definitely a camera for anyone who's interested in photography...its light and sleek... like the black one... but i think its surface is quite a fingerprint magnet...

its a camera even full-time photogs would carry around...as a replacement for their actual slr...

intending to get one... then i don't have to drag my gears everywhere i go.... hahhaa

Actually to my suprise, The black surface is matte & thus anti-fingerprint.

The red & white yes bcos of the shining surface but not the black..check the black matte:

the black one is really nice to hold cos of the surface. biggrin.gif

i tested it during the IXUS 300HS event but cannot release photo cos that time not released yet (it was in May).

the fish eye mode is fun to make fun of others. try also that miniature mode, you can set the amount of area to blur out so you blur out kau kau to get a tilt-shift / macro lens kind of effect.

I can't said it's better..probably comparanble...Although able to shoot at F/2 which is the best right now on all compact series similar to LX3 & S90, but the actual sensor size (300hs =1/2.3) is still smaller than S90 (1/1.7) & LX3 (1/1,63). However the smaller sensor size compensated wth the latest & only Canon HS (high Sensitivuty sensor) back-illuminated (I think almost similar to Sony exmor R sensor kua hmm.gif )

The back-illuminated sensor uses a reversed internal design which puts the circuitry behind the photoreceptors rather than in front, and the result is greater sensitivity and, according to Canon, less noise

Although wth smaller than LX3 & S90 sensor, I decided on this to LX3 & S90 bcos:

-Attracted to the HD video cam wth superb slow motion ..hehe not yet try (S90 no HD video wor)
-The size which is smaller than both S90 & LX3
-Additional modes which I dun think S90/LX3 have (I might be wrong here) such as Fisheye & Miniature (taking a human using this damn chun wan rclxms.gif ),
- The Canon version of back-illuminated sensor similar to Sony latest TX series.. smile.gif

the fish-eye mode you can go do like those puppy with nose magnified kind of shot. tongue.gif i cannot post my "puppy" fish-eye face though. haha.

it's a fun compact go go around with. the only thing i wish for it to have is to be wider. the Ixus 210 can go wider and has more MP.

yup, it can!

to get the best out of it la, shoot at a subject that it's of further distance and from a higher angle, then blur out the top and bottom (adjustable via menu).

so let's say you're on 2nd floor of the building, you shoot downwards at say someone crossing the road, then bokeh out the top and bottoms. biggrin.gif voila straight macro / miniature / TS lens effect!

yeah, I think the selling point will be the smaller size... hopefully the noise level equal to LX3 at least..

also, it can zoom more than LX3..right?

I was actually looking at this camera the past few days coz I was attracted to the bright red color fella. In the end I still wanted a small camera with big mama sensor inside. No point getting another small sensor cam. I wanted wide, I wanted high ISO, I wanted bokeh. Hehehe.

Nice pictures. Nice feature, good form factor, good sensor. If got x10 zoom and 24 or 25mm wide angle, then sure king of all APS compact cameras already.

The LX3 oso f2 but there's absolutely no bokeh 1. All the bokeh u see in stimix's pics here also fake 1. He's using the Miniature mode or right up close to subject in Macro. Normal shots with these small compacts is not gonna give u any bokeh at all.

Ya lor, that's y I'm telling the fella not to expect any real bokeh even with f2 lens. These compact cams have such puny sensors, f2 lens only gives more shutter speed, bokeh is non existent.

bokeh is overated.

Although the bokeh by 300HS is fake, as long as it give a good bokeh, who cares its fake or real? LX3 and S90 cannot do it. 300HS.

300HS win...lolz

300HS > LX3 > S90

A great camera. Definitely. Love the color swap/accent. F2!! Fisheye and miniature!

Color swap. Switch the desired color to another. Make all red become white (almost all)

color accent. Leaving only one desired color visible while the rest is desaturated.

F2. For low lighting only when it's on the widest focal, good for party shots and events.

Slow motion!!!!! And so many more but these are some of the features making me want it. They have high fps too but that's when it's on a smaller mp.

Confirmed 300HS is the best camera in the world now:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD40...l/dp/B003L77Y5S

QUOTE
I purchased this over the acclaimed S90 and glad I did. Ultimately, I decided to wait on this camera in lieu of purchasing the S90 due to the video features and low light capabilities. It the past, it's the low light abilities of a camera that really separates one camera from another (while retaining detail / minimizing noise)

Naturally these are main features along with the fast lens across all optical zoom levels as well as a decent wide angle (28mm equivalent).

I already own a Canon 7D and 20D so wasn't concerned about RAW capabilities. I ultimately wanted a very compact, highly versatile camera that I could take everywhere. This camera accomplishes all of that and then some.

