Usually the average hour for human to sleep is 8 hours.
But is it possible to train to just sleep 3 - 4 hours a day without causing side-effect???

I think the amount of sleep varies along with age.... Old people tend to sleep less... or they just couldn't sleep hmm.gif
I would say 6-7 hours daily is the minimum amount of time for resting (for adults)... too little sleep will render the brain rather.... "restless" (tried before, very steam) laugh.gif
3- 4 hours would be okay as long as its not for long-term... you may need to "re-sleep" back the hours lost to be able to prevent from being too exhausted nod.gif

during my previous reverse military training, we were forced to sleep for 3-4 hours a day yet we feel as alert as ever... due to constant pushing from instructors

Added on September 18, 2010, 2:33 pmas for my case, I think the main reason that I stay awake is because my body acknowledgethe danger if I were to feel sleepy or yawn and pump extra "uummpph"

P/S just my hunch since I`m not from bio or medic background tongue.gif

I've heard it's possible to train sleeping hours but don't think a person would want a constant pushing from instructor (e.g. water splash, loud noise, got beat up, etc...)
Guess your training has turn you into an alert person which is a good thing... thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

If I'm not mistaken, researches are still undergoing in finding out the actual cause for the change of sleeping pattern... Some say its natural as human ages, whereas others say that its caused by hormonal changes hmm.gif Or perhaps its because of all the worrying/stress experienced by elderly people which indirectly induces insomnia... rclxub.gif

Not expert on this and thought very little bout this.

But slping is main to regenerate and fix the died tissue isn't it?
I know many ppl wan to slp lesser since we can slp eternally after life,
but the main thing is if we slp lesser, even if we can feel awake or not so slpy, it is still insufficient to provide enough recover to our body, and thus cause many bad effect.

Child would need slp more than 8, i think because they have weaker body system.
Adult 6-7, more abit would be better.
While i think elder people need more instead.

Sleeping is to detoxify and rebuild cells from what I know, children need more because they are still growing and adult may require less just to maintain and older people sleep less but need afternoon nap because engine is old and less efficient.

I think it is more like they dont give you a chance to sleep not the danger. Any danger is just self imposeed. How long was your trainning? 2 weeks? ( I am navy reserve too). Forcing you to live a 30 hour day when there is only 24 hours, you will have to find back the lost hours. Taking naps during class is the most common way to get back this lost sleep.

its is possible naturally.. since we have bio clock within us..
our body and it shud be in our control...we have to train it continuously no matter wat then shud be okay

Agreed. There's a reason why we need to sleep.
I went for a 9days St. John training camp, maximum only get 3hours sleep per day. No luck on sleeping on classes coz everyday have to run around solving puzzles and collecting stamps, building bamboo towers and doing many other stuffs. Oh and if the trainers caught you dozing, then it's whole group pumping 20 times or running laps around the field. On the ninth day, I found out what it really meant by microsleep. I can talk or listened to some conversations, blackout for 1 or 2 seconds, and then continue talking without realizing I've actually stopped talking.

By side effects it would depends if you are talking about the long term or the short one. Short one is quite obvious, it will be that you will feel sleepy and find it difficult to concentrate. Long one would be the damage done to your body. Some may argue that they survived fine with a mere 3-4 hours sleep only. That also depends on the activity you have carried out during the day. First day of heavy work and 4 hours sleep might be enough for you to wake up refreshed tomorrow due to your own mental motivation. However, after the second day with the same amount of work and the same amount of sleeping time, you will find yourself harder to wake up on the third day. Constantly pushing your body to its limit will undoubtedly do some good amount of damage to yourself.

Watched this movie.. Nightmare on ElmsStreet...

there`s this part where they mentioned "micronap"
a state whereby human has stay awake excessively and the body will shut down temporarily while your eye are open and you are awake....

Meaning to say.. you are sleeping and you dont even know about it...

I tried to google but no match... anyone heard of this?

is it from valid medical terms? or just fictional medical terms?

I had a friend who slept maximum 3 hours a night for years, chain smoker and drinks like a fish. Last time I saw her, she was in her very early 20s but look like over 30.

Ever heard of this phrase : Death is but a dreamless sleep

anyway, i chose 7hrs cos that's my average, i think sleep is pleasure and something which needs to be done just like eating etc. it is something where we need to choose the right balance to do.

microsleep, I believe I've experienced that a few times. In lectures tongue.gif haha. High probability of it happening if I sleep for 3-4 hours for 3+ consecutive nights. I would just look at the lecturer and everything would seem fine, the next thing I know, I'm opening my eyes haha I actually don't realize it at all and yes it is not easy trying to stop yourself from doing it. It'll just happen again without you knowing it

so late night drivers, make sure you have enough sleep. You don't wanna open your eyes to glass shatters

agree2, sleep less you'll get a headache. sleep longer you'll also get a headache. i tried when i was having my exams, duration of it was like 2 weeks. everyday slept for about 2~4 hours. in the end when i was gonna sit for my last paper my eyes was so red. blink.gif

last time during kindergarten i still remember i slept i think more than 10 hours per day, then primary n secondary 8 hours per day. now college 6 hours per day. working ? lesser i guess? tongue.gif

I need roughly 8 hours 30 mins or i will feel very tired..
I can bear a day with 8 hours but anything below that will cause me yawning whole day.

Sleep is actually vital for human survival. The exact mechanism or reason behind needing sleep is unknown but one of the more prominent theory is that sleep 'resets' the imbalance in neurotransmitter levels built up in the brain due daily activities.

In fact, there are very rare cases of people with lesions in their thalamus causing them to lose their sleep drive and therefore, irrevocably deprive them of their ability to fall asleep. This condition is known as familial fatal insomnia and is invariably fatal. Death usually occurs within 1-2 years and is preceeded by absolutely horrific symptoms, beginning with insomnia, fatigue, hallucinations, rapid weight loss, severe dementia, depressed consciousness and before finally falling asleep forever.
