I'm curious as well. I have one 'old' external DVD-ROM lying around unused, but can't connect directly to my LCD TV to read my data disks since it's labelled as 'unsupported device'. Is it possible to connect the external DVD-ROM to the ACRYAN and play files from my data disk onto the TV?
*
it is possible. i've tried plugging in my usb dvd drive to my media player and manage to play dvd video disc. i think dvd data disc should work too.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I'll lug the whole setup to Lowyat and test it on the spot before buying. Better confirm it there and then so no hassle later. biggrin.gif

you mean the mini2? it's a good machine, reliable, more user friendly and produces better video/audio compared to cheaper ones.

i dunno what a bootloader is... tot flashing is all that is required?

could be this issue ur facing:
if you are changing from old to new gui, it takes a few minutes (depending on no. and size of files on yr hdd) when the new gui comes on for the first time.
this is because the default setting is "autoscan on", so it takes a while to scan the hdd before it gets to normal working condition.
wait till can navigate, you can then go to setup and set autoscan to off if you so wish.
i think autoscan off is better if you are plugging and unplugging hdds often.

apparently due to updating firmware without going thru each firmware one by one (i.e. for eg firmware v1 to v2 to v3....i went from v1 to v3)

it hanged / corrupted the bootloader (the loading software that boots up the ac ryan)

currently when i switch it on ...it will reach the opening screen (not the menu screen...the screen with the AC RYAN brand / logo) and hang there....

so need to reflash the bootloader....this is what i understand from other forums........

tried to install the 1st gui, then move up slowly?

each firmware has a pdf file that defines the lowest last version required for that version to work.

i have flashed my 2 units more than a dozen times each biggrin.gif , so far, ok.

for old models, best to stick to 3966, later versions give strange problems.

newer ones incl pohd2 and mini2, 7317 will be fine. 7317 is a good firmware.

yes, u can. then work upwards again one by one. i have done it several times. time consuming though.
only thing is i do not know if this will solve the "bootloader" problem u suspect.

Does anyone face this problem - my Ac Ryan freezes when it reaches certain sub-folders. Is there a limit to the number of sub folders ?

Am using the latest firmware - still buggy though. I thought the version that used the globe UI was much better. This latest version tends to be rather iffy -response at times is poor. I have disable to the auto-scanning - tends to cause the system to lock up.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

i suspect the chip is unable to handle it if you hv lotsa stuff, big files, etc.
i gave up on the autoscan, just switch it off, it'll be alright.

the issue i believe is that all manufacturers hv a hard time keeping up with new tech, new formats, big files, etc.
all of them overpromise, under-deliver, can't deliver, then forced to give up over time when tech keeps evolving so fast.

i come to accept the fact i can't hold on to old stuff but keep wanting new stuff to work too.
so, either be happy with limited old fashioned ways or keep spending on new gadgets to keep up with the latest.

my 2 fairly old acryrans and 1 china archgon - they all do a good job as long as i do not push them over the limit that i know.
given the money spent, i dun complain, quite happy overall.
to be on top of tech, guess i need to spend 1k every year to buy the latest one in the market - and i duno what that is now!
