Driving depending on your speed. I hv colleague that drive on avg 180km/hr and can reach Penang within 2 hrs. If you are on avg, Should be ~ 4.5hrs reaching K kedah (450km)

On hotels, look around previous postings or otherwise, goto those booking websites such as cuti.com.my, agoda, mari & etc..

i'll be driving up to langkawi next week by car. I target to stop twice throughout my journey for breakfast and lunch and reach kuala kedah jetty by 12pm +-. What time do u think we should move out from kl? say 5am start move?

I can just rent a car straight out when i reach the langkawi ferry jetty right? I didn't book any car rental but plan to rent when we arrive there. You think we can get a car rental there on the spot?

BTW, hows for those who just went to langkawi recently...hows the weather like there? I'll be going there for deep sea fishing so hopefully it's not raining whole day! and hopefully the highway is not flooded tooup north

blink.gif Hai Barney. You seem to be doing fishing alot. Presume if you stick to the speed limit, you will reach Ipoh in 2 1/2 to 3 hours. From there to Butterworth in 2 hours and from Butterworth to K.Kedah in 1 1/2 hours. Half and hour for lunch at the laybys or another hour or so if you detour into towns. Doesn't really matter if you are within 1 or 2 hours ETA because you still need to find a parking lot and still have to wait for ferries.

The NS highway doesn't floods so no worry but might be slippery though on certain stretches if it rains. December is squid (sotong)season in Langkawi. You should try it. Check with your boatman. Car rentals, no problem at the jetty. nod.gif Happy fishing!

I am thinking of going to Langkawi on CNY.

Can anyome advise what is the cheapest way to travel there from Singapore? The flight direct from Singapore is quite expensive.

Thinking of a few options,
1. Drive to KL, park at airport and take AA.
2. Drive to penang, and go by ferry. Where to park my car in penang?
3. Is it possible to drive to Ipoh and take flight from ipoh?

Thanks.

It's actually hard to decide. Drive to KL and take AA, hmmm....... Can you get tickets on that day? I don't think you can get flights from Ipoh and the third option. Might as well drive all the way to Kuala Kedah, afterall it is another hour plus. Parking in Kuala Kedah is no problem and more convenient than Penang.

If not, driving to Penang will benefit you as you will be visiting two places, namely Penang and Langkawi. Penang is a nightmare in CNY though. Jams are everywhere and parking spaces are limited and eating is a nightmare! sad.gif Cheapest is still direct to Kuala Kedah but prepare to wait a few hours for ferry tickets on that period and you better book your hotel NOW!

Just came back from Langkawi. Got upgraded to the partial seaview room at Sheraton which is much better than my previous garden view room. Starwood Preferred Guest is definitely recommended if you can get enough points. I'm staying at the Andaman the next time biggrin.gif

Rented a new Honda City for RM330 for 4 days from the airport which is a bit more expensive than I remembered back in January but convenient. Rain wasn't bad, only about 1 hour in the late afternoon/evening some days. Did very little shopping this time around but overall it was a good relaxing trip.

Thanks for your advice. Most probably I will go from KL and book the flight in advance. I will also visit penang but will not be driving there as I don't know where to leave my car for 4 days. For Kuala Kedah, I will not consider if I still need to wait for hours for the ferry.

My itinerary as below,

Day 1
Drive to KLIA
Reach KLIA park at KLIA carpark levels 4 & 5 at Block A, RM$129 for first 3 days, and subsequent RM$15/day)
MAS flight to langkawi
Reach Langkawi and rent car
Check in City Bayview Hotel
Visit Oriental Village, Cable Car, Horse Riding and waterfall
Seafood Dinner /Drinks at Cenang Beach
Pasar Malam (Night Market)

Day2
Dev's Mangrove Tour RM$180/Person 5hrs tour (Top 3 attractions by Tripadvisor)
Underwater world
Kuah town shopping

Day3
Island hopping tour RM$35 to $50/person 4hrs tour
Crocodile farm/Snake Sanctuary/Mahsuri’s Tomb
Tanjong Rhu Beach for Drinner/Drinks

Day4
Visit Eagle square/Kuah shopping
Return car
Ferry to Penang (may change to flight depend on the cost)
check-in Traders Hotel Penang
Dinner/Shopping at gurney

Day5
Lek Lok Si Temple
Penang Heritage Walk
Queensbay Mall
Supper at New Lane Hawker

Day 6
Flight to KL by Airasia
Bus from LCCT to KLIA to collect vehicle
Drive Home

Any advice for my planning? How is the ferry from Langkawi to Penang? I decide to take ferry because I can pre-book from the website.

It's the old design ie. similar to garden view in most ways. Have not seen a newly renovated room at the Sheraton. I'm assuming it's a lot nicer?

Yes, a lot nicer with detailed amenities/facilities used. Some partial seaview has done renovation and some are not.
