QUOTE(podrunner @ Sep 8 2012, 08:04 AM) Seriously? Using i phone without roaming. Rely on wifi only.Would you by any chance be using a blackberry phone? The plan is to get a pay-as-you- go sim only, for now. Browsing through the various telco websites,, it seems PAYG sim only for blackberry is uncommon, only T-mobile and Voda offering. |

On hindsight, rice cookers are cheaper over here and save the hassle of carrying over. Same applies to hair dryer and other personal electrical items.
As for food costs, noted that those who occasionally cook can manage their finances better. Eating outside on fast food or Chinese takeaway will cost between 5 to 7 pounds per meal. |

QUOTE(molly_X @ Sep 10 2012, 04:21 AM) mind share which area are you at? Relative is in Glasgow and purchase one for travel use from Sen Q for about RM100. We bought a spare one from Argos for less than 4 pounds during students promotion.did u purchase the normal small hairdryer or the high pressure ones? what's the best price you got? Chinese provisions and herbs are also manageable though maggi mee cost RM2 per packet whilst Brands Essence is about RM85 for 6 bottles. |

QUOTE(eliselam @ Sep 10 2012, 09:30 AM) I am leaving for UK tonight as orientation starts this week and registration starts next week. I just want to thank you esp podrunner, cckkpr and limeuu for the advices given. Have a good trip and wish you well in your studies.I shall miss Malaysia but is a new chapter for me and I really look forward to it. Bye! Added on September 10, 2012, 3:28 pm QUOTE(limeuu @ Sep 10 2012, 11:14 AM) good luck, and have a good time.... 1.0l cooker purchased in bolehland, the one I saw was 1.5l.Added on September 10, 2012, 11:17 am some electrical products are actually cheaper then in msia.... so you managed to get a small rice cooker?....i only see 1.8l ones in uk.... yes, cooking can reduce expenses....a relative spend only 10 quid a week from the supermarket for food..... Like what you say, a sale is a REAL sale. It's very true that cooking helps a lot. There are super daily offers at tesco and iceland prices can be lower than tesco. And I must say I am impressed when I forgot to take my shopping bag at Argos and went back there an hour later and found it safely stored by security. For info, Lloyd's bank seems the most popular for int students, esp in Glasgow. Yeah, agreed that bank draft is the most convenient.

QUOTE(M@Y @ Sep 16 2012, 07:06 AM) Hello there! I was looking at the cute compact hair dryer at Argos here at Newcastle. Its 3.99pounds. How's the power? So regret for not bringing one from home with me. Saw another hair dryers with the brands like Revlon, etc costing 15pounds above! The Argos hair dryer works fine. There's also a 1.5l rice cooker costing less than RM60 which can also be used to steam certain dishes compared to the 1 liter. Get hold of the catalogue for reference.Speaking of the rice cooker, there's many Made-in-China brands, but those are 1.8l big and costs 26pounds and above. I just want a small one, enough for one person. No more Been cooking with frens who brought his rice cooker and we share lots of equipments while waiting for our flatmates to arrive. I must say, cooking really save a lot of money! Even those cheapo-student-meal-deals cannot compare. So oily! And i realized those shampoos and shower cream are made in France, Italy, etc instead of our usual made in Thai. Buy at places that most students buy and you can't go wrong very far. |

Bought some muffins from poundland but tasted bad. No hassle, show receipt and immediate replacement. Most of the grocery outlets are almost the same and the bargains are dependent on what you want for that day. Noted that Iceland was generally cheaper.I like sandwiches from sainsbury though.
If you are shopping for promotional items, be it food, clothes or even footwear, don't hesitate and come back later. It will be gone! Relative was looking for a handbag and came back half an hour later and saw a lady carrying all four in her hand. |

QUOTE(theng168 @ Jan 11 2013, 12:01 AM) Hi all, asking on behalf of a friend of mine. She's taking master degree at Coventry Uni London Campus, is there any near-by or recommended room for rent? Doesn't the uni provide recommended place to stay? Suggest to stay there for a semester and then decide whether to shift or not thereafter.Your input is much appreciate. Thanks in advance. |

QUOTE(theng168 @ Jan 11 2013, 08:32 AM) erm... right. will tell her so then. 'coz i not sure if the rental is much more exp if stay in-campus or not. It could be more expensive. Taking into consideration the facilities, cleaning, maintenance and security is worth it. May elect twin sharing to soften financial burden. Thanks for your feedback |

QUOTE(hrevijay @ Jul 15 2013, 02:29 PM) I'm not sure why many ppl say clothes are cheaper here in the UK. Tbh, it's not. Winter clothing, sure, but don't forget winter's only 3 mths of the year. Normal day to day wear in Malaysia is certainly cheaper, unless you don't substandard apparel from places like primark or mataland. Take a look at debenhams site, you'll get the picture. Primark shopping is acceptable. Debenhams is not the place to shop for Asian; that is why its outlet in KL close down. Clothes are definitely cheaper in UK, depending on when you buy and food is also cheaper depending on how you spend. But my most important advice....learn to cook. otherwise you're dead my friend. The thing that is expensive is the fees. |
