Very cheap oni la this set up. That's y I chose it as my photo album set up. It's the cheapest Mac set up I can think of for photo album purposes. I needed it to be a cheap system coz will b using it to store n view photos only.

haha, i am heading abroad soon too. not sure if i shud get it when im there. but im so tempted to get one. i think several machines outlets still have the mstand, but im planning to purchase a secondhand one bcos this will be my second mstand for my 2nd mbp. think it will kinda neat to have both on the stand.

thought about getting the arc stand, but that one makes the mbp unable to open its lid if anytime i need to. will try and search for a secondhand one. anyone? laugh.gif

Im not using one so I cant give you any comments but shouldnt it work as it is made for airplanes? If you are a frequent flyer and the planes that you sit has plugs then go ahead and get it but I know not every plane has power ports for you... So go do some research and you should know if you wnana get it or not...

Google may help you

rawrr! i need a mStand. okok do you guys think mstand or the book arc stand is more worthy. i have an external monitor hence, i dont 'really' need to really use the mbp when its connected to the monitor. so which one is better, mstand or the arc? rclxub.gif

i am using the mstand with external monitor too, good to have 2 screen sometimes, can separate work and play if u dont want to use space.
or like me, have the parallel running on mbp and SL on external monitor sometimes when i need to use AutoCAD

yes i mod a few LED light under the stand, not useful but just for the sake of being cool...haha

Haha... But yea its a nice picture... I think the book arc is good if you dont wanna use dual monitors.... I think its still more worth it to get the mstand compared to the book arc as you can also close the lid if you dont wanna use dual monitors... Dual monitors are much more useful when you need to multitask =)

Wobbly is OK cause at least you can fit a casing together with your MBP and avoid scratches from it =) If its too fit then it might cause scratches to it..

Added on May 22, 2010, 5:05 pmBut of cause not too loose until it can fall off anytime..

Which version of MBP is he using? You have to check which version of Macbook Pro is he using and then verify the type of RAM that is compatible with his MBP at this link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro

IINM any brand should be suitable as long as it satisfies the type... You can double confirm by calling the apple center..

check out which version MBP is he using, because 1st u need to know what's the FSB n also what's the max RAM he can use. if it's the 1st gen core duo MBP (with ATI x1600), it can only go up to 2gb max. also it uses ddr2-667 but using ddr2-800 shudn't be a problem (it'll just downclock)

I think the panel is IPS panel right? Maybe that also contributes to the price... Yea and the colour of the display is very sharp and vibrant... But all apple products are definitely quoted higher compared to those mainstream products =P

Hehe. I did sold you my Mac Pro to you. And the photo was indeed taken lastnight.
Just got my new tables so rearrange my setup plus upgraded to new speaker. Studiophile AV40.

My Mac Pro now is the old model. Nothing fancy.

Plug in the power adapter, plug in any usb device such as external hdd or keyboard or mouse. Close the lid, then wake your mb using your secondary keyboard. That's it smile.gif

sometimes i wish Apple would have just included an option in the system pref to do that, like on windows... very troublesome la to do all that lol

everytime also need to turn on the macbook, and then quickly close the lid..... If got a setting in system pref, i think it will make everyones life easier

ya, can leave on, close lid, then use mouse/keyboard to wake the macbook. but isnt it troublesome? lol

isntead of closing the lid all the time, they shud have an option in system pref, to change the primarily display to external monitor just by clicking, instead of closing lid

hey im thinking about purchasing about purchasing a monitor to be connected to my mbp. but im worried that the mbp might get hot if it is left closed, and not opened. unlike my sony vaio that i have connected to my current display, it is not made out of alum hence, the surface is not as hot as compared to the mbp.

really need advice on users that have already connected their mbp with external monitors: do i need to open the laptop even when connected to an external monitor to avoid heat being trapped while it is closed.

thanks in advance. notworthy.gif

I'm connecting with external screen too, with display off but lid opened. It's getting hot with long time usage too, but mine is average 60-70. Do you use smcFanControl? Everytime i switch the fan speed faster when it reach over 70 celcius.

hot is very subjective.... pretty as in it burns your hand...?

fire up your activity monitor and see if there's any process(es) that's hogging up your cpu...

any external bus-powered devices plugged in...?

yeah i leave the lid open too with display off, but i wonder whether is there any other way to control the temperature of the mbp without being in an air conditioned room as i plan to get the BookArc.

hot = uncomfortable to touch, not until it burns the hand. sometimes after leaving it on for too long, visiting website with flash will cause the fan to go fast.

and i thought external displays are apple hardware hence posting the query here. the link is rather mbp related issues imo. blush.gif

websites with flash... see...?

fire up Activity Monitor, see both Safari, and the Flash plugin processes... this is what's using your CPU power...

