Unifi DC++ Hub

user posted image

Hey fellow Unifi-ers, since Unifi is about to kick off in about 18 more exchanges.. I've finally decided to start up a Unifi DC++ hub. Originally, I was planning to revive the LYN DC++ project however it seems to have disappeared for some reason (I'm guessing inactivity). If you've already subscribed to Unifi.. please join us smile.gif !

Q: What is DirectConnect (DC++)?
A: Direct connect is a peer-to-peer file-sharing protocol. Direct connect clients connect to a central hub and can download files directly from one another. Hubs feature a list of clients or users connected to them. Users can search for files and download them from other clients, as well as chat with other users. DC++ is a free and open-source, peer-to-peer file-sharing client that can be used to connect to the Direct Connect network or to the ADC protocol.

Q: Why is there a need for a Unifi DirectConnect hub?
A: As you all know, Unifi provides every user with a symmetrical connection (upload speed == download speed). While it was nearly impossible to upload files on a long term basis on Streamyx connections (30-50KB/s tops).. Unifi enables each user to upload at 5/10/20mbps speeds. As Unifi home packages also have a data download cap (which we believe will only take in account international traffic), having our own local P2P network is a great way to share files with other Malaysians while conserving international bandwidth in the process .. and possibly preventing you from hitting your daily data cap within an hour.

Q: Who can join this Unifi DC++ hub?
A: At the moment, I've only allowed connections from the Unifi home network ranges to connect to the hub to ensure that only local traffic is utilized. If you're on Unifi home, simply download a DirectConnect client (most of us use ApexDC++). The hub also has a chat channel so you may interact with other Unifi users there. If you're not a Unifi user and you attempt to connect to the hub, you will likely not be able to (connection refused error).

Q: I'm a Unifi user, how do I connect to the hub?
A: Pick up a DirectConnect client (I recommend ApexDC++ -- http://www.apexdc.net/ ). Set up your username and connect to the hub address @ hub.athena.my OR 184.82.41.12 (if hub.athena.my is not working).
user posted image

Q: Do I have to setup any portforwarding?
A: Yes, you do. However if you're on the TM DIR-615 router.. simply select UPNP mode in the DC++ client options. The DIR-615 has UPNP enabled by default and this will allow the client to automatically configure the port forwarding for you.
user posted image

You may also use Manual Portforwarding with the DIR-615 (for better stability) :

I'm using port 5800 here -

Starting Guide to ApexDC++

So you just got Unifi and are worried about the cap? Rumour has it that local p2p traffic will not count toward your cap and thats why you are here.

The 1st thing anybody should do is read the 1st post in http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1479905

Then after you have downloaded the ApexDC++ client you are now ready to share the love with your fellow Unifi users. Lets go through this quickly.
  1. Start your client (duh)
  2. You will then be bombarded by a tonne of information. The 1st thing you should do is don't panic
  3. If you see the image below, the red circle shows the DC++ client windows. Everytime a new window opens, it will be shown here.
    user posted image
  4. Right click on each tab to close them. This makes things easier. You can add other hubs later when you are more familiar
  5. Now, click on Favourites like the screenshot
    user posted image
  6. The favourites window will now open. If you notice, the Favourites tab is now shown at the place pointed out in the earlier screenshot
  7. Untick all the hubs listed in Favourites. You may enable them later if you wish
  8. Right click on any black spot in the window and select 'New'
    user posted image
  9. Refer to Rivzanp's 1st post in this thread to enter the details
  10. You now have configured the client to connect to our little Unifi hub (well its really Rizvanp's but I've decided I like to call it 'our')
  11. But before you connect, you should set up the things you wish to share with us
  12. To do that, click on File -> Settings
  13. Click on 'Sharing' and put a tick on each folder you wish to share
    user posted image
  14. Click 'OK' and you are done
  15. To connect just right click on the newly configured hub in the Favourites area and select 'Connect'

Security Update (August 08, 2010)

Please DISABLE DHT in your Apex DC++ client icon_rolleyes.gif

Update :

Hub is closed until further notice. Drop me a PM if you're interested in hosting/managing a hub and I'll post your server up here/setup a DNS redirect.

