QUOTE(normeck @ Jan 17 2010, 09:09 PM)
Beardsley urges Liverpool to stick with Benitez

Former Anfield star Peter Beardsley believes Liverpool should stick by under-pressure manager Rafael Benitez.

And he insists the Spanish boss, who has signed more than 100 players in his five years on Merseyside, is the best man for the job even if Liverpool do not finish in the top four at the end of the season.

Beardsley puts most of Liverpool's woes this season down to injuries to their most influential players, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard.

Beardsley said: "He's (Benitez) signed a lot of players but look at most teams in the world. If they lost their stars then they would struggle. If you lost Rooney out of Manchester United's team they would struggle.

"The criticism is a bit over the top. I would definitely stick with him. What have they got to lose? It's only going to be the same players I would imagine for whoever takes over anyway. I would give him to the summer definitely and beyond then because he has done a brilliant job at Liverpool.

"They were really close last season to winning the league. When you look at the Premier League as a whole this season most of the top teams have lost three, four or five games which is unusual.

"He has got the respect of the players. In the main, most of the fans want him to stay.''

If the board decide Benitez, whose side drew at Stoke on Saturday after exiting the FA Cup against Reading in midweek, should lose his job, however, Beardsley believes Kop legend Kenny Dalglish would be the perfect man to take over.

Dalglish currently is working with the academy and Beardsley, speaking on Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme, said: "If they were to make a change that would be the perfect change. He (Dalglish) knows the club inside out. He and Sammy Lee get on like a house on fire so there wouldn't need to be wholesale changes. But at the moment I wouldn't do anything.''

Beardsley also believes there is no chance Gerrard, who was on the brink of joining Chelsea in 2005, will leave his hometown club.

He said: "When he turned down the Chelsea thing I think he committed himself to Liverpool for life and I genuinely believe he'll be there for life.''

EPL: Rafael Benitez, Stoke City - Liverpool

Teams
Liverpool
News of the World claims that Liverpool's owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, are divided on the subject of Rafael Benitez's future at the club.

The manager's position has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks - and especially since the Reds' humiliating defeat to Reading in the FA Cup on Wednesday.

Saturday's stalemate at Stoke City has only served to turn up the heat on the Spaniard, who is losing the favour of the fans with each passing disappointment on the pitch.

However, it is believed that the Kop board can do nothing for the time being, as the owners are at odds over whether or not Benitez should be given time to turn things around.

Hicks has voiced his support for the under-fire gaffer on numerous occasions this season, but it would appear that his partner - with whom he shares a frosty relationship - holds a different view.

An unnamed source is quoted as saying: "George Gillett believes the warnings about giving the manager a new five-year deal last season have proven true. He feels he was railroaded into making that decision and the team is now suffering because of it.

"At the very least, he believes the board should be having a healthy debate about the manager's position but it's evident Liverpool have backed themselves into a corner by publicly insisting it's not even up for discussion."

Danny Murphy feels Liverpool have gone backwards under Rafa Benitez since he left the club in 2004.

The experienced midfielder, who is now on the books of Fulham, believes the time has come for sweeping changes to be made at Anfield if they are to set out on the road to recovery.

The 32-year-old playmaker is of the opinion that in order for progress to be made, Benitez needs to be shown the door and a new manager brought in to help steady the ship.

With pressure mounting on the Spaniard with each passing game, it may only be a matter of time before Murphy's beliefs are shared by the Liverpool board.

A disastrous 2009/10 has underlined just how far away the club are from being regular contenders for major trophies, and much of the blame for their ongoing failings has been laid at Benitez's door.

"If you ask me has the time for Liverpool come to look for a new manager then I have to say 'yes'," Murphy told the News of the World.

"That is not me slating the guy because he forced me out when I didn't want to leave the club in the first place. Neither am I saying he is a bad manager. But over the last year or so the club have not moved forwards, in fact they are going backwards.
Mistakes

"I will always be a fan. I keep in touch with a lot of people close to the club and many think the time has come for a new manager. I agree providing that process doesn't cripple the club financially in terms of pay-offs."