And which model of the MBP do you have...? If you're on the 2010 15" MBP, plugging into external display will trigger the GT 330M automatically, so it uses slightly more power, hence higher temp...

urm not sure how do i read the activity monitor, but if im reading it correctly, iTunes and safari are taking up alot of the cpu usage and memory.

but after turning on flash (app on fb), it stats that the flash takes up 110% of cpu usage and abt 700mb or memory. is that normal? blush.gif

btw currently using mbp 15" early 09 version with the external. i have another mbp 15" early 10 version with the 330m. wud that be a better pair (less hot) with the monitor compared to the older version?

Pretty much that way...

And that's one of the reasons why Apple's trying to dump Flash in favor of HTML5... it's a resource hog....

I wouldn't worry too much about it... I've been encoding videos for weeks now, each session last about 15 minutes with temps going up to 90 and fans at full blast..., and I have a table fan blowing at me instead of the MBP, which is blocked by my hi-fi speaker...

Believe me, the MBP is designed to work that way, and the processor is designed to handle temps up to 105 max... The reason you get much heat is that the MBP is made out of aluminum - a perfect heat conductor, and it's doing better on heat dissipation than plasticky laptops.

well the hot air is supposed to exit at the rear exhaust port. so just make sure u dont blow air into that port and ofcoz dont block it lah.

i used a cooler before but i dont see any temp difference heheh

Get a zalman notebook cooler, sit below ur ac, place a fan on the side of the table blowing ur laptop from the side, if ur on a wooden desk put something under ur laptop (book) to lift it up so heat will dissipate evenly? These are just a few simple guides on cooling ur laptop.

among the alternatives mentioned, im using the: blow the fan directly on the laptop. invested on a cooler master few months back, but found that it didnt help at all, so scraped that option.

i think ive seen one of those mini usb fan that i cud use to blow directly at the left corner of the mbp.mm hmm.gif

The notebook coolers work, u gotta place the back of ur macbook below the fan. Just some adjustments on the placement of ur mb on the cooler.

would not recommend usb fans as they are not powerful enough, + u don have much usb ports on ur mb, unless u invest on a usb hub.

A standing fan and a notebook cooler is a good combination.

not really, im using a using a usb stand fan + zalman nc1000 while gaming. the usb fan that im using is definitely powerful enough to blow away all the heat and keep my mbp cool. jz place the usb fan on the left of my mbp and pointed it directly on the top left of keyboard and zalman on full blast. u can surely feel the temperature different with the usb fan there.

between, i think the zalman nc1000 is a NO NO with mbp, coz it only cooling the front part of mac while the GPU and CPU are located near the rear left. So my suggestion for those who wanna buy a notebook cooler, pls select one that cool at the rear side not the front.

here the pic of the usb fan.. quite big the size but it is powerful.

any glass shop can do for u. just measure ur table, n give them the measurements

but remember, it's likely that u'll need a mousepad. mice doesnt track well on glass surfaces

its a capdase silicon layer. quite cheap. got it from a fellow forumer for rm55. biggrin.gif think its called capdase keysaver breather, as it has holes in between the keys to allow ventilation as it is made for better heat ventilation i guess.

hahha just thought it wud look great if the apple wireless keyboard has black keys, and this is the easiest way i cud think of how to do that. tongue.gif

Ah ok the keyboard protector. Looks so seamless in the photo. Actually if there was some kind of vinyl sticker to may the keys look black that'd be neat because the keyboard feedback would at least be retained.

yeah precisely. but i dont wanna make it black forever. so i thought i just use this keyboard protector for the time being. when i want the keys to be white again, just have to effortlessly take off the keyboard protector.

You can always read up at official page: apple.com/appletv

That is an Airport Extreme base station. LCD is connected to the MacBook. The DVI adapter is so obvious...

From my previous impression by the look of it, mstand is just a piece of 'luxury' piece of metal without high tech design as attraction. It would be more worth a try from my view if the price is roughly rm100plus.

i watched this youtube video showed its comparison with X-stand. It impressed me into a positive idea about it. And read more different review about it.

Now i had it, it works well as a heatsink too. Its a better heatsink than the laptop fan i used for 1 year(i spent rm50 for that. It's a metal but it doesn't do anything.)

Now my neck no more tired by looking down at the monitor. You can't adjust the height. You may add something below it if not satisfy with the height for viewing.

Mstand got extra space earned for my tablet and keyboard..

