AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

just don't take the Ljajic issue so serious. May be he is really not that good that we saw in YT. So it's better let him grow there rather than wasting his talents in the reserves.

Park hoping to hit goal trail

QUOTE
Park Ji-sung has vowed to get on the scoresheet more after recovering from a knee injury that has sidelined him for most of the season.

The 28-year-old played his first full game for Manchester United in almost four months in their 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Carling Cup on Tuesday.

Although he has been relatively happy with his performances since his comeback, the midfielder admits he needs to improve his goal tally if he is to push for a regular first-team spot.

"I need to improve my finishing. I need more goals," Park told the Manchester Evening News.

"I study the other players in training, particularly the forwards, and I look at how they are scoring goals. What do they do when they finish a chance? I know I can get better and will get better personal results.

"The likes of Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Ryan Giggs - I can see it live every day. I don't have to sit in front of a TV to study it."

Composure

The South Korea international believes the key is to become more relaxed in front of goal.

"They are more confident and composed in front of goal than I am," he added.

"I have to stop rushing things. I have to be composed in my mind and slow things down. I think that will make me a better finisher.

"In training I feel a lot more confident about how that side of my game is going. I think I am capable of scoring eight to ten goals in a season. I believe I can do that if I have a full season free of injuries."

The last 5 goals for the Goals of The Decade is out and as expected, 3 are from CR smile.gif

Goals of the Decade: P-T

QUOTE
P. Cristiano Ronaldo, United 2 Portsmouth 0, League, OT, 30.01.08
The Portuguese flyer takes the free-kick to a new height with this searing 30-yard arrow that gets up over an eight-man wall with ease and dips just enough to fly in a fraction below the crossbar. If there was a Noble Set-Piece Prize, this would win it.

Q. Paul Scholes, United 1 Barcelona 0, Champions League, OT, 29.04.08
Ronaldo's first chance to open up and run at Barcelona pays off when his run was halted on the edge of the area, and the ball falls to Scholes to strike a humdinger on the bounce right into the top corner. The perfect start to a gripping semi-final second leg.

R. Federico Macheda, United 3 Aston Villa 2, League, OT, 05.04.09
The 17 year-old debutant becomes an instant Old Trafford hero when he scores a sensational injury-time winner. Receiving the ball with his back to goal, he wrong-foots his marker before curling a superb shot past Brad Friedel and into the far corner.

S. Ronaldo, Porto 0 United 1, Champions League, Estadio do Dragao, 15.04.09
Cristiano has gunpowder in his boots as he booms a 40-yard cannonball into the net. The Porto keeper doesn’t have a prayer, despite the distance.

T. Ronaldo, Arsenal 1 United 3, Champions League, Emirates Stadium, 05.05.09
The Reds' number seven impishly backheels a pass to Park before high-tailing it towards the Gunners' area. He reaches his destination at the same time as Rooney's perfectly-weighted pass, and drills a fine shot high into Almunia's goal.

The only goals I'll consider to be a top 5 worthy are the CR Porto, Macheda and the Scholes' goal. I feel there're better goals that we've scored in the last decade.

Scholes' volley against Villa and RVN incredible dribble vs Fulham should be the other 2.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy, United 3 Fulham 0, League, Old Trafford, 22.03.03
Collecting a pass in his own half, Ruud turns away from Sylvain Legwinski and sets off with purpose towards goal. Four players attempt to stop him but the RVN juggernaut roars on regardless. He takes a touch and sidefoots it past Maik Taylor.

Wayne Rooney, United 2 Newcastle 1, League, Old Trafford, 24.04.05
A defender's header drops into the path of Rooney, who wallops the ball first time with every ounce of strength he has. The shot bends and dips before crashing in off the bar.

Paul Scholes, Villa 0 United 3, League, Villa Park, 23.12.06
A Ryan Giggs corner is headed high up and out of the box… and that’s where the good news stops for Villa, because Paul Scholes booms a terrific volley that thunders in off the underside of the crossbar.

Wayne Rooney, United 2 Portsmouth 1, FA Cup, OT, 27.01.07
A top first touch earns Wayne space 25 yards from goal, he advances menacingly and then fools everyone – not least David James in the Pompey goal – by executing a sublime chip into the top corner. A classic counter-attack.

Wayne Rooney, United 4 Bolton 1, League, OT, 17.03.07
A Bolton throw-in falls to Ronaldo inside the Reds' box before a neat piece of interplay with Rooney sends the Portuguese into enemy territory. With defenders backing off, Ronny slips the ball to his left, Wayne takes a touch and dinks the ball over the goalkeeper. Devastating.

Ronaldo, Porto 0 United 1, Champions League, Estadio do Dragao, 15.04.09
Cristiano has gunpowder in his boots as he booms a 40-yard cannonball into the net. The Porto keeper doesn’t have a prayer, despite the distance.

If Becks and Giggsy combo freekick was converted into goal it'd be easily on the GotD list too, sadly it was well saved by Schmeichel.

Is there any other good partnership?

Of course Brown and Vidic!

Here's sheep319 Line-up Prediction™ for tomorrow's match

Kuzco
Gazza - Vazza - Brazza - Ezza
G.Neville - Vidic - Brown - Evra
Ronaldo
Valencia - Carrick - Fletcher - Giggs
Berbatov - Rooney

Anderson shined during Carling Cup, so I don't see why he might not start. Prolly Gibson or him will be making a cameo after half time.

As always, Obotak will come on for Giggs, 70th minute.

Macheda comes on and replaces Berbatov.

Edwin fit, but trio still out
QUOTE
Edwin van der Sar is available for Saturday's trip to West Ham having missed the last three games through injury, but John O'Shea, Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand are still out.

O'Shea is struggling from a dead leg which he suffered whilst on international duty with the Republic of Ireland last month, while Evans has a calf problem.

Ferdinand, who has not featured since the end of October, remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from a persistent back injury.

"Rio is progressing with his treatment," revealed Reds' assistant boss Mike Phelan, who stood in for Sir Alex at Friday's pre-match press conference.

"He’s as optimistic as he can be. We haven’t set a target for him to be back yet. We just need to make sure that when he is back, he is available for the rest of the season.

"We still have a problem with Evans and O'Shea. Jonny's calf is responding slowly to treatment, while John is still suffering from a dead leg that doesn’t seem to be improving as quickly as we expected.

"We've got Edwin back though - he's been training and is available along with the other goalkeepers."

Phelan also revealed that Owen Hargreaves is making good progress with his rehabilitation from a long-term knee problem, but insisted the Reds will not be rushing the midfielder back until he's completely ready.

"It's a sort of softly, softly approach with Owen," said Phelan. "He’s been out a long time now, but he’s back on the training ground. He has a lot of rehab work to do which is going to be a continuous thing for him now.

