Hi guys, noob new. Been reading a bit on the AC Ryan threads, thought I can get some help here...

I have:

1. POHD RTD1073DD r3582 1.5TB builtin HDD connected this way:
POHD HDMI to FullHD LCDTV
POHD coaxial digital audio to AVR (old one, no HDMI) 5.1

2. POHD Mini RTD1073DD C+ r3582 2TB ext HDD connected this way:
POHD HDMI to AVR (new) 5.1 to FullHD LCDTV

I have this TV flickering problem with setup1. Sometimes, it flickers and return to normal; sometimes it flickers and TV screen stays blank. I have tried changing things around, but results were:

- POHD mini does not have the coaxial audio output, not used in setup1, problem does not arise
- switching on POHD or TV first does not make a difference
- using different HDMI cables appear to make some difference but problem does not go away
- toggling audio settings between passthrough and SPDIF seem not to make a difference

Where might the problem be? The use of the coaxial audio? TV? Anything I can do?

In addition, what is the "DVD" option for in the menu after browser?

Thanks a million!

What's you Setup 1 Video settings in your POHD setup menu? HDMI Auto  or HDMI 1080i / 1080P ? If it's auto try changing to fixed resolution or vise versa, see if it helps.

DVD Menu is for displaying the DVD Menu when you are playing a DVD movie (same Menu you see when playing a DVD Disc in a DVD player). (Provided you have copied or ripped the whole DVD contents intact to your HDD).

Thanks for response.

I tried various video settings - HDMI auto, HDMI 1080p/50Hz, 1080p/60Hz - doesn't help with the TV flickering.

DVD menu - how to use it? Say I have a copied DVD folder in the HDD. I usually go to USB, select folder, play folder - it'll work like a DVD. How would that be different using "DVD" and not "USB"?

The DVD option that you were referring to in the Browser screen  is for you to connect an external USB DVD drive to play DVD discs. You have to select that option instead of USB option when you want to play a DVD disc.

As for your HDMI problem, Why not just try the other modes as well 1080i/720P etc. since you are already at it. After that try connecting to another HDMI port on your TV. You might also want to try adjusting your TV options or maybe even try a differnt FW version.
*
Again, thanks for help.

So, that DVD option is meant for special DVD players with USB output? Normal DVD/BD players won't have this, right?

Will play around a bit more to see if I can pinpoint the problem. I now strongly suspect the TV not able to catch up with the changing signals direct from the POHD. The TV is 2 years old, 100Hz. This problem doesn't show up if the POHD is connected via HDMI to AVR first. I guess the AVR does a good job in handling the signals. Maybe just wait for the old AVR w/o HDMI to kaput, get new one!! biggrin.gif

Anyway, I am one happy POHD owner. One of the lowest cost gadgets I ever bought that gives such great pleasures!! thumbup.gif

Added on November 14, 2010, 4:42 pmA question asking on behalf of a fren...

The ACRyan DVR... can it record Astro BYond stuff? Will it be 1080i Dolby 5.1?

Thanks!

It's meant for those computer External DVD USB drives, the kind you plug in your laptop using USB power.

I think the AC Ryan DVR can only record through composite cable (the Yellow/white/red cable). Tell your friend don't get his hopes high biggrin.gif. Ask him to check with the seller first.

I see... those drives that burn backups... got it.

About DVR-BYond, will see if he finds something different.

Thanks, you have been most helpful.

i dled 2 mkv movie but unable to play on it. only got sound and subtitle.
i clicked on the info button at the remote, the movie column shown unknown.
but it play perfectly with my pc /laptop .
found my answer to the above question. but i got bigger problem now.
i tried to update the firmware as stated to support the mkv files, but the screen didnt move after 30 mins.
decided to power it off, now it hang at the opening screen with the acryan word with no blue light from the power button.
cant find any hard reset button. anyone can help?
totally frustrated with this player. if need to send for repair, i probably will jump ship to save the hassle.
What was the reason you found for the first problem? Common, I think since there are some "strange" files on net...