He added: "Liverpool's problems at the moment are not just about some of the bad buys they have made for a lot of money over the last few years, but also the mistakes they've made in letting players go.

"I am not thinking of an obvious one like (Xabi) Alonso, but why on earth did Benitez sell players like Peter Crouch and Craig Bellamy when they are so reliant on Fernando Torres?

"It goes without saying the team have ended up relying too much on Torres, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

"Over the past two years Benitez has made too many bad decisions. History says he has won the Champions League and the FA Cup for Liverpool, although even then people can argue about the merit of those wins.

"What I do know is that after being there for this length of time the debate should no longer be about Liverpool qualifying for the Champions League or where they finish in the league but actually winning the title. And that's not going to happen again this season. So something has to change.

"People go on about how well Liverpool did last season by finishing runners up? So what? We finished second under Gerard Houllier with 80 odd points. Our team also won three big trophies in one season. So things haven't really got much better. If anything they have got worse."

under normal circustances, Rafa already sacked. But due to some financial issue, the owner still keep him. Already spend not much profit generated in. Expenses getting bigger and yet, we playing so terrible. Other big club already fire the manager already. I mean we could be bad bad situation, bcoz the debt. At the end we could sell players to generate fund, bcoz we aren't generate any fund. Lossing out CL, no trophies.

even if all EPL team loose (which is obviously impossible)..and we manage to get a point against a team like Stoke City, then, it's a disastrous week for me...as i rated the club so high... one of the best as what we used to be sometime ago...

we should n COULD hv won the game...my heart breakes when kuyt's header struck the post cry.gif , with spurs n villa drawing n manc losing..another extra 2 points would hv been extremely valuable in chase for 4th.. btw since when did we ever hv a player on the post while defending corners ? is it a first because it is against stoke where their strength lies in set pieces n long throw ins ? imo krygiakos well for what he is suppose to do..n skrtel showing signs of the reason y rafa actually did sign him..i hope he finds his form again.. because i blv he is a more complete defender compared to agger..although agger has a better all round play with the ability to pass n shoot..

It is not about how other team doing, it is how Liverpool play and performance matter the most, which is clearly disappointing.

It is like comparing who is worst rather than comparing who is better. So if you are in worst category, even you are No1 or the best in the worst cateogory, you are still worst, get what I mean.

Trace back 5-6 game back

Lose to bottom league club Portsmouth 2-0.
In Wolves game, if not the sending off by opponent, still struggling to get a goal
In Aston Villa game, lucky ball deflection create goal opportunity for Torres to score goal
In Reading game, Liverpool has 2 chance or 2 matches to get past a lower league team (Reading) to proceed in FA cup, yet fail to score a single goal, apart from Gerrard goal which is due to deflection as well
In Stoke game, it is mistake by GK the lead to goal.

Liverpool yet to score a proper goal or proper win since matches ago.

Insua was at right post of Reina when the Stoke goal went in. sleep.gif

How funny is that Liverpool players raised hand for offside (I believe it was), when you have 1 of your own player standing at the post.

well insua was more like guarding the post....not exactly the orthodox man-marking tactic where there will be 2 players on each post...insua is more or less around / near that post....and that's why Huth was ruled onside...if like u were implying that we've been playing zonal for 4 years now...that zonal that we used to play...would've ruled Huth offside at any given day.....

c
Think that would piss DukeRed off, as he has been banging on about mismatch of Insua against defenders. There was another instance in the game where the ball drops to Insua's zone only to be won by Tuncay, with Kuyt trying to get there before him. How many times have we seen this happening this season? Another moment of horror was when 3 Stoke players fighting against Reina to get to the cross.

For once I actually bothered how those clubs were doing. But thinking about it, had we won the game we would be in touching distance to 4th and Spurs won't be given a chance to end our CL hopes this week.

Anyway, good to hear Rafa chants during the match, although sad to say our home fans won't be as generous this Wednesday.
