There is no indication of user interface changes, although there is a picture of an all-in-one PC.
It looks the same hmm.gif

Not exactly too soon, Microsoft used to release their OS in much smaller gaps, remember Windows 3.11, 95, 98, 2000, Me... all in about 2 - 3 years gap... It's only the gap between XP and Vista that is huge... 2009 - 2010 is about 3 years also.

Still early to tell, but from what I know is that the developers are asked to think like Apple tongue.gif

Well, you can install 3rd party softwares that allow you to do so on Windows 7 as well... But these facial recognition softwares are bad at recognising people with darker skin like we asians have, even worse on the blacks... Check this out,lol

There's no Windows Mobile 7 anymore. It's now known as Windows Phone 7 and it's scheduled to be released this end year holiday season.

I don't think it's too soon. Windows 7 was released last year, so it's already 1 year of their release date. If Windows 8 will be released in 2012, it's 3 years interval and it's not abnormal in Microsoft's production cycle. Maybe Windows 7 is not so familiar in Malaysia, but in United States it's available everywhere.

And where you get that information if I may ask? Please, stop spreading rumors. It's not even ready for beta testing yet. Plus, I don't know if you're outdated, but Bill Gates ain't part of Microsoft anymore.

Lol, don't count your eggs before they hatch. In your case you haven't had the eggs yet. tongue.gif Windows 8 is in development, yes, but the so-called "features" are the early roadmap that Microsoft aims to add among other features. You can't be serious and take it as such that that is all to Windows 8's new features. Windows 8 release in 2012 seems feasible. Windows 7 is doing great and will continue to do so well into 2012.

It is Windows 8. If you go and read about the leaked roadmap of the next Windows, you'll see that they mention it as "Windows 8", just like Windows 7 codename was, "Windows 7".

my bet is that w8 be 64 bit only.

XP to vista took so long because its a leap of faith M$ taken to "improve" the monotonous looks of windows and security features (the effingly annoying UAC).

vista also introduces kernel patch protection which is the reason why so many AV and firewalls breaks on grounds of "compatibility". this hardened kernels, M$ hopes, will improve security.

m$ learns from the mistakes and brought to us w7, which is a great product, i must admit. and i certainly hope w8 will be even better.

If only windows could update their OSes like steam did with their games. Rather than releasing a new one every year. Wouldn't it be better if they release a major update every once in a while?

Its obvious enough that these people at Microsoft are in it for money and not for the development and revolution of OS.

Have you tried Windows Update? It's equivalent of that updates for games. Just because Windows didn't get updated like games, having minor revision, doesn't mean it's not updated. Since when Microsoft release a new one every year? It's following their 3 years cycle. If it's not for development, right now you're still stuck with Windows Vista, no DirectX 11 etc eh? Not only Microsoft, all software giants, are in it for money including Apple and Adobe.

i think the impact of Windows 8 will not be significant enough to generate enough hype as windows 7. Since Vista actually attracts all the attention and Windows 7 "fixes" the complaints on Vista to generate enough trusts and sales, most people will already be satisfied with Windows 7.

With 3 year cycle updates, only a handful of people will buy Windows 8 or new PC buyers will get it. Existing Windows 7 owners might not waste the money if it's not some major breakthrough product.

It'll probably be like Windows 98se or Windows ME for Windows 98.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm particularly interested about booting Windows (almost) instantly, which, up till now, is not do-able. Full migration to 64-bit and component-based install are both interesting to follow.

Why need to be confused? You don't have to upgrade to Windows 8 if you're just upgraded to Windows 7, there's no need for that.

And seems alot of people will not let go windows 7 by that time, just like people won't let go xp.

Errrr... Why would you compare with such ancient monolithic design? Total change? Are you sure you want that? Have you used Windows XP when it was launched around 2001? Peoples moaned, when their softwares and hardwares would not work at all in the newly and (almost) totally changed Windows XP. Are you sure you want that? hmm.gif

I think that is almost DO-ABLE and at the same time NOT-DOABLE.

DO-ABLE is the sense if you spend RM3xx on an SSD, it's almost happening. Not DO-ABLE, is due to BIOS boot up is still pretty slow especially if you enable SATA mode(AHCI) or RAID...even before going into O/S, maybe 10 seconds gone liao, so even with SSD, time lost on BIOS boot up is unavoidable. It takes a combination of SSD and a faster BIOS bootup in order to have a PC boot up under 3 seconds me thinks. I thought there were talks of moving the PC BIOS to EFI like Macintosh....still nothing yet??