Did not fully follow the instructions during firmware upgrade? Or applied a wrong version? hmm.gif

If new, best take it back to the shop...

See if you will find my input useful...

I have both POHD and POHDmini. I first bought the POHD with a 1.5TB built in HDD. Very satisfied, Then I realised I keep unplugging and plugging TV1-PC-TV2-TV1! I have yet to do the wireless or NAS thing which I know little about...

I then decided to buy a Mini too since the price was good and an ext 2TB was very good priced too - so that I swap around less.

I also have a portable 500GB HDD now to transfer files from PC, from frens, etc. The file copy feature in the POHD and mini is very useful since a PC will not be required.

In summary, if you will not be keeping a lot of files, better go for the Mini + portable HDD. If you plan to keep lots of files, then a POHD w/built in HDD + portable HDD will be best. A matter of $ too!

Bear in mind the best files are >10GB so a 500 GB HDD can only store 40-50 of them.

If that's the case, might as well I go for mini since I only use external Hdd.
Can the mini support 2.5" hdd of 1TB or 2TB++ near future?
I always get the 2.5" version rather then 3.5" is so bulky  sweat.gif
*
Mini can support 2.5" or 3.5", no problem. Playback, no noticeable difference.
The 2.5" is handy since it does not require ext power, but is limited to 500GB (1TB is costly now); file transfer is slower.
The 3.5" needs ext power but is economical, say RM400/2TB = 20sen per GB.

The mini is half the size and weighs 1/4 of the regular (w/HDD inside).

You will like it. Assuming your TV is FullHD, 480p mkv is better than normal TV and some DVDs; 720p mkv equivalent to Astro BYond 1080i; 1080p mkv is superb, as good as a BluRay disc.
Just make you do the settings properly!

Enjoy! thumbup.gif

Now, I'm logging off to watch my shows. biggrin.gif

Honestly, as far as the video is concerned, I can only give BD the benefit of doubt as I can't really tell the difference most of the time for 1080p. Only when I compared them with AVATAR could I notice a slight superiority with the BD.

As for audio, BD wins for sure with DTS HD-MA. thumbup.gif

Some people say some movies esp older ones are really only 720p on BD so they are not superior to the corresponding media files. Do you agree with this?

Bit the bullet today and got the POHD from LY. Just no budget to buy Wifi adapter and HDD...that one next month lor...
Playing around with it now. PQ is much better than the facility at the LCD TV.

I had always wondered how it compares to a direct TV plug in, so, good to know.

I'll say the same for my BD player that play mkv files - output is not as good as the ACRyan.

So, two more happy ACR owners! thumbup.gif

I've been having fun for almost a year now, still haven't got enough of it. tongue.gif

My main purpose was actually to use this box as a hifi music jukebox and it'll be connected to my stereo hifi system. In the near future, I intend to buy a few terrabytes of HDD and rip a great number of my CD albums uncompressed into the HDD.

Sorry, this is a new area for me but I'm very curious...

After ripping, you won't get the same quality as the CDs, no?

I have only converted CDs to MP3 - they don't sound that good even on a good hifi.

What are the better ways? Or you mean just copy wholesale?

I am very happy with a.c.ryan. Very easy and user friendly hehe

Go to ACRyan website - tech support - you'll see the links to download the right file and instructions to update your firmware.
First check in the ACR under "system" to verify if your firmware version is up to date or not.

Ok, forgot to ask this questions. We have 2 usb ports. Can the usb port support external dvd?

As explained by someone recently, any of the port can be used with an optical DVD reader, not a DVD player.

About heating... my POHD with builtin HDD does not get that hot even after 4-5 hours. No aircond, but I keep a good "ceiling" space above it. The Mini... does not seem to get that hot either, just warm.

I bought the mini after the big one - for two reasons. After a while, I really dun wan to keep moving it between floors. I also wanted to keep a backup of some of my precious stuff, can't afford a crash and find 1TB of my fav files gone!