Edwin fit, but trio still out

"He's doing some ball work out on the training ground and his fitness is looking very good, but obviously he hasn’t got into a big group situation yet.

"He’s as keen as mustard to get back in there with the squad and the time is definitely getting shorter until he is back in training fully."

Brown: We won't be distracted by City threat

QUOTE
Wes Brown insists Manchester United will not be distracted from their relentless hunt for silverware despite the emergence of Manchester City as wealthy new challengers.

According to one club president in Europe, United are a club in "financial crisis", a concept that would position United as the paupers to City's princes. But Brown believes United's intention to challenge for titles year after year won't be derailed by increased competition from their bitter rivals.

United head to West Ham on Saturday looking to close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea to a couple of points before Carlo Ancelotti's men tackle City at Eastlands half an hour later. Yet it is the Carling Cup that remains the talk of the city, as it pits United against City in a two-legged semi-final where the prize is a place at Wembley.

While United have been there on numerous occasions in recent years, for City it would represent their first major final since 1981 and confirmation the multi-million pound investment of Sheikh Mansour may eventually change the landscape of the English game. But the Red Devils have no intention of simply standing aside.

"You are aware of the shifts in power but we have always been up there, which is a good achievement,'' Brown told Inside United. "We set out to challenge for the title at the start of every season and to continue doing that we have to keep working hard.

"City have got a lot of money to spend and have therefore bought good players and will probably continue to do so. That means they are going to be challenging - they have to be with the players they have. We have just got to keep doing what we are doing, continue improving and hopefully we can keep on doing as well as we have over the last few years.''

Having placed his trust in youth to get United past Tottenham in midweek, Ferguson will bring back all his big names at the weekend, although there is still a question mark over Edwin van der Sar, who missed the win at Portsmouth last weekend after suffering a bang on the knee in a collision with Everton's Tim Cahill the week before.

However, it is the decision not to pursue a stated interest in Partizan Belgrade youngster Adem Ljajic that has vexed many United fans. Old Trafford sources insist there is no truth in the claim by Partizan president Dragan Djuric that United - who have confirmed debts of £790million - are in the midst of a "financial crisis''.

That has not stopped questions being raised by the Manchester United Supporters' Trust, who have been fiercely opposed to the Glazer family since they completed their controversial takeover in 2005.

"The true picture will not be clear until after the January transfer window but with the £80m Ronaldo transfer fee plus the supposed £25-30m annual transfer kitty a spend of £100m would effectively be break-even and supporters will rightly be asking where has the money gone when they've been forced to pay more and more through the huge ticket price rises in recent years,'' said MUST chairman Duncan Drasdo.

"If that money is not reinvested in the club, many will see it as little better than theft and feel entitled to demand ticket prices are slashed to pre-takeover levels.''

If VDS is really ready, don't mind giving him a game tho. Kuszczak can still play in the last UCL group match against wolfsburg. Or maybe vice-versa, kuszczak for EPL then VDS for wolfsburg smile.gif

IMO, VDS can prove more of a handful in the UCL because we must win that UCL game to top the table. Kuszczak is on form now, and i dont see why we cant let him continuosly shine. just my opinion though

Foster THAT bad ah? He got the reflex, but do mistakes. Gomes does to, but still be the #1 at Spurs. And Redknap is bidding for Foster. The gaffer know more than we do, so I put my trust on SAF.

aside from goals, i think he's doing well atm....the problem with him now is to adjust his running and positioning since he doesn't possess the same speed he had 5 years ago....once he got the adjustment, he will surely be scoring goals after goals, maybe he can ask some tips from Giggsy lol

Ljajic decision explained

QUOTE
Mike Phelan has revealed that paperwork issues were the main reason behind United's decision not to sign Adem Ljajic in January.

Speaking in Friday’s pre-match press conference, the assistant manager said the Reds had been advised that gaining a work permit for the young Serbian may have proved difficult.

“We went down the road of trying to obtain a work permit,” Phelan said. “We made a tentative approach to get one, and what we got back from the Home Office (or these people you deal with) is that we couldn’t get it through in time for when we had to make a decision on Adem in January.”

“The point then is do you lay out the money for Adem when there is the possibility you could or couldn’t get the work permit? We decided it wasn’t the time to do it.

“I’m not sure how we’ve left the situation to be honest, the manager would be better to answer that, but as it stands at the moment Adem Ljajic won’t be joining us in January.”

Rumours have circulated in the press that a lack of funds were responsible for United’s decision to pull out of the deal, but the Reds’ assistant manager was quick to quash that notion. He insisted that the approach to obtain a work permit is proof that money is not an issue.

“It’s not to do with money that I know of, I don’t think it’s an issue. We definitely went to try and get the work permit or made a point to get it and we were told it would be an issue, so we couldn’t make a decision from that point on.”

With United’s policy of producing a healthy number of youngsters, Phelan admitted that it was slightly disappointing to not have the chance to bring Ljajic to the club, but with the rules that are in place, it was just unfortunate that the deal could not go through.

“As you can see we’ve got young players and we’re a team that requires young players to come through and develop and bring into the first team. We’ve looked at Adem and he has the potential to do that but you can’t fight these things sometimes.

“Some people you can get work permits for, some you can’t. Adem fell into the category of being hard to get a work permit for, so we made the decision (not to pursue it).”

Bummer with that deal. Hope it's not a sign of bad things happening regarding our finances. But then we wouldn't be able to afford Valencia. Just hope he doesn't go on to be a world beater if we never go back for him. We have lots of youngsters and players in an attacking role, so it doesn't hurt us much right now.

Btw, if any of you guys have RM3.8k, might want to check out this thread:

Trip to Manchester, 4 days, 3 nights.
The planned match that we are attending is as below:

a) Manchester United vs West Ham February 27, 2010, or
b) Manchester United vs Fulham March 13, 2010, or
c) Manchester United vs Liverpool March 20, 2010

For the first group, we limit the number of entries and it is based on first come first serve. However priority will be given to those who are active in activities and forums in mymanutd.com. Only 12 seats available only. If there is overwhelming response, the management will consider offering a total of up to 18 seats. Book your seat now.
8 already confirmed.. I wish I have that sort of money. Time to save up I guess for the next trip, if there is ever one.

Match Pack: West Ham

Gianfranco Zola was an occasional thorn in United's side in his playing days, but he's yet to damage the Reds as a manager…
QUOTE
Form guide: The term inconsistency is one that can certainly be applied to the Hammers. In the few years since they were promoted back to the top flight in 2005, they have achieved mid-table mediocrity, survived a relegation battle and latterly claimed a top-half finish in 2008/09. Their 5-3 victory over Burnley last week was only their third win of this campaign and they currently lie seventeenth in the league table. West Ham's failure to keep a clean sheet since August will also encourage United following the Reds' convincing wins over Everton and Portsmouth.

