Whoa what are you eating over there? $100 per week on groceries alone? 25 is probably too conservative an estimate I suppose (used to be adequatethat before the inflation). Now I'm getting away with 40-50 per week but it's because I'm earning my income now and hence being less stingy compared to student time.

Buy in bulk to save... when there's $1/litre long life milk on offer, go grab a carton and will last you for 2 months. That's 50% savings. Same with stuff like rice... if there's no offer, it can hit $25-30 per kg but again you'll be able to find <$20/kg when the timing is right.

For those in Hobart... check out No Frills Wholesale Cash&Carry... it's like makro in M'sia. Grab stuff in bulk then split it among your friends/housemates.

That's very informative...so does that mean that I have to apply for a TFN and submit it to my bank regardless of I'm going to work here in Aussie or not so that I can collect all the interest that I gained from my deposits?

Yes.

hmm, we have loads of scholarship for rural health placements but wait! it's not for international students =( dangit. Um, yeah, i'm not on any scholarships. I'm going on 11k inclusive of my bed chair table table lamp + some other stuff that I need. If you need an exact figure on the rental+internet+elec,gas+food, it'll be <10k =D well yeah i took the initiative to count, or the fact that i'm just bored. >< so you've decided? =D

I would definitely love to come to Australia, the only problem I'm facing is money. Are there any agencies that offers study loan for student studying overseas?
There's still a few scholarship for current international students right? Who support your fees in Australia?
Well, it's good to keep track of how much you spent, that way you won't spend 100k...LOL
What course are studying in UTAS?

Europe? Reasons? Europe's currency is like 1 point higher than Australia, isn't that going to make the cost higher?

Notice the difference between the 2 posters.
One has done some research before coming into this thread, the other just blindly asking questions expecting to be spoonfed. What is the point of having rules when a) they are not followed b) They cannot be enforced. This is why Malaysia will never move on.

Re CarotMilk, A$12,000 - A$14,500 seems to be a reasonable cost of living in Hobart, considering that JPA gives their scholars there A$11,500/year in living allowance. I can't say for the university and the course, but maybe onelove89 could give some insight into the university.

I need some comments about griffith university as I received the offer letter from this university and I'm still considering it. The website doesn't display the actual fee and details of several off-campus accommodation (eg. student hostel) and I really need this information for future use. It's always better to ask a student rather than an education agent. Moreover, I'd be happy to meet some new friends here who are currently studying in griffith, especially in the campus located in Mt. Gravatt.

Please be understanding, thanks smile.gif

@caspersky,

When i was browsing the Australian Tax Office website to apply for a TFN, i come across this message:

If you are a non-resident of Australia for tax purposes, you do not need a TFN if you only receive:

* interest from an Australian bank account
* dividends from Australian shares, or
* royalty payments.

Source: http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content....2.htm&page=2&H2

So do I still need a TFN if i just wanna to receive full interest from the bank and not working?

I'm no saving guru ler... just don't like spending extra on things when there are so many offers going around, especially when the various supermarkets are having regular price wars. My weekly expenditure now is much more compared to student time due to extra spendings like fuel and eating out more often due to work(and chilling out after work), and of course paying higher rent and bills etc.

Previously as a student I was much more stingy... $30/week for groceries is more than enough. A huge bulk of your expenses will go towards rent, utilities and transport, but with good self control $1K per month is easily achievable.

Studying in Australia may not necessarily be cheaper than in Europe esp UK where Sterling is at an all time low. The costs of studying in big cities like Sydney or Melbourne (esp UniMelb whose fees are higher than most other Aussie Unis) are pretty heavy as well; however places like Tassie is still considerably affordable.

^ Capitalism at its best.

This is why I buy most of my staple food like bread, eggs, veges, jams, sugar/flour from Aldi. Much cheaper. Woolies and Coles are only good for bulk purchases during offers, you go there during non-offer period you'll curse at their prices.

I still prefer the experience of buying in open markets like Vic market but it's further away from where I'm at after moving house.

oh just apply for scholarships here! There're heaps of scholarships for international students somehow, alot of my friends are on partial scholarship. I got offered partial scholarship for biomed in utas too, but i rejected it. I'm in medicine, and there's no scholarship for internationals (not that i know of) >< not even the rural practice scholarships.

I'm keeping it under 1k per month =) But I'll definitely go to the place in moonah to have a look, though it's so far from my place =/ there's not much IGA here too, I love IGAs =P well i usually do my shopping there in perth =P

Wah, you guys make me feel real guilty about my weekly grocery spendings.

So far, I have bought weekly groceries twice and the first time, I spent about AUD40 then last week I spent about AUD70 >___<

I get all my stuff from coles and already I buy whichever items are specials.

But I still manage to keep my monthly expenses somewhere around or below AUD100 p/w.

Dunno, maybe I should start examining my spendings. ngeh. rclxub.gif

same here mate!
Aldi somehow are cheap, for most stuff but not all.
Capitalism = Choice

Vic market is good, but sometimes if you know the average price; you will notice its expensive of certain food staples. Also, it all about timing. laugh.gif

but then again, this doesn't apply to all Australia. If you are in Perth; price varies in term of location. But recent so call flatten the market had been working well. Pushing all Coles & woolies to be same price in all WA.

Prolly, sooner ACCC need to bring in more Supermarket & allow localisation of supermarkets like IGA which support local produce to come to front line.

Monopoly at its best in Aus = Woolies vs Coles laugh.gif
