Lately, i wanted to connect to another networked PC running Windows XP using vncviewer. However, when i try executing vncviewer 192.168.0.114, i will be presented with "VNC connection failed: No configured security type is supported by 3.3 viewer". FYI, I have RealVNC installed on my Windows PC. After going through the settings for VNC server, i try disabling the Encryption option and it worked out well as i was able to establish a connection between my Ubuntu PC and my Windows PC. Therefore, I presumed that vncviewer doesn't support the configured encryption although i have set RealVNC to use only version 3.3 protocol. So, how can i rectify this problem without turning off encryption?

I assumed you are trying to compile and install an application from source as the source are normally packaged in tarballs.
What you need to do is press ALT+F2 and type in x-terminal-emulator. Press <Enter>. You will presented with a terminal window. There's where you are going to type the commands. Type cd <the location where the files are extracted> and followed on by the subsequent instructions as listed in the extracted ReadMe file.

Type sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg at the command prompt/terminal followed by pressing <Enter>. After doing that, you will be presented with a blue screen which you could reconfigure your xorg.conf to use vesa mode. After selecting vesa mode at the first prompt, keep pressing <Enter> till the configuration process finishes. Then, you will be presented with the terminal again. Type sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start and press <Enter>. Gnome desktop manager will load and the login screen would appear. Type in your username and password and login as normal. Download the latest nvidia driver from here to your desktop.

Then do the following:
  1. Press ALT+F2 and type in x-terminal-emulator. Press <Enter>.
  2. Type the following one at a time and followed by pressing <Enter> after each.
    CODE
    sudo apt-get install build-essential

    CODE
    sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-dev

    CODE
    sudo gedit /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common
  3. After executing the last step, gedit will open and set DISABLED_MODULES="nv" if you haven't. Save the file after you've done.
  4. Reboot your pc.
  5. When you are being presented with the login screen, press CTRL+ALT+F1.
  6. At the terminal, type in sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop. Press <Enter>.
  7. Type cd <the location where you place the downloaded nvidia drivers> (e.g. cd /home/test/Desktop/). Press <Enter>.
  8. Then type in sudo sh ./<the nvidia driver file name>. Press <Enter>. Note that if you can't remember the file name precisely, you could always type the initial of the file name and press <Tab>.
  9. After doing that, nvidia installer will walk you through the installation process.
  10. When the installation finishes, you will be brought back to the terminal.
  11. Type in sudo shutdown -r now to restart the computer and hope that X would load this time.

You need to locate where that driver you download. Go to that dir and use that command.