Ins and outs
: Kieron Dyer will be hoping to feature after making a comeback in West Ham's reserves recently, but star striker Carlton Cole is expected to be out for a number of weeks with a knee injury. Valon Behrami will also be unavailable as he is due to undergo surgery. United have no fresh injury problems from the midweek Carling Cup tie, but the existing ones remain at the back - John O’Shea, Jonny Evans and Ferdinand will all miss the clash.

Star man: Vice-captain Scott Parker is the heartbeat of the West Ham team. He has represented England at every level, and was voted Player of the Year by Hammers fans last season. He loves a tackle and can be creative on the ball too.

Manager: As a player, Gianfranco Zola netted three goals against the Reds in his Chelsea days, but has lost his two games against them as West Ham boss. He is still a rookie in management terms, having only been in charge of the Italian Under-21 side before moving to Upton Park in 2008, but ninth spot in the league last season suggests Zola has a lot to offer in the top flight.

Referee
: Northamptonshire’s Peter Walton will have the whistle on Saturday. Both teams won their last matches with him in charge, and his last game between the two sides was last season when United won 2-0 at Old Trafford. Perhaps there will be plenty of goals, as Walton oversaw Tottenham’s 9-1 demolition of Wigan nearly a fortnight ago.

Rivals watch
: It’s another important weekend for United’s rivals this weekend, as Chelsea travel to Eastlands in the Saturday evening kick off. Liverpool will hope their revival continues as they play Blackburn at Ewood Park. Arsenal host Stoke and Aston Villa play Hull; Tottenham are at Everton on Sunday.

Can't be true. Evra wasn't even born in 1984.

Anyway, where is Hargreaves. Haven't got news of him lately. Thought he started training since November? I would like to see him get on the bench in the next few games.

AIEH? WHY IS OBERTAN NOWHERE TO BE SEEN!?

And Vidic not starting, kinda understandable, just came back from injury (or whatever)

Erk. Neville is so damn risky leh as defender.

ohmy.gif

And 4-3-3 again. I hope midfield can cope up with Zola's team. BUT WHY NO OBERTAN!!!!!!!!

1445: Nemanja Vidic is ill apparently, while Rafael and Fabio, or Rabio as they're collectively known, are both injured, hence Gaz Neville at centre-back and Darren Fletcher at right-back.

I think - because he is young, and someone need to command the defense. Brown is not that commander material.

overall, i can see all our midfield stepping up to drive in goals. Valencia to take over Ronaldo's usual position, always in the middle unless need him to cross. Rooney's scoring streak is on. Gibson is on firreeee!!

OH MEIN GOTT THAT IS ONE SEXY BOOT FROM GIBSON!

Anyway, amazing victory, and to SAF, you cannot win with 4-5-1.

Partner Rooney and you can get 2 goals in quick successions.

Learn from your mistakes SAF. Please.

BUT WHY WASN'T OBERTAN THERE!??!?!?!

MIDFIELDER MAY QUIT UNITED
Scholes considering retirement
QUOTE

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has revealed he is considering quitting the club at the end of the season, fearing he can no longer compete at the highest level.

Paul Scholes has struggled for form this season.

While 36-year-old team-mate Ryan Giggs continues to be considered an integral part of Sir Alex Ferguson's side despite his age, Scholes has struggled for form of late amid concerns he may soon be surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

And with the the emergence of Darren Fletcher, Anderson, Michael Carrick and Darron Gibson, Scholes - whose current deal expires at the end of this season - admits the end could be near.

"I wouldn't say I am playing some of my best football and I don't always feel I am making as much of a contribution as I would like," Scholes said. "I always preferred it when I was playing regularly and scoring a lot more goals. Now, it's different. I play once every two or three weeks and I can only hope to do well when I get the chance.

"I just have to be OK with that. I don't have a choice. Obviously, every player wants to play every week, but I know now it can't always happen. You do think about the future, but I'm not too sure. I'll just carry on with the way it's going at the moment and we'll see what happens come the end of the season."

Scholes, 35, has played 619 times for United scoring 145 goals, including a fierce strike against West Ham on Saturday.

Sir Alex Ferguson has made no secret about his desire to keep his old heads at Old Trafford, whose experience he sees as providing a vital contribution to the club on and off the pitch. But while Giggs, 36, has continued to flourish, Scholes has not been able to maintain the form that has made him consistently one of the best midfielders in the Premier League over the past 15 years.

"The secret of Ryan's success is his sheer professionalism," Scholes said. "He's been a top player for nearly 20 years. I would have thought he's probably the best player this club has ever had.

"He just keeps going stronger and stronger each time he plays and seems to create a goal or score one himself. He's just been fantastic to play with. I think when Ryan retires he won't just be regarded as one of the greats, he'll be the one and only.

"To be here 20 years and still going strong and playing as well as ever, I think that, when he retires, he will be the one who stands out."

Great performance, especially Scholes and Gibson's goal

and our injury list for defender is adding on, certainly not a good sign for the upcoming fixture sweat.gif
Ferdinand, Evans, Gary, O'shea, Twins sweat.gif
hopefully Brown and Vidic is available for next match against Wolfsburg

Injury on defence players is getting worse, start with 3 defenders but end with only Evra left.
Evra has to play as central defender somemore rclxub.gif
Good thing is our midfield able to play as backup defence.
Gibson goal is just too quick & powerful, i cant really see what happen during the real time played. I thought Giggs miss passed then the next thing I know is the ball in the net with a drop death keeper on the ground sweat.gif

Fergie's massive squad depth will starts to show its impact from now on...probably we will see some young defenders coming into the squad....and i think Cory Evans will get his chance

Saw that, everyone was laughing.
Fair play to him. Looked solid, but tbh, he's been solid most times he got a chance, except for his kicking(now and then) and his nervy look.

i cant remember when's the last time we are stretch so badly defensively..almost all our defenders are out..hopefully vidic could be back for wolfsberg match as there a chance we might miss the knockout stage..a draw would be enough..if we lose without scoring a goal and if cska win by 4 goals without reply, then we can join pool at europa league..correct me if i'm wrong..i'm writing this based on the tables shown in soccernet..

We already gone through to the knockout round. If we lose and CSKA win, the will look at head to head result which we won and draw against CSKA so even we lose 10-0 and cska won 10-0 we still qualify.

BTW, good result yesterday now we are only 2 points below them.

now the back 4 is really crucial.
MU need to win against wolfsburg in CL.

last time, 1st game on the league against chelsea for their 1st match under mourinho ... keano has to play as centre back.

