Newly married couple killed in car crash

GEORGE TOWN: A teenage couple, married in January this year, were killed in an accident at Km2.2 of the Penang Bridge here on Sunday.

Car accessories salesman Teh Boh Yi, 19, and shop assistant Khor Lee Mui, 17, died of head injuries while their three friends, who were travelling with them in the car, have been warded at Penang Hospital.

One of the friends, contract worker Lee Choo Hoe, 17, was thrown out of the car and landed in the sea. Marine police rescued him two hours later.

Police said Teh, the driver of the Nissan Livina, tried to switch lanes when he lost control of the car which hit the railings at 11.30pm.

The car then swerved to the middle of the road and a lorry loaded with vegetables rammed into it from behind, Penang Traffic Operations chief Deputy Supt Abdul Rahim bin Md. Din said.

Lee said he could not remember what happened. "I was unconscious when I was thrown out of the car and woke up to find myself in the sea. I managed to cling onto the bridge pylon underneath,” he said.

The other injured are Chiam Chee Wei, 17, and Teh Bee Bee, 20.

Chiam is in the intensive care unit while Bee Bee suffered a broken right leg.

Suami Isteri Maut Dalam Kemalangan Di Jambatan Pulau Pinang, Rakan Jatuh Ke Laut

- BERNAMA

"Police said Teh, the driver of the Nissan Livina, tried to switch lanes when he lost control of the car"

do u really believe what they say when the car damaged like that? how fast do u need to go to enable a car to "loose control" when "changing lanes", this is just absurd...............

there are so many possibilities, maybe the tire blew, maybe the lorry can't manage to brake in time and ram the car from behind when the car changing lanes at high speed, who really knows?

Lost control, hit the left side of the car.
Panicked, steer to the right (but oversteer), car spun to the center lane. Front & driver side got hit hard by following lorry (a 6-wheeler i guess).

The impact knocked the engine out of its mounting & a passenger into the sea.

Make sense?

What kind of "lost control"? If he already "lost control" of his car, how the heck did he change lane?

sad news. RIP to the deceased, both very young couple, with a 2 months old daughter. sad sad. next time, drive safe on the penang bridge.

i know why certain driver were forced to cut lanes. because certain "smart" people driving at 80Km/h refused to move to the left lane & hog the right lane no matter how you beam them. so when they got frustrated, they switch to the left lane, causing this kind of mishap.

please to all those who "terasa" you are people who drives slow but always sticking to the right lane, you are partly responsible for this kind of accidents.

Eh bro,The bridge there speed limit is 80kmph . its perfectly fine for right lane to go at 80kmph as they follow speed limit. You trying to incite us to get caught for speeding ?

hmm... Will it help if it had VSC/ESC and 4 wheel ABS/EBD (with rear disc brake)?

p/s: [off-topic] Nissan didn't bother to put VSC/ESC even in hi-spec Sylphy.

If you stay within speed limit @ 80km/h + press your brake during emergency, I doubt you can crash your car until the engine falls off.
Even if you LOST CONTROL.

So, I think the driver was running at very high speed + he did NOT press the brake.

Agree with you on this.....there are 3 friggin lanes on the bridge....leftmost is for slow moving vehicles and heavy vehicles.....middle lane is where u stay after overtaking....right lane is ONLY for overtaking....its the same anywhere in the world...after u overtake, be prudent and move back to the left lane......Unfortunately, it has become a trend to drive slowly on the right lane eventhough the middle lane is perfectly empty.