Hmm... I was using Windows 2000 for my work last time.
It was stable.

But it's lack of interface candies made me install tonnes of stuff which got me walking into the Computer department for my quarterly re-image. tongue.gif

That is, until they got fedup and installed windows XP for me in the end.

So, Microsoft was right to put some eye candies into their interface so users won't have to spoil the OS, too much... tongue.gif

it's not our decision to decide whether to change or not.. when microsoft says upgrade to win8 they we must upgrade lo, they will drop the support for win7..

I highly doubt that...if he did so the employee can sue him for intentional damages done to his/her property, and you can't control what your staff wants to buy or use? I wouldn't think a CEO of any kind of company would do that, let alone Steve Balmer.

Microsoft have to admit the fact that Apple have been making gains in the past few years.

Windows 7 works fine with me.

I guess Steve Balmer is not in a good mood when he throw the iphone? He lost half of his bonus because the delay in launching the new Windows Mobile phone. biggrin.gif

Since (if) it's a company policy, then there's nothing can those employees do. It's the same as dress code policy. Or web browsing restriction policy. Admitting facts doesn't mean they can (or will) allow employees uses competitor products.

instead of just revising existent product to become new product.
I would prefer MS to start a new OS project from scratch - yes, a revolution rather than an evolution
this is needed for computer hardwares to be fully utilized.
I am sure a lot people will complain compatibility issues, but sacrifice is needed for better efficiency
what do you guys think ?

New OS from scratch is not an option as that would take too much times and while in process, all other OSes will advances with new features and such. Even MacOSX and Linux doesn't get total rewrite as it's time consuming, money costing and not productive.

BTW, what does not get fully utilized in Windows 7? Can you name a few?

I should use not fully optimized instead of fully utilized, sorry for the wrong word used here
for example:
the battery life in windows is not efficient compared to other advanced OS such as OSX leopard on the same machine
on the same machine OSX has much longer battery life
source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2785/the-new...sta-sata-issues

furthermore, windows has some redundant services running behind that consume CPU resources, which slow down and shorten the battery life nod.gif

well you can see, windows phone 7 is just an example of revolution

well i heard alot about windows 7 regarding power handling improvement , but in real world test... it makes negligible differences
athough you say it is so 2006
windows 7 does not really improve the power handling.
source: http://www.pcworld.com/article/172509-2/wi...ance_tests.html

well I just said that sentence because the former forumer thought re-designing architecture of OS will need new hardware architecture/organization as well...

for me and my personal beliefs. the good windows version is

(upgrade from 98)
Windows 98se (best version. beats the hell out of ME and 2000)

(upgrade from 2000)
Windows XP (didnt use it until 2002, shockingly satisfying, i dont even want to change at first lol)

(upgrade from Vista)
Windows 7 (tried vista on a friends pc and readin review.. it sucks.. until 7 comes i installed it right away)

~looks up~ rolleyes.gif
im pretty sure i will hold up for a while if Windows 8 hav surfaced..

I don't dig the hype, i dig the reviews.

cheers~ wink.gif

I hope that Microsoft would make their OS greener. I have have to use laptops and i always find myself low in battery when using the Windows 7.

My Acer laptop can survive for about 1.25 hour, but it could only survive for about 45 minutes on the Windows 7.

You don't have to upgrade if you don't want to. No one, including Microsoft is forcing you to upgrade anyway, plus Windows 8 release date fits just fine in Microsoft OS release cycle.

So does the hardwares. If they didn't release new version soon, they're gonna end up adding bloats to existing Windows 7 codebase instead of creating something new for the hardwares.

I don't think so. They're making it a cloud-based OS, and the new interface for 64-bit version is only for HIGH-END computers. The new UI is codenamed "Wind" in case if you did not know.

List of Changes:
- Cloud-based OS, in order to fight piracy, and you'll have to connect to the internet if you want to use it.
- New UI for 64-bit version, codenamed "Wind". This is the biggest change, this UI is using about 170MB of your memory and it's designed for high-end computers. It will be fully 3D UI.

Micro$oft CEO, $teve Baller, stated that Window$ 8 is their most ri$ky product. It is ri$ky indeed.