PROS:

-Low light shooting exceeds expectations. Slightly better than average noise for low lighting shooting.

-HD video shooting in 720P exceeded expectations as well. It is so good that I will probably use it more than my Canon 7D due to the ease of HD shooting. Allows zooming (optical and digital) and macro while shooting.

-240 fps / shooting is a lot of fun. Definitely low resolution is very noticable and subject to amount of light in terms of quality, but can still shoot fun videos in somewhat lower light conditions. I use it to capture our dogs playing and chasing after toys. A very fun option to have in a camera and icing on the cake.

-Fantastic macro. I was wondering about the macro as there was little information available. Be rest assured this macro is great.

-Build quality is great. The black matte is solid feeling in the hand and has a slight "rough" texture that makes it easy to hold and hopefully wear easier.

-When zooming out in picture-preview mode, the camera previews 130 pictures on the screen at once! Very cool.

-Small / light enough to pocket it easily ... even in a shirt pocket.

-Beautiful 3" LCD viewing screen. One of the best ones I've seen.

-Very intuitive controls. Takes a tad to get used to them (especially after using SLR cameras), but once you use them, they are a breeze to navigate and control. Amazed by the versatility of the simple layout / controls.

Just a user comment lah...Kenot 100% take his words unless he hv tried S90/LX3 kua....

Here another better & pro review:

QUOTE
sd4000 owner .

just picked one of these up today in black
nice finish on it not slippery kinda a grippy feel to it.

I am a photographer for a living and also have a post production company and do a lot of PS work for other pro photographers

my pro gear is to heavy and big to haul around daily so I have a Olympus Pen the e-pl1 to be exact and love it great small camera that fits in my baggy cargo short pockets or a messenger bag etc..
but to big for surf short pocket or wife purse
our old P&S died on us so time to get a new P&S camera
other true pocket P&S I have owned that compare wont got into older cameras
canon SD500 Canon SD870 DMC-ZS3 (SD3500 but returned it right away)

what I wanted in a camera for my wife ?
easy to use and small and light to carry along with great video and good pics ! nothing compares to a pro camera like a 1D model of current variety or a 5D of current variety with L glass so I can be picky but also can be real this is why I have a pen camera ? blows away a P&S like the S90 etc.. when it really comes down to turning everything off but the size is not portable

so was also loooking at the panny ZS7 and the sony DSC-HX5
but from owning a Panny while they are popular I did not like the noise or how the noise was handled ? just looked to blotchy for me so comparing the ZS3 to the ZS7 things looked close enough that after owning a ZS3 I wont own another panny ? just dont like the image quality
want to clarify something
NO P&S is good to me so its a give and take in quality and overall appearance so its a choose the one you like ! others love the panny I did not ? nobody is wrong or right its a personal choice so those panny lovers I am glad you are happy dont take it as a panny bash take it as a hardened pro shooter who wishes for to much !
and really it comes down to features and what you like the latest P&S I got down to are all good and all seem to have choices of what you want each one has something the others do not
yes I wish I could combine them in a perfect package but this is the real world so I say choose one be happy and enjoy

the sony I played with in the store but also looked at the samples here and many other real world samples and just did not care for the way it smashed some colors but I did love some of the features ! like the pano mode and the twilight mode teh video samples I have seen are not the best though ? strange coming from sony ?
I think I would have been happier with the Sony over the panny though ?

so why the SD4000 ? I am used to canon they build nice P&S across the board the video is nice and the pics are nice I would prefer a touch soft but hold detail and not smash it up over smashed up over processed details so the image quality is what sold me and the 2.0 lens !!!! this is the one thing the others did not have

things I wish it had GPS the twilight and pano mode of the sony

so I guess show me a camera that shoots good HD video that has a 2.0 lens that can fit in your pants pocket or wifes purse ?
and when it comes down to getting the shot I would take that 2.0 over the pano mode which is a fun thing but would not use it as much the twilight mode ? cool but chances are I wont be in that situation with this camera

the 2.0 with the video is very nice to have

so that is my reasoning why the camera ?

quality of the image I feel is good for a P&S and its better than the other cameras I have owned but no where near the pen so I am lucky I can carry a pen or my pro gear and this can be with the wife in her purse so we truly have it every day
if we go out for the day with the kids I will take the pen so we are covered ! if we go to shoot some stuff I can take my pro gear so I might be in a unique position

I will have to get more time with this before I know how it handles but from one night playing with it ? seems decent ? dont know how it will work with the kids this is where the pen sucks they are not quick cameras in the focus area ! but the images when on are very nice for a smaller package then a DSLR

How does this camera compares with the Sony TX-7 and WX1? I'm getting a 300HS in a couple of days and just wanted to know how it fares against other CMOS sensor P&S..

