I'm connecting with external screen too, with display off but lid opened. It's getting hot with long time usage too, but mine is average 60-70. Do you use smcFanControl? Everytime i switch the fan speed faster when it reach over 70 celcius.
yeah i leave the lid open too with display off, but i wonder whether is there any other way to control the temperature of the mbp without being in an air conditioned room as i plan to get the BookArc.

hot is very subjective.... pretty as in it burns your hand...?
fire up your activity monitor and see if there's any process(es) that's hogging up your cpu...
any external bus-powered devices plugged in...?
I trust enough that the MBP SMC does its job without smcFanControl...

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1391606hot = uncomfortable to touch, not until it burns the hand. sometimes after leaving it on for too long, visiting website with flash will cause the fan to go fast.
and i thought external displays are apple hardware hence posting the query here. the link is rather mbp related issues imo.
