AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Hi alien, I uploaded the Scholes Centurion video (a compilation of all 100 goals he scored throughout his career in Man United).

If it's allowed, I thought why not share with other forummers by posting the link in the first few posts. The link is : http://rapidshare.com/files/367460321/PS_Cntrn1x0.rar =)

Glad I dont have to go work outstation this weekend and I will be able to enjoy the start of real football! Go United! Would love to see the combination of Javier

and Rooney, but perhaps more realistically, it would be Berba and Javier as Rooney just came back into training. Perhaps Macheda and Berba? Javier to be the

supersub this weekend. blush.gif Still more or less a month to go before the end of transfer period. Would like to see Defour and see what was the hype behind it

Rovers seal Diouf deal

QUOTE
Blackburn Rovers have taken striker Mame Biram Diouf on a season-long loan from Manchester United.

The highly-rated youngster is set to spend the entire 2010/11 campaign at Ewood Park as he continues to get to grips with life in England.

The 22-year-old agreed a move to Old Trafford from Norwegian side Molde last summer, but only linked up with his new employers in January of this year.

He went on to make six appearances for the Red Devils and bagged his first goal for the club during a Premier League meeting with Burnley.

The Senegal international is held in high regard by United, but they accept that his development may be best served elsewhere.

Potential

With fierce competition for places, Sir Alex Ferguson cannot guarantee Diouf the regular football he needs.

He will, however, be able to get that at Blackburn, who have been in the market for a striker all summer.

They will be delighted to have snapped up a player of considerable potential, with the African ace having shot to prominence after grabbing 33 goals in 75 games for Molde.

Sam Allardyce could offer his latest recruit a first taste of life at Rovers in their friendly date at Hearts on Saturday.

Whatever happens, Diouf is due to link up with the Senegal U21 squad on Tuesday for a fixture on Tuesday, but will be back in plenty of time for Blackburn's season opener against Everton next weekend.

Boss working on squad

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson says he is still finalising his Barclays Premier League squad for the 2010/11 season following the introduction of new rules regarding the size and make-up of his pool of players.

Under new guidelines, clubs are required to register a squad of up to 25 players, which must include at least eight 'home-grown' players, at the end of each transfer window – the first deadline this season is 17:00 BST on 1 September.

Home-grown players do not have to be English and are defined as those who "irrespective of nationality or age, have been affiliated to the FA or Welsh FA for a period of three seasons or 36 months prior to their 21st birthday.”

Clubs can supplement their squad with an unlimited number of players under the age of 21.

One player Sir Alex is still waiting on in terms of availability this season is Owen Hargreaves. The midfielder is currently having treatment in America following a set-back in his recovery from a long-term tendonitis problem, but the United manager insists he will give Hargreaves as long as possible before deciding whether or not to include him in his final 25.

“We can keep it open for Owen until 31 August,” insisted the Reds’ boss. “There is no rush. Owen will stay in America until he’s ready to come back into training.

“I haven’t looked into how the new rules affect everyone else yet, I’ve only addressed what we’ve had to deal with.

“It was interesting to sit down and assess the squad - the Da Silvas, for example, aren’t classed as home-grown players until this time next year. [Kiko] Macheda comes under the same umbrella. So there have been all these little things we’ve had to look at.

“The foundational part of our home-grown players like Giggs, Neville, Scholes, Fletcher and Brown is fine, there are no problems there.

“[John] O’Shea is a strange one though – he’s not accepted in the Champions League as a home-grown player because he missed the deadline by six days when he first joined us, but he is classed as home-grown in the Premier League.

“I think the new rules are a good thing. It had to happen. You have to pay attention to them and make sure you tick all the boxes and don’t make any mistakes.”

I think rooney will be on the bench tonight as well as hernandez. So berbatov + Owen to start. Nani, Giggs, Scholes, Fletcher in midfield. In Defence, Evans, Vidic, O'shea. Who's gonna play RB? Brown, De Laet? Is Gary Neville available?

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed Hilario will start in goal against Manchester United on Sunday, in an otherwise unchanged side that began against Hamburg.

