QUOTE(boonwuilow @ Mar 27 2010, 08:44 AM) If there're high takeup in your area rarely you will get even close to that with international sites. It won't be much difference between a 4mbps, a 20mbps, 50mbps or a 100mbps line. Save your money for other things. A stable and dependable line is more of your interest. My friends from Japan, US, Taiwan, HK and even Singapore often tells me that they are more than contented with their isps entry level packages which starts around that kind of speed. |

QUOTE(iipohbee @ Mar 27 2010, 08:59 AM) If there're high takeup in your area rarely you will get even close to that with international sites. Difference here is fiber vs ADSL.. ADSL is affected badly by old copper wiring, lightning, rain water, weather in general and has slightly higher latency (10-15ms).It won't be much difference between a 4mbps, a 20mbps, 50mbps or a 100mbps line. Save your money for other things. A stable and dependable line is more of your interest. My friends from Japan, US, Taiwan, HK and even Singapore often tells me that they are more than contented with their isps entry level packages which starts around that kind of speed. iipohbee is right by saying you will rarely need a lot of bandwidth unless you have special applications.. such as when you download from websites you use a download accelerator or you use p2p programs a lot. Those programs will be able to easily max out a 20mbps line because they make multiple, simultaneous connections. If you're just browsing and streaming, the highest speed you would likely get per connection on a 5mbps package is about 300-450KB/s and this depends on congestion on the ISPs network and the routing to the destination server. I doubt fiber optics is affected by the amount of users in your area.. but if everyone in your TM exchange area is constantly torrenting I guess it would affect the international bandwidth you would receive. Main reason to upgrade to fiber is to defeat the physical limitations of ADSL.. that's about it. |

You can have Streamyx and Unifi in 1 house, they use two different sets of wiring. You can cut Streamyx's copper wire and Unifi won't be affected.. and vice versa. You have to pick a new phone number for Unifi's VOIP and you can't reuse an old number.is unifi package come with a phone number? |

Unifi has pure fiber and VDSL for apartments if I'm not mistaken. Depends where you live and what kind of wiring your place supports. In the case of VDSL I suppose you would have to keep and use your old copper wiring.

VDSL2 and ADSL2+ are backward compatible.
Both standards can work alongside and are compatible to each other. Most modem manufacturers have VDSL2 modems which can fall back to ADSL2+ if the distance exceeds the requirement. |

TM doesn't have good planning. They should have started replacing the copper wiring to the roadside switches with fiber many years ago.
If they've done that, changing the equipment to support speeds of upto 20mbps can easily be done with FTTX. They can even have the option to extend it further into homes with FTTH if they wanted to. Japan started their fiber roadside switches during the early 90s. |

QUOTE(boonwuilow @ Mar 27 2010, 09:23 AM) That u have to read the contract urself. I seriously do not recommend getting HSBB until they have proper draft in the bandwidth cap issue in 2year contract agreement where it is reasonable.60GB per month is NOT enough even for simple youtubing. It should be 5 times of that, say 300GB. This post has been edited by billytong: Mar 27 2010, 09:33 AM |

QUOTE(iipohbee @ Mar 27 2010, 08:35 AM) 4mb-5mbps is more than good enough actually. good tips..I've discussed this before. Unless you rely very much on in house servers which resides on the isp's own datacentres your international site surfing is limited to around that speed even at the most off peak hours. This comes from my experience of using many fiber and cable connections around the world. Unless you live in a country where they mostly surf their native language and surf during off peak hours, rarely you can achieve high speeds with international connectivity. That is also because they are unused. Once the foreigner population increases in a particular area, the international bandwidth which they have will quickly be used up resulting in the same slow effect. There's no free food. I've tried doing speedtests from many countries like Europe, US, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Australia. The people there told me don't waste your time getting anything over 10mbps because you'll rarely achieve such speeds if you're the typical internet user. So you might as well save up the extra money because it's like when you go for a buffet meal and the organizer pretty much know how much a regular can eat. If some alternative isp is able to provide 4-6mbps average access speed in my area, I'll gladly take it up even if it were to cost similarly to Unifi VIP5 even if it's slighly slower by 1-2mbps. Have you all heard that Starhub's 100mbps DOCSIS 3 cable modem service is not getting enough responses? Many think it's a waste of money unless you share your home with many tenants. |

for the moment TM will "monitor" the usage pattern and there is no cap for download for all packages. However there's no black n white
they also need to lower the price to become more affordable and to attract more customer. The entry level package should be RM100 or lower not RM149 |