Good effort to promote local P2P! Now, if only I had UniFi... Q3 2010 for PJ but only a small fraction of PJ is covered. Should be a long wait for me I suppose. TM even told me that my area does not support 4mbps Streamyx. sad.gif

its not discrimination, it is just selection. those who cannot contribute to the hub should not be allowed in. there will be more leechers than seeders as streamyx users will be bound to limit their upload speed as their download speed is affected if they upload at a higher rate than they are allowed to.

Unifi users do not face this problem. if u want to join, you have to be useful, you must share.

Its just the nature how ADSL works. Most likely you are going to limit your upload and just leech. UniFi users would again wouldn't be facing this problem at all.

Streamyx adsl is 4mbps download, 512 kbps upload

That is like max 512 Kb/s download speed, and 64 Kb/s upload speed

As you can see the download is more disproportionately larger than upload. So you will have a ton of streamyx user downloading, but hardly uploading.
The point of this DC++ hub is for Unifi fiber optic user that can download and upload fast. Especially upload part  nod.gif  5mbps, 10mbps, 20 mbps upload  laugh.gif
I think however that Penangfon/Metrofon users should be allowed to join. They have 2mbps download and upload, so that should be more acceptable speeds. Also they too are fiber optic broadband.
Time Fiber broadband is fine as well, but i doubt many have it  hmm.gif

Force download limit to 512k for streamyx user (or maybe 1Mb, doesn't hurt right). Is it good idea? This will make everyone contribute to the this.

This is the point , Mostly I see malaysians with Xunlei. Xunlei should be banned anyway. uTorrent as well. I'm uploading around 30-40Kilobytes/sec a right now. I guess that takes ages if its a large file tongue.gif

@mohamadfazli

Welcome to the hub, what distro are you on? biggrin.gif ! Lol

@calvin

Is your metrofon 2mbps uplink?

---

I'm not discriminating against non Unifi users or anything, I just feel the purpose of having a Unifi DC++ is best served by limiting it to Unifi users at the moment. As a Streamyx user, you have the ability to download from any source be it direct download (RS, MU, HF), torrents, MIRC or whatever without hitting a bandwidth limit.

The reason I started the hub is because Unifi users on the other hand do/will eventually have a bandwidth limit. Now apparently, they're saying local traffic will not be counted. So I've started this place for Unifi users to gather, share files and discuss Unifi issues while only consuming local bandwidth (within the Unifi network alone).

If I were to allow non-Unifi users in, to you.. it would just be another place to download because you have an unmetered contract with Streamyx whereas we have a 60/90/120GB monthly cap which will be measured on a daily basis. Right now, we're enjoying minimum speeds of 500KB/s (5mbps Unifi users) up to 2.0MB/s (20mbps users) on the DC++ hub per thread. Streamyx users cannot match this speed because of your asymmetric lines.. there's a huge difference when you're able to download at those rates vs 30-40KB/s ._.

In the end, TM may even choose to measure local Unifi traffic. At least if that happens, we can say 'hey! we're paying a ****load for this line and you're limiting us at some pretty ridiculous rates.. at least let us have unmetered local connectivity' or something like that. They don't really have a reason to cap local traffic nor can they throw the excuse that by sharing large files locally we can somehow slow down browsing to Youtube or other international websites.

And of course.. the network will still be fully functional in the event a shark rips TMs undersea fiber optic cables in two (which seems to happen with Streamyx every single month).

Uh no member list.. if you need to know who's inside you can just join and find out. It's also pretty hard to keep an updated member list and I'd rather not link LYN accounts to hub users.

As for prawn, I'm allowing all content except underage prawn.. anything morally wrong really.. but its not really a problem since no one is sharing prawn anyway.

That sounds like uPNP trying to do the mapping, but failing (router does not have uPNP?). Never liked uPNP anyway. Best to set up the port forwarding yourself.

As how to do that, see portforward.com as a starting guide.

Sorry for the downtime guys, my webhosts datacenter had a power failure for some server racks.. the server is back up but they're running fsck tests to ensure that the RAID arrays are not corrupted in any way. Hopefully, I'll get the hub back online by this evening.

Okay, I switched the web host for the hub server due to the 24 hour downtime (meh provider).