They're just a rumor but there's one identical proof, the new Nvidia Quadro 265 driver. Take a look at this:
CODE

; NVIDIA Windows Vista / 7 / 8 (64 bit) Display INF file
DiskID1 = “NVIDIA Windows Vista / 7 / 8 (64 bit) Driver Library Installation Disk 1″
NVIDIA_WIN8 = “NVIDIA”

The driver refers to a new version of Window$ kernel, which 6.2 and the code above includes the references to Window$ 8.

Every company does everything, of course for the money, but they also brings innovations to the table. Take a look at recent Kinect device. Wasn't it revolutionary? Now peoples are using it, although not as what it was intended, to create other amazing things.

Then again, good hardwares won't functions at its best if not coupled with good OS that can fully maximize the use of the hardwares. Let say if you use Linux on your mega hardwares, will it pull out the full potentials of your hardwares? No right? So definitely Windows deserved to get installed on your system, and for that, you should pay for it.

But then again, there's no point talking these to you since you're one rigid pirater.

Yeah, since you're not into computing that much, rearm may do the trick nicely. But for me, as I do use computers all the time, reformatting every 9 months is not an option.

I really hope that MS can produce a windows which is lighter and greener for netbooks and laptop usage.

If it keeps on rolling out the OS which is energy consuming,I might want to try out the Chrome OS netbooks.

if microsoft is gonna offer us with current storage technology plus cloud computing at the same time, it's gonna be a big plus point for them.

Sooner or later all games will be ported to consoles, even in RTS genre, and PCs will gonna be an iMac like at that time.

but cloud is not gonna be a popular among most of us hoarders. Keeping TBs of movies and games, plus broadband tech per price is quite left behind compared to other countries, well, cloud is still far from us here.

Well i do not need to read the rumors also know that. Otherwise, booting a computer without any files in the hard disk?

Non sense. I just hope that Microsoft would think carefully which feature should remain within the cloud services.

Chrome OS, I might try it out later when it hit Malaysian market for sometime.

Well , wrong laugh.gif

Chrome OS is google developed OS but google's OS is goobuntu . Chrome OS parents are Chromium OS - a project which is fully open source . Chrome just use the source code , add a few trademarking things and own logo - Done

About goobuntu - used internally by google it self and never got leaked or available for download .

The fact that Google made Chrome OS doesn't change at all. And you're wrong, Chromium IS developed by Google. Chrome OS is based on Chromium but Chrome OS is the closed source version of Chrome OS and will be only used on certain systems from Google's manufacturing partners.

And Goobuntu, I won't say leaked, but Google will never release it to the public, but they made Chrome OS instead. Unless there are some people working for Google to get the OS leaked.

At the end of the day, tweak your OS properly would help to boost the startup time.

You must know that Alpha, Prebeta, Beta, RC are all unfinished softwares. Even though, for example Windows 7 allow you to use for up to one year, it's not finished, contain bugs and security holes. I'd rather use the limited 30-days final version for evaluation instead of using any unfinished RC as Microsoft no longer provide updates after the period is up.

Google Chrome OS is nowhere near Windows. Cloud-based system with few "apps" available. For anyone who are just surfing the Internet, opening and editing basic documents etc maybe can live fine with it, but for a full-blown computer experience, even Linux is way better.

For me, I am good with the RC. Beta version is still have a lot to improve. RC version is quite stable for me to use.

I always use stable OS to do my business rather than using the RC.

For now, Chrome is not released to the market yet. I am waiting to see how it performs, but i doubt i would change to it within 3 years time.

Stable or not that's another thing to consider. How would you respond if your personal desktop/laptop get infected with viruses which (let say) steal all your personal/banking information, who you'd blame? You can't blame Microsoft. RC serve its purpose as candidate for the final release, and does not deserve to be on your computers more than when its intended to.

I'm not buying the Chrome OS fud, it just won't work for me anyway.

I never blame Microsoft when my PC is infected with the virus, even in my Windows 7 HP.

For me, new OS won't get infect easily as there are new security features in it. Therefore, that is not my concern.

My friend install the Windows 7 Beta and we have to restart the game half way because he have to roll back to Vista as it is too unstable to play Dota on the Windows 7 Beta.

LOL.

new security feature= hacker need time to crack it.

