Hey dude, i get my m17x with this promotion too.. free upgrade SLI card..
Last time im thinking to get or not.. Then suffering at this forum like u..

But, finally, i decided to get it with upgrading the proc and the hd display to 1200p and 3 years complete cover warranty at RM82XX only..
and my opinion is, grab it... You wait for the latest ATI will maybe costs u alot, and maybe when it release the ATI chip and u suffering again whether buy or wait for promotion again and again and repeat ...

Btw, i already have mine 1 month++ almost 2 months ..

The only reason i think is because of ahem's CD..

the proc u upgrade to what?

IIRC it's because the CD art was a sticker, apparently that's bad for slotloading drives.
I used to label my CDs like that, led to my old laptop's CD drive a splode.

with the core 2 duo 2.8ghz proc,there is no bottleneck since ur using sli??
then this is great news for me!!

n can u guys tell me what is the minimum processor that can be used with sli to avoid the bottleneck?

To answer your original question, a 2.8GHz one will be great, but if you're stuck with the 2.53GHz one, it's not the end of the world.

Are you sure you want to get the M17x?
I don't want to confuse you even more, but IMO you seem to be concentrating on the fact that the M17x has SLI, and nothing else.

SLI *is* powerful, and getting it free is one hell of a good deal, but you shouldn't stress yourself to fit in processor/display for the 30% extra graphics performance that SLI offers.

With a less powerful processor, SLI doesn't become useless, it just causes stuff like complex calculations etc to become slower. For example, in strategy games, the processor is doing a lot of work because it has to calculate all the units' actions, explosions etc on the battlefield.
In games like L4D2 the processor also has to work harder when you get attacked by many, many zombies.

So it actually depends on what you want to use your M17x for. So if you get it now, no regrets, be happy with it and take care of it

well,one fact is,i am concentrating on the fact that the m17x has the sli..
thats why i am so concerned..
i also do gaming and i am replacing my pc for a laptop..
thats why i am searching for a good pc replacement..
and furthermore,the m15x higher specs is already 6.6k and i need to juz add in a little to get the m17x..
well,if i want to upgrade the proc n display it will cost me another 1k but i'm fine with it..

but in ur personal opinion..should i proceed with the m17x or consider the m15x?

i bet you still don't find any games that doesn't satisfy your desire FPS rite mate? just don't name me stupid game's engine like the one used for GTA4

C2D can be consider as high end Dual Processor which is not a problem that limit your GPU's performance.

but still, its depend on the optimization of game's engine. if you benchmarking Crysis & Crysis Warhead, where the Crytex Engine choose to optimize Dual Core instead of Quad core, you can see an increment of performance by using C2D compared to Quad.

but if the game's engine utilized Quad Core like Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5, your gaming framerate can be compensate by your monstrous GTX280M SLi. you don't even realized if there is less 5 FPS and if your FPS is more than 60 - you will not see the different at all.

so what i am stressing here is - the term bottleneck on C2D 28.Ghz is not significant. you may use that term for M11x or M15x for their processor, but not for M17x-R1.


the real bottleneck will occur when you choose i7 for gaming.

take the m15x and throw in 2k for the 5870 =D

are you referring to 5870 Desktop variant?

because 5870 Mobility cannot fit into M15x casing. not even its heatsink

The M15x is already ridiculously large and barely fits in my backpack.
I don't even want to know how big the M17x is.

So imo, you'd only be buying the M17x as a total desktop replacement. It's as portable as a desktop itself.
At least with the M15x, it DOES(barely) fit in a bag, so if you really need to, you can carry it around.

If portability isn't an issue, definetely go for the M17x. Quad core is more than enough to do anything today, and its performance downright murders the M15x.

Now it's my turn to be worried.
Almost about to buy the M15x. Always thought i7 optimization thingy was a problem, but not a big one.

it is good processor to run most of the program - except gaming due to the HTT. most of the game use real clock (1.6GHz for i7-720), not clock during HTT.

but if you are not enthusiast that doesn't demanding of high setting, it suit you well

How do I get it to use 2.8GHz? I NEED MORE FRAMES DAMMIT. I get paranoid when any of my games are under 60fps.

yea, i heard ppl saying i7 is bad for gaming.. i mean not as good as c2d ..

err you simply can't. as long as the engine do not optimize HTT, you just can't.

but you can owning RE5 kaw2 i tell you since RE5 is the only game in the world that support HTT!

it is FREAKIN good if the games support HTT, but sadly, only one game that support HTT so far...

but sometimes, this defect can be compensate by your GTX260M. ask around, they will say their gaming performance is not as bad as its rumors - since GTX260M cover this disadvantages for them.