SAF made it clear that Vidic who is down by a flu will be ready for Wolfsburg game. To fill in the othr CB position, he will consider using Carrick again. And of course, fletcher to take over the right back.
I think if im not wrong, we played 7 midfield yesterday.. Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Anderson, Gibson, Valencia, Giggs

2-7-1 line up haha

as much as i love bragging a win of 4-0, i think we should keep our humble. Look at chelsea.. every game win 4-0,then lose to manCity..

btw, its clear that chelsea's diamond formation is a piece of crap. Easily exploited by both Manchester United and Manchester City. Watch other team place in pacy man to make Ballack useless.

I have no idea who else can become a defender in my mind. D:

Injury woes intensify

QUOTE
United’s desperate defensive injury problems were only exacerbated at Upton Park - the term 'down to the bare bones' barely does the situation justice.

Sir Alex Ferguson could be without seven players for the trip to Wolfsburg on Tuesday, and the extent of the issue is measured by the fact that the United boss is anxiously waiting to see if Nemanja Vidic recovers from a bout of flu to partner Michael Carrick in the centre of defence.

Along with Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, John O’Shea, Jonny Evans, Rafael and Fabio all missed Saturday’s 4-0 win over West Ham, while Gary Neville and Wes Brown were forced off during the match to add to an already depleted rearguard.

“Losing defenders the way we are doing at the moment is a bit of a headache to us,” admitted the boss. “Nemanja Vidic was out with flu, meaning we had to put Gary Neville at centre-back and then he goes off after half an hour. Then Wes Brown came off at the end.

“I don’t know how we’re going to get a back four together for Tuesday. I’m hoping Nemanja will be OK and I will probably play Michael Carrick with him in defence.”

Carrick didn’t look out of place at centre-half against his former club, althoug Wolfsburg's forwards Edin Dzeko, Grafite and Obafemi Martins, pose a more potent threat.

“Michael came in and did very well, we were very pleased with that,” added Sir Alex. “The reason we put Michael on the bench this afternoon was to cover us in event of anything happening to the back four.

“He has the height, the composure, the pace and the experience to play there. There was an option to play Ritchie De Laet, but away from home against West Ham – it’s a difficult place to go to. I felt that an experienced player was important.

"I would actually like to have played Michael [in midfield] from the start because he’s in good form. But I felt like I had to err on the side of caution, and I’m glad I did.”

MAN OF THE MATCH: Paul Scholes
The United midfielder has been accused of showing his age in the last year, but he pulled the strings for the champions at Upton Park and his goal was crucial in setting up their victory. He picked up his customary yellow card in the second half to complete his day.

9 defenders for two positions. Only Vida(still not confirmed) and Evra available. Plus De Laet. Rio, Evans, O'Shea, Gary, Wes, Fabio, Rafael all out. And we're up against Dzeko next. Ridiculous. We can't just go out and buy another defender or two just to act as covers. Thank god he doesn't have pace. But still let's hope Vida would actually be available. Maybe the reason VDS doesn't play is because he's under special training just in case Vida misses out to combat Dzeko in the air.

Partizan rue United Ljajic transfer pull-out

QUOTE
Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade will suffer a serious financial blow after Manchester United opted out of signing their midfielder Adem Ljajic, club officials have revealed.

United said earlier this week they were no longer planning a bid for the 18-year-old due to work permit issues. Reports say Ljajic would have cost the Premier League champions £10 million.

"Manchester United's decision will inevitably force us to change our business plans, meaning that we will have to sell more players than we would like to in January," Partizan's director Ivan Tomic told Belgrade media on Saturday.

"This is a heavy financial blow to us and it certainly hasn't made anyone at the club happy. As far as Ljajic is concerned, he is obviously disappointed but I am sure he will bounce back very quickly and prove his worth, he has a great future."

General Secretary Darko Grubor added: "It is a shame the deal fell through but life goes on and we will survive without the money we would have got from selling Ljajic."

Partizan are chasing their third consecutive league title and are one point behind leaders Red Star Belgrade with two games left before the December-February break.

They are at home to fourth-placed OFK Belgrade on Sunday behind closed doors after they were punished along with Red Star for crowd violence during their derby last Saturday.

Usually permit isn't a big issue, we should be able to appeal even if it failed..but i can't see a reason to fail applying a permit for that lad. I don't think it is due to financial problem as well, if he is really a future superstar, 10m is nothing compared to 17-18 m we paid for anderson and nani right? I'm sure the media is faster than us when it comes to the news about glazer limiting SAF's funds in the transfer market. We didn't even spend half of ronaldo's 80m sale this season..

Even if he comes, he'll end up a season or two in the reserves or maybe loaned out. Just look at our young midfielders, Obertan, Gibson, Anderson, Tosic. Even the first team players like fletcher and valencia are only 24 and 23 tongue.gif

Oh mai, injury crisis again. Seems like the physio team hiring alot of hot nurses there brows.gif brows.gif Gibson and Scholes, they are different type of players and I really feel glad for Gibson as before this the hype is surrounding Obertan and he really need those goals to state his point on claiming the first team action. If only Nani will learn from Gibson, take every chance presented and push it to the best.

Coming UCL match scary la wei, we need to secure top seed in order to avoid big team. I don't want to face RM or Barca at the first round sad.gif

Any teams that make it into the knockout stages will be dangerous regardless they are the big clubs or not. Topping the group will ensure we playing 2nd leg at home soil which will give us the slight advantage.

Phelan hints at Dzeko move

QUOTE
Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has hinted that the club may make a move for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.

The Bosnia international was close to joining AC Milan in the summer with Arsenal also reportedly interested, but Wolfsburg held firm.

The 23-year-old has continued to impress this term and scored against the Red Devils when the German champions visited Old Trafford in the UEFA Champions League earlier this season.

Dzeko has added two more goals in Europe since then and, having bagged 36 goals in all competitions last campaign, has notched 13 in 21 games this time round.

Ideal

"I'm sure there are a number of teams looking at him," Phelan said.

"Are we one of them? We are looking at talent all of the time and we are in there with the rest of them.

"He showed his threat in the game at Old Trafford and he appeals because he is a tall, skilful boy and in some ways he is an ideal player for the English league.

"He has stature, his feet are good and he is producing some good performances. I am sure everybody has looked at him."

Big-hitters impress Sir Alex

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted to see the master Paul Scholes and the apprentice Darron Gibson scoring long-range goals in the 4-0 win over West Ham.

The United boss has encouraged his midfield men to shoot from outside the box this season, and against the Hammers his wish was granted as both men hit stunning 20-yard efforts.

“It was a great performance, particularly in the second half,” Sir Alex told MUTV. “Getting the goal just before half-time helped us of course. The goal allowed us to settle down and use our experience in the second half. We played very well then.”