Who teach you drive at 'speed limit' on 3rd/right lane which is the Overtakign Lane and claim it's your right to do so? It's known as the overtaking lane for a reason, if another is going faster then you move to the middle lane. I cannot tahan those fella hogging the right lane at 80kmh when the whoel road is empty infront of them vmad.gif

Then because you were overtaking at 30-40kmph over the speed limit and cause an accident is ok la as long your overtaking? When kena saman for driving over speed limit at fast lane you tell police that you overtaking, See they take your reasoning or not

An extra 40kmph isnt going to make your travel time much faster especially in city driving condition and these 3 people paid with their lives for "faster" travelling

i am not advocating speeding. please go back to driving school. you obviously failed.

always give way to the faster car, especially when you are at the rightmost lane. kena saman is the one overtakings' problem...not for you to decide. the moment you hog the right lane, you are a road idiot. you played a part in aggravating people to cut thru the left lane. fullstop.

EDIT: I bold the part for those who have problem understanding. That's the traffic rule on dual lane (or more) roads. Just because you are above speed limit, doesn't mean you can stay there as long as you like. Give way. Don't understand, then google / dictionary it.

I'm sure we experience being on the right lane with car high-beaming you while the left/middle lane is full and there is absolutely no way to give way except to hog the right lane. Would you still say i am a road hogger in that situation?

Malaysian drivers in general need anger management and patience class. Its not our choice to hog the right lane if the other lanes are full with speed abiding driver

By the way,i dont think there is any law prohibiting lane hogging, Someone should advocate it to parliment. I have my fair share of lane hoggers

are you a penangite? A few penangites just told you, penang drivers like to hog the rightmost lane when the middle and left lane are empty. If you don't know the situation we face everyday on the bridge, please keep yr comment to yourself.

There is.

My driver 'kena' b4. He's driving a 'throttled' lorry (fuel pump was locked at an extent the smoke would pass Puspakom inspection).
Max the lorry can go is 75km/h.
When he wanted to overtake a fully loaded 10-wheeler, the fella driving the V10 Turbo wouldn't give way & press hard.

There's a patrol car not far behind, my driver was stopped and penalised for "Memandu perlahan di lorong kanan".

Note: The right lane is an overtaking lane. The center lane is for cruising. Many thought that by sticking to the max speed limit, they are free to stay on the right lane as long as they wish. And thanks to them, it's sometimes faster to drive on the left lane cos there's no traffic.

hmm... Will it help if it had VSC/ESC and 4 wheel ABS/EBD (with rear disc brake)?
p/s: [off-topic] Nissan didn't bother to put VSC/ESC even in hi-spec Sylphy.

nah , the driver lost control already

I'm sure we experience being on the right lane with car high-beaming you while the left/middle lane is full and there is absolutely no way to give way except to hog the right lane. Would you still say i am a road hogger in that situation?

Malaysian drivers in general need anger management and patience class. Its not our choice to hog the right lane if the other lanes are full with speed abiding driver

By the way,i dont think there is any law prohibiting lane hogging, Someone should advocate it to parliment. I have my fair share of lane hoggers

that happens alot .

no offence taken. i am a penangite but i do not drive like them. infact, i always try to hi beam them hoggers 1st, and overtaking from the left as my last option. being an experianced driver, we always check our left mirror for motorcyclist before changing lane. (even checking blindspots, because penangite motorcylist have a tendency to hide there)

sad to say but inexperianced driver will get agitated and then switch without looking. that's also very dangerous.

note: that's why i said, lane hoggers played a part in accidents like this. others might be wrong for driving recklessly, but if you are hogging the lane with your 81km/h that makes you plain brainless. to me, brainless is just as fatal as reckless. reckless drivers might be wrong for not doing/thinking right, but being brainless you are infact not thinking at all.

ya.. not all. but most of them. when i was in penang also experience very dangerous driving style..
there's one car simply come out from junction without stopping and give way to main road users.. its very close.. lucky not hit him.. and im not generalize, but notice lots of this kind of idiot driver in penang especially motorcycle.. thumbup.gif

the right lane hoggers above (in my example) dont care one.. after numerous hi beam and horn. they just can ignore. i notice they know that i want to overtake them coz can see they're looking at the mirror.. hmmmm
still cant understand why they can and still behave like that.

But they seem to give much more respect and leeway to you if your driving a really big car. Something like a naza ria instead of a small car.

