasonable time in future.

need to educate bus driver the use OF BRAKE instead of coming out suddenly at fast lane

fking fk tard always want to force ppl to emergency brake in over to avoid hitting their ass

i guess the oncoming car on the fast lane coudlt brake enough and push over the bus to the other side?

3 lane is enough for normal traffic... learn how to stay in ur line and not to switch lanes all of a sudden.... if u are driving 110kmh, look at ur rear view mirror more often... dont worry, chances of u being hit from behind is higher den u hit something...

from what i've gathered, the delima bus hit a car and went into the opposite lane, flipping over onto a car (i assume the myvi)..several more cars and a bus could not stop in time and hit the pileup

QUOTE(Danielle Lav @ Oct 10 2010, 11:24 PM)
damn, semalam was my first try driving on the highway from melaka to KL. i was sleepy while driving highway and it's scary coz my dad kept telling me not to tail gating and cut lanes.

they shud expand to 5-6 lanes  and not 3 lanes. too sempit wei. i drive near buses and lorries, i takut, keep mau cross the right lane.

RIP to those 10/11 victims.
*
There is no use in expanding the number of lanes if the driver is sleepy and cannot concentrate on driving.

Logically speaking, that is.

dad advised not to go so near with the cars in front. thats all. i got bullied on the road more than bullied others.

as long as there are women drivers, all roads should have >5 lanes. even the ones in your residential areas.
and parking spaces should be more than 9x18 meters.

Highways connecting emirates in the UAE usually have 3 lanes per direction.

Only in cities such as Dubai, they have wide roads.

i am not denying the usefulness of extra lanes. i am just noting how we tend to complain about everything we have. yes more lanes is a luxury, but for now we do have bare necessities. and i think i am right in assuming people will undeniably put on a complaint-filled front in the case of certain road closures for restoration or improvement works on the road. it's just how the general nation is. and on a technical note, it is definitely not easy to add extra lanes to the existing highway. after all, the future is supposed to be one of less cars with the depletion of fossil fuels. so there isn't really much of an investment value in terms of time and finances in this situation.

The question is that, is the incident caused by lanes or rather the driver?

Previous bus accidents (i don't mean this one, because it is just happened and nobody knows what really happens at the moment).........were mostly caused by drivers rather than road design.

we're humans, we have limitations, we're not machine to operate for a long hours.. even machines breaksdown biggrin.gif

Seremban-Gemas double tracking is now under construction.

Two of the stations are in Malacca state, but still a distance away from the Malacca city centre.

good point. apparently, to go green, pls tell the government to improve the public transportation and stop using the money for their personal use.

in this case, we need the professional to reveal but what i m i trying to say is... the lane is cramp for buses and lorries. so whenever the smaller cars passed by them, we can feel the shake (i dunno what scientific terms u call) and we are driving cars with not so good quality. thus, power control of the sterring wheel is a challenge thats why got accident.

The trains are safer for now, but its not capable to serve the needs, everyone seems to be expective early / fast arrivals, and some are seeking nearer to the destination.

I used to take train to Singapore back in 1986 .. fuh .. 7 - 8 hours sweat.gif

That is why double tracking is needed.

Currently, the track south of Seremban is single track, meaning they can only run 20 trains a day and one train have to pass at one station to let another train passes.

Kemalangan maut di Alor Gajah, 10 terbunuh
Harakahdaily

Keadaan mayat pula, katanya, amat menyedihkan.

"Ada yang putus tangan, ada yang pecah kepala dan hancur badannya,"beritahu Roslan lagi yang masih terperangkap di tempat kejadian bersama keluarganya.

Where to land?

Landing a helicopter at crowded scene is a challenge.

However, they maybe able to carry victims using rope or rail from the helicopter.

from the ambiguous number of deaths, i think some died on the way to the hospital... haizz

the worst hit victim would have been the myvi driver. Just can't imagine the condition of the victim's body.

children are usually the most susceptible as they are lighter, hence making it easier for them to be flung off.