Sony is one of the 1st using this new tech of High sensitive back lighted CMOS or their trade marked 'Exmor-R" sensor"..Canon abit late lor & this 300HS is Canon 1st using their so called "Back illuminated" HS sensor. I think same tech-lah where the wiring is at the back of sensor compare wth the conventional type where sensor located fronting the sensor thus less light coming in.

However, TX5/TX7 & WX1 is using smaller apperture size compare to 300HS i.e 1/2.4 only..haha on'y 0.1 nia lah..haha

TX5 was my choice earlier b4 testing at the shop & glued on Canon 300HS. The diff wth TX7 & TX5 is only TX7 ability of 1080 videocam & TX5 just like 300HS - 720p. However TX 5 can dive & battery will not kaput below freezing temp.

There are pros & cons...Just goto any shops & compare & u decide urself. I kinda like TX5 bcos of weather proof & also superior macro level at 1CM nia compare to 300HS at 3cm. & also the panorama function which Canon 300HS dun have..

However after trying on some macro, dark room & auto mode + the manual apperture & shutter speed..This TX5/TX7 can't do that..100% auto & always give wrong shooting..haizzz...Sumore dun have the fisheye, miniature, accent & swap colour mode that Canon having...so me choose Canon 300HS lor.. rclxms.gif

hi guys, i'm in the middle of deciding which to buy.. this 300HS and the canon s90.

seems like 300hs has more features, but it lacks manual mode which s90 has. can anyone tell me if this would make a big difference?

Thanks alot stimix.. Really helpful info u have there.. Will test both brands later..

Had my eyes glued to the 300HS already and somehow cant find reasons to like the sony, eventhough cheaper(WX1) and smaller? Guess i will follow my instinct and get the 300HS.. biggrin.gif

One more thing, hows the battery life of the 300HS?

Battery life is rated at 250 shots per charge but I think I got lower than this bcos keeps playing wth it..Already on my 2nd charge right now haha & not even 200 shots.

skyrock 300HS although dun hv the 100% manual but having the manual Apperture setting where you can adjust the F number & also Shutter speed where you can adjust how long the shutter gonna close...Both good for me dy.. I also consider S90 but due to the dull look & also no HD video recording turn me off although knowing it having bigger len which is compensated wth the latest tech of backlit CMOS sensor similar to soy tx exmor-r

Ok. Brought liao. tongue.gif Not much color to choose. Only red, white and black. The red is dam plastically. It maybe cause by the shinning surface I guess. I choose the white.

Price camera only - RM1200.
Screen protector - RM20
SDHC 16Gb CL10 - RM159
Camera bag - RM15
Total - RM1394.

Those accessory brought from LYP. Still cheaper than their offer package which throw in 4gb SDHC and a leather bag. The original leather bag is damn ugly. sad.gif Really not suit to this camera design.

i know that this camera can take good picture in low lighting condition but most of the review I've read so far tested the camera on a tripod.
Just wondering how's the quality of handheld low light image of this camera? It is comparable to those handheld twilight shots by Sony TX5, TX7 ?

300HS have few feature more than SD3500. But still depend on your shooting style and habit. If you like everything auto, nothing much different.

300HS have less pixel than SD3500. That is good with small camera. Too much pixel is bad for small camera.

I tested both b4 getting this..For sure Canon much better-lah..You can check my nite shooting on previous page.. biggrin.gif all without tripod. Canon having bigger sensor size compare to TX5/7. But there's few features Sony have but not canon such as swipe panorama & all the weather proof fearures of TX5.. smile.gif

Did you guys found out that when using smart auto mode, this camera seems to have the tendency to choose a higher ISO most of the time? blink.gif
In the end i have to switch to shooting mode to choose a lower ISO.

I seldom use the smart auto function biggrin.gif Anyway even at higher ISO, this backlite cmos sensor still can capture noise free images up to ISO 1600 smile.gif My only dislike using Auto mode - you can't tweak the colour to vivid. (Well I think)

To shot in low light, normally I choose F and speed priority over ISO in manual mode. Either tripod or handheld. Unless I have no choice.

I don't like to shot in high ISO. The noise make the picture look teribble. Mostly I limit it max ISO400.

This is indirectly to produce less noise.

ISO400 is pretty much the limit for all of us compact users here nod.gif Be it LX3,S90,G11 or 300HS .

