QUOTE(Ken.shin- @ Nov 8 2010, 03:46 PM) hi guys, so basically i`m looking for a laptop for a friend who is a girl. well, there's the A42Ja with the i7-740qm which would help with all the rendering. Or you might wanna consider getting the sxps 16 that has a fullHD screen. More workspace will be easier to work. Or the XPS 15...currently, this http://www.sony.com.my/product/vpcea36fg has caught her attention. the retail price for this is rm3499. my question is what other models should i take a look at with this exact amount of budget? shes taking an animation course, so performing well in photoshop, illustrator, aftereffects, maya and etc is a must. gaming? not so. or more like, not for gaming. any help is much appreciated. Also got the Asus X42Jr which is cheaper, but still has an i7-740qm (2.8k around there) This post has been edited by DoubleU: Nov 8 2010, 04:07 PM |

the Acer is around 2.5k ringgit, and the Y460 is just under 3k ringgit (this is the i5-460m and GT425m version)
I'll recommend the acer, because it has a longer battery life, and its thin and light. Unless you really like the y460... because both performance are the same. Added on November 9, 2010, 2:35 pm@solarwing, if you need to use Dx11, get the CQ42-309AX. and the AMD processor will give you a better battery life. QUOTE(feizaiII @ Nov 9 2010, 02:39 PM) Thanks.. no, that's the Acer 3820TG that's available in singapore, not in malaysia. The Acer u mention izzit with this spec? i5-460M 13.3-inch display with a resolution of 1366×768 pixels, Switchable ATi Radeon HD 5650 graphics 2GB of DDR3 RAM 750GB of hard drive 6-cell battery Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) The one i'm talking about is the Acer 4820TG. Same specs, but 14.1" screen, and with a dvd drive (and 500 GB hdd? i'm not sure) Btw.... 750GB hdds aren't that common yet, where did you get this spec? The HD5650 has a much better performance.is this comparable with 4820tg? This post has been edited by DoubleU: Nov 9 2010, 02:54 PM |

the Dell XPS has better specs, and also, RM400-500 can upgrade to a fullHD screen.
Main difference is that the Asus comes with 2 years intl warranty default. Dell need pay abit more. (but dell onsite service rocks) If you want a more mobile laptop, and if you're gonna travel overseas for like study, might wanna consider A42Ja. |

QUOTE(yan5619 @ Nov 10 2010, 08:27 AM) Thank you. Asus laptops have very good quality, the dell XPS, better you go the Dell XPS tread ask them. What about quality? Is there any difference of product quality between these two brands? AFAIK I keep hearing Dell has heating issue? QUOTE(shaqie @ Nov 10 2010, 09:47 AM) with regards to Yan5619, I am also interested. However, i saw that dell can play 3d games? should i then upgrade to 8gb ram (extra RM400) unless you do alot of after effects, or photoshop, then No. 8 GB is overkill, that RM400 can get you a fullHD screen instead. (or a bluray player)QUOTE(ahmedinter @ Nov 10 2010, 03:47 PM) i wanna buy Dell XPS 15 Laptop RM 3,499 you can order on the www.dell.com.my website. (which part of johor? cause if you prefer to buy the laptop from a shop, danga city mall there should have some units... but those won't be able to customize)any comment about it? or may you recommend another laptop?? and can i buy it online?? note: i live in johor thanks in advance,,,,, |

QUOTE(skycrawler @ Nov 10 2010, 05:21 PM) depends, if you can't wait... then go lowyat. If not wait a few days for the laptop to arrive lur.QUOTE(tedisgodlike @ Nov 10 2010, 05:39 PM) The dell xps 15 better, since the 5650 in the EA36 is underclocked. But the processor (i5-560m) in the EA36 will be better for gaming (generally, like for fps or racing) since its higher clocked. |

The HD 5650 is equivalent (or slightly better on some benchmarks) than the GT435m. But sony underclocked their graphic card, so it generates less heat. So the 5650 card in the sony will be below the GT435m
However the processor in the Sony is the i5-560m, clocked at 2.66Ghz and max turbo boost to 3.2GHz. The i7-740qm in the XPS 15, is clocked at 1.73GHz and boost to 2.66Ghz, but it shuts down 2 cores. So you have 2 cores at 2.66Ghz, as compared to 2 cores at 3.2Ghz in the i5-560m. if i remember correctly, the i7-740qm will boost to 2.93Ghz, but will shut down 3 cores. So for games like Call of duty, Medal of honor. It will perform better on the i5-560m. But if it is an RTS and the game supports 4 cores, then the i7-740qm can perform better. For programs like AE and Photoshop, the i7-740 will also perform better. This post has been edited by DoubleU: Nov 10 2010, 06:13 PM |

upgrading the processor won't really help gaming performance, but its necessary if you want the GT435m. (dell forces you to upgrade it)

but for business its better to go with either the dell xps or acer 4820tg, the brushed metal palm rest looks more professional (i mean, if need to use in meeting and such xD) not to mention the battery life in the acer.
if you want a sportier look, but still quite decent, there's the lenovo y460... but that's my opinion... but that's the 3k limit, same as the XPS 14 also got the HP DM4, not as powerful, but the design is quite sleek. Just need check about heating issues.... |