Going for a ride in a bus nowadays is akin to risking your life in the hands of some reckless drivers, the worse being RapidKL and Metrobus drivers.

i always take reputable companies like transnasional, plusliner.
but nowadays i need to take eagle express or AB express to ride from putrajaya central.
i hope the drivers will be more careful in the future.
however, i notice that most of the buses i ride, they dont drive as fast, and usually are on the left most lane. only switches to overtake.

there are bad drivers though, drive fast n hard.

where got inertia must be on a level platform? to throw an object that is static, less force is needed. bigger objects require more effort to move. so its easier to throw something that is lighter.

inertia = an object in motion stays in motion. it is harder to stop a massive object than a smaller object with less mass.

yea, really, the bus is safer than cars.
people dont mod bus with mitsubishi engines, turbocharger and lower suspensions. then drive like acting in fat n furious.

Is still unsure .. if

1. The black box is intact
2. Speed limiter is in use
3. Coaches are not well built though .. sweat.gif

It seems the coach strength not capable to take the impact hmm.gif

JPJ has to solve speeding express buses issues. I was travelling at 110 km/h and a bus overtook me on the left at 130 km/h. No chance to react at all. If you take the politics and corruption out of JPJ, black boxes and tracking GPS systems can be installed and enforced.

We don;t need ministers or someone high up to make stupid comments. Nothing was ever learnt from the previous accidents.

My condolences to the families involved.

10 Killed in Alor Gajah’s Accident

Over than 10 people are believed to be dead in a terrible road accident when an Express Bus (Delima) travelling from Melaka towards Kuala Lumpur skidded and tumbled toward the opposite lane in KM223, Simpang Empat, Alor Gajah Melaka about 7.00pm today.

It is believed that the bus-filled with passengers, scraped with a vehicle and then skidded towards the opposite lane, which it then crashed into a passenger car that was moving towards Seremban from Melaka in the opposite lane, resulting in the bus’ overturn.

According to Roslan Abdul Hamid, who is only a few seconds late to reach the accident scene, related that the dead bodies could be seen on the Plus Highway.

“It happened about 6.50pm when the Delima Express Bus from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur brushed against a car and then crashed towards the opposite side,” said Roslan to Harakahdaily from the accident site.

A school bus and several cars were also involved in this horrible accident.

“One of the car was on fire whereas another one was crushed under the express bus,” said Roslan, who was traveling from Kuala Lumpur to his house in Melaka.

Because of this accident, the North South Plus Highway from Seremban to Melaka experience a massive jam.

“Many people was helping to pull out the dead bodies to a side and to help those that are hurt,” said Roslan.

The conditions of the bodies, said Roslan, are in terrible shape.

“Some had lost their hands, some had broken skulls, and some had fragmented pieces of bodies only,” said Roslan who was still trapped in the traffic jam with his family.

Our fair cities, tall skyscrappers and beautiful gardens, belie the savagery that plague our roads.

They say the road of Mumbai is the most dangerous in the world, But the statistic say's it us they should worry about.

Rather than saying it that way

Why not see it as God wants to send a message to others,(us) that we still overlook this matter of public transportation, of which is VERY inadequate.

Why couldn't the JPJ just install a damned speed limiter in busses? tekan >9000 force also still at 100km/h.

kan senang?

i believe we have seen so much tragic bus accident, but still penguatkuasa/bus company does not care

if install speed limiter, the bus driver might sneak in and cut off the speed limiter.

here is little difference between this and the philippines bus hijack case, only thing is the victims had instant dead, which is good, imagine being held hostage, that is worse.

drivers are working double shift - ulang-alik more than 10 more per day.. siapa boleh tahan ?
companies should only allow 1 trip per day for their drivers
and no longer than 4 hours drive, if trip takes more than 4 hours, a 2nd driver should be on board, not sleeping

if the bus fare should increase by RM1-2, so be it, for me, I rather pay the extra (for the salary of the extra driver), then die in a bus express flying at 150km/h.

