jst wanna ask, android noob here, after reading the posts, is htc hero's gps free if use with software like papago?

like for example, sony ericsson's G705's gps system will suck data frm the 3g network
*
it depends on what software you using... example like google map will use both gps and your 3g..

while papago is purely gps as the maps don't need to be downloaded online during use. so basically there are no internet charges and gps service is free.

I have tried it on my Tattoo, it only show the direction to me in 2D google map. It won't show me what we have seen in youtube since it has been blocked by google (only allowed in US only) and so far don't have any street view in Malaysia yet. ><

Yeah, Malaysia doesn't have street view.

When I tested, I went to London (in google maps, not physically) and view the street view over there, its quite cool actually. After you are in street view, just Menu->Compass ON, then hold the phone up vertically.

I think its not that google blocks street view in Malaysia, its just they haven't done it here yet, since market here is small.

So far I tested, it doesn't make use of the compass at all.

One thing I notice is the difference in my HTC Magic's Compass compared to IPhone's. For my HTC Magic, I need to hold it up vertically (like when shooting a photo of pc fair girl), while I saw youtube of IPhone, you need to lay it down flat on the table.

So, HTC Magic's compass will not be so useful for reading maps, but will be more useful during navigation.

google earth/google maps is a very good application.
assuming you get to use the voice navigation, how sure are you that the turn restrictions are gonna be right ? google earth doesnt even show klang areas and alot of other areas.

malsingmaps and malfreemaps, struggle to keep up with the town councils road plannning, even with >10000 contributors.

wats more, the poi's collected from 10000 contributors are updated constantly.

how would google earth be better than a community map ? in aperiod of 7 days alone, at least 30 points are being taken off, due to closure or shifting of businesses. another 50 are added, and 5 more corrected for spelling.

its good. u get to see houses and buildings on top view which a normal driver will never see. so if u wanna find a signboard using google earth u have to wait until they come out with street view for malaysia ....which they wont.
data charges in malaysia also cheap cheap oni ma. so if u drive from here to ipoh is about 200km using 1 hour + journey. your data charges assuming is 1 sen 1 kb will equate up to ..... RM 200 from here to ipoh.
and that also they might bring u holland road coz they dunno which road is 1 way street, which road is closed for construction which road no longer exists.

best part is, they navigate u, thru flyover . what happens if u dowan go flyover but u at bottom of flyover part ? google earth will fail u there.
malaysia got many place is 3 tier highway.
LDP old motorala/sunway there oredi 3 tiers. 2 tiers also berlambak. Google earth confirm dun even know that kind of road exists. how to navigate u properly la when they dont even know how many tiers.

if go small kampung then no view liao. places like awan besar, klang, kuala pilah etc etc all see trees oni.
how to navigate balik kampung or visiting i oso dunno.

my reply is intended for the weirdos who trusts googlemap navigation more than community maps.
i have no idea how to navigate myself to a place using top sat view. street view damn nice, but top view is ....... lets just say i never see ppl's roof before when i drive or walk lor.

however dont get me wrong, it is a good application. still far long way to go before anyone can use it in malaysia. singapore still ok. malaysia and thailand, outla.

Malaysia road change too much...

A lot of maps or GPS software do not cater for ever changing Msia road...hahahaha Wonder the G will one day say Msia is 1st in ever road changing, and are still so proud of it... biggrin.gif

I have a GPS software that works damn well in Sgp, but not as well in Msia... not because of the software, but is because of the maps...*sigh*

Hmm, from my experience of using Garmin for 1 year+, and very limited experience in using Papago for 1 week+, both of them never make use of the elevation from the GPS, meaning that they can't tell whether I am on which tier, even when using community map. Usually they will only realize after I go out from the place that have many tiers.

So for this 1-2-3 tier thing, I would say google maps (its different from google earth, FYI), and community maps are the same. I agree with everything else you said. biggrin.gif

papago does. simply because, of the compiler.
papago released its compiler to mfm while garmin, didnt release anything.

Both Garmin and Papago do not make use of elevation data because among elevation data is most inaccurate and unreliable in areas with a lot of building cover or below an elevated highway. Further improvements in GPS technology is needed to navigate multi-tier roads properly.

Bro, nice that you can explain this... Meaning what explained by another forumer is incorrect.

So, since you know so well on papago... Any plan for upgrade to support future Android version? And roughly when should we be expecting it?
Sorry, I didn't ask M3 because I noticed it is a waste of time asking them anyway....

There is still a lot of uncertainty in this, hence I have yet to purchase x5.... It is definitely something I really wish to have, simply because of the MFM....biggrin.gif