Beta/RC= not finished? Nvm, as i told you i did not do my business on the "white mouse" OS.
*
Sure, each security measures made up will be cracked, it's just a matter of time. But which would you choose, RC with longer period of evaluation but with security holes that WON'T be patched, or RTM with shorter (but still expandable) period of evaluation but with security holes fixed along the way?

QUOTE(Quantum_thinking @ Jan 14 2011, 09:47 PM)
LOL.
Just wanna try out like whether it is suitable for me or not. cool.gif

If you would want to try, take the final version, much more completed, most bugs ironed out, if not, you can still use Windows Update. If 30 days is not enough, there's always the rearm trick to extend the evaluation up to three times, 30 days each.

Indeed. RC is long enough for the hackers to crack it, but i still can update the Windows 7 RC when using it. hmm.gif

Indeed, there are some minor minor bugs in the RC, but i am ok with it because i still can use most of the function smoothly.

You tested 3 times for the evaluation with the same email address?

That updates are only specific to RC. All other updates released after the RC expired does not apply to RC, so you will still vulnerable to not yet (found and) fixed vulnerability.

Minor? There's quite some major bugs in RC, one of them being able to get admin privileges on standard account. Softwares as big as an operating system like Windows which is target for hackers will need updating. If you continue to use non-updateable RC version, of course hackers can take control of your system easily than one using final up-to-date version of Windows 7.

Email address is only required for profiling with Microsoft, it doesn't have anything to do with usage of Windows 7 evaluation. Plus I'm not using the Windows 7 Enterprise 90-days evaluation, I just take the ISO from my TechNet subscription and install as usual.

Last time i use the RC till Dec 09. After that i did not use it once it is being restricted usage.

I always use admin account, i did not notice the bug you mention. At the end of the day, I am just taking a look at the latest OS offered by the Microsoft without the intention of bashing it. icon_rolleyes.gif

That bug works with standard (limited) user accounts, giving them privileges like an admin. Eh no man, this just for the sake of sharing information and discussing things, no harm intended icon_rolleyes.gif

An UX concept as seen here. It is intuitive and fresh, but take note that all these will requires the main component to be rebuild from scratch using WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) and too bad this kind of interface will consume lots of RAM and graphic processing power, which will left out those users with system 2 or 3 years ago behind. Concept is a concept, and rarely gets into the real thing, unless it's really good and the team can make it. Just look at those Longhorn concepts, it's all interesting (and fresh at that time) but in the end, it's all scrapped because of lack of times (due to development reset) and problem integrating it to the OS core.

I see.

Usually all the dream or proposals are very nice and fits the requirement that is being set.

I hope that Windows 8 could be more greener that could enable me to use it in the laptop for a longer time. smile.gif

By the way, Microsoft make the Windows 8 compatible with the ARM processors?

Still, transition from Vista to 7 is not that much, but from XP to 7 is. And judging from early Windows 8 build shown at CES, there won't be that much of a transition between 7 to 8. And also yes, Windows 8 would be compatible for ARM processors.

just indirect comparison,i switch XP to vista and i feel very damn lag, then back to XP..
Transition/effect like much in Vista(they got Dreamscene but wonder why windows get rid of it when on Win 7)..

As for now, Windows 7 based tablet still need to run on x86 processor, which is power consuming, and not efficient, not to mentioned the default UI is not finger friendly. You can actually see the benefits having Windows running on ARM devices: more broader market = more control = more income for them.

I think win8 doesnt really contribute much.

MS tries to make win7 multi platformable but got their arse kicked by android and apple due to their applications dominating the cellphone and tablet market. They are already alot steps behind. Noticing that , MS yet tries to launch win8 and hoping that with a new look, they could probably dominate everything on the market including cellphones, tablets, gaming console,pc/laptops.

The company is just greedy enough to steer every of their competitor off the digital world. But unfortunately, they are behind time.

Windows 8 is expected to arrive somewhere late 2011 or early 2012. These are some new features you can expect:

• 3D support for movies and games (format still unknown).
• Microsoft own web apps store (to attract web developer who develop smartphone apps to “rock windows”).
• Better multimedia playback and recording (balance- using hardware acceleration to save battery or using CPU for better result).
• Task manager (link to action centre) – clear notification on which app using the most bandwith / app causing performance problem.
• Management tool app- to adjust or remove the cause of the problem.
• Superboot - to remove malware & rootkits (combine ‘safe mode + last known good option’).

