against spurs, Liverpool need a pacy left back to cope with Lennon direct and tricky run. plus now with spurs implied early ball into the box, insua going to have his hands full against Lennon.

As for defence, Krgriakos would be useful against Crouch. his display against Stoke was impressive. Defoe will surely provide threat either from inside or outside the box. Mascherano and Lucas must be at their very best to contain Spurs creativity coming from the likes of Krncjar, Modric and Huddlestone.

Reports claimed Gerrard clashed with Benitez's assistant, Mauricio Pellegrino, over the hamstring strain which caused the midfielder's substitution, although Liverpool's manager yesterday denied any altercation. 'There was nothing,' said Benitez.

Forget Mourinho.

i do not quite think that rafa is one to ask for much input from his staff, even less so in a small converted room!
At any rate, i don't think that Sammy or the rest have the edge and personality to stand up to Rafa.

Added on January 17, 2010, 1:27 pmBtw, I've been reading a lot about Rafa not giving sufficient chances or failing to get the best out of players like Babel, Voronin, Pennant etc etc BUT when he does play them, more often than not they put in the worst, most dismal performances ever! shocking.gif

And these players aren't exactly poor either - they come highly rated or/and in their respective national teams.

What's going on?

Reina looked unsteady and struggling, especially with long balls. Ngog's  doh.gif terrible strength, control and passes...Poor performance from Aurelio and Degen too.

to be fair....it was almost like a rugby match out there for Ngog....usually torres would've made holding the ball up in the park easy coz that lad's a strong one...and he's got a heck of a leap too!

QUOTE(madmoz @ Jan 17 2010, 10:42 AM)
On the contrary, I think he was one of our better players last night.
Already mentioned it earlier in the old thread - it is not a stroke of genius starting defensively, fluking a goal and then put in your attacking options. Shouldn't it be attack, score and then defend lead with the defensive guys and not the other way round?  rclxub.gif
WTF is this? Copy pasta-ing your older post is the new black? First fk222, and now this fella. You guys are attention whores or just plain f*cking idiots? We read ya wall of text the first time. No need to repost it lo.
*
yea agreed maddie...shoudlve been attacking 1st...but then again...i thnik rafa just cant afford conceding another goal....hence the very very defensive lineup.... unsure.gif unsure.gif

Andy Townsend: This bunch at Liverpool are just so mediocre!

gerrard

Happier times: Gerrard lifts the European Cup in 2005

There are too many players who don't seem to have that big-match temperament or the ability to play for a massive club like Liverpool who have so much tradition.

Apart from keeper Pepe Reina, that warrior Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard because of his obvious qualities, and striker Fernando Torres, Liverpool have got very, very little. And those players look like they are weighed down so heavily with the responsibility of trying to drag Liverpool up the table.

The likes of Lucas, David Ngog, Emiliano Insua and Philipp Degen are all much of a muchness - they are good, steady professionals.

But while good and steady might suit Blackburn, Burnley or Hull, it should never, ever come into play when we are talking about Liverpool.

They have had quality players but they have been allowed to leave; players like Craig Bellamy, Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane who you would believe are good enough in the absence of key men.

A good squad for the big teams nowadays is vitally important.

You have to have quality and part of a manager's job is to juggle a squad and keep people happy.

There are a few players who must realise that they are never going to cut the mustard at Liverpool while Rafa Benitez is in charge.

Ngog is a young lad with potential. But is he good enough to lead the line for Liverpool in the absence of Torres? I don't think he is.

The jury is still out on Alberto Aquilani, but while the initial signs are that he is comfortable, 99tidy and neat in possession, I am not sure if he is outstanding in any particular area.

Dirk Kuyt is as honest and as generous in terms of his effort as anybody at the club, but he has become something of a utility player and I don't think he is ever going to be good enough to lead the line and take Liverpool where they need to go.

Ryan Babel, however, is a player I think Benitez should have got more out of. He is quick, powerful and talented. But it looks like he has gone between the ears.

He feels that whatever he does, it is not going to be good enough and he looks as if is fed up with trying to prove a point to the manager.

Lucas has got slightly better but I don't see how he is a regular Liverpool first-team player. That is a sign of where they are. When people like Lucas are playing every week, with all due respect, Liverpool can never get to where they want to be.

insua already attakin right back so no point bring in glen for tat kind of money.. he's good without a doubt but he come in a wrong situation where we nid 1 defensive sb..

yeah let's rest aquilani till end of season.. after WC then he'll be injured.. then rest him one season.. WOW season 2012 aquilani can fully fit.. then got Euro 2012 .. then again he injured one season... tat is f***..

*
noob...and when asked u said u r referring to fullbacks (i dunno whatever sideback or what crap u call them)...but then again it is flawed as glenny plays on the right, insua plays on the left....unless u r talking about a flexi fullback like Arbeloa that can play on either flank then that would make it a good rebutting statement....for saying Insua and Glenny interchangeably, clearly u've got ur right and left mixed up....or u r just plain noob...nuff said...how can ur post have any weight from now on since u cant even get the fundamentals right? tongue.gif u damn noob la wei...

haha! maddie...i think ryan babel is overrated la...who the feck plays with his head down, staring at his own legs and still tries to take on a player n squeeze out a pass....i did have high hopes on him....DID... laugh.gif no longer laugh.gif laugh.gif

that's the thing. he didn't always play while staring at his own legs. First time i saw him, I said to Duke and the rest in the pub that it was nice to finally have a direct attacking threat ala Robben, a winger who other teams would want to have on their team.

methinks the same is happening to Reira. Something in training is turning good direct talented wingers into muppets.

Brothers, i am kinda shock to see some british kops really backs lucas this much , taken from some article 's comment :

"Carra, Gerrard, Kuyt, have been shocking this season. Gerrard is the Captain! He should be leading by example.....no wonder we're performing so badly this season!
Lucas has been the most consistent player in the Liverpool team and fully deserves his starting berth. He is young and improving in every game. He has outshone Gerrard week in week out! Your narrow minded, blinkered opinion of him is purely based on the fact that you are so unwilling to criticise players such as Gerrard, Carra etc.
May i remind you that you were a "much of a muchness" player when you were plying your trade!!
Also, how dare you take a swipe at Insua, he's only a kid, this is his first season in which he has become the first choice at left back and like Lucas, he is still learning.
Ryan Babel has had his chances and never proved himself. He has no positional sense or spatial awareness when he is playing and he's just not cut out to play in the Premiership!"

U made me recall upon the 1st appearance Babel made against Chelsea. I have the same thought " Finally we had a winger who would run at defenders and make life difficult for left / right backs. " But as u said , it's really a big let down. I think Babel should be able to make it big and i mean big time .

If babel's overated, i am quite sure coaches like Frank Rjikard who has a reputation , wouldn't even try to take him in and chase him over the transfer market.

It's more of the manager's philosophy, me thinks. He doesn't really seem to be the kind of manager that allows his players to express themselves. He seems happy to have 9 defensively responsible outfield players and 1 striker. Even better if the striker is a 'defensive-striker.'

EDIT: Grammatical error.