That means Branislav Ivanovic joins John Terry in the centre of defence with Paulo Ferreira at right-back and Ashley Cole on the left, Michael Essien and Frank Lampard flanking John Mikel Obi in midfield, and Salomon Kalou, Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda in attack.

Yup since SAF said he wont rush on world cup players...and we have plenty of striking options...so rooney to be on the bench first. Valencia to replace Giggs and then exchange flanks with Nani. Chelsea's gonna field a really strong squad there. Good luck. -.-

Man Utd boss Ferguson: Hernandez, Rooney can play together

QUOTE
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson can see Javier Hernandez playing alongside Wayne Rooney in attack.  Already the Mexico World Cup star has scored three times in as many pre-season games, including one against United for his old club Chivas, and will be out to make it four on the trot in Sunday's Community Shield encounter with Chelsea at Wembley.  Such form will not be easy for Ferguson to ignore once the competitive action starts next weekend, and the Old Trafford chief admits he could be tempted to play his new recruit alongside his Rooney.  "We have not tried anything like it yet but we have played two strikers in the past," conceded Ferguson.  "It doesn't mean it will happen every week but it will happen on some occasions.  "Hernandez has had a good start. He is an intelligent player with tremendous pace and penetration.  "The Mexican league is tough, so bringing players to England from there is not going to be a problem."

Evans energised for new season

QUOTE
It's been a gruelling four weeks on the training pitch for the majority of the squad, but Jonny Evans feels the testing regime has provided the perfect preparation for the new campaign.

A three-week tour of North America and Mexico emcompassed daily double training sessions and a handful of closely-fought matches that yielded three wins from five.

The tour squad was joined by a host of familiar faces - returning from both injury and extended summer breaks after the World Cup - for Wednesday night's 7-1 demolition of the Airtricity League XI and Evans believes the squad are in good shape ahead of the 2010/11 campaign.

"The pre-season we’ve had so far has been really good and I think everyone’s raring to go," he told MUTV. "It's been a bit strange with the World Cup lads coming back so late, but the youngsters who have trained with us have done well.

"The training sessions and fitness work the coaches have given us seem to be paying off. I think a lot of us are feeling the benefits of them now."

Also back in action in Dublin - and back among the goals - were Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia, who have both completed recoveries from hamstring and ankle injuries respectively.

"It was disappointing to lose Michael when we did last season," adds Jonny. "We probably could have used him towards the end of the season with his experience, grabbing goals in games for us.

"He was starting to really settle in when he got his injury as well, so it’ll be nice to have him back, and Antonio gives us more options. So things are looking good."

Reds loan out strike duo

QUOTE
Mame Biram Diouf and Joshua King will further their football education with loan deals away from Old Trafford.

Senegalese striker Diouf has completed a season-long agreement to join Sam Allardyce's Blackburn Rovers, while Norwegian youngster King has signed up with Preston North End until mid-November.

King joins up with fellow United loanee Matty James, who is spending the entirety of 2010/11 at Deepdale, and the pair could both feature for Darren Ferguson's side today against Doncaster in the Championship.

Diouf could also go straight into action for his new side, in Blackburn's pre-season friendlies against Hearts today and Celtic on Sunday.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has also confirmed that he is aiming to take another United striker, Danny Welbeck, on loan for the entire season.

Thousands attend open training

QUOTE
About 10,000 United fans flocked to Old Trafford on Saturday morning to watch Sir Alex's men be put through their paces ahead of Sunday's Community Shield clash at Wembley.

The Manchester United Foundation's annual open training session gives supporters a rare chance to see their heroes practice at close quarters. And this year fans packed the terraces in North Stand tier 1, raising approximately £30,000 for charity.

It was the first opportunity for locals to glimpse new signings Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling in the flesh, while returning World Cup stars, including Patrice Evra and Wayne Rooney, also took part in the 75-minute session.

Club photographers John and Matt Peters were on hand to capture the action and you can view our image gallery by clicking on the main picture above.

