Have any of you listened to Classical Soul by Oscar Lopez before? Do you know how he does the muted strum-esque thing in beat all while playing the notes?

i played classical guitar for 6 years (self learn).. after hearing lefthanded-debunga wangi, i bought electric guitar.. but i rarely play the electric because i don't know what to play....... and my hand not so comfortable with electric guitar because i can't use full freedom with my right hand.. classical guitar is the most leisure and peaceful to play after all..

by the way, although i'm not very good at it but i really like and always play flamenco style with the classical guitar..

Hi again guys & gals,

Now my 5 1/2 yr old wants to play guitar (hope it is not a 'phase') lol!

Naturally there are questions in choosing the gear and i hope there's some input from experienced guitarists here.

What is more important? Fret/scale vs. string hard/softness?

If you have seen the youtube about a N.Korean whizkid girl, the above are nonissues. LOL!

Any ideas how shall I start off? I am thinking of 1/2 size with softest string. Maybe true natural gut strings?

Thanks in advance.

your thinking is correct 1/2 size, Gut strings is over the top already, just use normal tension nylon strings.

DaddyGuitar,
For a 5½ old kid, I suggest a half size guitar or yamaha Guitalele. My niece is 7 years old, I bought a yamaha guitalele for her to play. I teach her a couple of children songs and she enjoy playing it. The guitalele size is very suitable for young kid. It's actually a hybrid of guitar and ukulele. Just play the same way as normal guitar, only the different is the tuning is 4 steps up from the normal guitar. The sound is towards ukulele sound and it has very light fret touch.
Check out the yamaha guitalele video.

bella,
Thanks for the guitalele intro. but what is the width of the neck? The one in the vid does look wide.

Yeehoo,
LOL. Ya, I didn't consider that gutstrings are pretty expensive.

I'll be taking both the girls our sometime this week to try some sizes. I'll try to update here. I kinda 'nominate' the elder sister as the 'resident teacher'. Let her learn how to teach.

Cheers!

I never measure the width, not sure about it, not too narrow though. An adult can play the guitalele without any problem. The fret to fret distance is smaller than regular guitar which is good for small hands. It's a quarter size guitar. I manage to find a picture, you can compare the guitalele and a full size acoustic guitar.