Btw,i was at penang 2 months back for a business trip. First thing i saw after paying toll is a dead body on a junction doh.gif

Driving above speed limit is wrong. But road hogging is also wrong (and irritate others too). Just give way if the car following you is faster.

Pardon them on this.

The tempo in Penang is not as fast in KL. And perhaps the only road where one can drive fast on Penang Island is the coastal road stretch fr Macallum St to Queensbay Mall. Even then the speed limit is only 80km/h & 70km/h after The View.

Yes, the bikes & small roads on the island make it extra challenging. However, if u can master the skill of driving safely while maintaining efficiency, u're gonna be fine everywhere else. Drivers in Penang generally can park their cars really well. Not like in KL, where plenty of 'awek & makcik, lenglui & aunty' can't park a Kancil properly.

First of all,my condolences to the victims who passed on.

Back to lane hogging, yes I like to speed on the highway. Yes, I sometimes drive above the speed limit on the highway. But what happens if there is another faster car than me, behind me? I have to give way alright, no question, whether I'm going 130 or 140 or even 160 km/h. If he's faster than me, I'll give him way.

Let's not be selfish. I also hate it when people do not give me way. What gives me the right to do something back to other people when I myself hate it? Ask yourselves lane hoggers. You curse and cuss when people do not give you way, but when its your turn to give, you act BODOH only. Come on.

Well, my parents always told me on the road. No use being "kuai lan". It troubles your own self in the end.

There's another stretch where Penangites can drive fast. Its the long and wide stretch from Tanjung Bungah Hotel all the way to Sunrise Tower. Don't bother mentioning the ridiculous amount of traffic lights plaguing that particular stretch as red lights do not mean anything to those with an itchy right foot.

Motorcyclists in Penang are crazy. No helmets and doing zig-zags all the time at high speed. Some even casually talk to each other while HOGGING both lanes.

i am not advocating speeding. please go back to driving school. you obviously failed.

always give way to the faster car, especially when you are at the rightmost lane. kena saman is the one overtakings' problem...not for you to decide. the moment you hog the right lane, you are a road idiot. you played a part in aggravating people to cut thru the left lane. fullstop.

EDIT: I bold the part for those who have problem understanding. That's the traffic rule on dual lane (or more) roads. Just because you are above speed limit, doesn't mean you can stay there as long as you like. Give way. Don't understand, then google / dictionary it.
*
i agree the outer most lane on a multi-lane highway is for overtaking...
but it does not give you the right to drive over the speed limit...

i'm always on the left or center lane when i'm cruising on the highway...
i'll go out to outer most right lane to overtake... all the while within the speed limit...
bear in mind when i do this... i make sure the overtaking lane is clear of traffic...
i'll then return to the left lane when i'm done...

if some speeding idiot happens to catch up at my rear while i'm overtaking...
they should be slowing down to allow me to complete my overtaking...
they can then continue with their unlawful speeding when i return back to the left lane...

It's.....very obvious that the guy was speeding on the bridge. There's noway the car can be ripped apart like that if he was going 80. Chances are he was doing 120~140.....and it's doable on the bridge especially at night. The crosswinds on the bridge are not predictable. Sometimes, you can just get a gust of wind and this is exactly what will happen. What more, a Livina, chances are way higher.

About penangites hogging right lane, actually, not just penangites, there are alot of idiots like this everywhere. Driving at speed limit does not give you the farking rights to hog the right lane. Move over and let people who are faster overtake you. And please don't give a rat ass on why that guy is driving fast. That's his own damn problem if he wants to go above speed limit but don't farking hog the lane like you own it. I've seen accidents caused by idiots like these one time too many.

dont impose your views onto others unless you want to become a zealot.

Since when does other people driving over speed limit concerns you? whether or not people driving over speedlimit is within whos right, it definately doesnt fall into your hand to decide. I already said, if its speed summon you are talking about, let them deal with it.

