wow seems that alot of people vote for Tomtom in the poll... so expensive also so many people buy?

btw the only complain i have for papago is the 'car' flies out of the roads all the time... kinda annoying...

like everything seems ok, navigating around... then suddenly see my car fly out of the road kinda stupid... lol

That's 2D lock.. Means the satellite reception is not good enough. A 3D lock will give you more accurate position.

I can't offer an explanation for this behavior but several possible reasons will be:

1. If other GPS-based apps like TomTom and Mobile Maps also have the same behavior, then it's clear that GPS chipset in iPhone is not good enough. I only have PPG so can't tell for sure
2. If only PPG showing this behavior, then it's either the mapset or the software bug

That being said, rarely I'm having such problem happens. If they do, it will resume back in secs.

Even Garmin with other phone will also sometimes shows the same behavior

but why the Application is really2 slow lol..
i used it on my iphone 3gs...
and the Apps is really suck..
why always locate me at KL?
LOL?

Just because you don't know how to use it don't call it suck.

Google map is using A-GPS.

Meanwhile PPG is a combo of A-GPS and GPS. If you are using it first time, do it outside of the building. Even though it's using A-GPS, it will be slower to lock than normal Google maps because A-GPS in PPG is use only to route/guide satellite to find your location.

BTW, not having any issue with voice navigation even with the latest version.

go to proclipusa.com

they have the kit there. Shipping will cost you as they fedex it but call them (skype!) and see if they can send via usps.

I bought my car mount/iPhone 3gs holder from them and am one happy camper!

Now I have a great rm90 gps app that works fine.

And with my iPod kit from icarkits.com - I have everything I need!

Just need to figure out the mic into the kit and I'll have handsfree phone too!

If you do get the TomTom car kit, do post some comparisons of performance with/without it used.

It would be interesting to see how much of a performance improvement it brings (as it has a 'better' GPS chip in it), compared to using the iPhone's native GPS.

Cheers.

yeah, i have problems with papago getting signals locks as well.

at the end of the day, Google Maps gives best signal lock and direction. But at the cost of no turn by turn voice directions, you may crash.

so.. yeah tongue.gif

Seriously, I'm perplexed why do so many users having problem with satellite locks. Perhaps, these guys should clarify the "problem". Does it mean a very long time to lock or there is no lock at all?

Alas, a comparison with google map is a moot point. Google map primarily uses A-GPS which requires NO SATELLITE at all (at least in iPhone as google map version for other phone do have GPS fix). By using telco's tower triangulation on the ground, you can expect it's way much faster but less stellar in terms of accuracy.

Papago for example uses GPS satellite to lock. It requires quite sometime to lock but once you get a solid lock, it's way more accurate than A-GPS.

Therefore, there are several rules of thumb to follow when using GPS-based application.

1. Always stay outside any building and preferably away from any cluttered high-rise buildings around you for faster lock. This is especially true when it's the first time you start PPG

2. When you haven't use PPG for quite sometimes, satellite will also take quite sometime because while you're still at the same location (your house for example), the same satellites that gave you the locked have moved away, requiring you to lock to adjacent or nearer satellite. (there are about 32 GPS satellites)

3. When you have moved away, faraway from the place where you last used PPG, it will take quite sometime to lock as well, for basically the same reason with no 2.

PPG said in the iTunes description that they are not using A-GPS. But I believe this refers to the main method of tracking similar like Google maps. However, if you start PPG, you will be prompted to turn on location services if isn't turn on yet. This is A-GPS and explained why you do get signal in a building even though probably not that accurate.

If anyone asks why do it still take quite sometime though it does have A-GPS, I believe this is due to the fact that A-GPS in PPG is use only to guide satellite to track you down, unlike A-GPS in Google maps which lock you on once you start the app.

I'm on non-JB, I believe what I've said will work wonders with those with the same set. Am not sure those with Jbed phone will work the same as the problem may lies somewhere else.