The address is still hub.athena.my but it will take a while for the DNS to propagate.. if you're impatient, switch your server address to 184.82.41.12 .

Currently, no. Only Unifi and Metrofon users can connect to the hub. But this may change later depending on how the current users feel about it :3

So i've been using this hub for the last 24 hours and I find that its pretty damn fast. I'm averaging about 490 kbps up and down.

This, however, now makes me wonder about etiquette. Should I organise my library so that its easier for other so navigate or should I just leave it as the mess it is? Any thoughts?

It's a p2p file sharing channel setup meant to prepared ourself for the possibly upcoming international traffic cap. It's something similar to the ancient Napster.

Registered for VIP5 & is now waiting for installation. Btw, 1.5TB hdd still pricey sad.gif

Yes for some users.. if you have your port forwarding set up properly (and confirmed to be working by a online port checker) then you shouldn't worry about it.

Starting Guide to ApexDC++

Nope, you probably had a network DC. There's a refresh period before it boots out inactive (or zombie) users.. just change your nick while waiting, should be able to re-enter.

It activates your webcam and looks for a view out a window. Then compares it to Google Street View imagery to confirm that you are in an area covered by Unifi, such as Bangsar or Damansara.

Watch when you first start up the DC++ client - your webcam light will flash on for a split second. If you don't see it, you probably blinked. Get some eye drops and then try again.

Hey Jeremy_John,

That warning + kick is a security feature provided by the hub software to prevent DoS attacks from being launched using the hub. You have to go to the connection settings of your DC++ software and either press 'Get IP Address' (which should pick up your WAN IP and not LAN IP like what it's doing now) or enter it manually. You should be running ApexDC++ (and not the normal DC++ client) which automatically pulls the correct WAN IP for you. If it doesn't.. you'll have to manually enter the correct WAN IP in that field everytime or use UPNP connection mode.

You don't' have to click on get IP every time, but sometimes if your modem restarts or you're assigned a new IP, you'll notice you'll get kicked from the hub due to an incorrect IP, at that point just go and update it.

I think you can disable the DHT feature..
as for the newest release of Apex DC++, I have problem to limit my download and upload speed...
Try to set it to 300Kbps, but then will revert to 113Kbps...wonders why..
Need to re-install back the previous version...

I'm moving to Taman Mayang. Before I bought the house, I called up Unifi and asked them when its coming to that area. They said June. So I was happy. Then June came and went, no Unifi. Called up and then they said August. Now they say, rollout date unknown.

Hai..... I renovated my house with all my conduits prepared for fibre optic cable and totally ignored normal phone line. Now die liau. Need normal phone line.

Hmmm does that mean you got my 'Exactly what you think it is' folder? Also, last night somebody want to give me some 'NAIS' games. You want ah?

There is a very basic webUI included in the client. You have to enable it in settings > advanced.

You might wanna configure it in settings > advanced > experts only.

It's very basic though; don't think you can manage anything. I use RDP instead. tongue.gif

You could get a cheap atom PC for dc++. smile.gif

@pff: Actually, my rig runs cooler than the average users' rig here (from my observation). It's all in the airflow. Highest recorded hdd temp was ~38C in an oven-esque room. tongue.gif

@heizad: Naked PCs are bad for airflow. tongue.gif

Evoriber - must make sure of a few things
1) Port mapping is done/ port forwarding in the router
2) Any firewall e.g. windows firewall has port opened for the program

Hi, I just got my Unifi yesterday :-

And I face the same problem - connection timeout

I have done all the port forward and turned off all firewall and antivirus.

I think my issue pertains to me using my own router rather than the one Unifi supplies.

HUA WEI @ LAN1 ---> Unifi DIR-615 --> TV
HUA WEI @ LAN2 ---> Personal Router --> PC

I even have problem with port forwarding on BitComet

I saw this problem being handled on the hub before. Turned out that the port used for DC++ hub client was shared with the torrent client.

I suggest checking to see if the DC++ client port is used by any other software.

Yes I have tried ports above 65k too - same.

Most likely the BTU is not forwarding ports correctly - NAT not working as expected?

Same here. To me, it seems that the DIR-615 has issues when UPnP-ing 2 programs at the same time.

Solved it by using manual port forwarding.