I was talking about road hoggers in penang bridge, not overtaking issue like what you are saying. you have the right to give your comment which is right for the overtaking part, but as far as road hoggers on the bridge is concern, if you have never experianced it then you have absolutely no idea what me & others are talking about.

the situation (on the bridge) is not the same as everywhere else.

you got it all wrong...
why shouldn't it concern me when other drive over the speed limit???
i'm a road user too... and would like to feel safe when i'm on the road...
a speed demon who lost control of his car can cause an accident and take other motorist lives too...
that's why we have speed limits...

if you're in the middle of overtaking some buses, lorries, slower cars...
a speeding car closes in behind you...
in order to give way...
there must be a safe gap on the left lane for you to squeeze in to allow the speed demon to illegally speed through...
if there is none... the speed demon have to allow you to finish overtaking...

for road hogging... it's wrong for safety reason... same as speeding...
people road hog for various reasons...
i've asked around before...
some say others can do it... i also can...
some say it's their right... same reason speed demons give...
some say lazy to change lanes to overtake... let the other fella behind do all the work...
you'll be surprised all the lame excuses people can come up with...

as for the people who died on the penang bridge...
i don't think the crash of the mpv with the guard rail caused the worst damage and killed them... it was to the side of the car...
the impact of the lorry behind them that did the worst damage...

just my 2 cents... take it with a pinch of salt... as i take others too...

Situation should be like this. MPV lost control, crashed, followed by impact from lorry which normally love to stick closely behind any moving objects, couldn't stop in time, bang...!!!

It's just a lorry sending vegetables. Imagine bigger lorry, what will happen?

I agree with those who says if there is a faster car in the right lane behind you, you should GIVE WAY.

But, I also can empathise with you on this, cause some cars are really fast, and before you can finish overtaking, they are right behind you already. Therefore, I always slowdown and will not cucuk the car infront of me (although sometimes they are obviously lacking in power to overtake try as they might doh.gif). BUtpls.. if your car no power, and it's going uphill or whatever, dont lah slowly overtake and take 5 minutes to do it.... sweat.gif

then most important for penangist, pls drive the car accordingly to the speed limit.. normally too fast or too slow...

why can;t just obey the speed...

most of the case is those motherf^^^^r drive crazy slow, then cause car from behind try to cut....

FYI, there might be a reason Penangites road hog at right lane, the left lane occasionally full of nails doh.gif
Last time 2 lanes was worst, now got 3 lanes is better a bit.

I'll use mid lane now no matter how slow i'm driving, if u want to overtake me, use right lane or left lane.
If i'm driving in 2 lanes last time, i would probably hog the right lane too smile.gif

About the road hogging:
It is very subjective. For example, during traffic jam, is the right most lane has to be empty for "higher speed driver"? It is not, as the traffic is congested and all lanes are in full capacity, please be patient.

Like mentioned earlier, each driver may decide their own speed (fast/slow/beyond speed limit/turtle crawling style), give way to faster car if you are in the right most lane. And also, the car from behind will have no right to pressure the front driver to drive beyond speed limit (he has his right to drive safely), when there is no space in left lane, eg. as faster car pressure the car infront which is overtaking a slower car.

I don't think a 160km/h car will drive in middle lane and keep zig-zag to over take the cars in middle lane, and that car will stay in the right lane (road hogger)?

About the road accicdent:
I pity the passangers as they traveled with the driver. The driver was irresponsible to his friends as well as the bridge users. Imagine if it was another car/motorcycle (instead of lorry) bang the lavina, there would be another fatal case.
Learn to be responsible before driving on road.

About the speed limit on penang bridge:
Still feel that 80km/h on bridge is slow... and i also notice the 70km/h before the ramp (i feel very annoying)... need a super percise right foot control on accelerator... (and i drive either in middle lane or left most lane.. don't curse me of hogging the right lane tongue.gif )
Do you all notice the camera anyway (sign boards near entrance in both directions)?