All this majority come from bus driver driving attitude , becasue they wanna earn more , thus they speeding so can reach destination fast , then can earn more trip per day.

Remember few years ago , my parent went to Langkawi from malacca , the bus driver fetch them reach Langkawi , immediately driva back malacca and fetch another trip again to Langkawi , but second trip facing a small accident .

Important question is...

How can we learn from this?

There are too many accidents involving bus and nothing has been done in real.

Divider won't solve the issue.

We need to prevent the accident from happening rather than talking about cushioning the crash.

The basic point is what happened to driver?

That's why i mentioned that stronger divider won't prevent accident.

It is crucial to know what happened to the driver.

Problem is that by making the divider stronger, it won't prevent accident, because when the bus hits the divider, it may cause other cars on that same direction to be affected.

There is no proof that by making stronger divider, accidents death can be prevented.

At the same time, the highways in Japan or South Korea are similar to design in terms of barrier, but they still have lower accident deaths compared to Malaysia.

Its a common knowledge "KENDERAAN BERAT SILA IKUT KIRI" and none of them follows the designated reminder boards.

This is also applies to the laden lorries nod.gif and the safe speed which they should obey is 90km/h

I am sure you all have taken express buses before. If you take the daytime one not so bad because they can't speed. The worse is to take the late afternoon - to evening buses because I think they tend to speed around just after dark so that they want to arrive in KL before midnight. I think there is also less speed trap because police would be breaking for dinner time. The other one is the late night buses which goes without saying speed like mad. You can actually feel the bus swaying and I would say it is a gamble to travel on night buses because I am sure they are doing more than 110 as you can see them overtaking cars.

The southern part is bad because traffic is heavy despite 3 lanes and therefore it is not suprising this happened. Imagine a speeding bus would have a lot of momentum. A lot of you may not realise that the current buses are also to blame because buses like scanias are very powerful. They have a lot of safety features also but it won't stop bad driving. I honestly enjoy taking Maraliner and Transnasional because they are using scania or daewoo and they are fast but it is a gamble that I take to arrive faster.

It is nice to blame the bus drivers but really if you talk to them they have to make the trips and sleep in the bus. If I am in their shoes I would be speeding too out of boredom. I blame it on the government as compulsory speed limiters and better pay in the industry would solve the problem.

Just to add, some of the bus drivers I spoke to even boasted that he managed to do 160km on a double decker. Whether that is true or not I won't know but I definitely stop taking double deckers. If you have time speak to them as they are nice people too. Sometimes they talk to you if the bus is empty because I suspect they are tired too.

By the way if you take Maraliners there are seat belts. So I guess you won't look stupid now if you use it as the because danger is the roof top shearing off as I believe this is the weakest point in a bus.

Problem is that by making the divider stronger, it won't prevent accident, because when the bus hits the divider, it may cause other cars on that same direction to be affected.

There is no proof that by making stronger divider, accidents death can be prevented.

At the same time, the highways in Japan or South Korea are similar to design in terms of barrier, but they still have lower accident deaths compared to Malaysia.

well u got a point but still i cant stress enuf the more deadlier consiquences of fast moving vehicle ramming into the other side of the road let alone a full passenger bus! same lane cars might easily see it happening n do emergency brake.

its not about divider, its about enforcement and mentality.

should revoke the company's license.

That is why I think it is not the barrier issues. The government should implement laws to make it a disincentive to drive fast ie not based on the number of trips for the drivers to be paid.

Secondly speed limiters and GPS are needed to make sure that they cannot overspeed.

This kind of tragedy happens almost every year with successive ministers talking c**k. It is simple logic that it is bound to happen if you travel by bus from Singapore to KL and observe the speed vis a vis the traffic volume. So pray hard that the driver is skillful.

based on my exp using PLUS every week.

If u drive 110 km/h most of the express bus will potong you or follow you very closely.