Training squad: Kuszczak, van der Sar; Brown, Evans, Evra, Fabio, Neville, O'Shea, Rafael, Smalling, Vidic; Carrick, Cleverley, Fletcher, Gibson, Giggs, Nani, Park, Scholes, Valencia; Berbatov, Chicharito, Macheda, Owen, Rooney

Nani relishing Blues test

QUOTE
Nani is determined to help Manchester United strike the first blow of the new season against Chelsea on Sunday.

The two teams continue to step up their preparations for the 2010/11 Premier League campaign when they meet in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Carlo Ancelotti and Sir Alex Ferguson will be looking for signs of increased sharpness from their players and will hope to avoid injuries.

But there is also a trophy up for grabs and the opportunity to take a small psychological advantage into the long battle ahead.

Nani scored in the corresponding fixture last year in what turned out to be a breakthrough season for him, and he is looking forward to the game.

"People doubted my quality when I arrived from Sporting Lisbon but perhaps my performances against Chelsea have been my answer to those people - my personal revenge, if you like," the Portuguese winger told The Sun.

"Chelsea are exciting opposition for me. I've played some good matches against them and also scored in the Community Shield last season.

"So to begin the season against them again with the chance of winning a trophy is terrific.

"It's also a great chance for us to strike a blow against them so early in the season."

City handicap

Manchester City have been tipped to challenge the likes of United and Chelsea for the Premier League title after a summer of heavy spending in the transfer market, when they have brought in several high-profile names from overseas.

However, Nani doubts whether City will be able to keep pace with the leading pack early on as he knows from personal experience how difficult it is for foreign players to adjust to English football.

"I sincerely believe that foreign footballers are not a negative for the Premier League," he said.

"But I must point out that it's really not that easy to adapt to life in England. I arrived very young and had the help of Cristiano (Ronaldo), the assistant manager then Carlos Queiroz and Anderson - who joined from Porto.

"The Portuguese group was key for me but it's not same at all clubs.

"Not only was the country new but the language, the fashion and the weather conditions. I am a man with warm blood and now I'm used to the cold in the north.

"Because of all this I think that while City possess some good players they are certain to miss a few points in the first matches which will prove a big handicap in their chase for the title.

"They must unify their reinforcements quickly."

Carrick back in training

QUOTE
Michael Carrick has taken part in Manchester United's open training session, just a day after being ruled out for two weeks with an ankle injury.

Sir Alex Ferguson announced on Friday that the England international midfielder would miss the start of the new season after picking up the injury in United's last pre-season match against League of Ireland XI last Wednesday.

But the former West Ham and Tottenham playmaker was in attendance at Old Trafford and was moving freely in training to give the Red Devils fans encouraging news ahead of their Premier League opener against Newcastle.

The da Silva twins - who have been suffering with food poisoning - also took part in training and could be in contention to feature in Sunday's Community Shield clash against Chelsea.

No value

Ahead of Sunday's clash, Ferguson is adamant he will not dip into the transfer market for the sake of it.

The United boss has continually insisted there is no one 'exciting' him in the transfer market and is not tempted to take a plunge in the last three weeks before the window closes.

"I don't see the value in adding to our squad," said Ferguson.

"I am happy with what we already have and I don't see any reason to add to that just because people want me to buy someone.

"Supporters want you to buy players. They like to see a big signing every year. Sometimes the players like to see a big signing.

"But we have to be sensible about it. We look at our own squad and ask what do we need?

"I look at the players everyone says are available and they don't excite me."

I have a feeling SAF wants us to start strong this season, and not rely on end of season run ins like usual. Chelsea are getting mechanically too consistent during that period too. Hence the Fulham game.

SAF said he's not signing anywho

Report: Hearts 1-1 Rovers

Posted on: Sat 07 Aug 2010

SENAGALESE striker Mame Diouf, set to complete a loan move from Manchester United, scored on his debut for Rovers as Sam Allardyce's men warmed up for the new Premier League season with a draw away to Hearts.
The 22-year-old was on the mark within 15 minutes of coming on as a  second half substitute.
.
.
But on the hour mark, new boy Diouf was on the mark as he streered a low shot in to the net from the left hand side of the box after Pedersen had touched on a cross from the right by El-Hadji Diouf.

its bound to be associated even tho he was there just for a match.

well weill see what happens.if we do buy him im sure some one will be on the way out, with they way things are currently the most likely one is obertan.

haven't done enough to impress in the senior squad as of yet.