During the Raya festive season, when I was travelling on the PLUS highway, one bloody white Forte drove as if he owned the road. Flashing high beam and HONKING all the way to tell people to give way, when everyone is travelling around 80-90km/h. Damn ego.

I honestly hope that this kind of driver can go meet whoever God he believes in ASAP.

from my own personal experience since the bridge opened, i have noticed the following...

before the bridge expansion...
it was 2 lanes to 3 lanes (middle span) to 2 lanes...
most motorcycles, buses & lorries will be on the left lane entering and exiting the bridge...
that's why you end up with cars hogging the right lane...
buses & lorries will sometimes hog the right lane too...
it seems they do this to avoid changing lanes whenever they need to overtake slower motorcyles, buses, lorries, cars...
when you hit the middle span, you'll notice the left lane seems to become a motorcycle lane...
very seldom you'll see slower buses, lorries, cars move to this lane...
some cars use this left lane as an overtaking lane...
why???
because it will change back to 2 lanes again...

now, after the bridge expansion...
not much have changed in terms of driving habit...
the most left lane is usually full of motorcycles...
slower buses, lorries, cars still drive in the middle lane...
there are still road hogs driving buses, lorries, cars on the right lane...

just my 2 cents...

During the Raya festive season, when I was travelling on the PLUS highway, one bloody white Forte drove as if he owned the road. Flashing high beam and HONKING all the way to tell people to give way, when everyone is travelling around 80-90km/h.  Damn ego.

I honestly hope that this kind of driver can go meet whoever God he believes in ASAP.

this kind of people don't believe in god...

they only believe in speed demon...

BUtpls.. if your car no power, and it's going uphill or whatever, dont lah slowly overtake and take 5 minutes to do it....  sweat.gif

this another thing. thanks to point it out. its true. experience it many time.
if you're going uphill and car no power, don't overtake laa..

speed limit is just the law in certain country.
if i was not mistaken, in germany there is no speed limit on the freeway/highway (instead advisable speed)

now should we still hog the fastest lane if you're in germany?

I realised, some people have their own set of "logic" that they follow and no set amount of arguing/convincing/proving will change their mind. That's why you have smart peopel and you have stupid people in this world. If they refuse to understand the idea behind road HOGGING the Right lane, then let them be.

It's not germany but... it IS illegal to road hog in Germany.. look it up before posting ignorantly..

Then again i'm sure you will still argue somehow propogating that road hogging is ok in your world... to each their own

Blocking the fast lane could cost Georgia drivers $75
By Walter C. Jones

Morris News Service

ATLANTA – Drivers who hog the fast lane and refuse to yield to faster vehicles could get a $75 fine under legislation introduced Tuesday.

The law already requires slowpokes to move over as soon as they notice they're being overtaken, but the sponsor of House Bill 1047 says a $75 fine would give officers more incentive to issue tickets.

"I don't think I'm alone in thinking this: There are so many times when you're on the Interstate ... and people will get in the over in the left-hand lane, which by law is for passing, and just sit there using it as their own personal driving lane," said sponsor Rep. Mark Butler, R-Carrollton. "They may be going 50 mph, and it ends up slowing down traffic. It's frustrating."

but you just said "why don't you post the speedlimit as well", which make it seems you are in line with people thinks "it's ok to road hog because i am following the speed limit", or worst, "i did it because i care and you should not speed".

i am not pointing at who that is, but they should know who they are. the point that i brought in earlier was, road hogging is a frustrating situation that leads people to get agitated & do reckless things, such as cutting into the left lane, most of the time without looking behind. that is reckless driving, and should be punished. but it's not just them who needs punishing, those road hoggers are also responsible and should be punished just like those laws in Japan & Germany.

i never advocate speeding, a point somehow certain smart people are too "thick" to see that. i just said, it's none of your damn business. and more important, i was totalling referring to the penang bridge, the place where this accident happened. on the bridge, speeding is almost a non issue on its own, because the road is almost always full of cars. how can you even speed?

we just want to drive "fast & smoothly", and not "you do 80 so i do 81 & together we make the whole road slow like mati". after a day of work is it too much to ask to get home early?

so why there are still accidents? well for one, hoggers makes people get frustrated, and frustrated people do stupid things like cutting lanes without looking. when they do that, cars behind would get shocked and sudden brake. BAM, accident happens. isn't that a familiar situation on the bridge? very.

and before the introduction of 3rd lane, it was almost always the poor motorist who become the unlucky ones...either knocked down or ran over.