Lol I did mention on many occasions it's better that you guys go and torrent yourselves (especially those common stuff) or trade via sneakernet. I'm only on 5mbps and I'm also seeding stuff, so bandwidth is limited.

I've also asked if you guys prefer to have more slots vs more speed, but I've never gotten a straight answer. So for now, 2 slots; first come first serve.

Unless of course you guys want to subsidize a 20mbps line or two. Or three. tongue.gif

Personally I was deciding between 5 and 10, then decided to take 10 cos it's more value for the amnt you pay.

More speed is better - too many slots also no use.

I was thinking of when they start capping. I'm prepared to switch over to biz5 when it happens, and since it's RM50 more, it's considered an "upgrade" (at least, that's what they told me when I applied for Unifail).

If I take the vip10 now and change to biz5 later, I'll feel the pinch of halving my bandwidth. tongue.gif

Oh, and I couldn't care less for the IPTV. tongue.gif

I wonder if we have to return the STB if swapped over to the BIZ5 package.
I am just worried that they do not allow us to do it saying how our address is not qualify as "Business Address"

As with using torrents etc - if people are downloading form you, or you are downloading form others, you'll have reduced bandwidth. Simple maths really :-) For me, normal surfing is ok while I'm actively downing or upping something, but if I go online to game with my ps3, i tend to close all torrents and dc++ etc.

I always get Verlihub active search error... what's wrong? The it gets disconnected (the tab icon become red) - but the download still running. Just have to reconnect to search.

I've done manual port forwarding. I can search (get file list) but after a while I get this error and then get DCed.

Any tips hints?

If your modem is reset or restarted, then you'll have a new IP. You need to update this in the settings page/connection.

Hi, not trying to step on the toes of the TS or anyone in the Unifi DC++ club. I was recently wondering about the local/international backbone traffic while surfing around here checking on the problems inherently present in the explosion of peer to peer, gaming and internet commerce ect ect.

I feel that HSBB/Unifi roll out should help alleviate the download capping/throttling problem as the "Local" backbone would be increased exponentially from the slow DSL line which does not allow for feasible "local Upload" capability.

Bittorrent sharing technology, I have heard does search for the lowest ping, meaning closest peer. Which would mean that once Unifi roll out hit a certain level in Malaysia, the local community would no longer need to over utilize the "International" backbone traffic to download eg Naruto eps 200, 1million times thru the International backbone.

Instead just 1 instance of Naruto eps 200 would be channeled thru the International backbone and the remaining portion would be shared thru the local community.

If the current Unifi users does not want to experience download cap, which inevitably is caused by increased International backbone traffic, they would be wise to share via their upload to local backbone.

Just my 2 cents on how HSBB could make internet cheaper and faster for everyone.

The original motive of Peer to peer is to reduce cost of distribution and for that you need efficient infrastructure, and the "upload" infrastructure is here, I implore Unifi users to use it to make Malaysia's broadband speed the best in the world.

Sidenote: Streamyx user may have just a low 20kB/s upload, but that should not deter you from fully utilizing your capacity.
Futhermore, if I would actually dare to say, some Unifi DC+ Club's file share/availability of library with archival quality files may not be suitable for extensive sharing, however the files that is downloaded the most would definitely benefit from the awesome upload baseline Unifi user provides.
Bottomline, use Unifi DC++ Hub along with the p2p bittorrent to help alleviate International backbone traffic.

My example of Naruto, which is not licensed for distribution in Malaysia is not illegal?

My post is discussing technology rather then legals. Network efficiency if it is not "manually" throttled as it is.

It is a local network throttling if everyone just grab and do not utilize their upload factor.

Going to get Unifi soon, and this DC hub looks interesting. But I am a bit concerned with MCMC planting their spies inside the DC network to monitor our downloads - and use it as evidence to charge us later years from now if they want to enforce the copyright laws....

has anyone of you here thought over this? (legal aspect of sharing things online).

i using unifi.. but if you download using international backbone, should be illegal also compare to DC++ since it is local backbone. will be no harm i think.

yeah i agree on this technology as it will not stress out international links.. nowadays i just download from DC++ hub users.

Whats the problem with getting files from users? Most of the time you can ask fellow users on the hub but it takes a while for an answer.

