Ermmm you are right that desire is high end and xt720 is a mid range fone.. and honestly, i prefer the desire for many reasons, however, one thing that the desire lacks is a dedicated GPU.. the GPU on the desire is the integrated one which is the same for all snapdragon processors.. whereas the XT720 has a dedicated GPU the PowerVR SGX530 if im not mistaken.. so technically games should run more smoothly on the XT720 especially 3D games.. The 1Ghz does make a difference, but i feel that the GPU is more important coz the xt720 is now clocked at 720Mhz (or sumwhere around there).. Neither of these fones are great gaming fones, but the xt720 juz has better graphical processing ability..
The best and smoothest fone for gaming would definitely be the Samsung Galaxy S.
and yes, agree with ur conclusion, u cant really compare both these fones because their in a different range, and different price range as well..
a better comparison should be between the xt720 and htc Legend.. and Desire and Galaxy S
u can compare when u play with those phone , not just compare from what u see on their spec..

..

desire n xt720 cannot be compared because desire is a high end smart phone while xt720 is a medium end smart phone.. btw, the screen resolution is WVGA(same like xt720) and it supports 720p video recording.. since when its VGA?
take note that most high end game require 1ghz processor to play smoothly..
u should try htc desire then u will noe about it..

Added on October 28, 2010, 8:32 amalsoo to mention the ability of desire to handle multitasking with 576mb ram compared to xt720 that have 256mb ram only..
Added on October 28, 2010, 8:36 amalso to mention desire comes with amoled screen and optical trackpad that can improve browsing through the net alot..

Added on October 28, 2010, 8:38 amconclusion: we cant compare both phones as 1 is high end n medium end..
Im talking based on my exprience play with those set not base on paper mehh.Dude ..u can compare head to head those set.By comparison, the XT720 comes with a relatively small 720 MHz processor and 256 MB of RAM. This does not mean the phone is slow however. In terms of processing power and speed, it performs almost every task very well. These chips can be cranked up to 1Ghz with some friendly modding and one can see snapdragon killing performance , and the high-quality TI OMAP/PowerVR chipset to power everything.Simply because it is not about clockspeeds the ti omap proccesor has a much better gpu processor and a total of 3 microprocessors, while the 1ghz snapdragon has a bad gpu and single microprocessor . 600 mhz ti omap3 arm8 >1ghz snapdragon .The GPU on the OMAP is a PowerVR SGX which performs better than the Snapdragon GPU which is an AMD Z430.Just because it's not a 1 GHz Snapdragon doesn't mean it's ancient hardware.
If u said 576mb ram on ur desire then why u still need app2sd on ur phone .
512mb is not really necessary. For most purposes 256mb is enough, especially if the Android is on raw interface (no UI) or have a relatively light UI.
The advantage of 256mb vs. 512mb RAM is that 256mb is lighter on the battery. Every bank of RAM needs dynamic recharge, which means current must run on them at all times.
The advantage of 512mb is that Android can load more apps into memory. That's why people complain when they run a task manager and see all those apps they didn't launch, being listed in the tasks. What Android does isn't launching the full app but parts of the app to do the following things.
1. Notifications
2. Services of that app so it can be used with other apps
3. kind of like an small placeholder on memory so the app can launch much faster since its partially loaded already, compared to launching an app straight from the flash cold. That's why the most used apps gets rotated on this basis. It makes app launching much faster since it feels like you're task switching.
If the SD is slow ,a problem of the internal SD used in the Samsung Galaxy S-it doesn't matter how fast the processor or how much RAM you have. You still gets lags and hiccups, which can be more severe than a much slower phone, with less RAM and a processor a generation behind.
In terms of speed connection XT720 contains Class 12 EDGE. The Desire has Class 10, 236.8 kbps EDGE. The XT720 possesses Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, DLNA WLAN and the Desire comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g WLAN. . The XT720 offers HSDPA, 10.2 Mbps and HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps 3G while the Desire possesses HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA, 2 Mbps 3G.
Dude...i can smell u a fan boyish. im just to help people outhere to choose a gud android phone value for their money
Here are some positive things about my xt phone

- The 720Mhz TI OMAP 3440 is actually faster than you think compared to equivalent Snapdragon Processor++
- Can be overclocked up to 1.2GHz via rooting ++
- Due to Android memory management 256MB is acceptable ++
- Bluetooth and wifi performance seem to be good too++
