You ask for it. First review in thread 2  tongue.gif

Been lurking for b-uhr (pilot watch) for few months now. Some history of the original WWII pilot watch can be found here, http://www.calibremagazine.com/node/305

Finally decided on Laco due to its price and originality of the b-uhr. Chose B dial coz I find A dial is too common and plain for my liking.
This is the original spec for B dial b-uhr. 55mm in size! Easily readable and wear outside the flight suit.

Shipping was fast, 3 days from Germany to KL with FedEx.

Special request for no logo dial to reflect the original spirit of b-uhr. 42mm in brushed steel, mineral cystal glass, inner hour markers with outter minute markers. Still getting used to the short hour hand.

Non screw-in onion crown, would not put a mark on the back of your hand like diamond crown.
user posted image

Polished steel clear case back with mineral cystal. Mitoya 8215 workhorse. Second hand running smoothly, no stutter issue so far (touch wood  sweat.gif )

Original pilot strap with rivets. Strap alone costing EUR49.00
user posted image

Need some times to figure how to wear the strap  sweat.gif Strap sitting nicely on my wrist in last hole. People with small wrist might need to request for shorter strap or punch additional holes.
user posted image

Lume nicely with superluminova.

And lastly, compulsory wrist shot.  rclxms.gif

Very limited production due to parts availability (or financial difficulty), stocks usually sold off within days.
Laco, one of the 5 original makers of b-uhr, Make in Germany, albeit Japanese movement, EUR166.39 ~RM730 with free FedEx shipping.
Though not as historically correct spec as WUS LE, but I still think that this baby is a steal  rclxm9.gif

These watches were originally made in 55mm & are worn outside a flight jacket or on the pilot's ankle. They were real instruments & were not worn when not flying.

These were the days when cabins were not pressurized & pilots wore thick leather jackets & gloves to protect them from the cold.

Apart from Laco, there were 3 other manufacturers which were authorized to manufacture these flight watches ( IWC, Wempe )

They were made with no manufacturer's markings as well as country of origin ( in line with military watches of the time )

This version is one used by navigators & bombers ( the other version without the inner circle was made for pilots )

The crowns were made extra large to enable ease of operation when wearing a glove.

If you happen to come across the IWC versions from WW2 , you are looking at a real foirtune!!

p.s. the luminous index for the original watches were made from a radio active substance which is now legally banned in many countries

ankle? I thought it was thigh. or do they fly crossing their legs.

I think U may have missed another company.

QUOTE
In the 1940s, only five companies made the original pilot watches: IWC, A. Lange & Söhne, Laco, Wempe and STOWA.

iirc the history of these 5 are rather complex too. A Lange & Söhne was unable to fulfill the military demand then and these other players were sourced.

BTW: U don't have to quote your own post, can delete that.
