QUOTE(Sheep319 @ Aug 9 2010, 10:33 PM) I still hope that SAF can bring in someone to replace Carrick. I still find him unconvincing so far. So, he has to score to be decent? But should Carrick suddenly become a sniper rifle in disguise, then no problem liao. Lets bring someone else to replace Ando, Hargreaves and Gibson as well. Ando has only managed to score once/twice for us. Hargreaves is a fecking crap, he is finished already and Gibson only has power in his kicks but not the brain of a proper CM. I find them unconvincing enough. |

The cons of having south american players. Having to travel half the world for friendlies sometimes. Most probably he wont feature in the next game.
Owen to score against one of his former employer! FTW! Would like to see more of Berba and Owen combination. Owen looking sharp during CS. |

QUOTE(Sheep319 @ Aug 10 2010, 08:19 AM) He has to "not hold on to the ball too long only to be softly tackled by a player then losing the ball" He is easily blamed and easily go unnoticed.Dunno la I still have a grudge against him after his abysmal performance last season. I'm hoping he can really make a difference next season. If he is playing with Scholes, he lets Scholes to dictate the play. The thing about Carrick is confidence and he needs a partner like Scholes to excel. He himself can play as a playmaker but I noticed that he lacks confidence. How should he gain them? Fans constantly picking on him. Good examples would be against Bayern last season. In the home match, the team suddenly played poorly but Carrick is easily blamed just because he was a bit slow to block the shot. In this case I could easily blame Rafael for being so naive in bringing down Scarface. Then again, it was a soft one. Ref was thick and done nothing when Rooney was kicked all around the pitch. Carrick is never the physical type like Ando, Hargreaves and Fletcher. He reads the opponent and tries to stop them in clean tackles. Again, if he is full of confidence he is able to pull the strings like nothing at all. This is one good example. |

Just a bit of confidence will do good for him. Looks like he had that against Chelsea. Let's hope that confidence grow and he'll have it most of the season. If he plays well, more often than not, we would too. His defensive game is quite underrated because he doesn't run around and make tackles. And his ability on the ball, keeping the play moving is important for us as well. Him on form would reduce our reliance on Scholes.
Added on August 10, 2010, 9:42 amAndo, Carrick, Fletcher, Gibson.. they all had parts of Keano-Scholes. Shame it's spread out on different players and not just one or two. ![]() This post has been edited by Wan: Aug 10 2010, 09:42 AM |

Carrick is fine. Don't understand all the hating. When on form, clearly one of the best central midfielders in the league. Good passing, good defensively and has a fair shot on him.

I've got no quirks with Carrick. Just suffered a dip in form last season. His partnership with Scholesy in our 06/07 season was phenomenal. He's like a chess player, plotting his passes before receiving the ball. He's even a very good tackler of the ball and is consistently tracking back to cover our defense. He has a magnificent passing range as well, which suits his attributes as a deep lying midfielder. Sure, he's not as good as our previous no. 16, but he has strengths of his own. The Community Shield tie was a much welcomed change from his poor performance last season. In most games, he was allowing the game to just pass him by, making him really anonymous. Hopefully the Chelsea game will see a turn in his form.

QUOTE(air_mood @ Aug 10 2010, 09:47 AM) Carrick is fine. Don't understand all the hating. When on form, clearly one of the best central midfielders in the league. Good passing, good defensively and has a fair shot on him. But he often needs too much time on the ball imo. Confidence will make him an improved player but a lot of teams are pressing us higher up the pitch these days in hope of catching the CM and counter attacking. Running speed and size is no longer key as Iniesta and Xavi has shown; its more of having nimble footwork, quickness and agility - which Hargreaves embodied when he was fit. Carrick who could pick brilliant passes 2-3 seasons ago now have to content with moving the ball sideways and making the full-backs work harder than they need to, because the opposing team is up on his face as soon as he gets the ball. He is sort of found out in my opinion. This is just a theory btw, but in order to make opposing teams drop deeper and leave gaps in the middle for players like Carrick and Scholes to operate, the strikers need to get up against the defenders and push the line all the way back to the opposition's half; similar to how andy cole used to play, right up against the shoulders. Rooney often drops too deep when he doesn't get the ball and Berbatov always plays in the AMC role anyway. Owen I think was bought for that purpose but he hasn't got the pace to worry defenders like he used to, so they'd rather play the offside trap with him. Hernandez.. now that's a different kettle of fish altogether. Stick him up between both Centre backs making angled runs, that should force managers to provide more cover. Theoretically |

Hargreaves and nimble footwork. That's a few words I thought I'd never see in a same sentence.
He needs lots of time on the ball?? 2-3 touches?? Moving the ball sideways?? You're saying that as if that's all he does. WTF?? Carrick has picked plenty of good thru forward passes. What?? He should be making Hollywood passes all the time now?? Then you lot will be complaining that he gives the ball away loads. He was very instrumental during the 1st half of last season as well before hitting that bad patch of form where he was one of our crucial players so how was it that he was only good and can pick out passes 2-3 seasons ago. Feckin hell the fans are spoilt and fickle. And he takes some time on the ball?? So what?? He is a defensive midfielder afterall. He is to win the ball, hold it in order for our forward players, wingers and his fellow midfielders to burst forward at which point he is to pick them out. Found out...feckin hell. A couple of poor games towards the end of last season. Hell, he wasn't even that poor, just average. That coupled with Scholesy's brilliance and Fletch's good form meant he was out of the team. And he is found out?? FFS. People said the same about Ronaldo btw in his 2nd season, how he was found out. This is why I've always maintained there's too many spoilt people on this thread. A couple of bad games, some poor form and the onus is there for most on here to sell everybody and replace them. Good thing they aren't the coach then ehh or at various points thruout the years we would have long seen Giggsy, Scholesy, Gaz and Wazza being sold. Oh, and Iniesta and Xavi can feck off. |
