Oh, but can I tune it back to the standard EADGBE tuning?

Btw, my classical guitar strings snapped, was playing too aggressive with it (percussion and aggressive strumming  laugh.gif I know, stupid me), any good strings recommendation?

Hi guys,

My daughter's nail has start breaking- the whole 'crescent' part of the outgrown nail would just peel of once it reaches approx 1.5mm growth.
What do Malaysia guitarist do to overcome thin nails. Foreign forums do mention about 'Hard As Hoof' as a good choice, but what i found here is only 'Epi' products which are laden with chemicals.

She's starting to pluck with her nails, and it 's frustrating that she can't progress past finger tip plucking.

Thanks in advance!

You can try a kind of transparent nail polish called nail strengtheners, which of course, strengthen your nails (check www.opi.com)

or you can try using fake nails (but you have to file it into the shape you want), even professional guitarist use fake nails also sometime it is for emergency purpose (break a nail before concert etc) , or like your daughter case, replace the soft nails they have (example Fabio Zanon , I actually met him in person and he talk about it in master class)

yeehoo,
Nice to hear from you again. Thanks for the ideas. I did check uot the Epi product. About RM140-60 for a 'Buy 1 Get 1 Free' deal.
Did abit more online research and decides that we would try natural products first. Chemicals may be detrimental to her your fingers.
So, I have bought a bottle of Onymyrrhe to try. If this fails we would then use press-on nails. Will try and post her progress in due time.

Lucidus,

LOL! Far from being it. She has short nails has been playing with her finger tips since she started playing 2.5 yrs ago. She started keeping her nails since late last year, keen to play 'properly'. BTW, ABRSM Grade2 in April. Teacher recommended to skip Grade 1.

You don't like fake fingernails or those fingerpicks for your daughter?

Lucidus,
Yes, a popular choice of better players. But as I posted earlier, press-on/fake nails is an alternate option, but we'd like to build up the nails naturally first. She is only 11 years old. A hassle to use fake nails and I will also have to contend with school disciplinary requirement. For now, I feel it is wiser to concentrate on getting stronger nails, than confronting the discipline teacher : )

BTW, she is using picks for both her electric and acoustic guitar.

I see.

Maybe apart from those chemicals that are applied directly onto the nail, you might also wanna observer your daughter's diet.

Maybe include/add food that are high in calcium for stronger nails and bone?

Where still got rm60 per month? RM60 is probably group class only. I remember long time ago it was rm60 for one on one lesson when I was a beginner taking lesson in a music center in the year 2003. Now music center charges at least rm90-rm110 for beginner.

In fact we did go to the doctor and doctor said she is not deficient in any thing nor aenemic, and topical assistance will not help. Sounds gloomy, but Doc will check with his friend(a guitar playing doctor) and get back to us.

Let's see what the othr doc has to say.....

Most girls have soft nails. It's gene. I have very soft and weak nails like your daughter, but still can play the classical guitar. What I do is I apply Vaseline hands and nails lotion everyday (bought it in watson) or apply a thick layer of manicure nail polish.

RM90-110 is for both Yamaha and also ABRSM syllabus in music center.