True. Someone has to be sold but IMHO dont think it would be Obertan. Obertan just arrived and have yet to show his full potential. Plus he is a winger/side

player rather than playmaker like Ozil. Not sure who would be sold though, but I dont think anyone in the squad would warrant to be sold off.

Carrick is underrated, player like him, in top form, can change a game with a simple long ball forward.

lol, relax dude. I'm one of those who support Carrick.

He has lost form recently and this match is presumably something SAF wants to use to see if Carrick has rediscovered his inner fire.

Hopefully they'll be able to keep up or improve on that form. We would need them. Evra is not a machine and an in form Carrick would bring a lot of stability to the side.

if Terry goes on to play like this (not to mention the elbow he did on Chicharito), Chelsea's threat would really reduce. Terry and Cole was constantly caught off

to be honest, i hope fergie will not rush hernandez. maybe play him as subtitute for early season, let him get to use the playing style, weather etc. then only make him a regular starter...

An in form Carrick would lessen the burden. Play him next to Fletcher, and maybe another one just ahead of them or alongside them, we can pwn anyone. And then there's Ando waiting to flourish..

there is no scholes replacement. people said it's either xavi or fabregas playing somewhat similar to him.

same as no ronaldo or rvn replacement. we will cope.

in the last thread some one brought up the 25 man and home grown player thing in discussion.i think were safe from any problems from that rule.

we have more then enough truly home grown players and add that to the 3 years home grown players.most of our imports are under the 21 for now and they will reach that 3 years home grown status by next season.so no problem for us there. biggrin.gif

Wonderful vision for the assist!!!

Exquisite finishing!!!!

In one bold move, Chicharito shows that he can both create and score goals.

I wonder if it would have gone in if the ball didn't hit any part of his own body? laugh.gif That would have been horrible. Just imagine the outcry from the muppets.. especially since Chelsea pulled a goal back later on and was well on top of us in the last 10-15mins. biggrin.gif

Bit unlucky. The ball curled towards his back instead of meeting him dead on. But luckily lady luck seems to be on his side. France, Argentina, MLS All Stars, us, League of Ireland XI and now Chelsea. Not bad for a cheap unknown signing. biggrin.gif

Yeah. Good find by our scouts. He looks like a very good signing so far. Still early days, but his movement, pace, and intelligent plays so far is pretty impressive! That pass to Berba early on in the 2nd half was good vision. Looking forward to seeing more of him. Last 20-30mins in games, he would be a serial killer!

QUOTE
He scored his first competitive goal on 8 August 2010, scoring United's second goal in the 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the 2010 FA Community Shield. Coming on at the start of the second half, Hernández got on the end of a pass from Antonio Valencia before the Mexican’s shot deflected off his own face and into the net.

im guessing,

say for example, out of 50 man utd & liverpool fans, 1 or so will know the answer.

its really something deep to look at between us and liverpool besides looking the equals of 18.

maybe it needs a bit of research ? i say this because i too was questioned from my friend as he did his research and i got left with an embarras face

we're both man utd supporters by the way.

Fergie responds to Ozil reports

QUOTE
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has implied that he will not attempt to sign Germany's rising star, Mesut Ozil, in the summer transfer market.

The Old Trafford boss was at Craven Cottage on Saturday to watch a pre-season friendly between Fulham and the playmaker's club, Werder Bremen, to add to reports that he is preparing a bid for the World Cup ace.

But after United's 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield on Sunday, Ferguson said that he was only in London on a scouting mission ahead of a Premier League trip to the banks of The Thames on 22nd August.

The Scot admits he is an admirer of Ozil, who has previously said that he would relish the opportunity to move to England, but he insists that he is happy with his current squad.

