oh... i see..so how do these 3rd party lens get the 'technology' to build the respective mounts for the respective brands?

still reverse engineered right?hmm.gif

not worried about sony/minolta lens la..more concerned about 3rd parties: tamron/sigma/tokina etc... sweat.gif
they still offer a different type of lenses.. that's their specialties..
like my sigma.. i think the AF is fast even for telephoto lens..

QUOTE(shootkk @ Jun 24 2010, 10:50 AM)
zstan : I don't think it's reverse engineered lar... I would think that the mount information is easily available from the manufacturers like Sony or Canon or Nikon. It does not stand to logic that they will stop third party lens maker from making lenses for their mounts.
*
yea i know its available...but somehow or what they still need to pay a fee/acquire a licence to obtain the mount information right?

dun think canon/sony would just give their mounts information to 3rd parties for freet?so if they don't give out the information, the mounts are most likely to be reverse engineered? hmm.gif

why no logic?3rd party lenses are eating a share into their profit margin lea..wouldn't these companies be a lot happier if 3rd party lenses don't exist? then everybody have no choice but the buy from the respective brands..

oh maybe i am too skeptical? laugh.gif

@8tvt

i think u misunderstood what i am saying. nvm la. hehe.

If contact properly, still can fire as normal.
If no contact, LCD will show flash OFF simbol. rclxub.gif

so it's not right after open the box..
but caused by tear n wear or have possibility manufacturing defect?

i would really think if got licensing involved on the mount is easier than reverse engineering permission..
sure they make their own..

if they not exist.. market share also no evolve much..
not only the lenses but also no one upgrading the body..

zstan : I'm sure there's a fee or license or whatever and I'm sure that it's not too prohibitive.

3rd party manufacturers play an important role in the DSLR field. They provide users with cheaper alternatives to premium lenses offered by the original manufacturers. This in turn will help the original manufacturers to sell more bodies. It's a win-win situation. Common examples are the cheaper alternatives for the 70-200mm f2.8 lenses.

3rd parties also fill in gaps in the line ups where the original manufacturers have little interest in pursuing. Like the 30mm lenses for APS-C sensors or the 50-150mm range for APS-C sensors. Take a look at the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens. It fills a niche for budget users who cannot afford to or won't buy the more expensive 16-35mm FF range from the original manufacturers. Without 3rd party lens maufacturers, the original manufacturers will not have such a big market share for bodies.

zstan: No issue what. It's very rare to find those Sigmas with old chips (the 400mm F5.6 non-APO is one).

3rd party lenses are reverse engineered from OEM lenses.

shootkk: They ARE reverse engineered - that's why Sigma took so long to get HSM on Sony/Pentax mount.

Also, Sigma lenses do not ask for new Lens IDs from Sony - they take existing Lens IDs. For example my Sigma 17-35mm F2.8-4 EX is reported as a Minolta 24mm F2.8. This causes a problem if the camera has in-built backfocus/frontfocus correction for the 24mm F2.8. I know the A900 onwards introduced correction for the backfocusing 50mm F1.4 - if any Sigma/Tamron/Tokina uses the same Lens ID, it may be affected by the correction table stored in the firmware.

boyzone: Your camera's hotshoe has dirt on it; the looseness is not the problem. Refer here:

albnok : Hmm... so they ARE reverse engineered. I stand corrected.

wonka : Just pack your camera with you wherever you go and you can take pics lor... Anyway, can you really go back to a compact cam? I find that I can no longer tolerate the shortcomings of compact cams, especially the dismal low light performance...

@albert
thanks for the explanation! just a bit tad worried that 3rd party lens cannot be used with newer bodies if Sony decides to upgrade the firmware. notworthy.gif

@wonka
get NEX-5 la! is that compact enough? laugh.gif

the IQ of my kodak(RM400) compact is terrible as well even in broad day light. if u really need to switch to compact, i'd suggest you for high end compacts, eg.canon G12..gf1 etc....

but its really unnecessary to sell ur gears la...who knows u might need one day again? innocent.gif innocent.gif