Central to the performance was the midfield magic of Scholes. “Paul is an incredible player and he is conducting our play so well at the moment,” enthused the boss. “He’s making it look good for us.

“And as I’ve always said about Darron, he has this ability and power to score from outside the box, which he proved again today with a marvellous strike.

“I was pleased that we did try to [shoot from distance] on a number of occasions, and it does give us an extra dimension to our game because we don’t normally have midfield players who can do that.”

Scholes orchestrated play for the Reds at Upton Park alongside the youth of Gibson and Anderson. Sir Alex feels the two apprentices will have learnt a thing or two from the experience.

“They are both only young boys of 22 and 21 years of age. They are going to be great players, and they accept that Paul Scholes is the finished article. They see a man who has been doing it for 15 years at the highest level. He’s a great example to them and it will rub off I’m sure.”

Gibson hails strong squad

QUOTE
United may be losing players left, right and centre  sweat.gif , but Darron Gibson praised the strength of the Reds' squad after Saturday's 4-0 win over West Ham.

Sir Alex had defensive selection problems before the game, with Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, John O'Shea, Fabio and Rafael all unavaliable. By the time the final whistle sounded, Gary Neville and Wes Brown had joined the walking wounded.

It meant United began the match with Darren Fletcher at right back... and ended it with Michael Carrick and Evra in the heart of defence, with Ryan Giggs on the left.

"It was a massive win for us and shows how good our squad is," Gibson told MUTV. "We have players who can step in and do a good job. I’ve not seen Michael play at centre half before... and Fletch was playing out of position too."

Gibson netted his third goal of the week (and United's second at Upton Park) with a stunning strike from outside the box.

"I was buzzing after the Spurs game on Tuesday and ready to play again. It was a massive boost for me [to start against West Ham]. My two goals during the week got my confidence up and the gaffer’s stuck with me, which is great.

"For my goal, Patrice gave me the ball, I gave it to Giggsy… the manager and Mick Phelan had been telling me and Anderson to get forward so I ran forward and Giggsy gave me the ball back and I just stroked it home. I think it was better than the goals against Spurs. It was a better celebration so I’m happy with that!

"Overall, we’re very happy with the performance and I think we're starting to hit our stride. Hopefully we can kick on from here and keep winning."

Defensive crisis for United

QUOTE
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is facing a major defensive headache afterbeing left with just two fit defenders in his first-team squad.

United ended yesterday's 4-0 Premier League win over West Ham with Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra at centre-back and Ryan Giggs at full-back after Gary Neville and Wes Brown added to an already-lengthy injury list.

Evra and young Belgian Ritchie De Laet are United's only two fit defenders, with reserve player Corry Evans -brother of centre-back Jonny - likely to be called into the squad for Tueday's Champions League clash with Wolfsburg.

Both Neville and Brazilian Fabio are suffering from groin problems, Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand have calf injuries, John O'Shea is out with thigh trouble, while Edwin van der Sar, Rafael and Brown are all missing too.

Young centre-back James Chester, winner of the club's Reserve Player of the Year Award last season, was included in United's Champions League squad, but is currently on-loan at Championship side Plymouth Argyle, while fellow defensive prospect Craig Cathcart is also on-loan, at Watford.

A draw for United against Wolfsburg would win the group but Ferguson's more pressing concern is being able to field a defence that can compete with the reigning Bundesliga champions.

First choice centre-back Vidic was missing from yesterday's line-up with flu but is expected to return to form a makeshift central defensive partnership with midfielder Carrick in Germany, with Darren Fletcher starting - as he did against West Ham - at right-back.

"Evra must be the smallest centre half in the world,'' said the United boss. "But he's a good reader of the game. He's quick and determined.

"I don't know where I'm going to get a back four for Tuesday. Probably Nemanja Vidic will be back from flu and I'll probably play Carrick alongside him.''

United tempted by "ideal" Dzeko

QUOTE
Manchester United assistant Mike Phelan rates Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko as "ideal for the English league'' and has hinted the Red Devils could consider a move for the player.

Dzeko, 23, has attracted interest from teams in Spain, Italy and England, with United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal all linked with him in recent weeks.

But the Bosnia forward had repeatedly hinted that his preferred destination, should he move from Germany, would be Serie A side AC Milan.

The striker scored 30 goals in 33 appearances to help Wolfsburg lift the Bundesliga title last season and has 11 already this campaign.

Dzeko scored against Sir Alex Ferguson's side when the sides met in the Champions League earlier this season and Phelan has admitted the club have been looking at him since.

"I'm sure there are a number of teams looking at him. Are we one on them? We are looking at talent all of the time and we are in there with the rest of them,'' Phelan said.

"He showed his threat in the game at Old Trafford and he appeals because he is a tall, skilful boy and in some ways he is an ideal player for the English league.

"He has stature, his feet are good and he is producing some good performances. I am sure everybody has looked at him.''

i heard diving? who dive? Stevie me never dive i tell u, he dont need that trick to get penalty... well actually he can anytime go to the opponent keeper and punch him in the face, then claimed it as self-defence. Bang penalty for Liverpool whoohoo flex.gif
Oh wait, did I got confuse with the pitch and a bar again? hmm.gif

I found some old joke from RedCaf:

NEWSFLASH: The next Liverpool champions league match has been moved to the GAY Adult Channel Apparantly 11 arseholes getting hammered is too explicit for Sky Sports

SKY SPORTS BREAKINGS NEWS:
Liverpool football club have announced that next year's shirt sponsor will be Tampax. A spokesman for Tampax said, "To sponsor a bunch of c*nts going through a bad period is exactly what our company is all about."

Damn I think i get a little obsessed with Liverpool recently... KRAP

Today in Wolfsburg

QUOTE
Return here for updates on Monday and Tuesday as Ben Hibbs travels with the team for the final Champions League group game in Wolfsburg...

09:15 Young Norwegian midfielder Magnus Eikrem has just checked in for what is his first European trip with the first team. I asked him if he can play at centre-back (even though I said early I'd had enough of that joke). He laughed (he's obviously not heard the gag as much as me) and said: "I don't know about that. But I'd play right-back if asked." We might need him to.

08:56 Sir Alex is always first to check in at the airport. He smiled, said 'Good morning' to me and Stewart Gardner from MUTV and seemed in good spirits. Now I'm waiting to see what the travelling squad is going to be. There are rumours around that suggest Vidic isn't travelling.

08:43 Well, that was an entertaining ride to Manchester Airport. The taxi driver interrupts his running commentary of the morning's traffic to tell me: "I stink, you know." I was slightly taken aback, and responded: "Oh right, why's that?" Apparently he'd made some scrambled eggs this morning, but left them for a bit and they went cold. "So I warmed them up in the microwave for a minute," he said. "When I opened the door they exploded all over me!"