Imagine u are going 130 on right lane
drive drive drive

then suddenly this aunty hogging the lane, driving at 110.

then she dont let you pass.

because frustrated. you turn to the left to overtake, and BANG

this is how accident happen.

how it happen?
1)the aunty hogging the lane

if you say cause the guy was speeding, wait, the guy already brake behind the aunty, so in reality, he wasnt speeding at all, the aunty stop him from speeding making him switch lane spontaneously and cause a crash.

Auntie driving at 110km/h, it's her right because that is the national speed limit. You driving at 130km/h, you were speeding -1. If you were speeding and am involved in an accident and die, nobody cares. If you are involved in an accident and take somene else with you, imagine the wrath your family members will have to face from their next of kin. If you don't die and the other party dies, you think you will be able to live with it?

the senarios above given by both you guys are wrong...

1st...
road hogging on the overtaking lane is an offence not matter at what speed...
you should not be in the right lane if you are not overtaking slower traffic on the left lane...
so, always keep to the left lane when not overtaking...

2nd...
even if you do hog the road (which is an offence) on the right lane...
when a faster car is approaching from behind...
it does not matter if the other car is speeding above the speed limit or not...
as long as it's faster than you...
you should return to the left lane within a reasonable time to allow it to overtake you...

3rd...
while you are overtaking on the right lane...
if you approach a slower car in front of you which is overtaking at a slower speed than you...
you need to slow down and allow the slower car to return to the left lane when it's done overtaking...

4th...
while you are overtaking on the right lane...
if you approach a slower car in front of you which is hogging the right lane...
you need to slow down and allow the slower car to return to the left lane within a resonable time...

5th...
you should only be overtaking cars on the right lane...
no matter at what speed you are driving...

6th...
driving above the speed limit in whatever lane is an offence...

if every road user follows the above...
more lives will be safed...
remember...
road hogging and speeding accidents are actually not accidents at all...
since they are all preventable incidents....

after reading all of the post above, one thing to conclude is that this kind of accident will happen and will neve stop no matter how hard or how hot the debate is, because it already becoming our culture to jeopardize our own and other's people safety the moment we enter the road.

wake up all of the people. it's our own attitude that keep letting this gruesome accident happening all this while. and it will continue to happen if we dont have a mindset of a first world.

yeah try to implement the law in malaysia same as georgia that is to fine road hog, and the next day you will see some ignorant politician keep yelling that the law is not fair for rakyat bla bla bla and at the end it will be ignore.

WE are killing OURSELVES. stop pointing fingers and start the change, practice defence driving and always remember safety first

i used to encounter this situation before

on a double lane, i was overtaking a lorry at 80kmh-90kmh
just after a safe distance in front of the lorry, i gave signal and want to return to the left lane, suddenly an impatient reckless idiot that followed me during the overtaking, accelerated and overtook me on the left. He didnt even giv me time to return to left lane. if i didnt use the side mirror during that time, i wouldnt want to imagine what will happen..
I think those impatient idiot has been trained to overtake on the left due to those right lane hogging cowboy

yes, pg bridge got terrible crosswind, for sedan wont be obviously, but can be feel by myvi already, this is livina. the wind can force you to change 1 lane. You need to hold really tight and not speeding.

This guy might dont have much experience driving pg bridge and just tekan all the way. been using this bridge for 4 yrs. cross wind is scary, but only once in a while.