Dunno how prices of other brands are vs performance, but I find the ACRs at current price serve all my needs and wants. tongue.gif

The big bro can take max 2TB built in, I think - can check the manual.

Problem with 2.5" is it is still costly for 1TB. Most economical one now should be 2TB ext powered 3.5".

For Mini w/o coaxial output: If there is a coaxial digital output from the TV, you can go HDMI from mini to TV then connect from TV to HTS coaxial using RCA cable. Maybe some signal loss but you have benefit of not having the HTS on if you don't want it and just listen from TV.
But best audio performance results will be mini to HTS, then to TV - both via HDMI.

For POHD with coaxial output, can have the option to connect POHD to TV via HDMI as well as POHD to HTS via coaxial.

Since the mention of "heat dissipation",
My thoughts about the POHD.
1. Cheap skate generic aluminum heat sink for the Realtek Processor, it could have been better with fan. Maybe like Coolermaster Ice something..whatever. I actually opened the heat sink to see how well they installed the heat sink paste and I was shocked that it was bare minimal paste, and the heat sink or chip wasn't entirely flat. It was like one sided contact and this isn't good. What I did was bring out my left over "branded" heat sink paste (better quality and designed for CPU's), cleaned out the old paste, buttered up new paste and re installed the heat sink. I'm now assuming it'll do a better job in CPU cooling. BTW, forgot to say, the HS clip was not exactly straight and resulted with a slightly angled heat sink position. Careful bending of the clip and voila the HS is now PROPERLY and PERFECTLY INSTALLED. Hope I didn't void the warranty. There's NO problem so far for many hours. This is elementary stuff, no more complicated than installing your Intel or AMD CPU heat sink.
2. I'm a bit skeptical about installing an internal HDD. I'm thinking its still far safer to have an external HDD, THATS WHY I BOUGHT AN EXTERNAL ONE TODAY!. Why? One should carefully choose a HDD that doesn't suck current for breakfast, energy savings ones are highly recommended like WD Green types? (unsure). We live in hot country, and compacting another heat source in the form of a HDD may just make matters worse here. WD Raptor performance isn't crucial for POHD streaming. A cooler operating HDD will do just fine. Green again?
3. Whilst shopping today, it occured to me on some notebook coolers that may serve a purpose for POHD cooling. Yup..if I've got extra money, I'll consider it someday.
*
ACRyan is a commodity media player, cheap la. Internal HDD no sweat, used it for 1 yr liao. Cost vs benefit, you figure it out...

Think you bought the wrong thing - you should have spent 1-2K and get the premium-prime-dune-jupiter-saturn stuff lor. tongue.gif

Hi guys,

I must be one of the few very basic users of POHD and Mini, so need to ask a probably repeated question...

Which USB wireless dongle should I get?
Where best to buy, aprrox price?
Is procedure to install complex?

Was just thinking of internet radio, direct dwnlding, light streaming - with 1MB speed.

THnak you very very much!! notworthy.gif

You can try find some dongle that use Realtek wifi chip, RTL8191, 8192 and its variants. Asus USB N10 is one of them and used with success.
Its not difficult, just plug in and connect/configure like your PC to wireless.

Ok, TQ!

yes, yes, yes!!

i used to spend a lot on all kinds of dvds, must be a couple of thousand of them. since I got the pohds, i have not bought a single dvd. oK, some blurays that I really wanna watch at the best video and audio, wanna keep. old dvds, probably worthless now.

even for tv series, i used to watch avi type via usb-dvd player but now using pohd gives a smother picture. if mkv, superb, a new experience in tv series! now got 2 dvd players hardly used, except for old CDs.

guess it's bye-bye to dvds. come think of it, before this www and media files thingy, few understood how it works. now, it appears a little silly that we paid so much for those 0s and 1s on a piece of plastic while the reality is they are easily transfered. ok, copyright issues is something else... tongue.gif