But resizing it to about 800x600 does "reduce" the noise considerably but you pixel peep, it's a whole different story tongue.gif

Oh ya and having a f/2.0 lens does help out with higher shutter speed or lower ISO but doesn't at all produce "real bokeh" due to the puny sensor

I got a myself a unit last week but haven't had the time to really use and explore the camera. Being a compact, i wasn't expecting much initially. But i have to say i'm impressed with the camera's ability to take pictures in the dark, and without flash. The f/2 and backlighted lens really helps i guess..

I saw the announcement of the sd4500 and was tempted. I really miss a longer zoom range. I've come to appreciate the 2.0 aperture for taking photos in low light. However, the aperture size quickly gets smaller when zooming so it's most effective in low light at 2.0.

The 28mm wide angle is certainly nice but I could live without it.

Realizing the pros and cons, get the one with the features you use most. It it's wide angle/low light, the sd4000 makes sense. If it's outside in good light and you want to zoom in, the sd4500 may be a better choice.

Full discussion is here
SD4500 vs SD4000 (FYI, SD4000=300HS, SD4500=1000HS)

F is your eye iris which at night will open bigger. The lower the figure, the wider iris open.

You have alot of zoom, but higher f will make you difficult shot picture.

Those super-zoom camera is good for those wanna captire faraway object but one thing for sure after my dissapointment wth my older Lumix 10X zoom...worst ever picture quality.

The higher F value already hinting something bad. You will not be getting F2 and wth small sensor...Nevertheless, the 1 cm macro really a suprise

Mostly those camera with super duper spec in a small body won't give good quality picture. The most common example is pixel. With clamping alot of pixel in a compact camera will produce a shit picture. My office have this kind of camera which 10M pixel. The picture look shit and my 6M pixel camera is much much more better.

I would choose wider lens than zoom lens. I can overcome the zoom picture by croping the picture in a software with come with the camera purchase. 10M pixel can crop alot without scarify the quality. Makesure your hand don't shake alot. While wide lens is good for indoor, group people and small space. I can't modify the picturet in software. Accept I walk few feet more behind to take the picture. Wider lens is more common use.

You zoom to max, but the camera tell you, need open flash and not stable because high F and enable lower down. The picture look shit too. Otherwise use tripod which you're not willing to bring along to holiday. Try check those DSLR lens that can zoom 300-400mm and F1.8 cost how much.

If you in compact camera, choose the spec is most common use. That you able to shot without the camera tell you can't shot. Otherwise go for DSLR.

Anyway, I suspect some typo in this 1000HS max f3.4 which a bit high. At least f2.7 can give kua?

Hi Stimix, Ozak:

Thanks for the advise... Than mostly I will go for 300HS instead of 1000HS... heheh...

What Stimix mentioned is true, I also surprised that 1000HS can give 1 cm macro!! Furthermore movie resolution can up to 1920 compare to 1280 that 300HS can offer.. =.=!

Well, i'm guessing you were shooting at low light? Most compacts don't fare well at low light situations

And there is more to just MegaPixels which affects Picture Quality.Too many factors to consider such as lens quality, built in processor, sensor type/quality,settings such as aperture, shutter speed,ISO performance, built in Noise reduction which will either balance out the detail:noise ratio or just bluntly go for pure NR(in the case of G11), built in Optical Image Stabilisation(different manufacturers have different terms for this)

So blaming picture quality solely on the amount of Megapixels isn't fair. There are other factors to consider too smile.gif

Agree on this.Wide angle lens is very desirable on compacts drool.gif

It's like that.Superzooms or compacts with high zoom range will have a significantly higher F value to cover the whole range eh smile.gif

And picture quality/details/sharpness will therefore be compromised through out the focal length because of the huge range there smile.gif

Don't think there are any 300-400mm f/1.8 in the market now.Perhaps i remember a 300mm F2.0 from Sony or Olympus? hmm.gif Would probably cost Rm20K anyway tongue.gif

Sometimes you gotta understand the limitations and compromise of a superzoom. It's technically harder to produce a high zoom range lens with very wide aperture.Even DSLRs don't have those lenses sweat.gif Oh wai, got 300mm f/2 but need to pay Rm20k tongue.gif

Not just me. Able shoot at low light is an advantange for most of the user. Who don't want just takeout the camera and shot without all the warning telling you cannot shot from the camera.

Pixel is just one of the example I m given. Of course still got many cause that given bad quality picture. Pixel is a most common misleading for noob people who think higher is better.

I don't follow much of DSLR equipment anymore. It just an example this kind of spec telephoto lens cost a boom. But hope 1 day some maker can create one. smile.gif Maybe cost a waja!

