I'm going to UK to study this next week and I'm planning to work part time there. There is one question that I want to ask. Is there any law stating that the minimum wage per hour one can earn while working part time?
*
From October 2010, National Minimum Wage rates will increase from:
£5.80 to £5.93 an hour for workers aged 21 and over
£4.83 to £4.92 an hour for workers aged 18 to 20
£3.57 to £3.64 an hour for workers aged 16 to 17
The rise is around the two per cent mark in each category. As promised, the government has extended the adult minimum wage rate to 21-year-olds from October 2010. Previously the qualifying age for the National Minimum Wage was 22.

LOL your final statement explains it all. Was kinda scratching my head how you managed to pull it off.

But anyhow, still a great story. I share with you an almost-similar story. After you've managed to achieve all these, don't you sometimes have regrets? Regret knowing that you could have done so much better and enter a top 10 instead of just being mediocre. Same feeling I have man. nod.gif  Time to work hard in Year 2 and 3 to make a comeback and at least get into the last ranks of "top", and not remain stuck at mediocre. Luckily first year doesn't count into the CGPA.

I was quite fortunate actually I can handle my stress level. One of my friends fainted in the examination hall. rclxub.gif Yeah, sometimes you just sit down and tell yourself: damn, if only I did the studies back then..

Guys, I just collected my visa just now at Wisma MCA.

The best advise I can give to you all is

use original FD and all results in original transcript , they will keep it properly for you, nothing will left out so don't worry.

if u hand in original FD , then u save so much of troubles of getting bank letter etc and worrying it might get rejected cos u are not giving the original FD.

Canopies, when did u submit in ur visa application? i want an indicator as to how long it takes for them to process it. peace of mind =)

On a separate note, does the ISIC card give us extra baggage allowance on ALL airline companies ie. MAS? I do know that for MAS, we can apply for the student GRAD card but if the ISIC card gives the same benefits, then it's worth it to apply for the ISIC card instead.

they didn't mention that you need to hand in the actual passbook. and don't worry about the fd cert thingy. he only said that if you don't have bank letter. if you have bank letter, it's enough to prove your financial backing.

This is the first time that I'm going to UK. I have a few question about the custom check. What will they check? Medic report? Laptop content? What documents will they ask for?

Just give them your passport and your immigration form which I assume you would filled it in when you're still on the plane. Then, they'll ask you some random question like purpose of visit, where would you stay, how long is your course of study, what are you studying and etc. If you're a prudent student, there's nothing to be afraid of. Just don't look suspicious.

I was told laptop is not considered part of luggage weight allowance. If they complained your backpack is too heavy, just take out the laptop + accessories like charger.

Hello guys, just thought of sharing this information from what I heard at my Uni's pre departure briefing. According to one senior who took emirates and stopped by at Dubai, he said most of the people there was prompted for health check.

So point to note, if u're transitting at Dubai, just have ur medical reports n x ray ready just in case smile.gif

Usually you can take one hand luggage + one laptop. Be sensible and don't carry those laptop bags that are really big. You shouldn't be taking a backpack and a hand luggage.

Not sure about the camera bag though but it never hurts to call them up and ask.

There are some who would try and take two or big hand luggage on board and sometimes you can get away with it. However given you are likely to be flying during the student flying season, I would suggest you stick to the rules.
