Bit the bullet today and got the POHD from LY. Just no budget to buy Wifi adapter and HDD...that one next month lor...
Playing around with it now. PQ is much better than the facility at the LCD TV.

I had always wondered how it compares to a direct TV plug in, so, good to know.

I'll say the same for my BD player that play mkv files - output is not as good as the ACRyan.

So, two more happy ACR owners! thumbup.gif

I've been having fun for almost a year now, still haven't got enough of it. tongue.gif

My main purpose was actually to use this box as a hifi music jukebox and it'll be connected to my stereo hifi system. In the near future, I intend to buy a few terrabytes of HDD and rip a great number of my CD albums uncompressed into the HDD.
I also bought a HDMI to DVI cable (cheapest I could find) to hook up my Sammy 20" LCD monitor for browsing through the music files. Testing it now and am so glad my Sammy monitor have display from this box. NO problem so far.
Since its got a digital coaxial output, I'm going to patch it to my hifi DAC and music goes through the tube amps. So this box ultimately becomes a jukebox or HDD music server?
Then sit back and listen to my digital music from this box. No need to change CD discs like before. I think my trusty CD player will become a secondary music source. For movies, I'll depend on my TV USB feature which can play dvix, avi, mkv files...not very fussy about that for now.

Meanwhile, I'm looking to DIY build a better low noise and ripple high current 12VDC PSU for this POHD. I know this ain't going to come cheap as it must be able to deliver at least 3amps peak DC current. I read somewhere some people are using a custom PSU and claim it lift the performance to some degree. The existing wall wart is a cheap nasty switching PSU. Switching PSU's are usually noisy stuff and does affect sound quality to some degree in hifi expectations. Oh well...I'm planning for it in due course.

Sorry, this is a new area for me but I'm very curious...

After ripping, you won't get the same quality as the CDs, no?

I have only converted CDs to MP3 - they don't sound that good even on a good hifi.

What are the better ways? Or you mean just copy wholesale?

What I've said earlier is all a total objective since my set is hardly half a day old, getting familiar with it, and also some burn-in test that its all in good working order for a long time to come.
Yes, I'm going to rip the CD's album by album without any down conversion or compression to mp3's, not even flac.
I'll probably rip them to ISO format. All this is also somewhat a first for me as I've never done this before.
I'll take it a step at a time to realise my objective in due course. Till then, I'll have some fun with it watching various oldie, rare, not the mainstream type movies I have in mkv and avi format. I just may also rip all my collection of DVD for future viewing. Woooo!... my external DVD writer is going to do a lot of hardwork very soon. tongue.gif
Yes.. I'm now realizing my mkv movies are displaying better PQ than through the TV USB feature. I'm beginning to believe my TV USB decoder engine isn't really top quality but rather a good convenience and alternative provided for in today's LCD TV.

Bookmark this website and you'd find everything about firmware updates here.

http://www.acryan.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=44

I wonder if Asian firmware is all about more Asian language feature than EU or US firmware.
I found out the box cannot support any ripped WMA audio files. Its supposed to play AFAIK.
I opened the bottom cover to have a look at the PCB closely. Quality just acceptable and no better than any VGA card. Bare minimum acceptable quality, but I do like the box build very much. The factory installed version firmware is printed on the EPROM chip at the PCB.
If not mistaken the sound output is serviced by a el cheapo jelly bean 4558 opamp. Hahahah...audio modders will insist on swapping this for something better. 4558 opamp sound is mediocre and just do the job. Thats why I've another audiophile DAC which is planned to be used in due course.

Go to ACRyan website - tech support - you'll see the links to download the right file and instructions to update your firmware.
First check in the ACR under "system" to verify if your firmware version is up to date or not.

Hi Bro, beside the quality, AC Ryan Wifi is 300Mbps and 1 transmission, 2 receiving. So, for wifi N, the best is 2 transmission and 2 receiving. The cheapest is 1 transmission and 1 receiving. Hope u can understand the price different due to this technical inside different.

Funny no-one answer me regarding playing wma files. Even my ori myvi player can play these no problem.
BTW, I'm thinking twice about the internet feed to the box. Not very interesting content, don't even have Youtube, even the internet radio is mostly foreign content (Romanian????)
I think I'll change my mind and get the one for the LCD TV, can Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, AlJazerra news.