Hope more features are added and are better than competitors.. after they’ fine-tuned’ windows 8.. thumbup.gif

Sure, with Windows 8, they'll extend their Windows dominance onto tablet and mobile devices running the ARM processors.

Why do you say there isn't much changes in XP to Vista? GUI has been changed, and many other new features. I do like vista's feature, just of the bugs and lag problem etc. Till they launch Windows 7... rclxms.gif

Fast? Really? Windows 7 was released on 22nd of October 2009, and if Windows 8 is released around the same date in 2012, it'll fit just nice into Microsoft release cycle: 3 years.

The Windows Phone 7 is great... I like how the UI is one giant canvas that you can scroll to see more. I wonder how much of that will go into Windows 8.

So fast? I don't think so. Windows 8 is expected to be released in 2012. There's a leaked screenshot of Windows 8 showing a copyright notice like this:

Because Windows 7 have support for touchscreens but no UI for it? Which is why new UI is being developed to accommodate those expansion into the tablets area.

The M1 build is pretty useless IMHO, it's very buggy and nothing new for us to try. I'm waiting for the M3 build leak.

This is the EARLY build of Windows 8, built on top of Windows 7 Enterprise x86, only few changes were made in this build.

Those long strings are what determine the build is Windows 8 build or not. What if someone hacked the resource of a Windows 7 build and change the logo from Windows 7 to Windows 8? Will you believe that? rolleyes.gif

Why build from scratch? Since all those technologies from Windows 7 is still current, there's no need to waste time to build something that works from scratch. That would be stupid. Just like how Windows 7 was built on Windows Vista foundation, they can focus less on development and get more features on the new Windows with less times and efforts.

Well, after you install it, you might notice that the are not many features to try out, but some guys have found out the ways to unlock some new features like Modern TaskUI, Explorer Ribbon UI, etc., few days back. But this build is very old and buggy, you might want to wait for another build. smile.gif

Just released? Check back your calendar. Windows 7 was released on 22nd of October, 2009. Following the usual Microsoft release cycle (which is around 3 years), Windows 8 will be released around that time in 2012.

If you check more about Win 8, you'll know that they've predicted that MS will release Win 8 in 2012, probably the mid or end of the year. Some screenshots also has shown a copyright notice of MS, like "© Copyright 2012 Microsoft."

By the way, MS has developed a more user-friendly BSoD and more informative.

I've to admit that it looks better.

i dun think microsoft will name it as Windows 8, since there is no Windows 6.
The 7 could be stand for V or aka Vista, but the updated version of Vista.
So, the next version could be iWindows or Windows Evolution.

Windows Vista is version 6.0, Windows 7 is suppose to be version 7, but since Microsoft doesn't want to break compatibility with older applications like they did with Windows Vista, they stick with version 6 and only increase the subversion number. So Windows 8 is the logical name for the next version of Windows IMHO.

If that the case, you also might want to say that Microsoft should do <INSERT_YOUR_FAV_WIN8_FEATURE_HERE> in Windows XP. Geez, do I need to remind you that there's handful of tech savvy back then in Windows XP era compared to what we have right now? In the old days, those BSOD are meant for specialist (or technicians) to work with WinDBG or any other related tools which most end users didn't know how to.

Things are improved along with the pace. If end users right now is not tech savvy as 10 years ago, what's the point making it available? Right?

P/S: I never get BSOD with my Windows 7 smile.gif

Still using Windows XP Professional coz there still got incompatible issues and RAM leaking in Windows 7..... I will see how this "Windows 8" works. If still just like Windows Vista, I will stick to Windows XP till software developer stop integrating their software to windows XP....smile.gif

Care to elaborate what memory leaking issue you're having? All future version of Windows (that I know of) will based on Windows Vista (using the same core), if you're expecting it will be based on Windows XP then sorry to get your hopes down. It will never happens, Windows XP core is way too old.

i don't think windows 8 or whatever the name is will be release so soon. windows 7 as it is now is considerably the most stable windows version ever . creating another version of windows in a very short period of time will only confuse customers. many people are still using old hardware , and new version of operating system usually require them to change the hardware a little bit here and there if not much. my take is that they will release "windows 7 release 2 <whatever-edition> " to provide support for more old hardware perhaps to help people make transition from old windows to windows 7 .

Windows 8 or whatever it will be named when it's final is needed to accommodate changes that allows Windows to run on ARM processors (that usually powers your mobile phones/tablets) which is a big and important steps in expanding Windows territory. If peoples can't afford the newer Windows 8, why upgrade? Just stay with Windows 7.

