fly to sydney. holiday a little bit and then fly up using virgin air or jetstar or something cheap. unless you are in a rush. check with a travel agency. they will tell you the flight plans really quickly.
*
hmm..think will not holiday there...on a tight budget b4 i receive money from my scholarship..Is it better to book thru travel agency? Or it will b the same if i do it myself.. really noob here..1st time traveling out of the country..

Do you guys ever read before typing out your mindless thoughts?

If you want to fly down to Canberra using Qantas, you have to go down to Singapore, then take a Qantas flight, SIN-SYD-CBR. Alternatively, fly down to Sydney (or Melbourne) using any airline that suits your fancy, then connect to the many flights to Canberra.

I highly doubt you can do these things online through the respective airlines websites. The best bet, ESPECIALLY for a first timer, is to go through an travel agent, who will deal with the connecting flights for you. At least with using a full service airline your luggage would be checked through to Canberra.
*
my bad..misinterpret what i read..thought canberra's airport is jz dealing with domestic flights within aus and therefore is not an international airport...

I'd highly recommend Tung Shin. Only cost rm92 for the whole thing, and got my visa approved within a week. Try to go there early on a Saturday morn to avoid the KL jam and long queue.
*
thanks a lot for the tip..early as in 7 something or 8 something?

if u want it fast, go for e-health. I got my visa in one day. RM180, no jam, no need to wait.
hahahaha
*
why is it that e-health will b no jam, no need to wait? i thought e-health is that the medical officer send your report electronically? Or maybe i read wrongly...

visa is electronic, no?

heheh, i have about 2 and a half weeks and i'm just dumping random stuff into my bag. Gonna take half of it out later XD

A lot of my friends tell me they are living out of their suitcase already hahahaha.

I hate the packing process. Have to wash, iron and pack. Then when we arrive the clothes are all wrinkly and messed up again -___-
*
So the electronic visa how? Print out the email containing the number? Or just write down the number some where?

Reporting in from canberra...just moved into my new house after being house-less for 1 week..it's really a disaster here in Canberra..
By the way, which is the best telco for international calls? i'm using 3 prepaid now..the sound quality isn't that good, the rate is expensive ($2+ per min) and there's a $100 limit for international calls..

FML, I signed on for a contract already. Want to change to Optus also can't now T_T

My idea was to test with prepaid 1st, see how much i need, then only sign up for a plan...still thinking whether wanna stick with 3..when i read optus's cap plan, international call is not included in the cap...unless you're not going to call back malaysia frequently or you always skype...

try this go call back if your parents don't want to use skype http://www.lebara-mobile.com.au/en/

I not sure about coverage in Canberra but in Melbourne seem ok. Most of my friends use it for international call. It's just only 1 cent per minute!!!!! Basically they have 2 mobile phones. One for local either 3 or optus (mostly optus), 1 for international call which they use lebara.

Wow..that's really cheap...i'll try it right away today after lab...i'm looking for ISP now...anyone have experience with the wireless broadband here? How is the quality like?

Cut her some slack. She is only asking opinions from people studying at Griffith, not seeking direct answers regarding something specific. You can't expect her to send an email to Griffith asking 'hey i'm thinking to study at your uni is that good?', right? And by the way, i suggest that the "rules" be simplified and be more 'straight to the point'. It seems to me that they are more like lecturing essays than rules.

Oh and i'd like to provide some info regarding TFN. First of all, it is not 'mandatory' to have your TFN to be able to legally work in Australia.(you need a working permit for that)However, it is strongly recommended that you have one because if you don't provide your TFN to your bank and employer, your interests and salary will be taxed at 46.5%.(45%+1.5% medical levy) That sucks doesn't it? So go apply for one before you start working.

Secondly, earning less than $6000 per year means your earnings are tax-free, it has nothing to do with eligibility of tax refund. Even if you have earned only $30 this year, if $5 was deducted from your pay as tax, you are eligible for a tax refund.

The Australian tax system is comprehensive and very well designed. For all of you working out there, from July to October every year ATO will be holding Tax Help Program, which is a program designed to help low income taxpayers to lodge their tax returns. The service is totally free of charge and most of the universities will have participated in this program. Ask your student guild about this.

Source? Australian Taxation Office, and i was a Tax Help Volunteer last year.
*
That's very informative...so does that mean that I have to apply for a TFN and submit it to my bank regardless of I'm going to work here in Aussie or not so that I can collect all the interest that I gained from my deposits?

Yes.

@caspersky,

When i was browsing the Australian Tax Office website to apply for a TFN, i come across this message:

If you are a non-resident of Australia for tax purposes, you do not need a TFN if you only receive:

* interest from an Australian bank account
* dividends from Australian shares, or
* royalty payments.

Source: http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content....2.htm&page=2&H2

So do I still need a TFN if i just wanna to receive full interest from the bank and not working?