Of course I understand the difficulty of technical to produce 1. And clamping all super duper spec in small body will not produce good picture. And worst, maybe the camera cannot last long.

You need to think as normal people what is best camera for them. Using an expert and DSLR mind will make them more difficult to own a camera.Just suggest some most common spec and day to day use is best for them. DSLR is the next level.

I realised that my 300HS tends to have this inconsistent focusing problem. Sometimes when youre in the rush, pictures come out all blurry. Is this due to the f2.0 aperture or am i focusing at the wrong places? hmm.gif

Getting a blur image is because your camera used a slow shutter speed to compensate for the lack of exposure due to low light.Either this or the camera bumps up the ISO and you'll get noisy images. That's only if you're using fully Auto la

Using a manual PnS like the 300HS enables you to fully take control of the camera's shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings to your desire. You can freeze water drops or take a long exposure of a night scene, produce "bokeh" or stunning landscapes with great depth of field.Everything is within your control!

That's why manual PnS are so desirable nowadays brows.gif

Hi, how does it compare with LX3? LX3 has a larger of image sensor size, in theory the noise and light should get a better control than 300HS. So how about in the reality? and tone of the color?

Really have to compare side by side haha. Yes, LX3 sensor even bigger than S90. To compensate smaller sensor size, 300HS is using a totally diff tech i.e backlite illuminated sensor. Meaning of all the wiring fronting the sensor as in LX3/S90, 300HS wiring is located behind the sensor and thus more light & less noises.

I didn't compare before. So I not sure what is the quality.

I have molest the s90 before during brought the 300HS. Judge from the outlook of s90, I rather buy 300HS or LX3. The look of the s90 not stylish and dull. shakehead.gif

Read back few page lah. Brought after kena stimix poison.

Brought for my gf. Judge from her look, she like it alot. So should be ok kua. hmm.gif

For me a bit difficult handling. Cause small body with my big palm. And I have to handling carefully with the white color body. Worry scratch easly. sweat.gif I m a rough handling guy. My own camera many scratch and dirty. sad.gif

I find it abit troublesome to go in menu if I want fast switching to others mode picture taken. You have to switch and enter into many step before you can take the picture mode you want. I use to like DSLR type switching which faster. But that would be alot of button outside.

Any kind will do. As long as above class 4 or same. Follow your budget.

Of course higher is better.

Still ok lah the price. You already get a good price liau. Balgat brought without the memory card.

If taking video without stopping in the middle, the memory card speed should be ok. If just taking photo, doesn't matter at all.

I think your price is ok.

since mine;

camera+screen - 1220
1 sandisk 8gb class 4 - 55
1 leather case - ?

I think class 4 is enough for me as data transfer speed is 4mb/sec. Usually I'm using video recording for a short clip. Class 4 is enough for 720p but you'll need class 6 for 1080p to handle the bandwidth.

I choose class 10 16gb for this camera. Cause I worry for the high speed video taken.

But later find out that the taken high speed video is temporary store in the internal memory. And than transfer to memory card. That's why limited to 29sec shot.

Ok lah. It between my budget which cost RM159. Normally if the manual write using min cl4 or cl6, I will buy 1 cl higher. Just for incase.

The writting speed is really fast. After taken high speed video, you can see the light just flash for 1sec and it done. Ready to shot another video.

Becarefull with those non brand. Any sticker can stick on it. You don't no what cl it is and what size is it.

If they offer me package with this kind of memory card, I will reject. And just take the camera.

But use it later for camera on my holiday. But same problem. Hit up an spoil after take some shot. This time even worst. The camera also spoil. Cannot power up at all.

yes can get below RM1100 from this guy but according to him the warranty is only 1 year and need to refer back to him if u wanna claim it.
I think for the lelong one is same with 1 year warranty.

Damn the S95. sad.gif
I can't wait to get it in Singapore so just got myself the White Devil 300 HS and four extra batteries for RM1220. At least here it came with 3 years warranty. Beautiful and sexy little thing... smile.gif
Will exclusively use this camera for my trip to Bali (5 days 4 nights), if this little thing gives me trouble, will throw it in the sea before coming back... wink.gif
First time traveling without my twin 5DII... Huhuhu...

With four extra battery just RM1220? It really a bargain. One original battery already cost rm180. sweat.gif

What so great about s95? I check the spec is about the same with 300HS. And the s95 is not sexy at all.

Just got myself the Octopus copy x4 (RM35 each), will never pay for the original one. Stupid price for simple battery... shakehead.gif
S95 has a bigger sensor so low light photography will give a cleaner image quality.