Bought it at rm209 from Epi,Pavillion. Guess it raised price abit from what i read was rm180.

I'm having the same problem. Any solutions?

When I connect the external monitor to the adapter the monitor works but the wireless internet stops working.

I'm running in clamshell mode (i.e. with the lid closed) that can block the wireless signal.

Added on August 21, 2010, 1:04 pmi had tried up another my another MBP it's a same problem, the monitor is work well, but internet connection get lost. I just wondering is the external cable problem.

Hmmm. I haven't tried the gaming performance yet.. Somehow i am able to run few apps(itunes, firefox, a bit of editing, downloads, messenger, etc etc) flawlessly... Apps launch pretty fast too! The i5 is definitely faster than 2010 MBP 13' Core 2 Duo. U getting one too?

If money is not an issue for u then go for it. You're basically paying for the right to use Mac OS X, the design and the brand... I am sure no other competitors have design like Apple hehehe...

Performed long overdue Mac OS/iOS/App updates + iLife 11 installation + general maintenance for all the Macs+iOS devices in the house last night. Used teleport to control them all using same Keyboard & mouse, all update bundles were stored on the iMac and shared over 802.11n. At times like these I wish I had OS X Server with own localised software update server, things would've been much easier. But the cost of OS X Server just doesn't justify it. Not yet tongue.gif

I'm actually looking forward to the Mac app store. Application updates for the Mac would certainly be more simplified.

I can see quite a number of MACkers...bought a MBP added with an external monitor. It functions the same as before? Am thinking whether to get an iMac or MPB. I'm gonna use it partly for designing/editing film purposes.

that depends on whether you need it to b portable. a MBP + monitor will give a portability and also a bigger screen when using it at home (but of cos you're gonna need to get the external kb and mouse to complete the set up)

@wyxyz
agreed with llsphinxll.
yep i was in the same dilemma before.. and imho 2 screens are better for designing/editing purposes, even tho the complete set (mbp+screen+acc) cost me more than a i7 27" imac but yaa my mpb served me well enough..

Probably that is the keyword :Portability. I've heard that in some aspect, iMac's quad-core wins over.

if portability is not your concern then go for iMac
if you need to do some serious work and need a powerful machine, still go for iMac

I'm using the combined MBP + monitor set up.

Unless you decide to probably have the laptop running as a desktop then i think its fine. Heard mixed reviews about theB BookArc. Some say they do a pretty decent job with ventilation since the fan area is facing upwards, not too sure about that. Why don't you go for the m-stand instead? At least that way you have 2 screens?

I bought the stand, however, the stand are not meant for audioengine 5 because of the usb port on the left speaker. If i were to charge an ipod/ipad/iphone on top of the left speaker, the gadget will slide down.

the docking system is more than charging function. Chech this out:

Wow u guess correctly!
Well i'm from Bilal...

Up till end of this sem. , i was living with my friends.
So, no worries.

And by the way, i'm one of the "foreigners" you're saying. And thanks for your sweet comments, we, foreigners, love and being loved in UIA!~

Where are you staying?
Next sem. , i'll be at Bilal again. Love that place than the rest excluding Ali. But too far from campus though.

hello guys,

I'm doing a interest check if any of you folks interested in getting apple cables, such as minidisplay to DVI adapter, minidisplay to HDCP cable, minidisplay to VGA. As you probably knew, you could easily get them from applestore or premium retailers, with premium price of course.

I'm thinking to buy some from Monoprice, a very trusted brand with reputable products. Some of you may have heard about it. So I thought maybe I could organise a bulk or something, win-win situation for everyone.

So, if anyone is interested, please drop a message in my thread:

this is not the topic to ask on upgrade.

1) yes, so long they are compatible.
2) it will be very difficult.

no because u need to buy a flight ticket to buy from apple store tongue.gif

in malaysia only got apple resellers and online store

well there's a lot of college students including myself using a mac, so yes. a better question would be if it's suitable for YOUR course. and u can seek the best answer by asking ur seniors. but then im an engineering student n need a lot of windows-only programs, i do just fine

It's totally worth it to get iMac now because apple just recently refresh them. Future iMac refresh should be 8 to 12 months from now.

Hi, Shifu!

I got a 30" Apple Cinema from US and brought back to Malaysia. When I wanted to on it, my friend stopped me and said the voltage in US and Malaysia are different. He said I will burn the whole LCD. Now I am scared. He added that US is using 110 volt while Malaysia is using 220-240 volt. Is it what he said is true? I need someone who has experience it to confirm with me before I on the power. @@

Many thanks! HELP! URGENT!