Asked about his trip to Fulham, Ferguson told Sky Sports 1: "I was there to look at Fulham.

"Ozil is interesting a lot of teams but at this moment I trust the ones I've got. I've got a really good squad of players."

Fletcher - United for life

QUOTE
Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has reiterated his desire to stay at Old Trafford for the whole of his career.

The 26-year-old Scotland international has moved through the trainee ranks to become a regular in the United side.

He now hopes to emulate long-serving colleagues Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and ply his whole trade at the club.

Nowhere better

Fletcher said: "I can't imagine being anywhere else. For me there is nowhere better than United and if I can play my whole career at this club, I'll be a very happy man.

"Everything about the club from the fans, the facilities, right through to the structure is just fantastic and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else - and there is something very special about staying at one club for your whole career.

"Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are all legends at Old Trafford and to get anywhere close to that would, for me, be a real achievement."

Fletcher added the club are now aiming to push on after the disappointment of missing out to Chelsea by one point in the Premier League last term.

Disappointing

He added: "It was just extremely disappointing for us last season. This club expects success and although we won the Carling Cup, we just didn't do enough in the league or the Champions League.

"It's up to us now to re-focus, look at what happened last season and to move forward. Hopefully we'll have more luck on the injury front and we'll learn from the experience of last time.

"It has really given us an extra determination for this campaign and hopefully that will help us.

"We all felt very flat after last season, especially after three fantastic seasons of winning the league. It was hard to take and we had wanted to make it four in a row.

"We needed a bit of luck to be successful last season and we didn't always get it. You only need to look at the decisions that went against us in those two Chelsea games and the injuries we had. If those things go your way then you're likely to be in a different position.

"We have to look ahead now and there is definitely a different feeling within the camp, after losing out in the bigger competitions last season.

"It has definitely been a period of reflection in terms of what happened and what we could do better. Now we are looking to push on."

It would've gone out if it didn't hit his head but superb play by him...great control..excellent passes..salute his bravery to challenge all those bigger & taller players..Scholes passes was crispy it was sooo yummy...looks like Chicarito works well with Berbatov than Rooney...but it's still too early to tell..Glory2!!

SAF intend to give Evra a rest more (quoted)

Fabio did half decent job last night, luckily Kalou and Fereira didnt manipulated it well.

but i dont mind to see Fabio again next week, with Evra on bench.

certain footballers are good at scoring with their feet or head .... hernandez took it literally and used both. sleep.gif''

and yesterday just proved once again that VDS is god damn hard to be replaced. .. i mean which goal keeper saves like that @@.

Scholes' passing was amazing as well and hernandez's control on the ball makes it a complete piece of art.

Manchester United Readying Bid For €16m-Rated Werder Bremen Star Mesut Oezil

QUOTE
Manchester United are ready to make a concrete offer for Werder Bremen playmaker Mesut Oezil, provided manager Sir Alex Ferguson can convince the club's hierarchy that the Germany star represents good value, according to a report from The Guardian.  Oezil could be available for £13.5 million, as he is in the last year of his contract in Bremen and could leave for nothing next summer.  The German outfit are apparently considering retaining the player until after their Champions League qualifier with Sampdoria, because of the huge sums of money on offer should they reach the group stages of the competition.  Barcelona and Real Madrid have apparently made contact with Werder, with the player understood to be not to impressed with what the Spanish clubs had to offer.  Chelsea are also rumoured to be hovering with intent, and may use their financial muscle to attempt to snare the player.  Ferguson has been highly ambiguous in his replies when asked about the player and, somewhat unusually, watched Oezil in action himself in a pre-season friendly at Fulham at the weekend.

Ten reasons why it's United's year

QUOTE
The latest edition of Inside United is on the shelves, and the monthly United mag is feeling confident about the new season. Here are 10 reasons why IU believes 2010/11 will be our year...

1. The weight of history – since Sir Alex’s first championship win, only once has there been a gap of more than a year (2004-2006) between United losing and regaining the crown. You won’t get much value betting against another win in 2010/11.

