try adjusting the front derrailleur cage? Or better still, take it to your local bike shop.

before this I use Maxxis Larson. Perform well on road. and good in Frim. I give 4.5 out of 5!. although it slippery compare to real XC tire, but it is still acceptable and it have very low resistance ..surely it increased distance I ride rclxms.gif . if I need to change my tire. I will get one with similar with Larson tread smile.gif

Hi. Anyone going into Kiara trails this Sat ? I am a newbie. Interested to join a group if possible ... Thanks.

One more thing need your advice regarding gear shift, I have a 9 speed bike. When using the smallest cog at the front and the smallest at the back, the chain makes noise and not very smooth and hits the front derailer. Same goes if I use the largest front and largest back ...

Is it true that we should use the middle front gear the most and try to use the middle ranges of the back rather than the extremes ...

Appreciate your advice.

Cheers

Sunday biggrin.gif . Seldom see riders ride with largest front and smallest(largest) rear. .

ur not supposed to do that, and that will cause rubbing with the front derailleur.

QUOTE
A chain drive is one of the most efficient mechanical linkages there is. This is true as long as the chain runs in a straight line, but derailer gears don't always run the chain in a straight line. As you select gears that run the chain at an angle, the efficiency drops precipitately as the angle increases. For this reason, you should favor combinations that allow the chain to run nearly straight.
Generally, the large outer chainring shouldn't be used with the largest rear sprocket, because of the sharp angle it creates.

Similarly, the small inner chainring shouldn't be used with any of the smaller rear sprockets.

The small-small combinations create extra problems besides the bad angle. The smaller the front chainring, the greater the pull on the chain; the smaller rear sprockets only engage a very few teeth with a very few chain rollers at any one time, so stresses are concentrated. If you make a habit of abusing the small chainring of a triple crank by using it with the smaller rear sprockets, you will drastically increase the wear rate of both chain and sprockets.

i good thing to remember is to use the smallest chainring with the 4 largest rear cogs, middle chainring can use with all 9 rear cogs, largest chainring with the 4 smallest rear cogs. the straighter the chain line, the better the power transfer and reduces stress on the chain too.

You're not supposed to use that kind of combo... as it stretches the chain sideways to the max. Not only it's bad for transmission wear, there's also a danger of snapping the chain.

Basically, best to keep your chain as straight as possible.

Big chainring (front) --> Don't use last 3 biggest rear cog
Mid chainring (front) --> Don't use smallest and largest rear cog
Smallest chainring (front) --> Don't use the last 3 smallest rear cog

speaking about tyres, yeah, SB8 clogs up with mud like mad. scared of riding in kdcf when the trail is wet now. lol. thats also y i'm riding more xc than singletrack nowadays. tongue.gif

another thing about chainlines. whenever i send my bike to lbs for tuning, after tuning i always find the gears at smallest chainring, smallest cassette gear. after servicing always have to shift alot to get a straighter chainline and try to prolong chain life. lol. not sure if that is standard practice for tuning the transmission though hmm.gif

Are you sure its mud cake or something else...tongue.gif Just kidding. I get it too when the trail condition gets pretty muddy. When DH'ling you lift ur butt off the saddle and lean back rite. That is when you open opportunity for mud to get in lor. After that you sit on it & whoallah....mud pancake biggrin.gif .

Hi, anybody from Sarawak here. Specifically Kuching. Have a few question to ask regarding Kuching - shops/bicycle availability (brands/type) /cycling. Going to work there next year.