If u want to potong express bus u need at least 130 km/h to do so or even more with some of the bus.

it becoz most of them are driving 120-130 km/h even for the double Decker bus.

Huh.....

Motorways are for speed of 110 km/h.

Not for 60 km/h.

Even federal roads has speed of 90 km/h in some stretches.

In Japan, highway is called as "Kosoku doro", kosoku means high speed.

If everything is 60 km/h, might as well drive on federal road.

The serious consequence of your idea...

Max speed 60 km/h, average speed most likely 45 km/h for example...

That would mean KL to JB (around 320 km lets say).... will take about 7 hours!

Most people (not you) prefer to reach destination in reasonable time and safely.

Also, for bus operation, it is inefficient to have so many stops.

QUOTE(JoLee @ Oct 11 2010, 02:26 PM)

*
So your suggestion is to use those Old Hino AK and UD?

I disagree. Speed kills. In fact in all NZ police cars at the bumper it is written there speed kills.

To some extent some of us are morally bankrupt. Driving at the highway doing 110 or more trying to overtake they tailgate you just because they drive a BMW or Mercedes. This people do it because they are proud that people should give way to them. This is tied in with our stupid notion that if you carry a Datuk title you are god.
This stupid idea is also reinforced by the stupid VVIP with their police escort. In western countries you hardly see any VVIP driving fast. In NZ, the police escort (prottection officers) and driver for the Prime Minister was charged in court for dangerous driving. NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW.

Then you also have the dumb Wajas and Viva doing more than 110km. This people are just plain stupid.

So therefore all this things happen to some extent because we lack ethics here. I can't wait till you have more Wajalution. Every ah beng and ah kow will be tailgating you because they now drive a Evo.

Again I blame this on our "enforcer" of the law. People can drive on emergency lane and get away with it. So why not let us cut queue, beat the traffic lights, break speed limit.

Last year, there was serious accident involving an express bus.

This year, again.

That is why I say the current politicians talk "c*ck". They will have all sorts of enquiry and bull shit. They may even visit the accident scene or even close down the company but why does it still happen?

This is not the 1st time but so many times already.

Let me make this suggestion and I don't know whether you agree:

1. The northern bus crashes is often due to driver fatigue ie falling asleep. (happens at night mostly)

2. The southern region is due to bus speeding in a very congested highway.

You ignorant shallow fool, how do you expect a express coach to lose control at god knows how fast starting a chain of accidents at an expressway in Ampang?

Lame idiocy like that of yours might be tolerated most of the time amongst Chinks like you here but your god damn jokes sure as hell doesn't feel right to the few those who lost friends and/or relatives in this incident.

Overhaul of how the bus industry runs and regulation is much needed.

Until then, people should take train, bus from reputable ones or fly (if they can afford).

If driving, keep safe distance, as this is the best that one can do for now.

I think the best way to reduce bus driver to speed is -
Salary payment by min
Example : Destination A to B = 2 hours with max 110km

Payment is = 2 hours trip Destination A to B = Rm 80
Payment is = 3 hours trip same Destination A to B = Rm 150
Payment is = 4 hours trip same Destination A to B = Rm 250

Sure those bus driver will driver extremely slow 50km because of it .

Errmmm... By offering this package, also cant guarantee they won't go speeding...
They still can drive 130km/h - 140km/h, but make few more stops at R&R area. End up, reach destination in 3 hours. Win-win solution for driver - earn more money and yet can drive fast.

Well, one of my idea is the bus company provide feedback form to every passenger in the bus. Commission will be given to bus driver base on passengers feedback. Fair enough I believe.

Oh yeah, like the train is efficient. I remember having spent nearly 10 hours on the train from Kiasuland to the Klang Valley when my peers took just 4 hours traveling along the highway, all while stopping over at Malacca for an hour and two.

Double tracking and electrification won't help either because the service will suffer the same fate as the Komuter down the line; increased ridership and poor management translates to very slow expansion of the rolling stock and rapid deterioration of existing trains and railway equipment. Speed will not matter if they remain very infrequent because it leads to long waiting times.