08:03 The key update this morning, of course, is how many fit defenders Sir Alex can rustle up for the trip – don't forget we've got top spot in Group B to play for. I'll report back after around 09:30 GMT from Manchester airport with the travelling squad. If you have a question for me over the next two days, get in touch on Talking Reds. But I'll warn you I've already lost count of the amount of people who've said to me: "Got your boots? Might need you in defence on Tuesday!" Funny at first, now wearing thin. So, just stop it, okay?

07:58 I'm about to set off for the airport – I leave for Germany with the team at 10:30 GMT. Lots of fans have already travelled out, or will be doing so today, on the promise of litre beers and Christmas markets... as well as the football. Some Reds I know are staying in nearby Hannover and Berlin. We're settling for Wolfsburg itself, not too far away from the Volkswagen Arena. I'm led to believe the big attraction in Wolfsburg is the Autostadt Theme Park. Volkswagen, the major employers in the city, own and run a huge motor museum. So I'll check that out at some point.

Giggs advice for Scholes

QUOTE
Stuart Mathieson

December 07, 2009

RYAN Giggs has told Paul Scholes he'll get used to his non-regular role for the Reds.

The 36-year-old and his 35-year-old sidekick masterminded United's thumping 4-0 away win at West Ham.

But Scholes went into the game having declared he was dismayed at his contribution and disappointed he'd only started 10 of United's 21 matches this term.

"We all want to play every game and Paul is no different," Giggs told MEN Sport.

"He wants to play every week but with the squad we have got that is impossible. It is difficult at times when you go two or three weeks without a game and internationals come along and you are not involved in those as well. It is difficult to get back into the rhythm of it.

"You have to adapt to not playing every week but I have probably been doing it for the past three or four years so I have got used to it. Scholesy isn't used to it the same. But I am more of a dynamic player than Scholesy so perhaps I need more breaks.

"He can still get forward or sit in front of the back four and control the game.

"I can also play a number of positions but he is just the centre of midfield so it is more difficult to play every week.

"So all this not playing regularly is new to him. But he'll adapt to it as he has been proving.

Scholes control

"Saturday was what Scholesy is all about - controlling the game. He never gives the ball away. His passing range is the best in the game whether it is five yards or 45 yards he is capable of doing both.

"Paul is showing over the last couple of weeks just what a great player he still is."

Nevertheless, Scholes has hinted he'll assess his future in the summer.

"It is totally up to Scholesy. It all depends on how you feel and it is the same with me," added Ryan.

"It is still fairly early in the season. It is the middle of the campaign and not at the end and I feel good at the moment. I am sure Scholesy feels the same.

"With the experience he has got and the quality he has got you want that around the place for as long as possible."

Reds' boss Sir Alex Ferguson added his tribute to the playmaker and goalscorer.

"Paul is an incredible player and he is conducting our play so well right now and he is making it look good for us," he said.

"Darron Gibson and Anderson are young boys and are going to be great players but in Paul, they have to accept there is a man who is the finished article who has been doing it at the very highest level for 15 years.

"It is a great example and it will rub off I am sure."

No Vidic against Wolfsburg.....

Vidic misses United trip

QUOTE
Manchester United's injury-hit defence will be without Nemanja Vidic for Tuesday's match with Wolfsburg in the UEFA Champions League.

Last season's losing finalists travel to Germany hoping to secure top spot in Group B and, in theory, a more comfortable draw for the knockout stages.

But they will do so without Vidic as the centre-back has not recovered from the illness which ruled him out of Saturday's Premier League mauling of West Ham.

The 28-year-old has not travelled with Sir Alex Ferguson's side to leave his manager with a defensive headache for the game at Volkswagen Arena.

Ferguson's list of injured defenders includes Gary Neville and Wes Brown, who both limped off at Upton Park, plus longer-term casualties Rio Ferdinand, John O'Shea and Jonny Evans.

With the Da Silva brothers, Fabio and Rafael, also sidelined, the only orthodox defender Ferguson has in his squad is left-back Patrice Evra.

Ferguson has already revealed his intention to play Michael Carrick in central defence, while Darren Fletcher also seems certain to occupy a defensive berth.

QUOTE
10:32 United have packed the nappies and rusks for this trip! All the journalists on the plane are trying to work out what the back four will be. Any ideas? Post 'em in the Talking Reds thread please. I'd best turn off my phone and computer now – we're on the runway! I'll check in again once we've landed in Germany.

09:58 So Sir Alex is only taking 19 players, of whom only Oliver Gill and Patrice Evra are recognised defenders! Presumably Michael Carrick will continue at centre-back after filling in there at Upton Park on Saturday.

09:57 The full travelling squad is as follows, in no particular order: Ben Foster, Gabriel Obertan, Magnus Eikrem, Paul Scholes, Darron Gibson, Antonio Valencia, Oliver Gill, Michael Carrick, Matty James, Michael Owen, Darren Fletcher, Danny Welbeck, Ji-sung Park, Anderson, Patrice Evra, Cameron Stewart, Tomasz Kuszczak, Nani, Oliver Norwood.

No Rooney, No Berba, No Giggsy? I'm srsly doubting our chances over there. Hope we can scrap a draw. Forming a decent back four will be a challenge, considering we're up against Dzeko and Grafite.

QUOTE
Manchester United's injury crisis has worsened with the news defender Nemanja Vidic will miss their Champions League tie at Wolfsburg on Tuesday.

The Serb has a flu bug and been left at home, with United already through to the last 16 of the tournament.

Vidic joins Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Gary Neville, Rafael da Silva, Fabio da Silva, Johnny Evans and John O'Shea on the sidelines for United.

Michael Carrick will play at centre-back, possibly with Darren Fletcher.

Fletcher was expected to fill in at right-back but could now be forced to move to the centre following Vidic's withdrawal from the squad, although Patrice Evra could be another option.

United had hoped Vidic would have recovered from the flu bug that kept him out of Saturday's win at West Ham, but he failed to make the flight to Germany.

Oliver Gill, son of chief executive David, Magnus Eikrem, Cameron Stewart, Matt James and Oliver Norwood are all unfamiliar faces who were included in United's 19-man squad.

The decision to not include De Laet in the CL squad seem to be the wrong choice, in hind sight. But it's still ridiculous, the best part of our team, the defence, along with their covers are all out injured except for Evra and De Laet of those who has been involved this season. Dzeko and that Graafite must fancy their chances against us now and dreaming of a glorious nights for them, with the focus themselves rather than their team.

Kuszczak keeps his place, unless SAF feels its time to test Foster again.
Fletch-Carrick-Gill-Evra (or Evra in the centre, with Park as the fullback)
Gibson-Scholes-Anderson
Valencia/Nani-Owen-Park/Nani

WTF moment. Doesn't help when we really have any good prospects in the reserve level right now. They're all still in the academy.