2. Hunger – the gaffer always looks his players in the eye before the season begins to see if the drive to succeed is still there, but he’ll scarcely need to rally the troops this time around. We confidently beat the current champions at Wembley on Sunday, and there’s no doubting we want our trophy back!

3. World Cup woe – Chicharito aside, United’s internationals had disappointing World Cup campaigns. Why is this good? 1) They’ll be desperate to get back to winning ways. 2) They’ll have had a decent rest.

4. We can’t be that unlucky with injuries again – surely we won’t spend another winter with two entire back fours on the treatment table.

5. Help for Wayne - 30+ goals between a resurgent Dimitar Berbatov and the new-boy Chicharito, You heard it here first.

6. A last hurrah? Giggsy, Scholesy, Nev and Edwin will all want another winners’ medal before (eventually) hanging up their boots (although rumour has it Ryan may get a contract extension to 2050)

7. Youngsters to the fore – the new breed, led by Jonny Evans, will be crucial to United’s squad. Keep an eye on Rafael, Fabio, Macheda, Gibson, Smalling and Obertan, plus a hot tip for a midfield breakthrough, Tom Cleverley.

8. John O’Shea – His defensive balance was sorely missed last term (he played 54 games in 2008/09) and we’ve just got a hunch he’ll do something absolutely crucial in the run-in. Let’s say, a winner at the Emirates…

9. Rooney’s still learning – 34 goals last season after a tactical shift up top showed Wayne’s football brain is still expanding. He only stopped scoring in the run-in (and in the World Cup) because he wasn’t properly fit. He will get even better.

10. We are United. And we don’t like second.

But seriously, if the players keep that kind of form throughout the whole season I can see no problem why this year cant be ours.
I'm happy with the way we played. Berba and Chicharito pairing looks dangerous. Berba was playing with much much more confident. Scholes and Carrick pwned Ski's supposedly world class midfield. I'm happy that Carrick is back to his old self. form is temporary, class is permanent eh?

I still hope that SAF can bring in someone to replace Carrick. I still find him unconvincing so far.

But should Carrick suddenly become a sniper rifle in disguise, then no problem liao.

Hernandez excites Van der Sar

QUOTE
Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has backed new signing Javier Hernandez to take the Premier League by storm this season.

The Mexico striker announced himself to United supporters with a goal, albeit slightly fortuitous, in Sunday's 3-1 Community Shield victory over Chelsea at Wembley.

With the goal gaping following Antonio Valencia's pull back, the 22-year-old scuffed his shot up onto his own head and back into the empty net.

But, while it may not have been the way Hernandez dreamt of getting off the mark for United, Van der Sar believes the young Mexican - nicknamed 'Chicharito', the little pea - has already shown during pre-season he has a bright future at Old Trafford.

Talented

"He has been looking good for the last 10 days since he joined us in the United States," said the Dutchman, who turns 40 in October.

"How he scored does not really matter - the most important thing was for him to get on the scoresheet and for the fans to see a very talented player.

"He is a big prospect. More players are emerging and together with the experienced ones we have to try and bring something back.

"However, we don't just need the strikers to score. It is the midfielders and wingers who need to do their bit as well.

"(Antonio) Valencia scored and crossed for the second one. He is looking well.

"That is important. You need goals from lots of different places."

The Wembley reverse was Chelsea's fourth consecutive loss of their pre-season build-up.

Important

Conversely, United have enjoyed a decent return from their tour matches, beating both Celtic, Philadelphia Union and also the MLS All-Stars.

With so many of Sir Alex Ferguson's players coming off the back of a busy summer, Van der Sar feels the Community Shield victory shows things are moving in the right direction ahead of the opening game of the campaign at home to Newcastle next Monday night.

"It is the last game of pre-season and we only have a week to go before the real thing starts so it is important some players, like Wayne Rooney, get more playing time under their belts. That was important, in addition to winning the trophy," said the Dutchman.

"It is always the case that you want to win against your big rivals.

"Hopefully that is something we can use to get off to a good start in eight days' time to try and win our trophy back."