To Get file lists, you need to male sure your ports are open ( I usually do manual port forwarding) and that any firewalls you have allow those ports and the program thru, especially windows firewall. Then just right click on the users name, and get file lists.

Honestly, it pays to learn how to do manual port forwarding on this DIR-615 router. I find the UPnP on the DIR-615 to be faulty and unreliable. E.g. If I run both DC++ as well as Utorrent, one of them will not be port forward properly.

@farkinid,
we await your personal productions with bated breath. Hahaha!! biggrin.gif

Right now, we are not sure how Unifi's local bandwidth is dealt with. If, like many other countries, local traffic does not count or exists on a separate cap, then DC++ is highly relevant.

Besides, local traffic usually means maximum bandwidth. You only have to worry about the uploaders speeds and nothing else.

That is what's on my mind.. with maximum bandwidth = download speed will be fully-utilized all the time.. When FUP implemented with local traffic also count (can't hope too much on TM), it will be much likely the speed will be capped in 4-5 days of usage.. sweat.gif

but if local traffic does not count as you said, DC++ can replace torrent.. drool.gif drool.gif drool.gif

hi all, I actually connected to DC++ yesterday and downloaded a movie, but today when I try to reconnect, it require me to re-index (hashing) my sharing, I've 300GB++ on an external USB hdd, do i need to re-index everything as it takes quite some times to finish the task.

Is there any workaround for this? Cheers

so what exactly does this do?
i mean , so we share our files online like a network and any of the users connected can just simply upload/download from another computer?

since its a local thing , speed would be faster ?

yeah, and when tm starts implementing the monthly cap, we won't have to waste our international bandwidth to get the files we want.

What do you mean?
Is it illegal to host a hub? No its not.
Is it illegal for people to gather and trade files? Depends on the file doesn't it?
Is it illegal to give people my super private home-made action movies? Yes actually.... distribution of pornography is illegal in this country. But you really want to, pm +Newbie+. He got copy

Slots = Upload limit set by the user.

E.g. if I put 3, only 3 people can leech from me at any 1 time. The rest will have to wait for the 3 people to finish.

For UL : Go to File > Settings. Under the General tab, got that option on Line speed for uploading. Set on whatever speed you want. I have 20Mbps and I set mine around 10Mbps.

For DL : I am not sure but I do think that it is AUTO? Can't find the settings anywhere.

finally worked, encountered a couple of problems but either one of the solutions below seemed to have "rebooted" the connection

1. Set UPNP to active - in which case no need to do manual port fowarding
2. used the tried and true method of "switch everything off and switch it on again" this includes the GPON, VLAN bridge and router
3. Set slots to more than 3 - if you have multiple downloads and uploads each count as a slot, even when you are retrieving the file list.

Up and running now for more than 48Hrs! woo hoo - happy downloading guys

I can only seem to connect to certain users in the hub. Why is that? Seems not all can grab from me too. I have manual port mapping done for TCP and UDP.

SOLVED (I think):
TLS/TCP port need to be port forwarded too and need to be different than the one used for TCP/UDP. I used 5800 for TCP/UDP and 5801 for TLS/TCP.

Is there a user banlist that we can utilize in order to prevent certain users from downloading from us?

Addendum:
I'm interested to know so that those that I've identified as serial leechers that do not reshare the stuffs they've downloaded back to the hub won't be given slots anymore.

anyway for me to configure my client so that peers/leechers that share -20% of my total share can only download..

eg i share 1tb.. only those sharing abt 800gb and above can download from me while the rest and go f*** off... ??

or is it possible to make it so that those that join the hub share a min of 500gb some are sharing less than 100gb and i feel thats ridiculous

Configure your port forwarding. I think the 1st page should have a guide on how to do it.

TCP/TLS port , some users forced the connection to go through encrypted channels..

if tcp/tls port clash with ur tcp port.. then sometimes you can't get the filelist or the files...

if your doing manual portforward why you screenshot shows ur using upnp ?
why you didnt put the portforward and choose manual with portforward ???

the tcp and udp can use the same port.. but tcp/tls must be another tcp port...