Ever since Manucho left, everything have turned upside down. Started with his loan spell last season, we were changing our back four frequently because of injuries here and there, but with him still near, we were able to still feel his aura that lessens the burden on those injuries. Now with him gone, Rio's back got worse and worse, same with Evans ankle which requires surgery now. We need to buy him back.

BTW Sheep, this isn't you right, challenging for his balls the ball there in the middle.

Young squad fly to Germany

QUOTE
United have flown to Wolfsburg for Tuesday’s Champions League encounter with only two recognised defenders… and only one with previous first-team experience.

Injuries have hit Sir Alex’s squad hard, with eight defenders – Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown, Gary Neville, Rafael, Fabio, John O’Shea and Jonny Evans – ruled out of the trip. As a result, Patrice Evra and 19-year-old Oliver Gill (pictured) found themselves among a bevy of midfielders on Monday morning as the squad boarded the flight to Germany.

Michael Carrick is expected to drop into the backline after his impressive centre-half cameo at Upton Park on Saturday, while Darron Gibson has also indicated he'd feel comfortable in a defensive role.

"I've played centre-back before so I would have been all right," he said after the win at West Ham. "We have players who can step into unfamiliar positions and do a good job."

The boss’s selection woes for Tuesday's match in Wolfsburg were compounded by news that Ritchie De Laet is ineligible to play in the competition. The young Belgian defender would surely have been an automatic choice on Tuesday night given the current injury situation. Unlike Gill, however, he wasn’t able to be registered as a last-minute squad member as UEFA regulations stipulate additional players must have been at the club for a period of two years. De Laet signed for the Reds in January 2009.

Oliver Gill, a no-nonsense defender who’s made nine appearances for the Reserves this season, is yet to make his first-team debut but could find himself in the starting XI on Tuesday night. He’s not the only player on the trip yet to taste first-team action: Reserves midfielders Cameron Stewart, Matty James, Magnus Eikrem and Oliver Norwood all boarded the flight to Germany.

There were notable absences, too, with Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Dimitar Berbatov and Federico Macheda left behind in Manchester, presumably with one eye on this weekend’s league fixture against Aston Villa.

United’s 19-man squad for the game in Wolfsburg: Tomasz Kuszczak, Ben Foster, Patrice Evra, Oliver Gill, Gabriel Obertan, Magnus Eikrem, Paul Scholes, Darron Gibson, Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Matty James, Darren Fletcher, Ji-sung Park, Anderson, Cameron Stewart, Nani, Oliver Norwood, Michael Owen, Danny Welbeck

i donno why but i got a feeling we gonna win tomorrow match hmm.gif
Maybe everybody thought that we'll be playing heavy defense especially midfield joining in for defense.
It's the best time to launch some counter attacks with speedy players.

It's a worry to see midfield player filling up the defense slots... but if we try to see it in a different angle, the defense can turn into a heavy offense in a split second coz we have probably 8 attacking midfields in the pitch.

PIG has been playing the past two matches. I'll say give him a rest and foster a chance to play. Nani who has been out of first team action for some time, should get his feets on the field as well. Gills is a CB from the reserves.

Just my thoughts.-

I don't think Kuszczak needs a rest. He has got his *fire* burning high and at the highest confidence.

It's very crucial in such a match where we're without our usual defenders.

To say that he's lack of confidence might be one but he did have couple of matches in his bag to draw back his confidence. Not to be harsh on him or w/e but everyone has a fair chance at it. He didnt really managed to pull out a really terrific show and let PIG got back at him w the last couple matches.

im new here, so i dont really now why kusczack is labelled as PIG =.=

maybe foster's just nervous, wc next year, probably capello would be watching every matches that he playes in, he tries to put on a good show , but ends up faltering on every occasion. nevertheless, foster is still a good keeper, just need to improve more on his mentality

the only thing that matters now is Evra and Fletcher come back from Germany injury free. We need them to contain Villa's Agbonlahor and Ashley Young on flank. I hope this weekend game we'll get to see Brown back from injury as well as vidic. Carrick performed against West Ham but i'm not really confident if he can match the physical presence of Carew and Heskey.

We'll play without pressure

QUOTE
With a Champions League Last 16 place already secured for the Reds, Sir Alex Ferguson says there is much less pressure on his injury-hit squad and the young players drafted in as cover.

United take on Wolfsburg in the Volkswagen Arena on Tuesday night with Group B’s top spot up for grabs, but Sir Alex says he cannot see a clear advantage in finishing first and so has turned his attentions to preserving his side for the busy Christmas league programme.

“Wolfsburg will be delighted that we have so many injuries because it’s a big game for them,” the boss in Germany on Monday. “My main concern is getting players back from injury. I have to look at the bigger picture and that means looking to Saturday [against Aston Villa] and future league games.”

It goes without saying that the United players will be doing their utmost to win in Germany, but the quality and unpredictably of this year’s European tournament means that finishing second is much less of a stumbling block than it might be in other years.

“We’ve qualified for the Last 16, and looking at the groups I’m not sure whether first or second really matters,” said the boss. “So that is a major boost to us. If we are second, I don’t know if it does matter.

“In one group you’ve potentially got AC Milan or Real Madrid, in another you’ve got Barcelona, Inter Milan and Rubin Kazan, another you have Fiorentina and Lyon, or Bordeaux, Bayern and Juventus. You get one of those teams and it doesn’t really matter. They’re all of a similar quality - very good teams.

The only advantage you’re giving away by finishing second is playing the home game first in the knockout round.”

Reds injury problems deepen

QUOTE
United are facing an injury crisis of epic proportions, and not just in defence, with Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov joining an ever-increasing list of players on the treatment table.

There was a further blow to the Reds' rearguard with news that John O'Shea and Jonny Evans will both be out until the New Year.

Sir Alex took a depleted Reds squad to Germany for United's final Group B game with Wolfsburg - a 19-man group containing 13 midfielders.

The United boss first faces a headache trying to select a team to tackle the German champions, but also has an eye on an ever more tricky league tie with Aston Villa on Saturday.

United hope Wes Brown (hamstring) and Nemanja Vidic (flu) will replenish the Reds' decimated defence. But the injury problems don't stop there. Neither Rooney (hamstring) nor Berbatov (knee) travelled to Germany and both men are doubtful to play against Villa.

“There’s no good news with all these injured players," the boss said at his pre-Wolfsburg press conference on Monday. "We've left several players behind and have a lot of thinking to do about team selection."

Patrice Evra is the only fit and recognised defender in the team out in Germany, and Sir Alex at least isn't letting the situation get him down too much. “It’s worth trying one defender!" he joked. "Manchester United are always first at doing something, so we will try and do that again on Tuesday by playing with just one defender!

