ARGH!

Steam updated and broke Torchlight*.

GG....

* Everybody who bought the game at 50% off have their games reverted to demo version.
*
Update: Steam has fixed the problem.

Yes, a game that's not counted in gigabytes!

Uh, it's... fast, snappy and I've found a strange need to open 20 tabs in each of 10 Chrome windows, each tab running some silly Flash BS while watching a DVD via an external monitor. At which point I'll be wishing for more power.

In short, it's intoxicating. Obviously.

too late, torchlight promo is over. its back up to $19.99 instead of $9.99. that is, unless you wan to buy it at full price.

dont bother with exchange rates, banks wont gut you too much, it'll be roughly the same everywhere. and its gonna fluctuate so you cant go looking for the lowest rate every time.

I did some simple benchmarking on Portal comparing the 9600M GT and the 9400M.

GeForce 9600M GT

this is the recommended settings:

user posted image

with recommended settings: 29 fps
all maximum except for texture detail on Medium: 29 fps
all maximum settings: 8 fps

the only issue for my system is texture, which is due to limited graphics RAM (256mb). those who have the 512mb ram should do better. the current MBP with geforce 330M should feel about the same lah. anything over 30fps isn't really noticeable, very smooth already biggrin.gif

GeForce 9400M

recommended settings:

user posted image

with recommended settings: 45 fps
configured to settings as recommended or 9600M GT (1st picture): 15 fps (50% decrease)

since MBW and MBP 13 only has a maximum resolution of 1280x800, this is what i would recommend for 9400M. can get 29 fps.

user posted image

geforce 320M should do better, but not as good as the 9600M GT.

hopefully this is helpful tongue.gif

Steam is a buggy beast. Not to say Valve hasn't been scrambling to solve the million and one bugs that pop up.

Unfortunately games perform better when you bootcamp into Windows and play there. I've been told the reason is that Windows' DirectX is far superior than the OpenGL OSX and Linux uses.

New games for Mac Steam

QUOTE
Killing Floor - $13.39
Madballs in Babo:Invasion - $4.99
Altitude - $4.99
Hearts of Iron III - $29.99
Chains - $4.99
Caster - $4.99
Eschalon: Book I - $19.99
Windosill - $2.99
Simplz Zoo - $4.99
Europa Universalis III Complete - $29.99
The games that support multiplayer will allow PC and Mac users to play together, if they want to.

Steam software is still a little buggy on Mac with all those update etc.. But so far it never hangs on me... All the bugs are minor issues as you still can play games without worrying about it hang or crash not for me so far...

New (early) stats from Valve:

QUOTE
  • Roughly two thirds of all Steam Mac users are running on a laptop.
  • Portal (with the same code base across platforms) is one fifth as likely to crash on a Mac than on Windows.
  • And one week after launch, already more than eleven percent of all Steam purchases are for the Mac.

    Source

My only issue would be with the third piece of statistic. The 11% can't be considered anything more than a spike due to a) people trying out Steam and b) the Steam indie bundle being so damn cheap.

Haha the first one is definitely true as most people would opt for Macbooks instead of iMac or MacPro... Its definitely because its a new launch of steam on Mac with people trying out games (Same goes to any newly launched gadgets/events)... Windows based users have already bought their games and Im sure they are more on a slow pace now since nothing really big comes out...