Guys, a noob needs help here. All my files are on NAS. DNS-323 to be specific. How do I do get those stuff on page 1 to work on that NAS? Applied for unifi but not yet installed. Just want to prep up things while waiting for the install. Also can't afford to run PC 24/7

@canary I've never used an NAS before but it really should depend on your NAS operating system. If you use can update your NAS connect to the hub then I don't think you will have a problem.

There's no way, unless you get a really fast pc + hdd, then indexing will be faster.

I will be rehashing 6TB of data when I get my 4U casing... cry.gif

I just click the minimise icon on the top right of the window. If it doesn't minimise to taskbar for you, you'll have to go into the File -> Option/Settings/Preferences and control the minimise behaviour from there. Once configured, minimise will automatically go to the taskbar instead of the process tray

There is a Mac client recommendation somewhere in this thread. I can't remember where but I think you can search the thread to find it.

If you wanna check the hashing, it depends on the client you are using. If the client is the 1 most of us are using then it should be right at the bottom of the window.

I have tons of.. *mayhem* to share.. smile.gif

But before I share them... or connect to them...

Please answer my questions:-
1. This (184.82.41.12/hub.athena.my) Are you hosting this server from home? or you paying it for the server?

2. If you are hosting it from your home, whats your internet speed? likewise, if you are paying a 3rd party vendor to host this DC++ server, how much you're paying it?

I have read it! lol... I brag Im ProIT? err.. It's not bragging my friend. It's just a "saying".
Bragging is telling everyone "Im Pro IT" all over again and again repetitively. That is Bragging!

Let me clear the air. Im just IT-knowledgable,and I did read the first page.

My only concern is "where would it be hosted". That's all to it. Hope someone could answer my question, so that I know how/where it is hosted. And izzit payable? or hosted at home?

=)

Why asking this question? Because I want to know whether if I could pay a small Paypal donation, for the server to be hosted for a long time, for unifi users..

or IF hosted at home, at least I know how fast the hoster connection is. smile.gif

The hub is hosted on a Linux VPS. It only goes down when my provider restarts the VM host (once every 2 months~) or has datacenter issues. It doesn't cost me much to keep running so I don't mind keeping it up for a long time. If I do want to stop hosting it at some point, I'll offer the domain (hub.athena.my) to another LYN member if they wanna keep it running.

@lumix

It takes about 1-2 minutes for your client to timeout from the hub if your TCP connection gets broken. Just chill for a bit and you should be able to reconnect after that period.

Yup. So if I'm uploading at 250KB/s, when you download from me, it will be only at 250KB/s because my line limit is 5Mbps

Hey, I got unifi, and now uploading series. I did not do any port forwarding, and I am using the Tp-Link substitute.

If I can choose selected files to share does that mean I have successfully setup the thing? Or I still need to do port forwarding?

Try double click users to download their file list. If you can download then it should be fine. If you can't, probably your client not able to create port mapping. Check under File > Settings > Connections settings. Choose what best for your setup.

Actually I don't need anything from you now. Just over the long weekend I wanted to do a specific movie to marathon with friends and only lumix and you have that version.

But thanks for the offer. I will take you up on it when my friction burns recover tongue.gif
Don't worry about sharing. I always share everything I d/l. Its just that I'm not always online. Weekend definitely on though.

HOR!!! You sure its just that 1 only ka? Ayam not convinced

Also, for those who download from me, I apologize if your speeds are sometimes throttled. When I'm working on my pet projects or playing LOTRO, I have to limit the speeds.

That's correct, I'm using an external hard drive as well , you need to plug it then start your client, when you done exit the client and unplug the external hd.

It's better to use an external hd such as a Mybook cuz it can enter to sleep mode and start automatically, I'm using an old wd portable and it's freaking hot after a few hours.

I concur. Yesterday somebody login and sapu my "Exactly what you think it is" folder, then terus run away. I no time sapu his/her "Exactly what you think it is" folder also.

Prasys, as a responsible staff of LYN, you have to be sharing on the hub 24/7.

There is no way, from the client itself, to upload anything into your computer. If you are not referring to the client, then yes, its possible. Although I wouldn't know how. This sort of thing you gotta ask those sifu like Rizzy, Jinxx, sohli or anybody else I may have missed.
