Depends what series. For Pearl the cheapest can get around RM18++ which sucks big time. Tama I think is close to RM2k also sucks big time. A real Pearl and Tama starts at 3k.

There are 2 possible thing. Sometimes, it is the problem of the hi-hat itself. I had played on lousy hi-hats before, and it sucks. The sound produced is terrible, and you ain't going to develop feeling by playing those lousy hi-hats.

Try to adjust your hi-hat.. Make it "flexible", so that the sound of the hi-hat sounds crispier, and more treble.

Another thing, try to time the hit. It is not gonna happen in 1-2 days. Give some patience in trying to hit it correctly. Best method is to hit at a slow rate, like 60-70 BPS. That way, you can know how to hit it, and time the hit accurately.

Other than that, the left foot really need some real exercise and training. I have got no doubts in this. It also applies to the left hand as well. If your left hand could not move as fast as your right hand could do, you will have a real "big time" doing x16, or x32 rolls.

And the method to repair this weakness it to practice on para-diddles, and then single stroke ( 1/2 using the whole arm, 1/2 using the wrist, I called it up and downs). Means when you want to hit the hi-hat 8 times, your arm only move up and down 4 times only, and your wrist move 4 times, total = 8 times. Kinda hard to explain this here, but if you know what i mean, then that is great.

I had been to some live Christmas production (Live band). Lacking of records though. Do not have external bands for me to explore into this area.. Still looking at it though..

Yea, I will admit that I am indeed good in gospel music genre, as that is my background.
Well, my main line is still on "Rock" genre anyway.

Maybe you can invite me to one of your drumming session, and you be my sifu and I learn from you? Hahaha..
Maybe there are something that I had yet to explore and use it..

What I am looking forward for a breakthrough is:-
1.) How to make a even better roll, the fill-ins between verse and chorus and vice versa.. Yes, it is hitting something, but what to hit at the right occasion and according to the song. Hitting a x32 roll on a slow quiet notch song will definitely spoil everything.. Hahaha

2.) How to create a even better build up... *From a quiet bridge part -> High peaked chorus*.. What are the aspect in the build that is need to be focused to create a better drive..

3.) Some 1-2bars drum solos... Had a handful, but still need more eye openers in this.

4.) Styles of playing the mixture of tom-tom + snare... *Some sort of jungle beat* .. Also need eye opener in some even crazy style of hitting... Haha

These are the things I am looking to improve on..

can swap my snare with one of ur pork pie snares?

to answer your question, well, from my own perspective and taste...the fill ins between verses or parts of a song is, well, up to you...it is your's to fill in becoz it is you who is playing it..it is your own art and your own way of coloring the song =)

and for the question of making better rolls...well..all i can say is more practice...even im still trying to develop my left hand...i can say im lucky enough and thankful to God Himself for giving me the ability now to have control of ghost notes from developing my double stroke rolls..as some people get ghost notes from just letting the stick bounce on the drum head, while i actually control the amount of sof hits in the ghost notes using the same technique of a double stroke roll...and i'm getting the speed of my left hand to match my right hand...but still it is uneven...so in order to 'main tipu' to make it sound even, again i played with dynamics hehehe.....but i'm still in the process of improving my single stroke and double stroke to make it as even as possible =)

I played on Yamaha and DW sets.. But i don't like DW toms.. Yamaha toms sounds nicer.. Or maybe that tom i am playing just sucks? Hahaha..
But had to admit DW bass pedal is one if the best i had stomped on.. It is just smooth.. The rebound is not too harsh, but it is quick.. Optimum result.. Haha..
But pity my bass skin, i kick until it is dented in...