As I said before, Windows 7 just fine, there's no need to upgrade to Windows 8. Mind you that half of the peoples that still not on Windows 7 platform are not because they're incapable of doing so, but they have the closed mindset that aren't ready for changes, which are quite huge from Windows XP to Windows 7. Too bad they can't catch up like the rest of us. For businesses, they always lags behind, there's nothing Microsoft can do to help them and they still fine running the older version of Windows, so why do they need to upgrade to Windows 8? Microsoft ain't forcing them down the throat right? I knew several businesses that still stick to Windows 2000 with Office 2000 because they don't have the time and money to upgrade.

Bottom line is, why should Microsoft stop at Windows 7 just to satisfy select group of users, or why should any company do?

Man, can you guys stop jumping to conclusions and say the name isn't Windows 8, it's not going to be released by next year(which we assume it should based on the previous Windows releases, should be a good proof of it going to be released next year), etc.

BTW, build 7959 leaked. And you can use NoPill and BluePill to unlock the hidden features, but only on the previous builds because the features are disabled in this build as this is a workstation copy AFAIK.

The tiles from Metro UI is gorgeous but very much annoying on normal keyboard/mouse as they're just wasting space.

For tablets and AIO PCs, it would be very much suitable. I guess after a few manufacturer have put W7 in tablets, MS is taking the chance to improve it on that front. More versatile for different type of platform.

i agree with u at the bold part. i feel a little bit awkward when i use mouse to to click and drag (or simply move the cursor) to simulate sliding in touch screen. experience this when i was playing angry bird in google chrome XD i still prefer to play angry bird with my sister's ipod touch. may be they can add in some touchpad gestures in laptop to improve the metro ui, for example sliding since touch pad and touch screen share some similarities

Yes, you are right about the financial constraint faced by small- and medium-sized companies that cannot afford to upgrade to the latest hardware and software. What I do not understand is that some large corporations who can afford private jets and limousines to their executives refuse to upgrade to Windows 7, leaving their staffs with lots of problem in dealing with incompatibity in their computers with current software. The corporations only need to allocate a small portion of their excess budget to upgrade to Windows 7, and yet they refuse to do so, even though they are financially capable. mad.gif

And why should them? Most of the times, BSOD caused by drivers, which supplied by 3rd party hardware vendors, or bad application drivers, which is not manufactured by Microsoft. So again, why should them?

Any idea when windows 8 will be officially released? I'd like to get a new laptop soon and if possible I'd love to get one with Windows 8. I can wait! biggrin.gif

Errrr... Why would you compare with such ancient monolithic design? Total change? Are you sure you want that? Have you used Windows XP when it was launched around 2001? Peoples moaned, when their softwares and hardwares would not work at all in the newly and (almost) totally changed Windows XP. Are you sure you want that? hmm.gif

That's why there's UI for that, so those kind of peoples doesn't need to know every bit of changes made.

.NET Framework isn't going anywhere, Microsoft won't just ditch it for fully HTML5 + JS apps, that's just insane. Remember that there's different type of Windows audience out there.

Windows 8 is still in internal development, so there won't be any official release of it as for now. However, Microsoft is expected to release a public beta this September at the BUILD conference. So you might want to wait until then.

It's almost 2 years since it was officially released, and that doesn't count when Windows 7 was in beta, so adding another year it's gonna be 3+ years, so yes, we do need new Windows. At least I need 'em. smile.gif

Windows 8 will uses UEFI, which allows faster booting and SSD prices are coming down, so I believe you can achieve that in the next one or two years.

Fully different? Don't bet on it. Last time when Microsoft change the interface from Windows XP to Windows Vista, even though not entirely, people raaaaaageee. Microsoft already have a new UI, while still retain the default Windows UI.

based on the preview video..some of the improvement that i can see inside 8 is only touchscreen, plus an application of tile box which you can have in WP7 . my main concern however is how will the windows team handle the memory usage of such application... don't want win8 fail like vista

Haven't you know already? Those applications are built with HTML5 and JavaScript. It'll use the same memory as it is in browser. Oh, Windows 8 have UEFI support, and combined with SSD, Windows can finally boot fast enough without having POST meddling in the between, and also Windows 8 will also running on ARM processor, which means Windows here, there, anywhere (virtually).

