The hobby of collecting toys and action figures (and I'm talking about the ones from Hasbro and Mattel) is fast becoming (or has already become) a niche.

Like branded stuff.

But they're still nowhere as exclusive and highly detailed collectible merchandise as those from Hot Toys/Sideshow etc.

I can't wait for Hasbro to raise the price of a 3 3/4 inch figure to RM99.90. Not gonna happen, though. They'll prob close shop by then and we can spend our hard earned money on necessities like food etc. Buy a house even.

And I ain't wearing a smile on me face.

It's not like toys are like comics... I mean, with comics you have omnibuses, absolute editions and what not and they're really value for money.

I mean, recently I purchased Thor by Walt Simonson Omnibus for RM426.00 less 30 per cent, and it collects all of the legendary creator's Thor stories (40 issues in total). And the colours on each panel, each page has been digitally remastered.

I also own Absolute Watchmen, Absolute New Frontier, Absolute Crisis on Infinite Earths, etc and yes, they're expensive but at least I get to read them, enjoy every detail of the artist's artwork, get myself transported into the story created by the writer(s) and artist(s) and re-read them again and again and get totally new experiences each time, discover new things etc.

So yeah, they're value for money purchases.

But when it comes to toys, spending over RM50, RM100, even RM300 for one plastic? I'd rather read comics and graphic novels.

I've been collecting Star Wars since the 70s but man, RM40 for one figure these days? And with Hasbro playing hide-and-seek with us, skipping waves even, jacking up prices as and when they feel like it as though we have no other avenues to buy them other than in TRU, Parkson, Isetan... well, please don't push it. I might decide to sell off my entire collection and send my kid to university and say bye bye to toys forever.

yeah bro i know what u mean.

most comic collectors graduated to collecting toys. i know i did. before then comics was a 32 page coloured A4 prints. later it became die-cast, glow-in-dark, embossed, variant cover crap.

of course prices went thru the roof with these new "additions".

even then paying for comics is still worthwhile as u get to re-read and admire the artwork.

the glory days were the marvel legends. for rm29.90 u get superb sculpt and articulation (imagine some of the fingers are articulated as well) and u get a free comic bundled!!!

nowadays it has shrunk to 3.75 inch and cost rm44.90!!

hasbro is making a big mistake in pushing up the prices as u will deter new collectors who will eventually fill the shoes of the old collectors thus creating a "market" for these toys.

now everyone that i know is migrating to HotToys as the value is thr even though it may cost 5 times the cost of a normal DC GL. now would i pay 5 x more for a 12 inch, superbly crafted, limited production run with growing value or throw rm99.90 for something that will end up in the bargain bin?

we all know the answer to that question.

Agree on the price is bit high these days. I already quit MU or JLU toys. Currently only collect Clone Wars line. (now just buying loose figures from ebay..around rm20-25 each if using combine shipment).

As for comic, right now I only bought TPB of certain books (download first whistling.gif, read & if good enough, wait for TPB. -- nothing can beat the feeling of holding the book & read. Read online feels a bit weird whistling.gif)

PS- Now I'm into more expensive hobbies - Diecast cars & Lego sweat.gif doh.gif

Stocks in local stores have been really erratic for a while now. Never spotted anything from the latest wave, only figures that I'm not interested in from the wave before. Still no Deadpool anywhere!

This is what I call lousy distribution! Even Hasblow admitted it in their recent Q&A with retailers/fans.

It's as if Hasbro is challenging us Malaysian collectors to stop buying.

I hope they will bring this Giant Sized X-Men pack over here. This version of Storm looks pretty cool. We certainly don't need the same Cyclops figure packed with others for the third time, they should put in Banshee or even Sunfire again.

I wonder if this Wolverine is the same one packed with the Hand Ninja or from the Wolverine Origins line.

You know, during the days of former Marvel E-i-C Joe Quesada's reign, he'd repeatedly challenged comic book fans to vote with their money (i.e. to support and buy a particular comic or not). In those days, there were still a lot of completists (people who buy every issue and every appearance of their favourite character or teams just for the sake of completing their run even though the storyline's taken a donwturn or certain high profile, fan favourite creative teams have ended their run and lesser known ones take over).

Prices of comics started to increase, and our weak Ringgit back then didn't help improve matters for comics fans. (in fact even now with a stronger Ringgit, prices of comics are still expensive because of "shipping costs" as the retailers will always say, just like price of roti canai increased when petrol price went up but I sure didn't see it come down when the latter decreased)

So what happens? If a top-selling comic in the 90s sold a million copies, just a few years ago the no. 1 selling comic sold 100K or slightly more. Fast forward to today, most comics average around 50-60K or less.

I guess comic fans really voted with their hard earned money.

(But of course comic readers have the options of more value for money and less expensive and nicely packaged omnibus and absolute collections, hardcovers, and trade paperbacks to satisfy their comic book reading habit.)

What about fans of action figures?

Do we vote with our Ringgit?

Marvel? They used to be a total arse when it comes to forcing people to buy the whole range of comics with their crossovers. Nak complete story, then buy the lesser titles too.

Wow ,the price increment for action figures debate still goes on .
Personally ,I wouldn't mind paying the additional RM2-3 provided Hasbro includes additional accesories and tighten up on their QC .Paint chipping ,sloppy paint jobs ,warping accesories or even limbs due to dynamic position while in packaging are simply unacceptable .Same goes for loose joints .

As for the X-Men pack ,I'll definitely skip it .The only new figure being Storm and a repaint of Warpath are not enuf to persuade me parting with my moolah .
Also ,Wolverine is a repaint of the Wolverine Origins version which I already owned .
On the other hand ,if it's a Jim Lee version of X-Men pack ,then it's on my buy list .

True, I'm skipping that as well since I have every fig there, minus the Storm.

Haahah, the never ending debate on $$$

it's true, prices never come down. i really really miss those toy biz days. u get a 6 inch, good articulation, great sculpt and a free comic too for rm29.90.

now u get a miserable 3 inch, recycled parts and endless repaint.

why didn't we get the variant ah???
