yorkshire is a district (county), and not a town/city.....it's the biggest county in england, and the equivalent is like the state of perak.....

the main cities are leeds and sheffield, with many other smaller cities and towns.....

therefore cost of living will vary from place to place, so it is impossible to quantitate these costs based on the term 'yorkshire'....however, generally, that region has a lower cost than london or the southeast........

Even so I find 20 -40 quid to be too low for normal decent student accommodation that's not too far from university. I suspect you are probably living in some out of the way housing or paid part of the rent in other form like cleaning the kitchen or sharing room with others or you found a fairy god mother as landlord. I think you should state why yours is so cheap because you may give others the impression that's the expected rent cost. And imagine someone using your rent cost as estimate and budget as such and when it does, it can spell trouble and when that does happen, you are doing other a disservice. My 2 sen.

leeds does have the distinction as the city with the lowest student cost....

i suppose if it is 5 years ago, and it's like 'keeping company' for the owner, it might be 40 quid a week....

More or less.... I would rate Leeds almost equivalent as penang.... though not much tall building... but the shopping, infrastructure, nightlife wont lose much if compared to London.....

You could start with Imperial, Cambridge...

Way to break it down to the best six...

Since you have 5 choices I assume there shouldn't be restrictions... which means you should consider Cambridge or Imperial if you really want the top.

Why are you even looking at Bath or Sheffield?

That list isn't quite what people call "top" but my five here would be:

Cambridge (pretty sure they have Mechanical Engineering, and that it is awesome there)
Imperial
Bristol
Edinburgh
Southampton

Other schools have Engineering too (UCL, Warwick), might want to check those out.

seriously disagree.
I'm in Mech Eng myself and Bath is regularly considered among the top 3.

And Imperial as a choice is very debatable. It probably only appeals to most Asian students but outside of that circle it does not have that high a reputation. The British consider Durham the Oxbridge alternative instead of Imperial which to them is just an "outsider". And UCL for engineering is almost like Kings (which closed their Eng Dept in 2009)