"We know we have a difficult task picking a back four that can unite together and give me good organisation and good passing ability considering we don’t have natural centre-backs. These are the decisions we are addressing, and hopefully we get the answer."

With United already through to the next round of the Champions League, domestic matters take precedence. But the picture is no less bleak on that front.

"As we've explained with Rio Ferdinand, we don't have a time schedule for him, and John O'Shea and Jonny Evans are both out until January. They’re out for a few weeks, and they're the major injuries as it stands.

"Rafael and Fabio will certainly not [feature against Villa]. We're hoping that we can have Wes Brown fit for Saturday. But it's a  strain and it won't be an easy one."

There was some good news in that Ryan Giggs, also missing from the group that travelled to Wolfsburg, will be fit for Saturday. But the news regarding Berbatov and Rooney is less positive.

"We left Ryan behind because we’ve been playing him in one game a week and that has worked for us. He is fit for Saturday, but Berbatov and Rooney are both doubtful."

To me , the remaining PL matches in December are more important
12 Dec Villa (H)
15 Dec Wolves (h)
19 Dec Fulham (a)
27 Dec Hull (a)
30 Dec Wigan (H)

The tricky games are Villa and Fulham. We need at least JOS, Vidic, Brown to be fit during this duration.

To me , the remaining PL matches in December are more important
12 Dec Villa (H)
15 Dec Wolves (h)
19 Dec Fulham (a)
27 Dec Hull (a)
30 Dec Wigan (H)

The tricky games are Villa and Fulham.  We need at least JOS, Vidic, Brown to be fit during this duration.

Both JOS & Evans out until New Year.

Nani's tackling is quite good, and he's capable of attacking as well. I'm just worried about Evra, Dzeko may win the aerial battle.

Or we will have to move Fletcher into CB alongside Carrick to counter both their strikers and put Gill at RB? By putting Gill into fullback position, the risk of getting exposed probably will be smaller IF our winger can track back for extra cover.

I think Park will probably start this one, we need his work rate from midfield.

Back support

QUOTE
Phil Thompson  Posted 7th December 2009

Manchester United have nothing short of a defensive crisis on their hands. Sir Alex Ferguson has said as much and his options for Tuesday's Champions League clash at Wolfsburg look extremely limited.

Normally you can get away with losing one or two players but Patrice Evra is the only recognised first-team defender left in the frame so Plan A has gone well out of the window.

Michael Carrick did very, very well as a central defender against West Ham on Saturday but it will be tough to start a match of this significance at the back even for a player as experienced as him.

When you get thrown into the deep end as he did at the weekend it can be easier to survive but he's had time to think about playing in defence now and he'll fully understand the size of the task that awaits him.

Makeshift

Manchester United want to finish top of the group and a draw will be good enough to achieve that but their opponents can still jump ahead if they win and CSKA fail to beat Besiktas in Istanbul.

Wolfsburg played very well at Old Trafford in September even if they did lose 2-1 and United are probably ruing that so many injuries have come at what is now a critical stage of affairs.

They know their makeshift back four is going to have to repel wave and wave of attacks from Wolfsburg, who are unbeaten at home in this season's competition so United's 14-match unbeaten away run in the Champions League (discounting last season's final) will be under serious threat.

Nemanja Vidic's bout of flu must be extremely bad for him to miss this game with Gary Neville and Wes Brown joining Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans and John O'Shea on the sidelines.

Tough

Sir Alex will have to draw on his huge motivational skills to gee up individuals and make sure everyone helps out at the back.

Wayne Rooney would definitely do his bit but he, like Dimitar Berbatov, hasn't travelled so it gives Michael Owen and Danny Welbeck a possible window of opportunity.

It's going to be fascinating to find out just how good United's squad is. Everyone has flagged up how good Chelsea's is and we know Arsenal have got a lot of good youngsters coming through.

Sir Alex came out recently and said this is as good a group of youngsters as he's had in many a year - the Welbecks, the Machedas and the Gibsons.

Darron Gibson is certainly doing himself no harm at the moment but he and the others coming through are really going to have to come to the fore on Tuesday to get a result.

In contrast, Michael Owen has got nothing to prove to anybody but he is going to have to come in, perform and help a lot of the youngsters on what looks like it will be a tough night.

Some possible lineups for consideration! laugh.gif

QUOTE
14:03 Across the way from my room is MUTV's Stewart Gardner. On the plane over we attempted to pick a potential team for Tuesday night. Neither back four makes for comfortable reading with Wolfsburg's threat in attack, but here's what we came up with:

SG (4-3-3): Kuszczak; Fletcher, Carrick, Evra, Park; Gibson, Scholes, Anderson; Valencia, Owen, Nani.

BH (4-4-2): Kuszczak; Gibson, Fletcher, Carrick, Evra; Valencia, Anderson, Scholes, Park; Welbeck, Owen

Holy cow! Utube's videos are awsums!! Norwood better than beckham biggrin.gif

Jokes aside, IIRC, Ando once said he wouldn't mind playing at LB since he's quite versatile as well (JOS will not like this). The only position, I think, that he may not be as comfortable as JOS is GK. Dam Brazilians, learned to shoot awsums penalties but hopeless in saving 'em.

Well, if you see the amount of midfielder prospects available for England, and the chances that Norwood will have once he's old, it will be obvious why he opted for N.Ireland instead.

Scholes: We can adapt

QUOTE
Paul Scholes is the type of player – cool and calm on the ball when under pressure – that you want in situations like on Tuesday. The Reds are down to the bare bones of the squad, but the Salford schemer naturally takes it all in his stride.

United only have one fit defender – Patrice Evra – here in Wolfsburg for the final Champions League Group B game which will decide who will go through as group section winners.

It takes a lot to fluster Scholesy, and he meets this latest hurdle with a typically effortless shrug.

“I don’t think it [the injuries] changes the way the team will play,” he told reporters on Monday.

“We always play the same way. Sometimes you have to play in a different position, one you’re not used to. But we have talented players capable of playing anywhere.”

That doesn’t hide the fact that, in attack at the very least, Wolfsburg are a very proficient team and will need no invitation to try and snatch first place in the group from United’s grasp.

“I thought Wolfsburg played very well at Old Trafford. They keep the ball well,” added Scholesy, point out the German champions’ strengths.

“We’ve watched a lot of videos of them playing and they seem to have a traditional English style of play – they like to cross the ball into the box and they have two good centre-forwards who are dangerous in the air.

“Their two forwards, Edin Dzeko and Grafite, are their most dangerous players.

"They are part of the reason why Wolfsburg score a lot of goals, but they also concede a lot as well.”

It all makes for an intriguing, and potential high-scoring, game on Tuesday at the tight and compact Volkswagen Arena.