You're just better off taking the plane, even if it means spending more money and fuel. It's even more so after they demolish what colonial remains of the railway is left. Nobody wants to take pictars of shitty plastic stations, tunnels and bridges.

I never say railway is so efficient at this moment, i do suggest people to take other modes of transport whenever possible and available. The long time taken by train to south is due to the alignment and track design. In theory, double track capacity is 10 times of current single track.

I believe it is still important to expand railway service. In Malacca case, it is still possible to reinstate part of the old Tampin-Malacca line which was dismantled back in World War II.

Plane is inefficient in carrying high number of passengers. The relatively short distance of Malaysian cities that could be covered by air makes commuter plane service is inefficient, unlike in the US, where most of its people fly or drive on the interstates.

At the end of the time, it makes to expand rail because it is more efficient in any measure.

Management is one issue ( i do agree that Komuter service leaves much to be desired), but i believe giving the people the choice of alternative public transport is another important issue.

This is my view, and i do respect your view.

They are just waiting for someone to sapu all compulsory GPS installation. As ususal the system instead of costing RM2k will be like RM10k and it will be so state of the art that nobody can repair it. 5 years later we are back to no GPS.

People here are not worried about safety. Only interested in making a quick buck and then you have all sorts of wonderful proposals. More advance than NASA can track their satellites.

Unfortunately, we are in a situation where public transport is so unattractive that we are compelled to drive or take a private bus instead of taking the train or public bus, and I expect this trend to continue into the foreseeable future (despite the fact we are well on our way to becoming a net importer of oil in a few years).

Having seen how the government exerts control on trains services and bus services yet is still able to mismanage them, how the hell am I to believe that this would be any different? They must had dumped billions into these transport systems for 20 years, and what we have now is valued much lower than that.

BTW, I admire how you're open to opinions; friggin' rarity on the Internets.

There are reasons why rail is better for west coast Malaysia (i do hope somehow in the future, track can be built from KL passing through the mountain range, then to Mentakab, to Kuantan).

In theory, taking plane is more costly, especially for students or blue collar workers.

- Travel to Subang or LCCT (costs money afterall, Klang Valley is not small Kajang on one side, Rawang on one side, Klang on one side etc.)

- Infrequent services makes it more time consuming as one would have to be in the airport earlier

- Procedures such as check-in and security makes one would have to be in the airport way way earlier

- Airports are only in major state capitals, meaning if you arrive at the airport, most likely the person still need to take bus to final destination, incurring cost and time to the travel

For west coast, the only major state capital that is not covered is Malacca, fixing that will help a lot.

At the end, fix the bus service and operation and longer term, expand rail.

Double tracking is not a perfect solution, but it is definitely will solve much of the issue on public transport (because of the aforementioned points above).

Maybe this suggestion wasn't that good. The problem also lies to bus company , sometimes feedback will get ignore since both also involve together , remember last time where a bus driver got 80 plus summon but the bus company ignore them (bribe )

Anyhow , the other good way to fix speed limit issue is to lock the bus speed.Somehow someone mention it just now.
Just underclock the bus to max is 100km will fix it issue.

Second , is the police part , hoping no bribe for this issue , once a bus driver caught of speeding on the spot , terus gantung licensed for 1 month. 3 times gantung , and licensed get cancel + jail.

Third , passenger roll , giving tips will do.All passenger can rate them by giving tips to bus driver who is driving slow and steady during the trip.

Gov set rules , passenger can refund the ticket if they can prove the bus exist the limit 100km.

seriously, this vids is overrated.. so horrible..

101010 tragedy is somehow teach me not to:
1. using public transportation especially express bus for long distance travel
2. never trust a driver with weird look (drug addict, drunker, etc)
3. driver smart with relevant speed
4. always keep an eye of any bus which passing by or on the other side of the road (in case they turn over to send us directly to alam barzakh)

rest in peace to all victims except for the reckless driver who caused this incident.
