Yo guys! I been think whether to get a mb white or mbp... since white has dropped its price also and with new specs. Any cons on the white model over mbp?
*
look for nimrod's post a few pages back. he summed it up pretty nicely

u shud really go for the 13" mbp if u can afford it. rm600 difference is seriously worth it. more RAM (this alone already worth rm360), SD slot, firewire 800 port, and most importantly the aluminium body. it's really hard to find a white macbook that still looks clean after 1 year tongue.gif

yours one is 1TB too?
u mean u installed the SmartWare, and then disable it from running at startup? or u follow the steps like what tarvalslain87 said?

1) btw, as usual, it is a good practice that we unmount any drive when we r not using it. but if for time machine, if we dont unmount it, there shouldn't be any problem right?
2) time machine will not recover your mac if your mac cannot start right? if like tat, in case the mac cannot start up, we need to backup with another method right? any other method that u do back up besides time machine?

hope to hear from u soon smile.gif thanks a lot!  notworthy.gif
*
time machine creates hourly backups, so dun unmount it if u want hourly backups. personally i just do daily backups. plug in, backup, eject, go sleep.

if u mac cannot start, u can boot from the OSX dvd and restore your system from Time Machine. u also get to choose the time n date of the backup u want to restore to. then it will start transferring ur files (this will take hours obviously) n u'll end up with a running system exactly as the time/date of the backup u chose.

so nope, u dun need another backup method smile.gif

i partition my windows for 50gb last time but when it enters the blue screeen installation, it loads all the files and the setup starts..after the blue screen complete, they said my com will reboot in 15secs..but after 15secs,the blue screen instaltion restart all over again..then i google it and i realised they said fat32 partition cannot be larger than 32gb..so i try to partition 30gb this time but still the same problem..sigh!
*
i read a lot of "guides" saying this but i never had any problem with FAT32 partitions more than 32gb

dude just try ntfs already tongue.gif afaik windows runs better on ntfs anyway

Just bought MBP 13" from the switch at the mines.

Done installing windows xp sp3 bootcamp and all related software. So far so good.

First time using macosx, ever! Love it!
*
u're probably going to hate it for the 1st two weeks or so, since everything is so different tongue.gif u'll love it later haha

QUOTE(shanecross @ May 28 2010, 04:17 PM)
my MBW sometimes lags when i run itunes. I have to reboot and then its all good. common issue?
*
it shouldn't lag when running itunes. most probably other heavy apps. does ur mac still lag when u're ONLY running itunes n nothing else?

iWork is RM299. Office 2008 is double that.

macbook doesnt come with software to deal with Office documents. u can get iWork but sometimes the formatting will be messed up. Office 2008 is a safer choice

u can always opt for the free OpenOffice 3.0 to save money.

if u wanna buy a VM app (parallels desktop rm289, vmware fusion rm299) and have a windows installer, can go for Office 2010 beta free tongue.gif this is my top choice since u dun have to worry about compatibility at all

I just want to ask u something, im  a new user of MBP.

How much it cost u to upgrade 320gb 4 the HDD?.
U sent to apple service center, or upgrade it by yourself?,
And it will not void warranty?
*
320GB 2.5" sata drives are around rm150 for now. u can buy at any PC shops (i'd recommend hitachi or western digital) and install it on your own. u'll also need an external casing to transfer ur files etc, even cheap ones will do.

wont void ur warranty. u can find an upgrade guide at ifixit.com, juz make sure u get the correct screwdrivers

u can send to service center if u want, but of course they'll charge u lah. doing it urself is also a good chance to get to know ur mac on a more 'intimate' level lol

Thinking of partitioning my hdd to 3 partitions
1. MacOS
2. Windows
3. Fat32 - for both mac and windows to read

what's the best approach?

The one i thought of was to bootcamp it, set it to have a bigger partition then in windows, partition it to 2, fat32 and ntfs
*
juz bootcamp like normal and install ntfs-3g would be enough. in bootcamp 3.0, windows can access the OSX partition too. if not juz install macdrive

btw for casings..i really like the fabrix cases biggrin.gif but im not gonna get it because it looks so nice, later i'll be tempted to get something to protect the casing instead haha

Ooh u customize when u order right.

External casing, u mean external hdd?
*
nope. for most external hard drives (as in the actual hard drive plus a casing like WD passport, seagate freeagent etc), you'll void ur warranty if u take out the actual HDD inside it and swap with ur internal drive.

so buy a bare 320gb external hdd (e.g. WD scorpio blue, hitachi travelstar), and a separate USB2.0-to-SATA casing. put the new 320gb into the casing, connect to ur mac and clone ur internal harddrive. u can download Superdrive to do that.

when it's done (it'll take a few hours depending on how much data u got), take out the 320gb from the casing, then take out ur internal HDD from ur mac. install the 320gb into ur mac, and insert the stock hdd into the casing (so u can use this for something else later). done smile.gif

u can format the stock hdd since u dont need it anymore, but i'd advice u to keep it for about one month juz in case u run into any problems with the new drive

another way is to right click on the app's icon on the dock, hold down Option and u'll see "quit" turns to "force quit".

this is just to force quit la, the activity monitor is more like ctrl+alt+del

Oh ic. So, does that mean I can leave my MBP on for one week by keeping the charger attached? O.o Sorry, I'm really new to mac here, and thanks for your answer.
*
it's really simple. if u take out the charger all the time when ur MBP is fully charged, then you'll be using ur battery too often.

this makes ur battery dies much earlier than it should

then u need to get a new battery. and again. and again.

so why not juz save ur battery cycle n just run off the charger? smile.gif

But the Seagate's firewire port is very tempting.
*
seagate is not the only one who has firewire port tongue.gif

yes, u dun need to get "for mac" versions for it to work on a mac, but firewire800 is only available on the "for mac" models IINM

^ only for the current MB/P line-up. which is weird that apple didnt enable this feature for the older models, considering the trackpad is exactly the same

similar to what happened with the MBA last time. it didnt have the support for 4-finger gesture while having the same multitouch sensor. either apple issued an update or someone found a hack to enable 4 finger gestures

talking about trackpads... mine is not that responsive for actual clicking. i dun really mind cuz i prefer to tap... but for clicking, i have to press it longer than usual, probably a second or so for it to register

im not gonna send this for servicing since it doesnt matter to me, but juz curious if anyone have the same problem? smile.gif
