ehmmm.....
yup...what kons stated above is right....ubuntu not using the normal runlevel as other linux...
i had checked that in all runlevel 2 - 5 had S13gdm to start gdm while runlevel 0,1 and 6 had K01gdm to stop gdm!
inittab is also not needed...but after i copy the inittab...it is still used by the system...except that no matter what runlevel you set as default..the system still booting to GUI...in my case gnome...
as for my solution.. i had to ctrl-alt-F1 to go to console and stop the gdm manually, with sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop...
to think about it, it's so weird that ubuntu choose to ditch the normal default behaviour of runlevel....but after much thinking about it, it's all come to place...ubuntu want to be a Desktop Replacement OS of choice (replacing windows!!)...soo making sure all runlevel had GUI is the only way to say that IT want to be the Desktop OS!!!!
this is the thing that we have to err, compromise (for ubuntu that is)....emmm...maybe i just should delete the symbolic link in my prefer runlevel and stop whining about it....
thanks kons and all....