The only news I am interested in is the news that users can completely turn off the stupid Metro UI on desktops and laptops (turn off=not even a single character of the code will be loaded) and changing the Start button to the regulat Start button where I can browse a list of my installed programs when I click it instead of showing me the Metro UI.

Even better if users are allowed to uninstall the Metro UI.

Messy? You haven't used Ribbon on Microsoft Office 2007/2010? It's way better than the current Windows Explorer, and you can hide the Ribbon if there's so much hate for it.

It was real, but the laptop is a powerful one. Still, it looks promising. Finally some major improvement rather than silly UI changes.

is there any Beta win8? not Xp or vista or win7 with win 8 theme.

Leaked builds are available, you just need to find it yourself instead of asking the question that has been asked tons of times.

The tablet functionality is different as there's none in Windows 7. But overall, it's still similar to Windows 7.

So if anyone that have been hanging around with Windows XP, they should at least familiarize the 'new' Windows environment by using Windows 7 first, so they won't get that much of a shock when using Windows 8 laugh.gif

Usable on both but it's geared towards tablet. I just hope Microsoft will release a touch-friendly version of Microsoft Office next as the last time I use the Microsoft Office 15 beta, it's still the same.

Yeah, the Office 15 beta is just the same as before, hopefully they won't make an ugly interface. What's important is it's easiness to use.

more like geared towards wp7 live tile. those metro UI are actuall "all program" or the "start/windows" button on normal windows environment. whatever u installaed in windows it will appear at the metro UI.

so if you arent doing any technical things on windows. the metro UI is a good and easy platform for your work/entertainment/social network needs.

What I meant to say is, the current Office 15 beta is not touch friendly. It's still the same Office 2010 and if there's no alternative touch-friendly UI, I bet it's going to be quite hard to use, especially with those (existing) touch tablets that have low resolution.

hey they got to release new version once in a while, nobody will satisfy with their products forever, there's no perfect os so they have to improve regularly, btw... which big company don't want $$$? There are not doing 100% charity you know? (although MS did a lot of charity)

I think there are reasons why it is only available for Developer's preview rather than to end users like us so that we can make a good impression on the final product rather than having an early conclusion on an unfinished software.

I think a lot of folks are expecting "Windows 8" to be the typical "your next Windows upgrade". I don't think this is quite the case, at least at the moment.

I truly believe Microsoft has done Windows 7 right, and now aims to take the next step in computing - focusing on touch functionality. It is an area that has existed on Windows platform before, but never on this scale - across the entire version. It is true that there may not be noticable changes when compared to Windows 7 (e.g Home users etc.) but underneath Windows 8 is a brand new 'layer' that adds a tremendous amount of the "next step" in computing.

Watching the preview builds and videos, I have to say that Microsoft is yet again taking a risk. In my opinion, a risk that will work out both ways - those who want the touch functions and those who just want a newer operating system. Vista had too many new features/unwanted features and was considered "bloated". Windows 7 solved it all by trimming and making everything user-centric. Windows 8 aims to bring touch features to the forefront, something Microsoft has never done on this scale.

So in a way, Windows 8 may not be essential, but it is the next version of Windows that will improve user experience. Whether or not it will be popular among computer manufacturers / users, remains to be seen. I believe (most) fans of Windows 7 will upgrade to Windows 8, while computer manufacturers will *hopefully* start manufacturing even more touch-capable computers. The Metro interface is sweet. Never seen one in the flesh, but it is a really clean and neat interface.

Don't upgrade if you don't want to. Windows 8 was primarily designed to run on ARM devices, so you can use Windows on tablets.

For the past few weeks we have been hearing a lot of rumors about the upcoming Windows 8 tablets from Dell ,HP,Asus and that their Windows 8 tablet would most probably be released in the Q3 of 2012.

One of the main manufacturers to Watch out for the upcoming Windows 8 tablet is Samsung,as we already saw a glimpse of their Windows 8 offering at the build conference where the Developers were given Samsung Windows 8 Developer Preview Tablets and now Samsung’s Samsung’s head of sales and marketing Uhm Kyu Ho in an interview with Bloomberg that Samsung will launch its first Windows 8 based tablet in the second half of 2012.

What makes it different is this OS is used on all type of devices rclxms.gif
But for professionals, these touch features and new start screen design will not help much blink.gif
